@yo_hello I just finished watching this film for the first time. I agree with you. Needs a sequel. I'm sure Mackey can't stop killing. And I need to see Mackey either caught or killed
My neighbor is a pedophile and tried to pull something on my 10 year old brother once this movie just made me think about that and it's a lot more terrifying
I just watched this flick last night and I loved it. That ending, man... If they ever make a sequel I hope make Davey into a Laurie Strode Halloween 2018 type survivor so when Mackey comes back he's not going to have an easy time.
I got to ask. As a person who also does reviews and I am working on one for this movie.. Did you at least catch the concept of the movie? They were using clichés to subvert expectations. They use the clichés we all know to lead us to falsely assume we know how the movie ends. That is what makes the payoff so much more of a shock. While I'm not sure If I feel the movie is great. They really did do something pretty unique with how they pulled the subversion off.
me too. its just mean. luls you in with a nice coming of age mystery story and then gets unnecessary brutal in the last 5 minutes, leaving you with a bleak ending. imagine goonies were chuck gets shot in the face for no reason at the end. i get what they were going for but i dont like it, no sir.

Great review. I watched this film about a week ago and loved it! it's everything I love about this genre from the period to the music, mystery and suspense. For anyone complaining that this is in some way a rip off of stranger things, well you can easily argue that stranger things has taken large cues from the Goonies, Super 8 (which in itself is a wannabe Speilberg movie from the 80's) and others. I was irritated when the parents did what the did, I thought this cannot be happening, something will derail their plan to knock on the door and have their kids apologies and give everything away, but no. The only other area of this movie I didn't like was at the end, when the cop is in hiding after being busted, knowing it's the kid who's destroyed his life, and they don't stick even one police officer in the house to protect the kids, before of course, they're kidnapped.
ending was unrealistic though. The killer was gone, oolice didnt search houses in the vicinity? And killer getting the two boys out of the house undetected (shitty parents). hmmz .
Stranger things was good (yes, was good. Second season is almost garbage) but doesnt started this 80s nostalgia. This movie totally stand by itself. It was really a surprise.
I’m really happy that you reviewed this movie! I saw this film a couple weeks ago in theaters with a Q&A with one of the writers of the film! Believe it or not, this film was actually written two years before Stranger Things was released, so at the time, the 80’s nostalgia wasn’t that big yet. The writer mentioned how Stranger Things was a blessing and a curse, since Stranger Things helped the film get greenlit and made, but was a curse because that’s the major thing people compare it to and judge it for. He also mentioned that Disturbia and (if I remember correctly) Rear Window were big influences on the movie. The writers actually never intended for the movie to be a “guess the killer” sort of movie. In their mind, it was always Mackey and were surprised when people told them who they thought the killer was going to be. The final act was another reason this film took a while to get made since a lot of studios wanted the ending changed until they came across one who loved what they were doing. I’m glad this movie got some love from you because I definitely think this will be one of most overlooked gems of the year.
I watched this movie after your recommendation on fave movies of the decade, thank you so much for introducing me to this little gem! It was sooo good and I hard agree about them having the balls to go where they did with this film. Super rewatchable!
I just finished summer of 84 and its a great movie i love the call back line from the beginning like it just gives u that idea of anyone can be crazy anyone can be a killer
The way Mackey's always saying "hey, if you wanna come in I can show you"; something he does with alot of the characters makes you wonder how viscous and ready to kill he always was. The scene when the dad makes the kids confess to digging up the garden Mackey does this again....makes you wonder, would this dude just murder everyone, There's something so dark at the core of this film. It's a masterpiece
For me, the true statements about not knowing people for who they are was the scariest part. I hope to see the actors in more movies in the future. Lots of great chemistry as well.
Excellent review as always! I bought it yesterday from Amazon and LOVED IT! I graduated high school in 1984, so it really hit home. I was so lucky to grow up in the 70s and really grow up in the 80s. Lol. Back to the film, I thought I had it all figured out and was wrong a couple of times. This thing was a welcome, giant surprise that I’ll watch over and over. Thanks Cody! Unpleasant Dreams! Glen P. - Fellow Killer Flicksters, Huge fan!
