Ok... I got to be honest here. So Boss has been building houses longer than probably any viewer here. He has showed some of his carpentry work on a episode and absolutely amazing. We live in Central Montana and we know about cold! Last February the average daily temp was about 0.5 degrees. We live in a mobile home that is skirted, but had no insulation. We would have all of the base cabinet doors open at night and let the water trickle just to make sure it didn't freeze. It was so cold, we were having frost heaves under the house. You could hear the house creaking and groaning. This past summer, we decided to try the foil-faced bubblewrap. We placed it on the inside of the studs that the skirting attaches to, in a continuous run to keep seams to a minimum. It runs from the bottom of the house down to the ground. The first cold spell we had this year, the outside temperature was -14. I opened the access panel and took a temperature measurement about 6 feet inside and the thermometer registered 36 degrees. When I opened the access, I could feel the warm air coming out! So far, we've had temps in the range of 0 to -20. No open cabinets, no trickling water and my heat tape (which is thermostatically controlled) has barely run. It works!
I used it on my shooting house for deer hunting ! The flooring is 1/4 round decking boards and there are spaces between each board ! So bubble foil stops the air flow and insulates the door ! Thank you Boss !😅

I have a cabin on Amos Run Hunt club in cowen west virginia and will be doing this to my cabin..the roof and walls are fully insulated but the floor is like ice!
Was wondering if you can use the bubble foil insulation on the inside of the cabin floor, like under my flooring? Or would that just flatten out the bubble wrap and defeat the insulative property? I only ask as my shed to cabin did not come with an insulated floor and it is just sitting on skids over a gravel base. I am located in northern WI (Mercer, in the snowbelt of Lake Superior and lots of nights below zero).Ideally my cabin needs to be raised (have any suggestions on how to do that??) and put in the proper insulation. I was thinking about spray foam or the 2" pink board, but after watching your videos, I know to shy away from either product due to the problems with ant infestation. The last two winters I have had success using straw bales around the base of the cabin in combination with the 2" pink board which I cut to 2 ft wide sections and put between the exterior cabin wall base and the straw bales. R value works out to be around R-25 to R-35 for the cabin base. It helps quite a bit but I still feel a draft on the floor. Even at that it is easy to maintain a temp of 70F. In Spring I use my straw bales for my straw bale garden. I did my walls and ceiling with rock wool insulation which works great. My roof has a ridge vent (which I have left open). I heat with a natural gas Jotul stove, direct-vented out the wall and have no moisture problems in the cabin. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. After showing him your video about a year or so ago , his reply was its great had no rodents and the floor was warmer, and several others on the park had done the same. So what else can I say except stay safe look after yourselves and give the Kids a pet from me 😊
I've lived in a remote area of the Southern Californian Mojave Desert for the past 44 years. The cold (which I've always hated), is not a problem. However, fire ants, and rodents of all sizes and types, plus July, August, and September heat of 110 degrees F. daily are. Your video blog is fascinating, and even though I'm now 82 and my heavy construction days have passed, your explanation and demonstration of the use of bubble wrap has me thinking that if bubble wrap works to block the cold, it may also work to block out the heat... Thank you for your video, and I consistently thank RUclips for the priceless content shown on it.

I find them more entertaining than annoying. Frozen ground there / soft ground here, one layer of foil between the two but they say it doesn't work. You gotta love it brother :-D
@@noroads1427 I finally talked my friend into doing this under his floor. he has a full basement beneath but his house was always cold. He uses HALF the firewood now and floors are warm. I spent a lot of time in the Homer area in the mid 80's. You live in some beautiful country.
Bubble foil works 100 percent on my brick walls in my basement i covered the cold brick the wall and the room is so much warmer try it dont dought something you havent tryed reflectix is the best thing. Jc ever reccommend thank you so much for the idea
I used it in my outhouse floor and it definitely works. I made the mistake of not doing it in my cabin floor which was built before the outhouse and I wish I had. But, because of how well it worked in my outhouse floor, I ended up deciding to use it in my cabin ceiling. It's a gable roof but I created a small attic space by putting up 2x4s from one side to the other, horizontal with the floor. Then I just stapled the bubble foil to the joists and then outside the cabin I have soffit vents along the overhang. In the small attic space I have 2 exhaust vents on the peak of the roof to allow the ceiling to breathe. The venting is important to pull the moisture out of the cabin in the summer and prevent ice dams in the winter. After only adding the bubble foil alone, the temperature inside my cabin in the morning on a cold winter night only gets down to the high 50s at worst. Before the bubble foil where I only had the plywood and shingles, the cabin would end up in the 40s or below when I woke up unless I tended the fire at 3:00-4:00 AM. My thermometer doesn't have an agenda and didn't lie to me. Hahaha. They can say whatever they want, I am also very happy with it.
I followed the advice you gave about using it in a cooler. I put it in a large 72? Qt cooler. Lined the whole inside and made a removable piece that goes over the top of the food and ice. It went from maybe a day and half to 3 even 4 days of holding ice! Who needs a several hundred dollar cooler, when you can buy a roll of this stuff and have similar results with a cheap cooler. My Amish neighbour's use the bubble foil. I'm also using it. If anyone doesn't like it, don't use it. It works for me. As they say," you can lead a horse to water", well you know the rest.

