All excellent points! Although I am tournament player, pretty much same thought patterns apply at microstake tournaments. I just need to remember opponents do not play as I would play, but do all sort of random stuff with random strength hands. It is travesty to miss value bets / raises / jams against that.
For sure. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've folded far too often in my ignition MTTs against those "merged range" triple-barrels (like the pocket 10s hand).
You can simplify your strategy to never donk bet, but in theory donking acceptable on boards where you have a range advantage and which your opponent should be checking back a high percentage of the time to realize their equity. A classic example is a board like 654 in a BU Vs BB single-raised pot. A lot of BB's range has nailed that flop while most of BU's range has whiffed it. BU should check boards like that a lot, so BB should lead to take advantage of their range advantage and to prevent BU from easily realizing their equity. Thing is, you still have to stay balanced as it's really easy to way over-bluff because you still started with a very wide range, much of which is still trash.
I am not PC and in fact, quite far from it. However, I think in your particular case - a reasonably well known poker coach in a public forum - I would steer away from those terms. A lot of your audience will actually be the people you’re deriding, so it doesn’t make sense to call them fish in public. Then there’s just good old fashion respect. Having a forum and calling people these terms in public (whatever is said behind closed doors is another issue) is something I don’t think is respectful on a human level. It’s good at least you are using the replayer that doesn’t show names; saying fish on video to a named player would definitely be below the belt IMO.
We need some form of vocabulary for distunguishing regs from recs. 'Fish' is a bit more crude than 'fun player' or 'rec' but in a sense it's also more genuine, descriptive and honest. I can see both sides here.
@@CarrotCornerPokerSure, it might be more genuine, honest and descriptive to call them fish just as it’s more genuine, honest and descriptive of me to call someone I see in the gym trying to lose weight as ‘fat’, in and around their presence. That doesn’t mean I should do it. The issue is, people just casually playing the game don’t want to be known as fish. The reality is, everyone knows what is being said if you say ‘fun player’ or like instead of ‘fish’. It’s simply about using language around these people that doesn’t make them feel bad about themselves or their poker.
I don't think it's quite the same. Calling a stranger 'fat' to their face has never been deemed acceptable but 'fish' was once seen as the standard poker term for a weaker poker player. We are not meaning that our opponents are 'scaly water dwelling creatures' - and the intent is almost never to cause insult but to describe their level of competency in poker and I think we should be able to accurately describe how good a person is at a competitive endeavour without having to dance around the topic by referencing the (possibly untrue) idea that they are not even trying to be good at it - many fish are not just playing for fun so 'fun player' can be pretty inaccurate. I think the downside of using 'fun player' / 'rec' for me is inauthenticity. By getting rid of the term 'fish' I think we're discarding a classic part of poker history and a very colourful part of its lexicon over the last two decades. Sure, this term might cause some offence but so do a lot of things in life. If you stripped a movie of all of the terms that could offend certain people in its audience it would become very shit indeed and I think most people would agree this is a bad trade off. These discussions are always about compassion vs colour/truth. There is always a trade off and so the case for compassion shouldn't automatically win just because it leads to less offence - that it does is a tautology.@@redraw0160
Every time a fish donks into me from now on, that song is going to play in my head. Whee!

I’m pretty new at this and yeah, sinning from studying too much GTO, but i’ve seen too many fish do the opposite, get the flush and not even bet it or bet 1bb on all streets, and you’re like, wtf. So one gets wary for sure.
I think referring to players as fish is a bit dehumanizing and will cause you to overestimate your ability and make more mistakes. It is also harder to get into their heads, because you just say to yourself, "just another stupid fish", and don't develop a good thought process for the best ways to take their money. Some poker players just have a huge ego and word choice like this only makes them blind to the fact that they themselves make mistakes and might even be a fish themselves. Recreational players don't like to play with people that look down upon them. When recreational players are berated, being called a fish or donkey, they end up not wanting to play against the assholes who feel entitled to their money. Recreational is a good word, because it means they are playing the game for fun, which is what they are doing.
As they say, 75% of poker players believe they are better than the other 75% of poker players. Thus, the game is rife with delusion. Therefore, I deem it still acceptable to say "fish," as the "fish" are apt to think you are talking about some other guy. Never mind that eventually the speech police will again come for the terms "rec" and "fun player" as pejorative just the same.
You should start saying "Magnitude trumps frequency" in live games as a response to any comment whatsoever and watch people's eyes glaze over as they nod in agreement at the ever so slightly out of reach vocab and concept.
I'm also not sure about the turn raise but the point is that after villain calls the raise it's highly likely that they have top pair or better by the river and therefore the large river bet is good. @@wVLADw
Rec/Recreational/Fun player is in my opinion much more insulting term than fish :D At least "fish" or "whale" or "ATM" or "donator" is more honest about the situation. Doubt the fish have fun when they are losing a ton of money, after all.
But then -please for the love of god- stop calling regulars "regs". Don't ever use "reg" and "rec", because it's obviously retarded to use two similar sounding words for opposite playertypes.
You don’t bluff to hit the river. You bluff to try to make your opponent fold often enough for the play to be correct. Having some nutted outs can make a bluff better, but the chance of hitting those outs is far from the primary reason. Because people can and do fold at certain frequencies, a bet shouldn’t be judged solely by how often your hand is winning, unless it’s a value bet, in which case how often you are winning when called is pretty important.
@@CarrotCornerPoker I don't think he folds there 4 / 5 times, which is what you need, given an ace and jack are well within his range. How can that bet sizing be correct. This just seems like cherry picking hands to get people to buy your course
Well I played the Q9 hand pretty well so I can only assume you mean that I have the facial features of a fish and am highly offended by this outrageous attack.
all 3 advice are contradicting he says jam the river with a winning hand but if you see another player jamming the river hes a super obvious fish also dont jam you should go for thin value, thats the right move! then if the other player goes for thin value hes a fish "you dont need solvers you need street smarts" so redbaron and linus are just monkeys pit-fighting to entertain this man i guess but well, what do you expect from the typical egoplayer who thinks nl100 is high stakes? lol your ability to sell your 100 dollar discord server overshadows your ability to play poker
I would say the term depends on the audience you are targeting. I know I am a fish at poker even if I am better than some people for sure. Does not stop me from trying to learn it better. And for sure does not stop me from enjoying it. As far as you don't extend the statements explicitly outside the poker domain: fish = complete degenerate with *insert preferred insult here in other area of life - you are fine. Ye, some thing come across as pretty aggressive and you loose some audience, but then again...... Not possible to make everyone happy :) I enjoy the content and than you for all the effort 👍

Yep tournament fields contain more of these opponents on average than cash game pools.

Is a donkbet ever good? When should i donkbet?

with point 1 about just going for the max, do you have an upper limit for this? 2x pot is not that unreasonable. but what about 15x?
30x? 40x?

No, it's not. It should be obvious that the majority of his range is top pair or better. And many fishes don't like to fold top pair.

I think it's totally fine to say fish, but definitely not fine to say diaper - or math.
You should call them VIPs.
Rather MVPs because they offer the most value to us
