  • The capstan motor on my RS-BX808 was a bit noisy, so I concluded it was in need of some lubrication. As usual, no job is as simple as anticipated and this one technically ends in failure. Time was wasted, regrets were had.
I tried a bit more editing on this one and also a voiceover. Hope it turned out good.

Very nice video...which shows clearly the servicing /cleaning points and the method how to do it.

There are three SMD Bi-Polar electrolytics, I think 10uF on the DD motor PCB. When I checked these in my 965 all of them were bad (high ESR). I replaced them with non SMD types and managed to fit them in. One of them I had to glue on the back metal plate and route the leads (insulating the leads) through an existing small hole to the PCB. After that the motor was nice and quiet. :-)

Hello from Bucharest. I discovered this video as i just purchased a serviced identically model today, in anticipation perhaps. I took a serviced one (i hope done i a good way, it was made by a professional) after messing a two head technics dd where I managed to change all the caps, the microswitches but never able to do the right adjustments. I am an office rat, not an electronist. I was able to do make it play as per specs but not to record. Also, i wanted a DD one as the only three headed i own, a pioneer, has terrible ww figures. New belt, everything lubbed, relubbed, the values are still bad. I understood is a simple single capstan mechanism but still, the figures are terrible. Much better than in the beginning but not for my taste. Now, maybe you can help with an answer. I have looked but no walkmans videos. I enjoy using simple walkmans when I get to sleep because I know after 45 minutes this stops. But the mechanism is very noisy. Strangely if I cake in soliconic grease is gets noisier. Should I look another grease type? Or the simple ones are noisy by nature? I do not remember them to be as noisy. The ww values are spot on to be honest. Just so damn noisy. Maybe you can give me an idea. Many thanks

      Salut
Honestly, in order to do an electronics calibration on a RS-BX I would say you only need the service manual (which is free online) a good quality voltmeter that does rms (or in my case, a cheap chinese pocket osciloscope) and a set of real calibration cassettes. I have a video on a 707 that briefly goes over the calibration.
Regarding your pioneer deck, from my experience, new belts are of really poor quality. I usually get better performance from the old belts, if they still exist.
Some walkmans are just noisy and there really is nothing you can do about it. I was also a bit surprised of it when I started getting back into cassettes. I think the reason we don't remember them being so noisy is that we saw them as utilitarian objects, not something to tinker with and get perfect. The noise didn't matter when you had headphones on.
The grease I use, recommended by people on tapeheads.net, is Molykote EM-30L. It doesn't run like siliconic grease and is safe on both plastics and metal parts. In all the decks I did before with silicone grease, the grease eventually melted and ended up all over the place, which I haven't seen with EM-30L. Truth is I have only been using this one for a year, but it looks promising. It will probably not make your walkman quiet tho.
Good luck with your new deck! If done well, it should be a really nice machine.

@@kovutlk I really appreciate taking your tine and answering. I will buy this grease for sure and try a new new belt. Maybe this one was poor quality. Once again, i really appreciate it.

@@kovutlk @SOVIET BEAR again your video helped a lot. The "recently serviced" deck arrived. I have used the first tape, a Nina 60 minutes (good tapes, really cheap but really good) everything smooth. After two days, i used a 90 minutes chrome. Auch. Thought the cassette was sticky. Used the first one, same problem, autostop engaged. Opened the deck. It was recently open indeed but the belt was totally loose. Checked my trash for spare parts (every one has this) and used the old technics belt. Almost perfect fit. Boiled it for 3 minutes and it was perfect. All the bearings were dry as a nun intimate parts. Clean them, oiled them. To be honest I have added some silicone grease on the plastic gears as well and behind the capstans where it sit on the little board. I have not seen if the black geared capstan had the small spring in your video because mine did not had it. Nevertheless. Reassembled it. Using an ebay test tape wfguy showed 2994.6-2995.2 Hz. Same value as for the JVC TDR direct motor and Kenwood kx880 a (I believe it was just a pinch slowly recorded, who knows). But the overall w&f was exactly 0.02. and silent like a mouse. I have used the most problematic tape I had, an Queen original album and it just went through it like cheese. I was so encouraged that at three am pulled the two header technics direct drive, opened it and found the reason why I was not able to calibrate it. A yellow little board potentiometer is dead. In the future i will change it. All in all, with excuses for bothering once again, thank u for the video. It helped a lot. I know usually you do not need to grease the nylon gears but maybe you should try it for the noise. With time the nylon gets brittle, hard and therefore noisy. I repeat, for this one the tapes themselves make more noise than the actual decks mechanics. I wish you a great Sunday!

Good evening, my plate technics rs bx808 inserting an audiocassette type normal, chrome, metal, I always report normal. What should I check? thank you, Orlando.

Clean the tape detect switches on the top of the mechanism with paper and contact cleaner. You can see the switches at 6:03 . They are enclosed in transparent plastic which is easily breakable, so be careful.

Worked on these technics decks and the single capstans as well, 606 707 and the remote control versions.
Thing is these decks have tooooo muuuuch takeup force, that causes variable azimuth in the begining vs mid vs end of thape.
I use the pinch rollers from fix your audio, never got bellow 0,04-0.05 wrms wow and flutter.
I also replaced the cmos switches with relays.
These decks do sound good when head is in good condition and takeup tension is a bit lowered using a zener diode.
      Salutari din Timisoara 😊

@@VladMX I find these decks relatively easy to work on and well documented. I always change D504 to a 4.3v and that usually fixes any stability issues.
To be honest, I've had mixed results with those rollers, but that's just my experience.
For this deck I didn't have to do any modding, it was already done.
      Salutări din Birmingham
