It will forever irritate me that those people made her out to be a villian when she was grieving as well. She had to deal with the lose of her daughter and husband. She also has to live with the shame of having a murderer as a son and him being the only family she has left.
Yeah I get it, but she made a shit ton of mistakes in parenting kevin. That being said, I don't know how the townspeople could have possibly known that she was a shitty mother to him.
@@poundmytomtom she wasn't the only one to make mistakes though, the dad let Kevin get away with ALOT and didn't notice his wife struggling with their child simply because he was good as gold whenever Daddy was around. "I spent 8 years trying to get to him and another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I knew that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely, and simply, evil." Samuel Loomis
Fun facts: Carpenter's inspiration for the "evil" that Michael would embody came when he was in college. While on a class trip at a mental institution in Kentucky, Carpenter visited "the most serious, mentally ill patients". Among those patients was a young boy around 12 to 13 years old. The boy gave this "schizophrenic stare", "a real evil stare", which Carpenter found "unsettling", "creepy", and "completely insane". Carpenter's experience would inspire the characterization that Loomis would give of Michael to Sheriff Brackett in the original film. Debra Hill has stated the scene where Michael kills a German Shepherd was done to illustrate how he is "really evil and deadly".
I met a kid like that. The girl kept threatening to kill the other third graders. She tried to drown her sister in a bathtub. There is a picture of her mom being pregnant and the girl looking like she was going to hit her in the stomach. Those were definite signs. The mom was both in denial and knew she had to do something.

My son is a psychopath. This movie really affected me because I have gone through the scary moments that Eva is going through. I was terrified he would take a rifle and shoot a bunch of people off a watch tower and then kill himself afterward. There was no help. We spent thousands upon thousands on psychiatrists, psychologists, mental hospitals and everything else we could think of. We saw case workers. Authorities had no advice but told us we had to find a way to control our son even though he was uncontrollable. Everybody blamed us as parents. The only thing that helped was sending him to Juvenile detention. He still doesn't care about other people, especially women but he values his freedom enough to fit in as an adult now.It was therapeutic to see this mother struggle with all her emotions. She can't stand him, is scared of him and still loves him with all her heart all at the same time. She blames herself for everything that happened and believes she deserves to be treated badly. @@gRinchY-op5vr Exactly, also the mother's neglectful acts towards the baby would've 1000% either caused death or the baby would've become mentally ill (hence his sociopathic tendencies). Why didn’t they take him to a child therapist in the movie the mother also had personality issues she never held him hugged and loved him as a baby. When an infant is deprived of that contact it will always lead to problems.
We see in the film she does take him to professionals atleast once and is brushed off, the dad blames her suspicions of Kevin on how she felt about the pregnancy and how being a mum has changed her life and is just flat out in denial his son has something wrong with him. We also see in the film she tries showing Kevin affection as a child, he rejects her every time and as a baby cried unless it was the dad holding him. Some parents experience a situation just as dark and disturbed as this, sometimes they experience much worse.
I just finished this movie - it was EXCELLENT!! Kevin as a child played his father like a fiddle. He knew how to act and how to manipulate his mom. As a mom, it would be impossible to turn your back on your child. but when Kevin... (spoilers ahead) . . . . .. . . I watch this movie on Thanksgiving with some of the members of my family. It had us in a big discussion of this behavior of nature or nurture. We couldn't come up with a satisfying answer to this conclusion. It is a very thought provoking film.
Personally I felt during the moments that took place in the present time where the towns people were harassing her and blaming things on her it was possibly trying to make a statement about PTSD. Of course this is self explanatory, but, you realize that this harassment and mental breakage happens during the anniversaries of the event. Hear me out, when someone suffers from PTSD from a specific event that happened at a certain time their mental health starts to decline during the same time it happened ,for this case, a couple years before. As the anniversary nears her brain is building up this pain and almost anticipation that something is going to happen and she can’t stop it. It might be me just over analyzing but that really stood out to me.
"I pooped." The fragmented, non-linear narrative is a bit of a pain, but overall, the movie features some solid performances (Swinton is always a pleasure to watch) and a pretty jarring ending. It's not exactly a surprise, but it's certainly a bitter pill to swallow!
Awesome review dude. Silent films require a lot of deep thoughts and perspectives. Your rhetorical questions as to how to even know if your child is a born psychopath early on are so relatable. Honestly you truly don’t know up until they have their first kill. They’re so introverted you can’t even tell straight on. Scary. Your comment at the beginning was funny too. I knew of ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ long before Ezra played in the well known theatre films such as Perks of Being a Wallflower and the one where he played The Flash etc. Ezra Miller is a highly underrated actor.

Good breakdown. This is one of those movies that sat on my DVR list for a month or 2 before I finally made the effort to sit down and watch it. I enjoyed it, but I haven't had the urge to watch it again since. You can kinda see where the movie's headed. The only thing that really surprised me was the implement of choice.
