I just send him this video. He is the best KOF player here in Chile. Before XIII, he was focused on 2002 OG. One day we invited to play XIII, he didnt like it at first but we keep practicing. In just 2 months he oblirated everyone in a local tournament. Thanks for this. I have great memories from those days.
Gotta respect it. Just a regular guy who had to save and make sacrifices to travel the world and prove his skill at his game on the world stage. I can see where he achieved what he did, he was likely content to return back to his life in Chile. Not everyone wants to be an FGC competitor/content creator/sponsored person. Some people are in it for the game and want their normal lives.
To add some more flavor to the character: In the early 2000s, back when rhythm games were the hot stuff, Misterio was Chile's best Dance Dance Revolution player and he even had some world records at certain songs/circuits. Despite not being dedicated to competition anymore, he is still pretty damn good 😀. More important than anything, he is a really cool, nice person.

Man, one of my friends knows Misterio (From Chile here) and they are letting him know of this video, really nice job man.
It is so nice to see this story get told! I had the honor of commentating those elusive IGT 2015 finals, and I knew I'd witnessed a huge moment back then. Part of why the matches are so hard to find is that, other than Bili Bili, the tournament was streamed on RUclips and I'd wager the videos are either badly title or completely lost since Cafeid basically became nonexistent after that tournament. Thank you for telling Misterio's story and allowing us to relive the glory days!
IGT 2015 is truly one of the greatest upsets in KoF tournament history. It's tragic that the event was so poorly documented, those who were keeping up with KoF news at the time (myself among them) will know CafeID truly made a miracle in their efforts to showcase talent from across the globe, even at the expense of their own scene. Misterio's success was a huge influence on my own philosophy, even though I only share King with his team... It was just a fact no one could deny, he had the audacity to strike down God himself not once but twice, and in both cases he did so without a single concession to "meta" in the form of any 'top tier' chars on his team. It was no fluke, for that stretch of the year after IGT he had the whole KoF world on blast. It leads me to wonder how the accessibility of both social media in general and rollback in KoFXV's online play has affected the potential for players like Misterio in the future, even compared to the effect modern design philosophy has left on the series. It's arguable that much of what happened sprung from the fact he more or less trained in secret, without online play there was no effective way for Xiaohai (or anyone else without direct access to the local scene for that matter) to keep tabs on his progress or study the character matchups aside from finding local opponents of similar skill who used them. Xiaohai most likely didn't have that kind of outlet on deck at the time, claims of distracted focus toward SFIV be damned.
It's also worth noting his team at the time. There weren't a lot of characters at the time that were considered "competitively viable". Matter of fact, any character below "A-Tier" were NOT considered competitively viable. If you didn't run Mr. Karate and Classic Iori, you weren't taking the game seriously enough. The only variance seemed to be Kim or Chin. Misterio challenged that belief with his team, and I believe he was on to something. Can't wait for rollback! I personally believe there is a LOT more to explore in this game. People cared too much about the "Tiers" in this game ( that's just what the time was like ) and I feel like it prevented it from reaching it's TRUE competitive potential.
That's far from true as Bala proved years before that, if you were good enough, it was possible to win with anyone in your team (he won majors with Clark, Yuri, Takuma, Chin, Duo Lon, King, Benimaru, Billy, K', Kula, Shen Woo, Raiden, Andy, Hwa, Ryo, Joe, Vice, Kim, Modern Iori, etc.). The only character that Mysterio used that nobody else did (at that level) was Athena, though Bala showed years before, as well, that if there was a character in the game that people should be scared of, because her mobility and TODs, was her.
For us Chileans traveling is mostly out of the question when the average value for that its about what most people win in a Year just for a 2 to 3 day trip, its simply just not viable at all. That's why rollback is so important for regions like us, since it allows us to show our skill level to the rest of the world. Hell, even traveling to countries next to us is really expensive since the most viable way to travel its by Plane, unless you want to travel through land, which can take a whole week, its a lot riskier and also makes you really exhausted to perform at 100% most of the times.
I didn't consider the geography in terns of travel but that does make a lot of sense. Thr story of Misterio becomes more and more wild with each new detail I learn
Would be great to see such legends return to majors, though their online sets in KOF XV show that maybe their best years are over. Bala and Misterio were such great players at their time (Bala won every major in the US but EVO), but nowadays they're just that, legends. What's said at the start is a reality, even if some have managed to beat Xiaohai in KOF (NL, Koukou, ET, MadKOF, ViolentKain, ZJZ, M', GXBridget, Hisa, Misterio, etc.), nobody has ever managed to replicate his success and be so dominant in as many games from a series. He is, by far, the best KOF player of all time. The only player close to that dominance in a series is Sonicfox in MK.
Misterio, just like his name, a mystery man. Dominated kof13 in its late years, then just disappeared. I hope it's because he found something more meaningful than FGC in his life.
I always wondered what happened to him. I just figured maybe he wasnt able to compete due to money maybe. I know some people who were super good and high level at fighting games, but then its just their situations at home in terms of finances just wasnt good and not all the fighting game players came from families with money or a stable middle class family I think too.
As someone that just got into traditional fighting games, learning all about the lore of past champions is awesome. Thank you for doing all this research. I can't help but get sad and wonder where Misterio is. We need to find him!
@@qmanchu hmmm interesting. Will we ever know what prompted him to stop travelling for KOF? An exclusive qmanchu x misterio 1 on 1 interview would be clutch
@eudaimonia137 maybe on the future! I asked around some communities and nobody knew how to get a hold of him. To me, from this old interview, it seems that he just couldn't make money playing and even tho he was the best, it didn't matter. It couldn't support him without a sponsor, which they don't have in Chile

this is a weird takeaway from this video but seeing Misterio use King, Yuri, and Athena (and Saiki, if i read one of the screenshots right?) is very interesting to me--i like KOF a LOT and KOF13 is one i'm rediscovering but so many sources are like "the 15 dollar team is the only one anybody ever played" and it's just cool to see three totally out-there characters dominating like that. i know Misterio is the pilot and i'm guessing any character can do work with him at the helm but still, really neat to see