14:22 haven't watched the movie, but all the older adults in my life always talk about how sheltered and babied, kids are these days. "Back in my day, you could just walk out of the house. No cell phones, just had to be back before night fall." So when I watch thing like this in always wondering if it was really like that. It would be terrifying to walk down the street without a phone, set to emergency 911 at the click of a button. Like tf.
Watched it hated/loved it and saw a comment saying this one was the same and while I like summer of 84 I think super dark times is just more scary/disturbing
Just watched this tonight. I lived through the mid to late 80s as a young kid and it did the suburbs so well for that time period. Immediately brought me back. Very well done movie and I plan on adding it to the collection.
Ok Cody, you got me more excited about seeing this movie. Got plans to watch this with the family, Saturday night after putting up Halloween decorations, in the dark with popcorn.
I did what you said to do. I got right up to spoil talk, got out of the video, bought Summer of 84 on Amazon, and am back to say you are so right! This movie was just as good as you described. Awesome review and recommendation!!
I just wanna say man u gotta be the coolest and realest movie reviewer out there! Awesome videos and your reviews mean alot on my decisions of what movies to watch!
I absolutely agree with you Cody, 100%. Unfortunately I came across this movie late, a couple of weeks ago on Shudder. This is the best flick I've seen in 2020. And probably in a while. Great channel man! Sad to see Woody go though.
This movie had a "vibe" to it where it didn't feel like anything but a set piece, where you knew it was the 80's. But you're right, didn't hammer you over the head with it. Was super happy with the film itself, nothing groundbreaking, but that's exactly what we needed. A fun, mostly feel good horror film set in an awesome decade.
I loved this movie! Highly recommend the director's last movie "Turbo Kid" also Le Matos did the score for that movie also, was my favourite movie of 2015.
This movie was such a surprise when it came out! I loved this film and I agree that those twists and that ending really gave a middle finger to expectations. I was wondering if you have seen the film Knuckleball? That one went under the radar but I truly enjoyed the cat and mouse of that film, the acting, and it also had a few surprises. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
Just finished watching this and it was a P H E N O M E N A L thriller/horror. The shock was definitely there and I am now on a quest to find something that can give me this same enthusiasm! Disturbia came out when I was in high school and it’s my favorite type of film. Loved it!
Watching summer of '84 after revealing it was the neighbour being the killer and couldn't be found, I'm like: he's in the house and you fucked up. I was right, they got kidnapped and put on an island far away his friend who looks exactly like my friend Oliver, died
agreed with every point, so84 is really one of the best thrillers of 2018. im just amazed by all around quality of this film: script, camera work, acting, suspense, score. regardless of big similarities with stranger things it still awesome and of course third part of the movie is just cherry on the top. this movie needs more reviews and recognition in general to support indie moviemakers.
I just watch the Movie Summer of 84 this morning it was really good and I order the DVD after watching it.Thanks Cody for recommended this movie reminds me of Stand By Me just with a different twist.
Summer Of 84 Positives And Negatives: Positives: The 4 Kids, Mackey, The Horror, The Comedy, The 80’s Vibe, The Ending, The 2nd Act, The Love Interest Mixed: The Kills Negatives: Davey’s Parents Overall: 9.5/10, This Movie is Everything to Me Bro
I kind of thought the red herring was the guy washing the car, who was flipping everybody off. They kept showing him, so I thought they were going to reveal him as the killer, but nope... he was just there.