I just watched this movie & was almost in tears many times watching it. Incredible acting for the whole cast! This is definitely a powerful film. The ending lost me a little, I was hoping for more of a deep conversation between Kevin and his mother. But for the most part, it’s definitely not what I was expecting, i agree idk if I’ll watch it again…but I enjoyed it for the most part!
I agree that its spread a bit thick in terms of the little kid and his insanity...I mean when he breaks his arm he just looks up at Tilda Swinton and grins like a fucking demon. What child doesn't scream in agony when they fuck their shit up that badly? The Spawn of Satan, that's who.
Interesting review here. Some statements I agree with whereas others I don't. Personally I LOVE this movie and have unabashedly watched it five times now. Great all round performances with a fascinating storyline plus a great soundtrack too. Lynne Ramsay's direction was also up there with everything else. My favorite film of all time in fact.
@LL I hadn't noticed this but will definitely look out for it the next time I see it. This film is so amazing that I'm always noticing new things upon each viewing.
While I feel like the ending of this movie with the hug and connection between them could have easily been dumb if in a different movie or if they had changed anything in this movie to lead up to this. It was incredibly emotional even if Kevin is a psychopath or whatever, people who are psychopaths aren't completely emotionless, and it made you almost feel bad for him. Like having that regret that he did that and wishing he could just be at home again. That ending, seeing some of his emotions after seeing his lack of them the whole movie and after seeing what he did, was so impactful to me. And seeing the mom hug him because you know there's a part of her that just wants to see him in a good light, even if he ruined her life in so many ways, and its almost more impactful because of their extremely strained relationship even before this happened. It was a good movie. Also, Ezra Miller's really hot. [Although after recent events I must say they are a terrible person irl.]
If the mom had communicated with her husband and actually corrected her sons behavior instead of just acknowledging it as bad behavior and letting him get away with it, kevin might have had a chance at a normal life.
This movie was truly great i saw it just once a few years ago, and it totally shocked me, and i couldn't believe how underrated it is, maybe is because it has a really heavy and strong themes, i want to rewatch it, just to see the perfomances, i agree with the kid scenes being not as good, the kid kinda annoyed me more than actually being intriguing good review!, i'm surprised you talked about this film
The parents were terrible.. especially the mom who KNOWS something is wrong but doesn't push the father any further. She let him get away with the whole "he's just a boy" bullshit. The mom especially is to blame because not only does she KNOW that there's something wrong with Kevin but she fuckin snaps at him multiple times ( hitting his hand, throwing him resulting in his arm being broken ). This is basically a PSA on how NOT to parent. The answers are clear and not tough with regards to what to do about a kid like Kevin ( GET HIM PSYCHIATRIC HELP ).
In response to your claim that young kevin was too blatantly evil, the way I read it was that similar into the book, Eva is an unreliable narrator, so seeing Kevin as an embodiment of evil is her misconstrued point of view.
I just watched this movie tonight and was left feeling like I loved the acting but maybe didn’t understand the overall point. This video makes me feel like I have a better understanding at what the movie was maybe trying to teach or tackle. Great job! 👍🏻
I read the book before I saw the movie.Like you;Ive only watched it once.Close to the book;but you're right. The young Kevin could have been more subtle in the movie.
Why would re-watchability affect a score? Who the hell wants to re-watch this movie. It was very well-done. It was extremely heavy-watching, obviously. That ending....after all that..after killing her husband, maiming her daughter, killing her daughter and killing who knows how many in the high school..she hugs him. She keeps visiting him in jail be fore that..out of guilt?
For me, the point was that something can be obsessively overwhelmingly important to me now yet in two years, I’ll barely remember why I cared about it so much. At the end Kevin is 18 and in prison for something he doesn’t know why he cared about enough to do. He would’ve been in a dorm, starting classes, making new friends, getting an internship in another town far from his family. Some teenagers just never think about how in two years they’ll be grown adults on their own and can do whatever they want. Kevin was the problem. His mom was the enabler.
I haven’t seen the movie yet. One thing I can say is that there were reports from Ezra Miller’s friends that he didn’t disengage from the character off set and displayed Kevin’s persona in real life, and predictably drove people away. I’m not sure what that meant as far as applying the persona into method acting with Tilda Swinton. I heard in a video that he didn’t want he mom around while he was in character as not to scare her. This was a you tube vid about Ezra Miller in general, and not solely on his role in this movie.
Well, given all of his arrests and trouble with the law this year, I think it's safe to say that he was basically just being himself in this movie. He wasn't actually acting as a character.
