    Thanks Baskets for sharing Steel's kit. I have watched a number of gear video's of late. I am most impressed by Steel's selection and practiced view. And yes to packing a trowel and packing out TP! Among the best practices I saw that I will shamelessly steal was the multi purpose Tyvek sheet. I have used Tyvek for a ground sheet under a tarp and instead of a footprint for my BA tent. I will also add, the white sheet is a great rescue marker for aerial searches; better than blaze oranges. Backpackers Bistro, heh, check it out.

    Thanks for doing these gear reviews. There was another hiker also interviewing his friends gear and I learn most from these types because it's straight and to the point without endorsements and commissions... amazon money links etc...

      Amazon blows! I only buy books from them, and I don't even like doing that. But on the trail I occaionally got something from them when I could send it to a physical address. They dont play well with USPS as SO MANY hikers found out when their packages got returned or delayed.

      SectionHiking The AT it’s worth it for the quality, the duplex is 600 plus also, only reason I didn’t get one

    • @jasonrepkodotcom
      @jasonrepkodotcom 5 лет назад +1

      SectionHiking The AT Totally! Looking back on the weather, it was mostly driving wind from CO north with crazy random storms along the way...and a lot of sun. One can get by with a less expensive option for sure. A Frogg Togg top just for rain would be fine, but they won’t last when worn regularly. Then have a 1-2 ounce windshell that is your daily top (lots of options out there for that). Certainly the OR Helium 2 is worth a look for less $, but it wets out fast. This Montbell shell is pricey but it’s super light and surprisingly durable and the paclite GTX is the most wp/breathable I’ve ever worn.

    • @SectionHikingTheAT

      Jason Repko Thanks!! I’m discovering gear that may be great for an overnight doesn’t always work on longer hikes. I’ve been a frog togs poncho fan, but will need something more durable soon.

    Thanks Baskets and Steel, great video. Steel mentioned a tarp in New Mexico. Next year I was planning on doing the same thing on the CDT. I flip flop back in forth on bringing a bivy for wind/Dust. I'd rather leave it and the extra weight if I can get by without it.just use ground cloth. Any thoughts?
    And if you read this Steel, Thanks, now I'm back to reconsidering the Duplex over the pleximid. (for Chama Northward)Thanks again Baskets, my friend!

    • @jasonrepkodotcom
      @jasonrepkodotcom 5 лет назад

      Heartsong Howdy... you know, a really light bivy for condensation and bag protection is a great idea. In fact, you could do the entire trail with just a tarp and bivy if you’re comfortable in that set up. I love the Duplex. I really think that ZPacks hit the nail on the head with this particular tent and feel it’s their flagship product for sure. It’s palatial for one person especially when having to hunker down, which you’ll do a lot on the CDT. Have fun! Its awesome.

    • @jasonrepkodotcom
      @jasonrepkodotcom 5 лет назад

      You nailed it! Go tarp from the Mexi border to Chama and have your axe, spikes, and Duplex (perfect!) waiting for you there. Send the tarp ahead to say... Rawlins, WY. But you will probably find by Wyoming the bugs are getting bad, and by Yellowstone - holy hell. Then you never know with weather along the ID/MT border and it's getting colder as you get further into MT. But ID/MT was pretty cozy for me. Have fun!

    Nice gear review! Thanks for the video. On your CDT thru hike what was your average mileage per day when you were hiking? Thanks JT. from Oregon

    • @baskets8429
      @baskets8429  5 лет назад +4

      104 hiking days for the whole CDT due to so many alternate routes, not sure what my total cdt mileage was, with getting lost extra miles and all that I’d say atleast 25 + per day average ( I have 4 40 plus mile days ) bunch of 30 s and a lot of those 20 to 30 milers

    • @jasonrepkodotcom
      @jasonrepkodotcom 5 лет назад +3

      Strictly speaking "...when you were hiking" I was averaging maybe 25-32 miles per day when it was moderate to easy terrain. Occasional mid high 30's, a few days in the teens (sounds like a weather forecast, eh?) when dilly dallying. If we're simply talking the math: 3000 miles / 130 days = 23 miles per day. That's start to finish, all included...

    12 pounds seems heavy for the equipment you are carrying. Do you have a lighter pack so I can see the weight breakdown.

    • @jasonrepkodotcom
      @jasonrepkodotcom 5 лет назад +3

      That weight is not including a few items I showed here. Maybe the food, electrolytes, a few personal items. I use the poles, they don't stay on my pack. Add a pound and call it good. I don't get too hung upon the weight. Along the way you add, subtract, send stuff home, leave stuff for others... All good.

    • @baskets8429

    • @Tier1Citizen
      @Tier1Citizen 5 лет назад +1

      That's what I was wondering. Bleach by itself has a really weird sharp lemon flavor to it so I was wondering if it would lend that similar metallic taste to the water. Sawyer water filter it is :-)

      You talking the stuff I drink, or the kind I light on fire? Ha! I carried a 0.5 L platypus soft bottle. I would by a bottle of Heet (the yellow) from any gas station for $3! It's fuel line antifreeze. Available everywhere, litterally. That would fill up the fuel bottle and that would last 12-15 days depending on how much coffee and hot coco I cranked out and weather temps.