I have had to learn from others young and old to walk My path through life . The wife and I work as a team on all our projects . We have had a farm with all the animals and now been off grid for 16 years . We have taken Lots of pics over the years , do to co-workers and friends not believing what we are capable of. Have invited all of them over the years to come out and visit or camp . All no shows ! We have 27 acres in the Pacific northwest , all timber, year around creek , beaver pond. 3 1/2 miles behind a timber company gate. They can keep their city life and energy bills, higher property taxes and crime. Keep up the good work , we will keep watching and learning ! !
I worked in the weatherization program for the govt. What he's saying about the way he's "reflecting the heat" truely works. I've seen it first hand by some ingenuous people that had little funds and even less experience in building products. I was amazed how well it works, but the stuff really proved itself.
There is no frost under the house because the heat leaving the cabin floor is keeping the frost out. If the building was unheated the frost would be in the ground under the cabin. And he says that in the video.

This stuff is the greatest! I have been using it everywhere for about three years. I figure the reason it works so well is that it acts as a draft barrier as well as a small amount of insulation. The wind can't penetrate it and take the heat with it. Like a space blanket.

@@snowflakemelter1172 There are times when a term (insulation) is used to describe something and subsequent testing shows that "air infiltration barrier" would more accurately be the descriptor. I suggest trying it, see the results and THEN comment. When someone comments from the point of view of "insulation" when the actual benefit is preventing "conditioned air loss" the comment can be true but off base. I would rather see comments trying to help the youtuber explain what they observed. Let's see the naysayers do what he did and see what results they get... I'm prepping to do this under mom's mobile home to reduce her "conditioned air" loss and reduce her electric bill. True, it would be cheaper to staple up thick plastic to prevent air flow, but I like that it has a little R-value and will last longer.
I live in a 3 bedroom ranch in the city. I use the Reflectix bubble wrap in all the windows in the summer, to reflect the sun and some of the heat back outwards. It helps just enough so that my AC doesn't have to work so hard. I also use it in the basement, putting it above the heating ductwork to reflect heat in the winter and AC in the summer. After seeing this video, the first I have watched on your channel, I may use it on the upper basement walls(monolithic concrete) that are not under ground. I am now a new subscriber.
We are in Michigan and hubby and I used it on a lake cottage renovation both for over our cement slab and our wooden porch floor that is cantilevered over an open crawl space. There are carpenter ant nests outside of the wall so good to know about them and the foam board! No problems with this and the mini split we use for heat has been very economical.

James...In keeping with your "back woods logic", I recently installed a 50 cfm fan that grabs hot air from the peak of my cathedral ceiling and pumps it thru a hollow beam down into my 4 ft crawl space when the thermostat down there falls below 60 degrees. Works 'fan'tastic and doesn't cost me 'chit' to run. I'm also one of those "think outside the box" persons, but your examples have really pushed me beyond my prior limits. I suppose my highest compliment would be when I think, how would "The Boss" solve this"? You are a HUGE inspiration to Many of us, And God Bless....~Eli.

I TRUST ya Boss. I can't believe you are STILL having to 'justify' the use of this 'foil'. I 'scored' a HUGE truckload of it thru a tenant/hoarder from a local mfgr that was cleaning up their yard of 'seconds'. We used some to insulate the crawl space under a 'shack' we hauled in 2 years ago. 'Naysayers' be damned, the cost of heating that shack, (so far), this Winter has been less than HALF! AND, Zero rodent problems. I'M a 'believer'. Take THAT 'haters'.