You ever see the collector 2009 and the sequal the collection? Such awesome movies if you havent seen them yet they are awesome and id like to see you review them eventually
I was Kevin. But because my dad tried to drown and kill me. Im still mostly sociopathic but not psychopathic. Really cant help it. Its hard to connect with people when both your parents severed it and it reflects in your work, at school, even on the streets. You feel out of place so disconnected that ideas like this haunt you. Most people fear me and I don't do much to cause it.
If you absolutely know your child is psychotic you give them up . Period. Give them to the State. You cannot raise Michael Myers or Freddy Kreuger. It's out of my hands. They need professional help. She was never happy in my eyes. She was being driven crazy by her whole life.
This movie has been on my watch list for some time, need to get on it because it intrigues me. Have you watched Mind Hunter on Netflix? It delves in this a bit since it is about the FBI agent who developed profiling. Oh and Cody, I WANT YOUR T-SHIRT!!!! Yeah I'm one of those weirdos who loves Rob Zombie. His music more than his movies. LOL!
That first evil look when she's trying to get him to throw the ball I growled "Eat him, bitch! You gave birth to him. He came outta your body. He's yours. Fucking eat him alive, dogs do when they know something's wrong, you can too!"
Parents no longer know how to discipline their children anymore and it's been that way for a while. I think this speaks to the overindulgence or trying to find an alternative to hitting, screaming and other bad forms of punishment. My mother was very verbally abusive to me and even she doesn't know why she picked fights with me. She was a blackout rager and she was mean. No, I don't think children should be beaten, but there needs to be some clear cut rules/guidelines to know when it's a pop on the butt or what some know as a spanking, usually not too hard but it did maybe wound our pride I guess you could call it. Also, the mom didn't really bond with him, she had a hard time showing him affection, not even holding him correctly but she did try. If you watch "Ordinary People" you will see some similarities to it. No, no one shoots out a school, but it was about how we deal with trauma, loss, fighting the stigma of going to see a counselor or psychologist because while it wasn't a terrible thing to do, MTM's character thought they should not speak of it. AND IT WAS NEEDED AT THE TIME because it really started breaking down that stigma. In nurture vs nature, most psychologists, social workers including the flakes, and even criminologist will almost always say it's both: a predisposition is there but it doesn't make someone a complete psychopath. Thing is also that some of the places that might have helped him basically want to drug them up, not all but there are some very tough cases.
I really like the idea of the movie and the questions that it brings up, but it just barely missed the mark. I completely agree on the subtly aspect. The kid being a fucking wack job kinda made the father's perspective a little unrealistic. Theres no doubt that kid has real issues and the dad saying he's just a normal kid just doesn't seem possible.
Jeffrey Dahmer used to kill small animals as a child, and put their heads in the backyard. If someone would've taken him to a psychiatrist back then, maybe he could've been helped. Maybe. We'll sadly never know.
Highly recommend the book of We Need To Talk About Kevin. Read it before I saw the movie and it had me in tears!!! Don’t know if it would have the same affect going the other way though
I really disliked the first 40 minutes because I thought the flashbacks were done in a needlessly enigmatic way, but once the story kicked in with Kevin as a toddler it got much better
Yeah, the movie should've started there even just before she got pregnant, so you could immediately see how disconnected as a parent she was to her first born. I get it, it happens, but I had no sympathy for the Mum in the book. She literally created a monster.
I had to misfortune watching this thing last night and it is one of the most ridiculous movies I’ve ever seen. The kid they hired does not look related to the parents at all. I thought there was gonna be some sort of plot twist related to this but no it has to do with archery. Who did the casting in this movie? The flashback format was also incredibly irritating. I found the movie completely unbelievable, and kind of funny because it was so so over-the-top. She should’ve broken his other arm and sent him to an institution part of the movie. Lil demon!

Great video man!! Glad to have u back doing your thing.
Yep exactly
Interesting review here. Some statements I agree with whereas others I don't. Personally I LOVE this movie and have unabashedly watched it five times now. Great all round performances with a fascinating storyline plus a great soundtrack too. Lynne Ramsay's direction was also up there with everything else. My favorite film of all time in fact.
@LL I hadn't noticed this but will definitely look out for it the next time I see it. This film is so amazing that I'm always noticing new things upon each viewing.
Ooooh, The Prestige. That's my favorite Nolan film. Looking forward to that review.
The only right answer is get them mental help
The book was terrifying and quite a hard read tbh 😖🥺😦.
@@lostbunny8491 *they, and agreed very great actor. Sadly not a good person though.
@@lostbunny8491 *They are
I'm very glad I came across your channel, sir.
If the mom had communicated with her husband and actually corrected her sons behavior instead of just acknowledging it as bad behavior and letting him get away with it, kevin might have had a chance at a normal life.