xxoxia, I had two scenarios. Well, maybe three. First obvious one was Mackey himself. Next one was that it was the main girl’s father. Nikki tells Davey that her father knows and I think was friends with Mackey. So I thought they were going to have Mackey be the red herring but it was really Nikki’s father doing the killings and Mackey was acting odd because he was covering it up. Maybe like a semi-corrupt cop of some kind. I thought Nikki’s parents’ marital problems/possible divorce was going to somehow play a part as to why he was killing kids (part of the motive that we’d learn about later on). The third possibility builds on the second one and that Mackey AND Nikki’s father were working together and that there was actually two killers. Kind of like the Scream movies. I watched Drumdum’s review before watching the movie and he said that things get pretty crazy and he was hinting that Mackey was the killer. But I was thinking there was more to it and that he had a partner. So I thought they were going to pull what Scream did with Ghostface and have Mackey have a partner which would be Nikki’s father. They kept mentioning Nikki’s parents’ problem a few times throughout the movie, so I thought that was going to play a bigger role later on, which it didn’t. Maybe the whole talk of divorce flipped a switch in Nikki’s father and he decided to take his anger out on all the boys in the town, or maybe a teenage boy did something horrible to Nikki. So with that, he teamed up with Mackey and the two decided to start murdering all the boys in the town. I do know Scream is a 90’s movie, but I feel that shouldn’t stop the movie making a reference to another movie from a different decade. But yeah. That’s my thoughts on who I thought was going to be the killer.
Hey Cody and Cody's viewers, if you liked Summer of 84 go and check last year's Super Dark Times. Intense flick on a similar teen drama meets thriller tip with some thriller/horror vibes to it at moments. It's also nostalgic, but maybe not as much as Summer of 84, and it's set in 90's for a change. A must watch if you enjoyed this one. Cheers!
This movie was really really surprising ! I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I feel like anyone complaining about it being too much of a stranger things rip off is solely thinking about that. But when you go into this movie without that mindset you are blown away. It will be mediocre to most who pass up these 80s type films because they’re overused. But if you enjoy a good performance and a great story with an outstanding ending I strongly recommend summer of 84. This was a great video !!
I just watched this and can't find an answer to my question anywhere on Google. Hopefully someone can answer this for me here... *possible spoiler alert* Unless I missed something, the movie doesn't explain why Curtis comes back from the festival and tells Eats that he is positive Mackey is not the serial killer and that he knows for certain, to which Eats says he needs to hear the story of why he's saying this. Curtis says he'll explain it and Eats asks if he can stay the night at his house because his parents are fighting. He then turns off the walkie talkie instead of looking out for his friends who are still in Mackey's basement and leaves with Curtis to go to his house. It never explains why Curtis says this to Eats or why he suddenly thinks he is positive Mackey is innocent, nor does it explain how he came to this conclusion. They also never contact Woody and Davey to tell them anything. It just drops off and neither character is seen again besides a brief flash at the very end showing Curtis and his (dad?) throwing out Regan signs on his front lawn. Did I miss something? Or maybe it was a really crappy cut that was made last min in the movie? Did anyone else wonder what the hell happened?
@@CodyLeachYT Ahhh thank you so much for explaining that. I guess I missed that part. I still think it's pretty crappy they said nothing to their friends still in the basement tho. Unless of course I missed that too, hahaha
The climax of this movie just grabbed me. I liked it the whole way, but that last 20 minutes or so really got me where I was like 😮 the whole time. Was NOT expecting it to take a nose dive into how dark it went, and that “thing” they did was ballsy as hell, yet subtle enough to where it didn’t just completely lose me by trying too hard for emotional shock. I’m torn between wanting a sequel, and loving the uneasy feeling they left me with.
The parents! Ah! Forgot about them. But I feel like as a child if I ever went to my Mom or grandma with the same concerns, they would have listened to me, or at the very least had a serious conversation. Fuck those parents.
Well Sir, Yet again you're review was spot on. I watched the review then the movie. It was a fun bit of nostalgia mixed with pure wicked horror fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for all your reviews. Sometimes I actually prefer your reviews more tgan the the films LOL
I just heard about and watched it for the first time. Might be my favorite serial killer movie ever. It’s crazy there’s not more buzz about this movie. The acting was really good, the story was really good. It definitely reminds me of disturbia except this is better done and more intense and enticing. 19 but it’s still nostalgic because I grew up watching movies mostly from 80s and 90s and my early childhood was reminiscent of this movie. 10/5 stars.
Thing is, they captured the 80s regarding lost children. There was no John Walsh to push the issue. It was a very good portrait of pointing out how limited law enforcement was back then.