I am broken record when I say I don't have the time to farm, work part time off the farm and have a personal life AND produce You Tube videos! Just our farm is 24/7 for my husband and his brother. We use bubblewrap inside our pop top camper which has canvas sides. With the bubblewrap it has helped tremendously with keeping the cabin warm inside. Great stuff!
Yet another video worth rewatching. I showed this video to my old man when you 1st put it out and he really liked how you put the aluminum truck tool box partly into the ground. He used to be a driver-salesman for Falstaff brewing in the 70's and then for an A-B beer wholesaler so he noticed you had cold beer in the toolbox.

Great video Boss . You sold me on bubble foil on your first video building the extension to the New York cabin . Some people don't understand how to use it . Once the foil is down and the flooring is installed on top you must cover the floor with a plastic tarp until the building is enclosed . This keeps the rain water from going in between the foil and the flooring . I guess you could caulk the seams but why not protect the flooring . That tarp must be kept in good condition until the building is enclosed .That's when you can cut the tarp out . Gorilla tape is good for that if you get small holes or tears in the plastic .. Some people don't like walking on a tarp while building . That's their problem . The small amount of heat loose through the floor because of the way you installed the foil is a blessing for you . Nothing freezes in the crawl space . Great idea in partial burying that aluminum box for food storage .
Unfortunately, too many people are stuck in their ways. Old dogs.. new tricks. The foil would create a great air barrier. How many times do people need to see that it works?

We are building our small cabin in upper Michigan and we will be using the bubble foil. with all your experience you have over the years I would be a fool not to use this product. Thank you for sharing your story with all of us.
Jenn and I also used your technique with the bubble foil. Its even in one of my build videos and I mention you. lol But a warning to the builders. I am building by myself so it took some time to get it all buttoned up. We had a bad rain storm and my sub floor did get wet because the wind ripped my tarp. The water got trapped between the bubble foil and the sub floor. So I had to go under and punch holes into the bubble foil to drain the water. After I drained it I had to go around and tape up the holes. But I am a few steps away from finishing up the cabin. So next year I will hopefully get great results like you! Before I fire up my calculator and try to slam the method used here... Facts are: 1. the floor is warmer, 2. the crawl space is above freezing, 3. The mice and insects are kept at bay 4. I love bubble wrap/reflectics as I said in my text in one of your past videos I live in a cargo van, I have board insulation and The bubble wrap. Other van dwellers I know are having a hard time warming and keeping the warmth in their van homes. It is cold in their vehicles because they only have the basic installation. They cannot keep their vehicles warm Because it’s like the air just flows through every single crack there is. In my van I have fiberglass in all the large holes between the inside and outside walls, insulation board on walls and ceiling then bubble wrap over all that and on the floor then the paneling. I think what people can’t wrap their heads around is it is not an R value. What they don’t understand is it is more of a windbreak, therefore things stay much warmer. That may be a better way for the negative Nancy’s to grasp the concept.insulation but I would consider it a huge windbreak. If used correctly bubble wrap is worth its weight in warmth. Don’t stress the inboxers their just stuck in the box. Excellent video as always and those apples and oranges looked so good. Great idea for the toolbox. That one I will remember.
I rebuilt a 1973 GMC motor home back in 97. The coach floor is much closer to the road than other motor homes. Heat transfer from the hot summer pavement is a real problem. We put a layer of bubble foil down first then carpet pad and carpet. Big improvement. Added bonus was the sound reduction as well. I love the stuff!!
Heck yeah Boss you’re spot on. Before I started watching you a few years back I built a nice little coyote shooting shack and insulated with free foam board I scored. Sure enough the ants had a field day with it. Bubble foil is just good backwoods logic. Ha. You guys are the best. TJ

I have watched all the 'bubble foil' videos you've made and am a believer! We live for part of the winter in our cabin in the Yukon. It is an old log cabin that has very little clearance under the original floor. We plan to eventually remove the old floor and put in a new one that will level things out inside. This will be such great information for then. We also added an addition on the cabin for a kitchen that has about 2 feet of space under it. I spend much of the winter cooking with frozen feet! There is a woodstove in the kitchen that keeps the upper part of the room warm enough. But, OMGee...the floor freezes! We are dealing with -10 to -40C temperatures. My water buckets freeze if I leave them on the floor and my waste water from the sink bucket is an ice cube. I am so excited to try this out! Thank you so much for this information!
Jim is absolutely correct. This product is a radiant heat reflective insulation product. 1 layer on the floor, 2 on the walls, 3 layers on the ceiling. When putting multiple layers, include a half inch dead air gap between the layers. Also use a quality aluminum tape recommended for on the seems. To keep a small cabin warm, you may only need 1, 2, or 3 candles before it gets too warm. This is a radiant reflective insulation, so you need a low and slow approach only to be comfortably warm. You can also cut and form it over the the hinge part of the door where it swings open. You can also create a long tube or v flashing where your door can seel the jam on the bottom, handle, and top side. Great video Jim, I love your passion.