This movie was truly great i saw it just once a few years ago, and it totally shocked me, and i couldn't believe how underrated it is, maybe is because it has a really heavy and strong themes, i want to rewatch it, just to see the perfomances, i agree with the kid scenes being not as good, the kid kinda annoyed me more than actually being intriguing
good review!, i'm surprised you talked about this film
As a son myself I'm glad I did not turn out like this kid
The parents were terrible.. especially the mom who KNOWS something is wrong but doesn't push the father any further. She let him get away with the whole "he's just a boy" bullshit. The mom especially is to blame because not only does she KNOW that there's something wrong with Kevin but she fuckin snaps at him multiple times ( hitting his hand, throwing him resulting in his arm being broken ). This is basically a PSA on how NOT to parent. The answers are clear and not tough with regards to what to do about a kid like Kevin ( GET HIM PSYCHIATRIC HELP ).
She does tell him and he doesn't listen to her. He gaslights her. He needed to pay more attention and be a better father.
Great job! 👍🏻
Love this flick. Kinda surprised to see you cover it but cool!
I read the book before I saw the movie.Like you;Ive only watched it once.Close to the book;but you're right. The young Kevin could have been more subtle in the movie.
I like to that movie I feel like it's rewatchable but not often it's like one of those once-in-a-blue-moon type of movies
Have never seen this one, but it's on my list now! Great Review Cody
Thank you
For me, the point was that something can be obsessively overwhelmingly important to me now yet in two years, I’ll barely remember why I cared about it so much.
Just finished it, time to go watch some happy shit
Was Ezra Miller typecast? We need to talk about Ezra too
Very underrated & disturbing film
This movie takes the good son and improves in all ways like you actually dive into the mind of him
You ever see the collector 2009 and the sequal the collection? Such awesome movies if you havent seen them yet they are awesome and id like to see you review them eventually
I was Kevin. But because my dad tried to drown and kill me. Im still mostly sociopathic but not psychopathic. Really cant help it. Its hard to connect with people when both your parents severed it and it reflects in your work, at school, even on the streets. You feel out of place so disconnected that ideas like this haunt you. Most people fear me and I don't do much to cause it.
Any parent should recognize that Kevin , even as a kid, was very off.
You should read the book
If you absolutely know your child is psychotic you give them up . Period. Give them to the State. You cannot raise Michael Myers or Freddy Kreuger. It's out of my hands. They need professional help. She was never happy in my eyes. She was being driven crazy by her whole life.
This movie makes me never want to have any children ever!
Kinda sad , like what do you do?
Throw it away it’s broke 😂😂😂😂
Lol
This movie has been on my watch list for some time, need to get on it because it intrigues me. Have you watched Mind Hunter on Netflix? It delves in this a bit since it is about the FBI agent who developed profiling. Oh and Cody, I WANT YOUR T-SHIRT!!!! Yeah I'm one of those weirdos who loves Rob Zombie. His music more than his movies. LOL!
Sounds like a great movie. Hopefully this movie is on Netflix.
great review
This was a good review Cody and you know I dont do horror. I send people to you for that lol. But I might have to check this out.
A bad seed should be snuffed out, the sooner the better.
This movie is the perfect answer to your girlfriend when she starts talking about kids.
You can’t do anything to a psychopath . Any reaction you give them will just feed the narcissistic traits they have .
children like Kevin don't feel shame or fear, so "discipline" or punishment in this case literally wouldn't work.
Don't know if this movie is on Netflix but its on Hulu.
Didn't you notice that the kid turned adorable every time the dad came through the door?
What would you do if you had a son named kevin
I'd talk about him.
in my life the character of Kevin (his behavior) is nothing normal my mom an dad would have either killed him or gave him away mom 😅
i cant find a review about this movie that does not suck... including this one
For real there’s people like that 😂😂😂 5:00 and I’m about to do that was Stephen Hawking book 12:43
I like "Willard"
Highly recommend the book of We Need To Talk About Kevin. Read it before I saw the movie and it had me in tears!!! Don’t know if it would have the same affect going the other way though
At first I thought it was a grudge fan film ima check it out
That intro didn't age well 💀
Looks like I need to check this one out
I’m 13. I collect horror films just like you Cody we should do a podcast. By the way I live in Virginia
Why did the son murder the dad I thought he loved him
After recent Ezra Miller event
We dont know how much is nature v nurture.
Did you just make a joke about Barry Allen
I had to misfortune watching this thing last night and it is one of the most ridiculous movies I’ve ever seen. The kid they hired does not look related to the parents at all. I thought there was gonna be some sort of plot twist related to this but no it has to do with archery. Who did the casting in this movie? The flashback format was also incredibly irritating. I found the movie completely unbelievable, and kind of funny because it was so so over-the-top. She should’ve broken his other arm and sent him to an institution part of the movie. Lil demon!
I am Froster parent and I have seen it all
I might be a little gay