It was a great movie Cody. I cannot say that I liked it as much as you did but I did enjoy it. It took awhile for it to really get going but I loved the performances and the music and the atmosphere. 👍
I love the 1980s, horror movies and serial killer documentaries and true crime stories. I have never heard of this film until you mention it and it sounds fascinating I will definitely watch it! Where can I find it?
It's not a rip off of Stranger Things, just because it has 4 kids hanging out in the 80s. That's like saying it's a Stand By Me rip off, too, etc. It just has an 80s feel, like any real 80s movie.
I'm sorry but I was totally let down by the end.. Without giving the plot away the person who turned out to be the killer.. Up until the end I thought it was a fake out.. And the real killer was someone else who also had means... Cover story.... A van.... Also was always out "working late"... Perfect wolf in sheep's clothing... You know who I mean. That would've been an awesome ending.
Just gotta say Stranger Things did not start the 80’s craze of the 2010’s, that goes to Super 8, Drive & Tron Legacy. Stranger Things was just the main stream boom but that was 5 or 6 years after those other films.
This movie was great...up until the end. Cast, soundtrack and writing were solid, but I can't get over how much that ending sucked. Such a shame, there was no reason for the group to split in half and Woody dying was just too much. Felt like it tried to hard to end on a bad note.
First half: oh this is comedy
Also first half: oh this is actually a thriller
Second half: oh this is horror
Yeah really lol it was good though
The pictures on Mackey's walls, that was brilliant and a bit disturbing. All I'm going to say about it.
David Callaway or when Mackey was looking through the window that was also disturbing
@yo_hello I just finished watching this film for the first time. I agree with you. Needs a sequel. I'm sure Mackey can't stop killing. And I need to see Mackey either caught or killed
This movie is the true definition of a hidden gem
Just got done watching it right now for the second time really good underrated movie
This movie does in fact have a stranger things" Vibe "but is far from it in every aspect, especially the end.
Just saw this after watching first half of review and will never trust my neighbors again
I dont talk to neighbors.............lol
My neighbor is a pedophile and tried to pull something on my 10 year old brother once this movie just made me think about that and it's a lot more terrifying
I almost fucking cried at the end it catched me so off guard, the plot twist and the brutality i was like "nah fuck off you did not"
I thought the fat kid was the killer for most of the movie but no😮
"Fat kid" no sense of speech in that head of yours. @@william3253
I just watched this flick last night and I loved it. That ending, man... If they ever make a sequel I hope make Davey into a Laurie Strode Halloween 2018 type survivor so when Mackey comes back he's not going to have an easy time.
I absolutely loved it! The direction it took at the ending did not expect. I thought it was a brilliant film hands down.
Yeah we reviewed this one back in April during the Phoenix Film Festival. Awesome that it’s getting the attention it deserves finally!
Agreed
I got to ask. As a person who also does reviews and I am working on one for this movie.. Did you at least catch the concept of the movie? They were using clichés to subvert expectations. One of the things I really like is that they don't over-80's the movie. None of my friends parents ever believed us in the 80's over an adult.
I was mad when woody died
Same

This movie was fucking awesome! Just watched it.
*spoilers*
What were his friends doing in the end though? Clearing out wood?
They were taking down the treehouse. Eats mentions early in the movie that his dad wants it taken down.

Very interesting. Yeah i think were conditioned to expect a twist when it's actually a journey for the kids to prove the truth.
Honestly, without the final act being so bleak, this would have been fairly forgettable.
I watched this movie after your recommendation on fave movies of the decade, thank you so much for introducing me to this little gem! It was sooo good and I hard agree about them having the balls to go where they did with this film. Super rewatchable!

Yeah im still obsessing over this movie its so good
I agree!!! Best movie of 2018, LOVE IT.
Now we waiting for Summer Of 86 - Return Of Mackey
Really liked this movie too! Third act was just crazy awesome!
I just now finished watching it. It felt like I was in the adventure. And I really felt for these characters
That threat the killer left to the survivor was awesome. Great way to set up a sequel.