Back in the 1990's We lived in a 19 foot RV to follow his work. I tried the foam board inside my vinyl skirting and wow! It was a mess with the ant's. The only other thing I could find was the roll of bubble wrap. We used it in all the inside cubbies and on windows inside the RV. I was surprised and happy it worked so well. My inside pipes no longer froze. (Still had to use electric wrap on water pipes and hoses on the outside). It was also easier to heat the inside of the RV with a small oil filled electric heater. (The RV heater used too much propane and ran out too fast). This was long before I found your channel and watch your excellent videos. Keep up your great work!
We have a walk-in unfinished basement with our cabin. It was vacant for several years. We tore out the insulation because the mice made nests in there. We are thinking about insulation under the main floor but have done nothing yet except plug up every hole that led to the main level. I think we will try the bubble wrap as you suggest under the floor above the basement and in the short walls of the basement too and see how it does. It's a vacation cabin but we go there several times a year in all seasons, including winter. Thanks for reminding about the bubble wrap! Those citrus fruits look good!

It totally makes since that it works so well to me. I've done a lot of minimalist backpacking and the sleeping pad I used was basically a blow up version of that. the air in the bubbles helps but it's really the reflective property that in my opinion makes it work so well that it seem unbelievable. Think about emergency blankets - they are just foil with no air and they'll keep you warm enough although they may not be really cozy and comfortable.
Used this stuff in the engine room of my canal boat between the steel hull and the 6mm ply that covers it. Made a heck of a difference. Bearing in mind I am basically a steel box surrounded by water. In other places I packed the gunnel space with 50mm foil backed insulation. I have to replace some rotten flooring and plan to put some underneath. Incidentally, I built the insulated cool box you inspired me to. Holes at the bottom draw cold air from floor level (I plan to drill a hole to the bilge where it's REALLY cold!) and holes at the top rear to let the warm air out. I bought a marble tile for the bottom and so far it keeps everything much better than before. UHT milk lasts twice as long as it used to just in an ordinary cupboard! Getting a computer fan to see if I can improve it any. Cupboard is 18mm ply (scrap I got given) and 25mm expanded polystyrene on three sides. Cheap, cheerful and it works!

My wife and I recently installed an outside wood boiler here in PA where we live completely off the grid. Not wanting to spend the relatively large amount it would cost to buy the typical underground insulated piping.. We got 3'' un-corrugated drain pipe and a few rolls of bubble foil. We used the bubble foil to wrap the feed and return PEX lines one wrap, fed it into the 3'' pipe and buried it below frost. I must admit I was slightly concerned it would be a waste of time and cause more work, but There is absolutely no temperature loss from the boiler to the inside of the house. We also used it as insulation/a heat transfer material for our PEX floor heating system with again awesome results saving us big compared to buying the industry standard of using heat transfer plates. It can be hard to step out-side the norm when everything around us is brain washing us to use or do something a certain way through advertising... stepping outside the box once in a while in life, one just might be amazed to find there is more than one way to skin a cat. Keep up the good work, really enjoy the content.
After hearing about it from the Boss, I used reflectix in a sauna I built. I used it between the joists and sub floor, insulated the walls with fiberglass, and used reflectix between the studs and interior boards as the radiant shell. It works like a charm. Man am I not sorry I built that thing! Thanks Boss reflectix is great stuff, just like your videos!
@@gregi5850 I used only reflectix directly under the subfloor. It works great, I but I’m in South Texas. The packaging shows an installation method in which you leave an air gap between the reflectix and the subfloor, so between the joists instead of on top of them. If I lived where it was colder I might have insulated the floor with the same material and left an air gap for more r value, but it seemed unnecessary where I live. R value reflects the ability of a material to resist conductive heat transfer. Heat is also lost through radiation and convection. To properly assess the insulating ability of different materials, all three types of heat loss must be considered. One of the greatest benefits of the reflective foil wrap in this application, is it's impermeability to water. Water destroys the insulating properties of fiberglass and foam in a very short time, leading to eventual structural failure of the dwelling.

