I bought your plans and built the workbench a couple of months ago. It came out great! I didn’t have a track saw and a few other tools so I didn’t do the drawers. Fortunately, I had purchased the plywood and today I started on the drawers with new track saw and track in hand.
My work sent me home last Friday so I’m using the time to work on my shop. We will work from home for at least a month and my work allows me to set my own pace.
So, I want to build another bench but I’ll probably build a table saw cross cut sled and some other useful things first!

Hi April - Another great instructional video! Your use of scrap wood to make tool holders is second to none. Just wanted to share a few ideas ... I used peg board on the ends and on my side to maximize storage space. Plastic totes are great for storing items within the workbench as both stackable and to keep sawdust out. Also, A long power strip below the top helped me out too. Upgrades with vises and/or bench dogs would be a welcomed edition to "workbench 2.0". Thanks for being my favorite RUclips channel. Great job! Im a lady woodworker too. Our shop is only 16 x 32, and once we got all the machines in it, there was no room for a workbench like yours! Aack! We do have my hubbys grandfathers maple workbench however. It has two vises and is well over 100 years old. That’ll work! Many of our hand tools are that vintage as well. Will subscribe.
If you wanted to glue and screw the top sheet of plywood to the bench, you could do like my father used to do with his benches. He would build the bench and the cover the top with a sheet of 1/4" Masonite(wallboard) and when that got beyond use, he would just replace the Masonite. Probably a lot cheaper than replacing the sheet of plywood. I was wondering if you were planning on putting the Kraft paper roll on your bench to protect from paint spills and glue messes? Great project. Keep them coming.
I do the same but have never had to replace the masonite yet 20 years later
Hello April, I’m Héctor Cardenas from Mexico. In the latest two weeks I had iniciating in the carpentry, I have bought a jig saw, drill bits, a Black + Decker Matrix and many other stuffs including many that Already had to begin. When I was looking for working tables I found this in particular that I found easy to build and is made from play wood. My wife and me are renting in a little home in Mexico expecting to change us in the near future, reason for the size of your table was’nt too practice for me, and I decided to make it exactly same but at a quarter of the size. By the time I wrote this I am working the second day, making some mistakes in calculating dimensions and others, I appreciate so much your tips and will be pending to your work I have begun watching. excellent work, a little advice if I may. I have been cabinetmaking for several years, I started to have breathing problems due to the inhalation of dust. I got equipment like this. Finally I got a taste for cabinetmaking.

Very nice setup, April. I found that paraffin works well for wood-on-wood slides. A 1# box of Gulf Wax will last a normal person a lifetime. Another tip is to mark my boxes of screws on several edges so I can easily see which is which, even from an angle. And the last tip is to paint your shop walls, ceiling, and floor pure white. It doubles the amount of apparent light in the shop without any addition of lighting fixtures, and it makes dropped hardware much, much easier to find.

The lighter colour definitely works, and I'm interested to see the wooden ply wall lining - probs to do with insulation in your cold - but it would also do a lot for reducing noise.

I must admit out loud that when you turned over your table and dumped your clamps, I mean really....I have sooo done that, and so very REAL of you to have kept that in the vid. Many of your projects/ideas have sculpted my woodworking/craft spaces into "larger" spaces than they actually are. thx.
When she made the raised garden bed, she got ahead of herself and dumped out potting soil. But I still enjoy watching her videos. I have three of her plans, I just might have to buy this one too.

Very practical, not over-designed, easy to build. Am needing a new workbench for my shop and this fits the bill. I think I'll build this first, and then a Paulk-style bench for field work. Interesting that you have ISOtunes bluetooth ear buds. I use those at work and they are excellent noise-rated ear buds.
I've been looking at ideas for making a workbench and I've come across some superb displays of guys who show off by creating sophisticated workbenches that are quite solid and full of drawers and shelves to hold all their power toys, i.e. their power tools and stuff.
Not that it's bad, but with yours, this is the second video of a workbench made by a woman I've watch and the approach is different and quite interesting. You are not looking to show off your power or show off how skilled you are at designing and building a piece of furniture that is fundamental to the workshop. Instead, you focus on practical, simple, affordable and very ingenious solutions. It is really refreshing to see a more feminine and practical perspective to solve a basic need. Thank you for sharing.
I've been at Bunnings this afternoon racking my brain for just this very solution. I just knew I'd seen these castors before - HERE.
Saw this a few months ago and it inspired me to make a table for myself. Although I went with a different design, your video provided the impetus for my build. And I love those casters, btw.
So I started by finding your work by accident. Then I saved the first project, then another, then another…whew! You became my go to project director. I am an ICU nurse and know the skill and ability of the women I work with. You have such a great organization mind. As you talk through all of your projects it is easier to follow through with each of your projects. I have to admit I don’t have quite the sophistication in my farm shop, but the “thinking through” that you do is greatly appreciated. You are amazing…great work!!
That is a huge workbench. Most of us have to make due with half that space. Now I have workbench envy! 😆

There are a lot of good videos out there and a lot of good projects that people are sharing, and this is a good basic workbench that is very functional, so kudos on that, BUT what really stands out the most in this video is your attitude and passion. It's so obvious that you LOVE woodworking, and that you're super proud with your achieved results. It was more fun watching you work and listening to you talk than 90% of videos I've seen from other people. You smile, you jump around, you cheer, and you have fun! GREAT JOB!!