I don't want a sequel that ending was perfect as a close.
I can see that too. A sequel would be kind of pointless. We'll probably get one anyway though.
Or Mackey comes back in the summer of24 the main character has kids with the girl that he was in love with
Yea it needs a sequel for sure, could make this film way better if they do.

Hey Cody and Cody's viewers,
if you liked Summer of 84 go and check last year's Super Dark Times.
Intense flick on a similar teen drama meets thriller tip with some thriller/horror vibes to it at moments.
It's also nostalgic, but maybe not as much as Summer of 84, and it's set in 90's for a change.
A must watch if you enjoyed this one.
Cheers!
Good review Cody! Grazie! Just rewatched this. The perfect movie to watch before seeing The Black Phone!
Just watched this and I was blown away
They showed Mackie was heading a gardening project at the fair which is what all the dirt and chemicals was for. That convinced him he was innocent.
Nice review Cody and I'm still waiting on that Scream 3 review😂😂😂
Well Sir,
Yet again you're review was spot on. I watched the review then the movie. It was a fun bit of nostalgia mixed with pure wicked horror fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for all your reviews.
Sometimes I actually prefer your reviews more tgan the the films LOL
I rewatched this movie again....still brilliant
I just heard about and watched it for the first time. Might be my favorite serial killer movie ever. It’s crazy there’s not more buzz about this movie. The acting was really good, the story was really good. It definitely reminds me of disturbia except this is better done and more intense and enticing. 19 but it’s still nostalgic because I grew up watching movies mostly from 80s and 90s and my early childhood was reminiscent of this movie. 10/5 stars.
As usual Cody an absolutely great review. This movie kept me guessing almost to the end.
Thing is, they captured the 80s regarding lost children. There was no John Walsh to push the issue. It was a very good portrait of pointing out how limited law enforcement was back then.
Finally bought this off Amazon and watched because of you. Absolutely loved it!
Loved disturbia so I bought this movie when I saw you put it number 1 on your 2018 list just came in today, can't wait to watch!!
It was a great movie Cody. I cannot say that I liked it as much as you did but I did enjoy it. It took awhile for it to really get going but I loved the performances and the music and the atmosphere. 👍
I fucking love this movie. Favorite of 2018 also.
Where do you get your tshirts man? Nice review btw, think I’ve watched all your videos like 20 times each
Ript Apparel. And THATS dedication! Lol
Cody Leach it’s becoming an obsession lol keep it up man
I just watched it and i thought it was good. Great review Cody!
I love the 1980s, horror movies and serial killer documentaries and true crime stories. I have never heard of this film until you mention it and it sounds fascinating I will definitely watch it! Where can I find it?
Thumbs up just for this video intro.
Sounds good definitely checking this out. If my video store ever gets it.
This movie also reminded me of the original 1985 Fright Night and the Burbs. In a good way.
Great review not sure whos is better yours or Lee's.
It's not a rip off of Stranger Things, just because it has 4 kids hanging out in the 80s. That's like saying it's a Stand By Me rip off, too, etc. It just has an 80s feel, like any real 80s movie.
I agree but that's all I've heard.
Had to look up this movie since it was your #1 pick. Definitely did not disappoint! Great movie.
Awesome
I loved that they included in the movie the arcade haunted game Polybius! Nice homage :)
Not really, it doesn't make any sense.
Just gotta say Stranger Things did not start the 80’s craze of the 2010’s, that goes to Super 8, Drive & Tron Legacy. Stranger Things was just the main stream boom but that was 5 or 6 years after those other films.
Might check this out but Quick question Cody which Halloween film is your favorite other than the 78 film?
Season of the Witch
This movie was great...up until the end. Cast, soundtrack and writing were solid, but I can't get over how much that ending sucked. Such a shame, there was no reason for the group to split in half and Woody dying was just too much. Felt like it tried to hard to end on a bad note.
Just went and watched this ... Thank you so much
I watch the movie before I watch the video I love the movie it was really good I like to plot and the direction it took
watched it recently and really love it. I still listen to the soundtrack of the movie, its great