We live in Central Montana and we know about cold! Last February the average daily temp was about 0.5 degrees. We live in a mobile home that is skirted, but had no insulation. We would have all of the base cabinet doors open at night and let the water trickle just to make sure it didn't freeze. It was so cold, we were having frost heaves under the house. You could hear the house creaking and groaning. This past summer, we decided to try the foil-faced bubblewrap. We placed it on the inside of the studs that the skirting attaches to, in a continuous run to keep seams to a minimum. It runs from the bottom of the house down to the ground. The first cold spell we had this year, the outside temperature was -14. I opened the access panel and took a temperature measurement about 6 feet inside and the thermometer registered 36 degrees. When I opened the access, I could feel the warm air coming out! So far, we've had temps in the range of 0 to -20. No open cabinets, no trickling water and my heat tape (which is thermostatically controlled) has barely run. It works!
I used it on my shooting house for deer hunting ! The flooring is 1/4 round decking boards and there are spaces between each board ! So bubble foil stops the air flow and insulates the door ! Thank you Boss !😅

I have a cabin on Amos Run Hunt club in cowen west virginia and will be doing this to my cabin..the roof and walls are fully insulated but the floor is like ice!
Was wondering if you can use the bubble foil insulation on the inside of the cabin floor, like under my flooring? Or would that just flatten out the bubble wrap and defeat the insulative property? I only ask as my shed to cabin did not come with an insulated floor and it is just sitting on skids over a gravel base. I am located in northern WI (Mercer, in the snowbelt of Lake Superior and lots of nights below zero).Ideally my cabin needs to be raised (have any suggestions on how to do that??) and put in the proper insulation. I was thinking about spray foam or the 2" pink board, but after watching your videos, I know to shy away from either product due to the problems with ant infestation. The last two winters I have had success using straw bales around the base of the cabin in combination with the 2" pink board which I cut to 2 ft wide sections and put between the exterior cabin wall base and the straw bales. R value works out to be around R-25 to R-35 for the cabin base. It helps quite a bit but I still feel a draft on the floor. Even at that it is easy to maintain a temp of 70F. In Spring I use my straw bales for my straw bale garden. I did my walls and ceiling with rock wool insulation which works great. My roof has a ridge vent (which I have left open). I heat with a natural gas Jotul stove, direct-vented out the wall and have no moisture problems in the cabin.

After showing him your video about a year or so ago , his reply was its great had no rodents and the floor was warmer, and several others on the park had done the same. I've lived in a remote area of the Southern Californian Mojave Desert for the past 44 years. The cold (which I've always hated), is not a problem. However, fire ants, and rodents of all sizes and types, plus July, August, and September heat of 110 degrees F. daily are. Your video blog is fascinating, and even though I'm now 82 and my heavy construction days have passed, your explanation and demonstration of the use of bubble wrap has me thinking that if bubble wrap works to block the cold, it may also work to block out the heat... Thank you for your video, and I consistently thank RUclips for the priceless content shown on it.

I find them more entertaining than annoying. Frozen ground there / soft ground here, one layer of foil between the two but they say it doesn't work. You gotta love it brother :-D

Bubble foil works 100 percent on my brick walls in my basement i covered the cold brick the wall and the room is so much warmer try it dont dought something you havent tryed reflectix is the best thing. Jc ever reccommend thank you so much for the idea
I used it in my outhouse floor and it definitely works. I made the mistake of not doing it in my cabin floor which was built before the outhouse and I wish I had. But, because of how well it worked in my outhouse floor, I ended up deciding to use it in my cabin ceiling. It's a gable roof but I created a small attic space by putting up 2x4s from one side to the other, horizontal with the floor. Then I just stapled the bubble foil to the joists and then outside the cabin I have soffit vents along the overhang. In the small attic space I have 2 exhaust vents on the peak of the roof to allow the ceiling to breathe. The venting is important to pull the moisture out of the cabin in the summer and prevent ice dams in the winter. After only adding the bubble foil alone, the temperature inside my cabin in the morning on a cold winter night only gets down to the high 50s at worst. Before the bubble foil where I only had the plywood and shingles, the cabin would end up in the 40s or below when I woke up unless I tended the fire at 3:00-4:00 AM. My thermometer doesn't have an agenda and didn't lie to me. Hahaha. They can say whatever they want, I am also very happy with it.
I followed the advice you gave about using it in a cooler. I put it in a large 72? Qt cooler. Lined the whole inside and made a removable piece that goes over the top of the food and ice. It went from maybe a day and half to 3 even 4 days of holding ice! Who needs a several hundred dollar cooler, when you can buy a roll of this stuff and have similar results with a cheap cooler. Thanks as always for the great advice!

