£80 is a damn good price for that deck in that condition. Mine has had the contact problems as well, Deoxit got rid of that and would solve any other pots, I've had my deck for 34+ years, it's used now only for archiving, transferring my SA-X 90's onto an SSD. Have to admit, if I was to sell it (never going to happen) I'd not test if it records either. Been well over 20 years since I recorded anything on that deck. It didn't sound good with metal or normal tapes, also SA 90's weren't great, but the SA-X 90's with a slight bias adjustment sounded to me identical to the source.
You've not been ripped off. I'd snap up a duplicate for £80 if I saw one available.

Thanks for the confirmation. It's a nice deck to have around. Handy for recording speed calibration tapes, and nice to use from time to time.
I must learn how to bias properly. I cheated recently, I looked up the bias guide on an Aiwa deck, and set the bias according to that guide on this deck. Seemed to sound fine to my old ears. Usually though, I'd record on an auto-bias deck.
Ps, sorry for the delay in replying, it seems I don't get notified of some comments.

I have the same deck in my collection however the display doesn't work and the bias knob is slightly off in that if I remove the actual knob and turn the potentiometer all the way down the knob then doesn't line up properly. I suspect the knob came from another machine. Everything else tested fine and the speed was pretty much spot on with very low wow and flutter.
For setting the bias use Audacity to generate a 1Khz tone at -10db and hook the computers audio outputs to the tape deck or save the file as a WAV and burn the tone to a CD using a proper CD burning app that converts the WAV file to CD audio, hook up a CD player to the deck's inputs. Set the decks bias knob to the bottom of it's range and record the tone for 10 seconds or so then turn the knob a dot or two for 10 seconds, another dot or two for 10 seconds and repeat until you've turned the bias knob all the way up.. Rewind and play it back. The bias will be set correctly when the playback display shows a stable -10db matching the original file generated. You can use different tones such as 440Hz, 3Khz etc. if you wish I just tend to use 1Khz. You could also save the WAV file to a phone and hook that up instead of a CD player but many modern phones don't have headphone outputs these days.
I might actually send PW Restoration an email and see how much he'd charge for taking a look at mine to see if he can get the display working, might make an interesting video for him.

@@kevinh96 Sorry for the delay, I seem to be missing comments notifications.
I like your methodology for the bias, but it's probably more work than I'm happy to do 😍. I have an auto-bias deck, I just need to get the speed calibrated to this Technics, then I have the best of both worlds.
I have a couple of decks that I don't have use for. I thought about donating them to PW Restorations. Love his stuff. Way above my level of knowledge or ability though.

Those switches are very common to get dirty and the contacts are lost. It happened with one unit i bought on Ebay, it was sold as defective and that was the problem. And be aware of the cog wheel on the motor that can pop out and you won't be able to play tapes. It needs to be pushed down again or a new one sold on Ebay as they can crack. A Nice Recorder you got there. Built to last.

@@PaulJCost1 Great, thanks for the info and tip. I had heard about a problem with cogs and/or gears, but didn't know it was possibly an easy fix. Thanks.

The seller LIED to you. UNTESTED = NOT WORKING.

I think instead of "working" they should have put "needs a lot of work". Looks like a good deck though, for a two head deck. If it was fully working.

@@EgoChip Hi. Yes, after this long I'm very happy with it. I've been using it for pre-recorded cassettes because the speed is accurate. It has been working fine since I fixed it.

Anyone help, prompted by my success at fixing mini discs based on this wonderful channel I have branched out and acquired a JVC TD W254 cassette deck. The issue is only one deck plays and only in one direction, the other deck doesn't play at all. I suspect it's the belts and probably the way they are routed but hours of searching has produced nothing on how belts are routed to run the reels the correct way.. 😢

Just disconnect the power, open her up, and have a look to see if it's obvious. Careful, mains devices can store charge, so consult an electrician if you're not sure.

Managed to work out belt route, and also cleaned pinch rollers etc... but neither drive will change direction, suspect it's the internal switch and I am not going to dismantle it that much. Thanks again for all the great content

Not to prolong the discussion but as an update and FYI I picked up some more tapes yesterday and the left deck works fine in both directions with these pre recorded chrome tapes, I suspect that my old test tape may have been part of the issue. Fingers crossed

If it wasn't sold as parts then can't you return it? Sure ebay would back you up.

I would. He has video evidence that it doesn't work as sold, so eBay will be on his side.
