    Icelandic🇮🇸 person here! We actually have two letters for ‘th’ sounds! Þ/þ for sharp th's, (e.g. “Theodore”) and Ð/ð for softer ones (e.g. “the”, “there”, etc.).
    So spelling out “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” phonetically in Icelandic would be : „ðe kvikk brán fox djumped óver ðe leisí dogg”! :D

      It's because the only way to read text was for someone else to write it in ink, with a quill. If you write a thorn quickly you can accidentally flatten the loop a little and it looks like a y

    Fun little fact: Thorn has a companion in it's obscurity. You ever notice that the th in "thorn" sounds different than the th in "that"? Well, there were at one point 2 seperate letters for these! Thorn (Þ)dealt with the th without voice, whereas Eth (Ð) dealt with the th with voice!

      ð can stay dead tbh, unless its purpose changes to something more useful. English isn't a fan of differentiating voiced/unvoiced, and trying to add 2 similar letters at once is much harder than 1 or 2 distinct letters, such as to replace the "sh" sound.

    Þis is an interesting idea to bring back "Þorn" as an English letter. I've always wondered why Þey just got rid of a letter which represents a pure ideal of how letters should look like. Perhaps our descendants will try to do Þat.