My Amish neighbour's use the bubble foil. I'm also using it. If anyone doesn't like it, don't use it. It works for me. As they say," you can lead a horse to water", well you know the rest.

You are doing a great job on your channel ! Your experience and hands on work is a pleasure to watch and learn from ! My father passed when I was 21 . That was 40 years ago. I have had to learn from others young and old to walk My path through life . The wife and I work as a team on all our projects . We have had a farm with all the animals and now been off grid for 16 years . We have taken Lots of pics over the years , do to co-workers and friends not believing what we are capable of. Have invited all of them over the years to come out and visit or camp . All no shows ! We have 27 acres in the Pacific northwest , all timber, year around creek , beaver pond. 3 1/2 miles behind a timber company gate. They can keep their city life and energy bills, higher property taxes and crime. Keep up the good work , we will keep watching and learning ! !

I worked in the weatherization program for the govt. What he's saying about the way he's "reflecting the heat" truely works. I've seen it first hand by some ingenuous people that had little funds and even less experience in building products. I was amazed how well it works, but the stuff really proved itself.
There is no frost under the house because the heat leaving the cabin floor is keeping the frost out. If the building was unheated the frost would be in the ground under the cabin. And he says that in the video.

This stuff is the greatest! I have been using it everywhere for about three years. I figure the reason it works so well is that it acts as a draft barrier as well as a small amount of insulation. The wind can't penetrate it and take the heat with it. Like a space blanket.

I suggest trying it, see the results and THEN comment. When someone comments from the point of view of "insulation" when the actual benefit is preventing "conditioned air loss" the comment can be true but off base. I would rather see comments trying to help the youtuber explain what they observed.

I'm prepping to do this under mom's mobile home to reduce her "conditioned air" loss and reduce her electric bill. True, it would be cheaper to staple up thick plastic to prevent air flow, but I like that it has a little R-value and will last longer.
I live in a 3 bedroom ranch in the city. I use the Reflectix bubble wrap in all the windows in the summer, to reflect the sun and some of the heat back outwards. It helps just enough so that my AC doesn't have to work so hard. I also use it in the basement, putting it above the heating ductwork to reflect heat in the winter and AC in the summer. After seeing this video, the first I have watched on your channel, I may use it on the upper basement walls(monolithic concrete) that are not under ground. I am now a new subscriber.
We are in Michigan and hubby and I used it on a lake cottage renovation both for over our cement slab and our wooden porch floor that is cantilevered over an open crawl space. There are carpenter ant nests outside of the wall so good to know about them and the foam board! No problems with this and the mini split we use for heat has been very economical.

James...In keeping with your "back woods logic", I recently installed a 50 cfm fan that grabs hot air from the peak of my cathedral ceiling and pumps it thru a hollow beam down into my 4 ft crawl space when the thermostat down there falls below 60 degrees. Works 'fan'tastic and doesn't cost me 'chit' to run. I'm also one of those "think outside the box" persons, but your examples have really pushed me beyond my prior limits. I suppose my highest compliment would be when I think, how would "The Boss" solve this"? You are a HUGE inspiration to Many of us, And God Bless....~Eli.

I TRUST ya Boss. I can't believe you are STILL having to 'justify' the use of this 'foil'. I 'scored' a HUGE truckload of it thru a tenant/hoarder from a local mfgr that was cleaning up their yard of 'seconds'. We used some to insulate the crawl space under a 'shack' we hauled in 2 years ago. 'Naysayers' be damned, the cost of heating that shack, (so far), this Winter has been less than HALF! AND, Zero rodent problems. I'M a 'believer'. Take THAT 'haters'.

I am broken record when I say I don't have the time to farm, work part time off the farm and have a personal life AND produce You Tube videos! Just our farm is 24/7 for my husband and his brother. I run around and take up the slack. Thank you, my friend, for all the sharing you do along the way. I will suggest the bubble foil route to my sister who just purchased an older mobile home that needs insulation underneath. We use bubblewrap inside our pop top camper which has canvas sides. With the bubblewrap it has helped tremendously with keeping the cabin warm inside. Great stuff!
Yet another video worth rewatching. I showed this video to my old man when you 1st put it out and he really liked how you put the aluminum truck tool box partly into the ground. He used to be a driver-salesman for Falstaff brewing in the 70's and then for an A-B beer wholesaler so he noticed you had cold beer in the toolbox.

