As nitpicky as it may sound, the fashion was one of my biggest issues with this film. The original mean girls film had so much thought and attention to detail put into each outfit and how they subtly reflected each character’s personalities. In the new mean girls it seems like they just recycled wardrobes from 2012 Disney Channel shows.

I liked the Halloween scene... but I was upset to see Regina in an angel costume. In the Broadway show, she was a red rabbit, and her ears were done in a way, where they looked like devil horns as she flirted on stage. I was hopeful they would do something like that with her wings or something, but no. (The rest of the scene was pretty cool! I like how they turned all the "sexy party kids" into these "scary zombie props." That sent chills.... the theater was also cold, but still!)

My weird conspiracy theory here is that for whatever reason, they didn’t record the soundtrack in preproduction thinking they could just do it later and work off of maybe a temp mix or just the Broadway version. But then the strike happened so they couldn’t get the actors back into the studio to record the soundtrack for real and Paramount refused to move the release date because that had already lost a bunch of money and they wanted to get whatever they could in front of the Taylor Swift movie coming out in October. It’s a dumb theory I know considering how early the recording is supposed to happen in preproduction, but not having enough time to be fully finished is the only way the weird trailers and the sloppy mix make any sense.

But compared to the original, the girls are so much more sexualized??? Which is made weirder that they’re more age appropriate this time around. Just strange. And so many of the “rewrites” were scenes that were shot for shot, word for word recreated from the original film with just one word changed to avoid something offensive. They cut over half of the musical numbers from the stage show so it winds up feeling like bad recreations of scenes you know from the original intercut with music videos of parts of the stage songs.
The cinematography was the most jarring part of that, the music vs non-music scenes just had entirely different feels. The non-musical scenes lacked framing, energy, and focus at times and the musical scenes just wanted to fly around following the lead in a way that didn't feel theatrical. I guess that's what you get for hiring a DP that has predominately done music videos.

In my opinion the music works so much better on the stage. As a fan of the Broadway musical, the music was the most overwhelming disappointment. I feared that they’d be adapting the musical as an excuse to redo the movie, and that’s absolutely what it felt like. The music definitely feels like an afterthought. It doesn’t have any of the cohesiveness of the Broadway score. A lot of the songs were cut down from their length on Broadway, which is sad bc most of the songs were already cut. I don’t know why they’d cast Cady without considering her vocals, then cut or change all of her songs. She’s the main character. Those songs were how her character was conveyed and how the story moved forward in the musical. When most of these songs are made back into conversations instead, you might as well just watch the original movie. I still had fun… but it was disappointing as an adaptation of the musical.

    • @rat-gang-

and even then it feels like gretchen barely had anything happening in any of her scenes. it felt like there was zero buildup to 'what's wrong with me' and then nothing afterwards til the candy cane scene. they just had a bunch of gretchen screentime, did nothing with it, and then left in the emotional musical number as if it was supposed to save the performance.
also for extra context - stupid with love is a LOT more upbeat and enjoyable in the original musical. i love the original song and even i it felt like it was absolutely dragging. i have to attribute this to the fact that they swapped the genre from an adorably silly, loud, fun song, for a slow indie pop vibe, which just made it feel repetitive and boring, with no big, theatrical belting at the climax of the song to even make it worth it. no one wants a long, slow song with no payoff in the middle of their movie

The songs never hit the highs they’re supposed to, and when they’re turned into generic pop songs, the bad lyrics (which have always been awful) somehow become even MORE awkward. Also the editing was a mess?? World Burn was trying to give me a headache. And who tf put that treadmill scene between Cady and Aaron in the bedroom? Also the movie was ugly to look at?? The lighting and the compositions were so boring and flat. And idk if this was just our theatre, but the cropping of the movie was off? The actors’ heads were just cut in half and you’d have your focal point just… much higher than it’s supposed to be? if you know and love the broadway musical stage version of mean girls from 2018, with also background knowledge from the original 2004 movie, you’d see how lackluster and played down this new movie is. This adaptation took away so much of the wow factor from the songs in the original musical and adapted them into flat pop melodies. Not to mention that while still being a great actress, Angourie doesn’t have a strong enough voice for a musical theatre role. Therefore she falls weak as Cady when comparing her to Erika Henningsen, the original Cady in the musical. Not to mention all the song cuts. They hire an award winner to play Damian and then proceed to cut all of his songs out. What annoyed me most was that this movie tried to lean toward the 2004 movie, and that made it fall very flat as a good movie adaptation of the musical.
On a brighter side, Renee Rapp was excellent as regina george. Not surprising though as she’s already played Regina on broadway as Taylor Louderman’s replacement. Auli’i was also wonderful.

This movie had a whole lot of potential to it, but the main thing that was really missing is; the fact that this IS a musical. I realized that they had taken out a BUNCH of songs from the original broadway musical, and it really shows. The left out parts were very much missed in this movie, even if they were smaller parts. Regina's songs stuck pretty well in this adaption, especially the songs "Someone Gets Hurt", and "World Burn", and "Meet The Plastics" (I was quite sad to see Karen's and Gretchen's part be taken out of "Meet The Plastics"). Reneé Rapp (Regina), Auliʻi Cravalho (Janis), Avantika Vandanapu (Karen), and Jaquel Spivey (Damian) were the actors who really stuck out the most to me, I was not by any means disappointed in their work, I liked Angourie Rice’s performance but I don't think she was the best fit for Cady. The point is tho, is that this was supposed to be a movie adaption of the musical adaption, and in some parts it felt like that, other parts…. it felt like it was just an okay remake of the original film.

as a fan of both the movie and the musical, i actually had higher hopes in some regards seeing that it was kind of a middle ground between both versions of the story. i thought maybe they would get rid of some of the things that didn’t work in the musical, making it the perfect version. instead, they basically put both versions in a blender and sharted out the result. it was so disappointing.

I think the best way to go into this film is by severring it from the original, and considering it a broad adaptation of the stage show. I know that easier said than done because the musical was based on the 2004 film- but that film is an iconic cult classic that ultimately nothing can hold a candle to. My friends and I went into the musical movie with no expectations other than to have fun, and enjoyed it as a campy, colourful adaptation with some (sadly not all!) of the songs from the original musical. My only critique would be that the songs were definitely adapted to cater to a different audience, so i can see how some fans of the OG musical would be disappointed.

i was actually surprised, and the new one wasn't all that bad. although for obvious reasons, a handful of songs had to be cut out. also they made slight tweaks in the lyrics to fit a different arrangement of characters singing some songs (for example, apex predator with janis and damian without cady). and the movie should've been marketed as a musical though... i mean SO MANY people thought it was a remake and were bashing on race swaps or whatnot.