At 6:20, something you can do is hot glue one of the screws to the outside each box so when looking for a certain type of screw you can find what you are looking for immediately.

I'm the same, living downunder as well, its cool to get some ideas from this for my bench when I build it as well.
For the pvc clamp holder. Just use conduit instead. It’s cheap and pretty strong.
There are a lot of workbench builds on you tube but this one has to be one of the best ones very nice....
I have a feeling you’ve never ran a brad nail into your finger, because you where holding it awfully close to your entry point lol we’ve all done it and swear to keep our hands clear but end up doing it again lol. I love all the quick access to tools. I do the same in my shop, organization and ease of access are critical. That is an awesome workbench Thanks.
happened to me 2 times. first time was all across the finger exiting through a fingernail. no big deal if it doesn't hit the bone. but it is better to nail through the wood and not your finger. an other time was an apprentice working with me nailing his finger with 16gauge nail. the trim was all messed-up with blood. fortunately the painter already had to come back on the job to make some touch ups.
I had a 2.5 inch Brad hit a knot, do a U-turn and go through my thumb and out the nail. That was 16 years ago so now I am back to holding the work close like April. 😉
Thought the same thing - nail hits a hard spot and deflects right on out of the workpiece.
I dont know who this Brad is, but he sounds like a real prick!!!

That's Awesome !!! as someone who has been woodworking for well over 30 years it's a good thing to have a good work bench . The only thing I would do differently is make a larger over hang because I always walk into things with my shins ( ouch) and would most likely knee off all of those screw boxes on the ends , but that's just me cause I'm a Klutz. Great Ideas and a cool workbench !!!

Nice build! One suggestion though, can you move the casters to the inside of the legs so you can't trip on them. Ahh, I re-watched the video and I see they are removable but still would be nice to be able to leave them on if they are on the inside of the leg.
I feel the bench needs a larger over hang for the top. That bench, I'd be hitting stuff with my knees and feet just moving around it. Moving it I'd have stuff jumping and falling out of bins and holders. That's why I have walls. Peg board, peg board everywhere!

Im an electrician for the company that makes pure bond plywood. That sheet you showed the label on is even from the location I work at 😳😳😳 I thought it was neat that pure bond would sponsor your project, even more neat to see the sheets you have are form Klamath Falls!!
I went to Home Depot to buy plywood for this project. I couldn't see anything labeled Pure Bond.

I almost didn't click on this video because I thought it might be another one of those videos where women are just working with wood to show off their bodies and get views, but those attachments you showed off had me intrigued. I'm glad I watched because you're definitely the real deal and I loved all the attachments you added. You get a sub from me.
Utilitarian bench doesn't have to be beautiful, however you managed to do that as well!
I would place another sheet on top just to add a bit of rigidity and flatness.

Consider adding a sheet of simple hardboard on top of the plywood surface. It's only a quarter inch, and easy to replace when it gets gunked up.
I would use a 1" sheet of MDF for the top.
I was thinking the same thing about adding hardboard to the top. Rumor has it a light coat of wax on the hardboard would probably keep glue from sticking as well.
Definitely add a sheet of MDF on top. Super smooth and very dense so you can pound on it when necessary, and serve as a sacrificial top when sawing through other materials. Just a spot of glue in each of the corners to hold in place. That way there are no nails or screws to hit when sawing on it.

Bought the plans for this a few days ago and made it tonight. Super simple and went together well. Not bad to with with one person but a second set of hands would be helpful at times. Also the superjaws are a huge help!

That looks great, April! I took a bench that was out in our arbor, brought it in and glued/screwed about 14 2x4s together to replace the rotted bench top. The top of the bench is strong enough for even occaisional metal work but getting a flat top surface didn't happen. Maybe I went overboard. But I like it. Oh, and only doing the two drill holders before going full-bore all around the bench - smart move!

Thanks April!!! You gave me a number of ideas for the workbench that I need to build. One requirement of my workbench is that it must be possible to quickly break it down in order to move it out through a standard size doorway. I guess that is going to be the biggest challenge for me with it. I'm thinking of possibly mounting something on the bottom of a 4' X 8' sheet of plywood that I can mount legs to, a similar system to brace the legs so they are plumb, and I will need electrical power on mine. Again, thanks for the video.

That is a good idea.
I made a hammer/ mallet holder using a similar method of PVC pipe. I just put a wooden dowel inside matching the ID of the pipe and it's very ridged plus costs only a couple bucks
Glad i checked first. I'm lucky to have all i could ever need, my roommate is an electrician. Those guys throw away so much of that stuff, and in all sizes. They also use a lot of thick wall PVC. PVC works best when you don't use it structurally. Meanwhile, on a recent Woodright Show, Roy was talking about the Sloyd method and the most important wood working books, one of the first illustrations is of a carpenter doing a 'happy dance'. Just needs another plywood support block in the middle, cheapest easiest solution. Or don't care about the sagging because it's not deflecting enough to cause a failure.
Chris Robinson most craftsmen (craftswomen?) are perfectionists. A sagging clamp holder would be the most irritating thing in the workshop to any perfectionist.