Great video Boss . You sold me on bubble foil on your first video building the extension to the New York cabin . Some people don't understand how to use it . Once the foil is down and the flooring is installed on top you must cover the floor with a plastic tarp until the building is enclosed . This keeps the rain water from going in between the foil and the flooring . I guess you could caulk the seams but why not protect the flooring . That tarp must be kept in good condition until the building is enclosed .That's when you can cut the tarp out . Gorilla tape is good for that if you get small holes or tears in the plastic .. Some people don't like walking on a tarp while building . That's their problem . The small amount of heat loose through the floor because of the way you installed the foil is a blessing for you . Nothing freezes in the crawl space . Great idea in partial burying that aluminum box for food storage .

I am building by myself so it took some time to get it all buttoned up. We had a bad rain storm and my sub floor did get wet because the wind ripped my tarp. The water got trapped between the bubble foil and the sub floor. So I had to go under and punch holes into the bubble foil to drain the water. After I drained it I had to go around and tape up the holes. But I am a few steps away from finishing up the cabin. So next year I will hopefully get great results like you! If water gets trapped, just slit it and let the water drain out. Staple and tape it back when the floor is dry. Good as new.
Before I fire up my calculator and try to slam the method used here... Facts are: 1. the floor is warmer, 2. the crawl space is above freezing, 3. The mice and insects are kept at bay 4. Massive beer fridge! .... Seems like a win x4 to me! This was super helpful for me and thank you for sharing your experiences! Keep it up!

I love bubble wrap/reflectics as I said in my text in one of your past videos I live in a cargo van, I have board insulation and The bubble wrap. Other van dwellers I know are having a hard time warming and keeping the warmth in their van homes. It is cold in their vehicles because they only have the basic installation. They cannot keep their vehicles warm Because it’s like the air just flows through every single crack there is. In my van I have fiberglass in all the large holes between the inside and outside walls, insulation board on walls and ceiling then bubble wrap over all that and on the floor then the paneling. I think what people can’t wrap their heads around is it is not an R value. What they don’t understand is it is more of a windbreak, therefore things stay much warmer. That may be a better way for the negative Nancy’s to grasp the concept.insulation but I would consider it a huge windbreak. If used correctly bubble wrap is worth its weight in warmth. Don’t stress the inboxers their just stuck in the box. Excellent video as always and those apples and oranges looked so good. Great idea for the toolbox. That one I will remember.
Insulation board is supposed to be fitted properly with filled and taped seams in the first place.
I rebuilt a 1973 GMC motor home back in 97. The coach floor is much closer to the road than other motor homes. Heat transfer from the hot summer pavement is a real problem. We put a layer of bubble foil down first then carpet pad and carpet. Big improvement. Added bonus was the sound reduction as well. I love the stuff!!
Heck yeah Boss you’re spot on. Before I started watching you a few years back I built a nice little coyote shooting shack and insulated with free foam board I scored. Sure enough the ants had a field day with it. Bubble foil is just good backwoods logic. Ha.

I have watched all the 'bubble foil' videos you've made and am a believer! We live for part of the winter in our cabin in the Yukon. It is an old log cabin that has very little clearance under the original floor. We plan to eventually remove the old floor and put in a new one that will level things out inside. This will be such great information for then. We also added an addition on the cabin for a kitchen that has about 2 feet of space under it. I spend much of the winter cooking with frozen feet! There is a woodstove in the kitchen that keeps the upper part of the room warm enough. But, OMGee...the floor freezes! We are dealing with -10 to -40C temperatures. My water buckets freeze if I leave them on the floor and my waste water from the sink bucket is an ice cube. I am so excited to try this out! Thank you so much for this information!
You won't be disappointed. This stuff works awesome.
Jim is absolutely correct. This product is a radiant heat reflective insulation product. 1 layer on the floor, 2 on the walls, 3 layers on the ceiling. When putting multiple layers, include a half inch dead air gap between the layers. Also use a quality aluminum tape recommended for on the seems. To keep a small cabin warm, you may only need 1, 2, or 3 candles before it gets too warm. This is a radiant reflective insulation, so you need a low and slow approach only to be comfortably warm.
You can also cut and form it over the the hinge part of the door where it swings open. You can also create a long tube or v flashing where your door can seel the jam on the bottom, handle, and top side.

