    Great video and project. I have watched this video probably 20 times and set out to make my own this week and finished it up tonight. My only issue that I am having is getting the miter saw EXACTLY even with the outfeed wings. How precise does this have to be? I'm close, very close but not exact. If I was to error on this side I would want the table just a tick higher than the wings right? I think I "messed up" with my newness to using piano hinges. Thanks.

    A quick bit of constructive criticism...i would have made my bottom shelf (where casters are connected), larger so that the side pieces rested on top of it instead of attached to the side of the piece of plywood giving you more support for the weight on the flat part of the plywood. Keep up the good work....

    • @ronwhite6719

      Very true, support through cross pieces of wood rather than nails/screws. Fasteners are more like place holders. Nice portable stand.

      Also the wings could have rested on the sides of the cabinet, not just on the small strips with the hinge.

      While at it, I would also have added -at least a partial- back piece to prevent lateral motion while using the saw and moving it around...

    This is freaking awesome! One quick thought: would it be slightly more convenient to mount the piano hinges for the wing supports at the back of the cabinet’s sides so that the wing supports can be deployed from the front of the saw stand?

    • @An_Urban_monk
      @An_Urban_monk 5 лет назад +1

      I agree. But I'm curious with a shop as massive as yours why you (April) feel you still need a portable, wing-based mitre stand? The beauty of such a shop is that you can have a dedicated mitre saw station complete with adjustable stop blocks and built in tape measure not prone to wandering. A Master Carpenter friend of mine has just such a station. Now that I have the blessing of being able to afford a custom shop build I planned on having a dedicated, stationary mitre station. Pray, tell your logic for the mobility factor. If the reason is just to create content for the small/temporary shop folks that’s cool too, but it seems like a “real shop” necessitates permanent workstations and deliberate world flow without setup and tear down. That was the bane of my existence in my previous two car garage “shop.” Which never saw a parked car in the past 15 years.

    I wish you had mentioned the back you added - it's only visible at the very end of the vid and is not prominent. You can see the carcass flexes side to side as you're raising and lowering the wings before the back was added; rigidity is crucial with cutting tool stands and this thing sways like a willow in the wind without the back on. That could be dangerous if someone doesn't know to include it.

      i was gunna say to gusset it i always overbuild things but on something that moves around those pocket screws will flex enough to eventually loosen. gussets will prevent this. good eye to catch that i had to rewatch it to see that

    its not a bad solution to the problem, I noticed both the new one and the old one racked quite a bit as you opened the scrap bin. Have you thought about adding a couple of stretchers on your shelves to stop that from happening? I'd be worried over time that the racking would lead to the pocket screws to work their way loose.Also do you use paste wax on the drawer to make it slide easier?

    So the piano hinges are at the front? But isn't it easier to fold the wings from the side they fold to? (the side you call the backside)

    • @davidroe4121
      @davidroe4121 5 лет назад

      Erik Bongers I thought this for a minute too, but then realized that she would’ve had to make the shape of the wings much more complicated. Having them the way she does let’s that support notch fit behind the wings when folded, as opposed to having them hit the wing hinge if the supports were attached to the back.

    Hey April, Small shop with big DeWalt 12" compound sliding mitre saw. No room on my workbench so was using the heavy duty mitre saw stand that was made for the saw. Had to use outside and was very heavy and time consuming to set up. Was concerned if your plywood rolling stand would support the weight. Great news, it works perfect ! Bought your plans and with a few modifications due to the size of my mitre saw, ended up being a very easy and quick build. I now have space to utilize my mitre saw inside my small shop. The folding wings gives the stand a small footprint that I needed. Your Mobile Mitre Saw Stand works FANTASTIC !

    I made mine this weekend, with a few steps to tidy up. On my one, the stop for the supporting arm makes the top bit stick out to the side because I used a fairly wide offcut. I'm planning to cut out a gap in the supporting arm so that the top sits flush with the supporting arm when it's down.

    Where do you buy your plywood!?? All of the plywood I get at Home Depot and Lowe's is warped to hell

    Not only is this a good design but you also do a very good job of explaining the process. For example, when you emphasized making sure you verify you're attaching the piano hinge on the same side of each wing, I thought you were talking directly to me 😂

    Question, It appears that the wings sit higher than the top edge of the base. Is there a reason for this? Could they not be made to sit flush with the case? Thanks

    I was just thinking it would be pretty slick if those folding supports doubled as front doors when not in use.

    Nice. What about adding a back to give it a little rigidity? Looks like it can flex a little side to side.

    how do u ensure the miter saw swivel base and the wings portion on either side are at the same height. I believe miter saw swivel base height differs from one brand to another is it not. So for eg if u have a ryobi that goes well with the stand it may not sit flush if u decide to ditch ryobi and go for a dewalt.

    you could have moved the saw back on the cart top. that would open up the angle and allow for the miter

    Ihave a question why wouldn't you screw the sides on top of the bottom so i
    the weight is on the bottom and not on the screws

    You should have used wheels with brakes.

    What if you put foldable hinges to hold the wings open instead of having two door things

    Don't know how to get the answer to this question, but here goes: why not use glue with the pocket holes?!