Very Nice. FYI.... I wear a shop belt when working. It only has 5 things; tape measure, speed square, pencil, pencil sharpener, sharpie pen. It drives me crazy not to be able to "find' any of these, and the belt stays lightweight.
Where would one get such a belt? I like something similar for my backyard wood projects.

I'd either skip the drawers, or raise them 4" off the floor. When working at a bench, if you can't get your toes under the bench, you end up leaning forward and it becomes real tiring, very fast. The ovehang on your bench top might be enough, but personally, I would have left enough room to get toes under the drawers.
Robin Szemeti there’s an overhang on the tabletop. So feet room won’t be an issue.
Good point. Same reason why these fancy sinks that protrude out of the counter are nice for washing dishes. You can get right up to them without hunching over.

Thank you April! This is a true inspiration. Did it and made it. It should cut 60% of setup time off my projects. But the important part was... Another step in the PTG world. Not PTSD, Post Traumatic Growth. There are about 20 soldiers waiting for me to build this. Just to prove something I guess. Wish I could drop pictures of it. Many are going to use it. I have watched several videos on work benches. And by far this one is simple and efficient for most needs . . A lot of the vids was ether a plain table or some masterpiece that you wouldn't want to drop a tool on let alone build something on it lol . Simple quick cheap and does the needs of most of us weekend woodworking fools hehe thank you .

April instead of replacing the top with plywood down the road why not use inexpensive panel 1/4 in panel board and replace when its worn down less expensive i been using this as a way of saving that great plywood
A 1/4 board doesn't have enough rigidity for what I'm using it for. But also, it will take me years to damage this top enough to replace it that the expense is worth it to me.
April Wilkerson I think what he means is using a 1/4 panel on top of the plywood so the plywood doesn't get damaged while retaining rigitidy. And it's easy to replace. I think that is a good idea.
Well thought out and very practical as well. Wanted to get a cut list from you but not sure what to do next. Hope that its not too much to ask. Great set up you have as many woodworkes need that kind of space.

Just built mine. It was tough for my first project. Learned a lot, got frustrated a lot, but in the end, it's built and I love it. Just added my square holders (nice touch) and now I'm interested if the table could hold a vice anywhere. Suggestions?

I like it. Pretty functional and simple to build. I do not like that the legs are ply wood where they meet the floor. They might sometimes set on a wet floor. They might crunch apart when you slide the bench around (If you don't use those Rockler wheels). . Mount feet on the legs? Or use solid wood legs?
As long as the shop doesn't get flooded, the legs will be fine. A little bit of water won't do any real damage
If it's for a little maker shop it's fine any other real shop that thing would be destroyed in a matter of months if not sooner. Also any type of hammering, is going to rattle the crap out of those tool and screws and and. Butt joints suck, at least rabbit them, gives a little more rigidy. I'd also a least put ....... Nevermind I could list a ton. I will give her props for going for it at least.

Just a suggestion, I would add a second layer of plywood to the top. Very nice build. The building seems dark in the videos, is that just the camera (you seem lit well, but background, walls and floor areas seem dark)? Glenn Lever

this is probably the most practical workbench video I have watched, enough simplicity and great effort spent on organizing the storage and utility, rather than planing and jointing 500 kg of wood.
Your presentation style kept me engaged for the full 11:58. Yes, I'm almost 70 years old with an acquired short attention span.🥸 This video was a non-stop series of excellent solutions for a range of small but important storage needs. I looked at a number of workbench storage videos and yours is in my opinion among the best, certainly the most inspiring. Well done!

Hi, ich bin von Deutschland und mein Englisch ist nicht sehr gut. Da ich aber das Video super finde und ich es nicht ohne Kommentar verlassen möchte versuche ich mit Hilfe einer Übersetzung durch Google.
Das Video ist sehr toll gelungen und die Werkbank finde ich einfach genial gebaut und die Tools daran sind spitze. Ich möchte mir auch eine Werkbank bauen, die in meine kleine Werkstatt passt. So habe ich mir schon viele Videos angeschaut, um viele Ideen zu haben. Bei mir muss ich noch gedenken mit einem Rollstuhl um die ganze Bank zu kommen. Aber mit diesem Video könnte ich mir vorstellen, keine weiteren Videos anschauen zu müssen, da ich hier meine Idee zu mindestens 3/4 umsetzten kann.

The video is very well done and the workbench I think is just ingeniously built and the tools are great. I would also like to build a workbench that fits into my small workshop. So I have already watched many videos to have many ideas. With me I have to remember to come with a wheelchair around the whole bank. : ) Thank you Eric. Yep! The guys came on Tuesday and set the pole then ran the wires to connect it to the other pole. Now it's up to me to handle the direct bury from the pole to my shop. I met with a rock saw contractor this week so just need to get him booked.