Back in the 1990's We lived in a 19 foot RV to follow his work. I tried the foam board inside my vinyl skirting and wow! It was a mess with the ant's. The only other thing I could find was the roll of bubble wrap. We used it in all the inside cubbies and on windows inside the RV. I was surprised and happy it worked so well. My inside pipes no longer froze. (Still had to use electric wrap on water pipes and hoses on the outside). It was also easier to heat the inside of the RV with a small oil filled electric heater. (The RV heater used too much propane and ran out too fast).
This was long before I found your channel and watch your excellent videos. Keep up your great work!
We have a walk-in unfinished basement with our cabin. It was vacant for several years. We tore out the insulation because the mice made nests in there. We are thinking about insulation under the main floor but have done nothing yet except plug up every hole that led to the main level. I think we will try the bubble wrap as you suggest under the floor above the basement and in the short walls of the basement too and see how it does. It's a vacation cabin but we go there several times a year in all seasons, including winter. Thanks for reminding about the bubble wrap! Those citrus fruits look good!

It totally makes since that it works so well to me. I've done a lot of minimalist backpacking and the sleeping pad I used was basically a blow up version of that. the air in the bubbles helps but it's really the reflective property that in my opinion makes it work so well that it seem unbelievable. Think about emergency blankets - they are just foil with no air and they'll keep you warm enough although they may not be really cozy and comfortable.

Used this stuff in the engine room of my canal boat between the steel hull and the 6mm ply that covers it. Made a heck of a difference.
Bearing in mind I am basically a steel box surrounded by water. In other places I packed the gunnel space with 50mm foil backed insulation. I have to replace some rotten flooring and plan to put some underneath.
Incidentally, I built the insulated cool box you inspired me to. Holes at the bottom draw cold air from floor level (I plan to drill a hole to the bilge where it's REALLY cold!) and holes at the top rear to let the warm air out. I bought a marble tile for the bottom and so far it keeps everything much better than before. UHT milk lasts twice as long as it used to just in an ordinary cupboard! Getting a computer fan to see if I can improve it any. Cupboard is 18mm ply (scrap I got given) and 25mm expanded polystyrene on three sides. Cheap, cheerful and it works!

My wife and I recently installed an outside wood boiler here in PA where we live completely off the grid. Not wanting to spend the relatively large amount it would cost to buy the typical underground insulated piping.. We got 3'' un-corrugated drain pipe and a few rolls of bubble foil. We used the bubble foil to wrap the feed and return PEX lines one wrap, fed it into the 3'' pipe and buried it below frost. I must admit I was slightly concerned it would be a waste of time and cause more work, but There is absolutely no temperature loss from the boiler to the inside of the house. We also used it as insulation/a heat transfer material for our PEX floor heating system with again awesome results saving us big compared to buying the industry standard of using heat transfer plates. It can be hard to step out-side the norm when everything around us is brain washing us to use or do something a certain way through advertising... stepping outside the box once in a while in life, one just might be amazed to find there is more than one way to skin a cat. Keep up the good work, really enjoy the content.
After hearing about it from the Boss, I used reflectix in a sauna I built. I used it between the joists and sub floor, insulated the walls with fiberglass, and used reflectix between the studs and interior boards as the radiant shell. It works like a charm. Man am I not sorry I built that thing! Thanks Boss reflectix is great stuff, just like your videos!

@@gregi5850 I used only reflectix directly under the subfloor. It works great, I but I’m in South Texas. The packaging shows an installation method in which you leave an air gap between the reflectix and the subfloor, so between the joists instead of on top of them. If I lived where it was colder I might have insulated the floor with the same material and left an air gap for more r value, but it seemed unnecessary where I live. R value reflects the ability of a material to resist conductive heat transfer. Heat is also lost through radiation and convection. To properly assess the insulating ability of different materials, all three types of heat loss must be considered. One of the greatest benefits of the reflective foil wrap in this application, is it's impermeability to water. Water destroys the insulating properties of fiberglass and foam in a very short time, leading to eventual structural failure of the dwelling.
Yes boss, I've used it many times and love it. And I will continue to use it. Used 2 inch foam board on a well house , and every year I have to use your trick to get rid of ants. They love that stuff . You and lori have a great weekend, enjoy.
