Learning etymology is always great fun!
As for potatoes... In French they are called "pommes de terre", which means "apples of the earth/soil" but colloquially, they are called "patates" ;)
Great video and the subtitles make it super easy to follow. A minor note but in England we call Suikerspin "Candy Floss", I think the Australians call it "Fairy Floss"? It is the Americans who call it Cotton Candy. The French call it Barbe a Papa!

Hi Kim the only word i understood was aardapple (potatoe) and we use patat for sweet potatoe in Afrikaans, for fries we usually say skyfies or ardapple skyfies, this was another interesting episode :)

In french, for Suikerspin we say "Barbe à papa", which makes no sens as well because it's literally means the "beard of daddy"... But I really like the explanation of this new word "Suikerspin"!

In Brazilian Portuguese, we call it "algodão doce", meaning "sweet cotton".

Ik heb in de jaren 60 een paar jaar in Suriname gewoond. De "pindakaas" in Suriname is inderdaad een blok waar je sneetjes van af snijdt. Dat blok lijkt als twee druppels water op pindakaas waarvan de olie naar boven is komen drijven en dan veel harder wordt. Ik denk dus dat het niets anders is dan pindakaas met minder olie. Wij kinderen gingen naar Omu Snees (oom chinees) op elke staat hoek en kochten een puntje (broodje ) met wan cencie boter en toe cencie pindakaas (broodje met één cent boter en twee cent pindakaas) De pindakaas was
in plakjes gesneden door Omu Snees him self
🎵ze was heel mooi, ja dat is waar..🎵
Maar het mooiste was...

Ik vind het leuk dat je nederlands spreekt. Het is goed oefening [?]. Aardappel is ook 'pomme de terre' in het frans. Pepernoot is Pfeffernüsse in het duits. Hmmm - slavink is voor mij een nieuwe woord, maar het lijkt op 'pigs in blankets' in het engels - vergelijkbaar tenminste.

In the city of Cologne in Germany, close to the Dutch border, we say "Botterram". The Cologne dialect has some familiarity with the Dutch language. And we say Ädäppele :)
In Afrikaans we say Toebroodjie for Sandwich, Grondboontjiebotter for Peanut Butter and Spookasem for Cotton Candy.

When I lived in Aruba, I remember there was this tiny little place in which they used to sell pork chops, but the magic wasn't them, it was an out of this world concoction called pindasaus, omg, up to this day the only reason I wanna come back to Aruba is to seek this place..I wish they're still there..Ik wil ga daar weer!!

Cicer gaat nog verder terug naar het woord Cycle of cyclus. Het betekent rond of voltooiing. Het woord kerk vindt daar ook zijn oorsprong in. Kikkererwt is dus een gewone ronde erwt. Grauwe erwten of in het Gronings Grauwe Aart'n zijn kapucijners

I think it will go all back to Latin and it was translated somewhere down the line

We noemen in Hongarije "vattacukor". Het eerste deel is watten wat is zacht en meestal wit. Het tweede deel is suiker en suikerspin is uit suiker. We hebben veel samengesteld worden😅

Een variant van pindakaas is 'kinderpindakaas'. Uitdaging: probeer eens te achterhalen in welke context dit woord uitsluitend gebruikt wordt/ werd.

Ik heb altijd geleerd dat Pindakaas in Nederland nooit als pindaboter op de markt gebracht mocht/mag worden vanwege het feit dat de Nederlandse Voedsel- en Waren Wetgeving de term ‘boter’ alleen voor producten gebruikt mag worden die zuivel bevatten (uit de tijd dat margarine in opkomst kwam). Dat verklaart niet waarom wij er dan kaas van hebben gemaakt, maar wel waarom wij het engelse Peanutbutter niet hebben overgenomen.
Ja dat klopt, het mocht om die reden geen boter genoemd worden :) maar het woord “kaas” wordt door sommigen dus herleid tot de pindakaasjes in Suriname.
Pindakaas heet zo omdat er een warenwet was die het gebruik van het woord boter alleen voor zuivel toestond. Pindanoten mocht dus niet ..
Ja dat klopt maar het gaat er nog steeds om waarom het dan kaas heet ;)
Een nederlandse vriend het mij gezeggt, dat boterham een oude woord is en dat de mensen nu brodje zeggen.

Uitstekende aflevering. Eén opmerking, de etymologie van aardappel heeft geen verband met nachtschade. Solanum tuberosum is letterlijk normale aardappelplanten. De enige relatie is dat tomaat, aardappel en nachtschade deel uitmaken van het geslacht solanum. De meeste talen in Europa noemden aardappelen eerder iets soortgelijks: pomme de terre, Grundbirne en er was zelfs het oude Engelse "earthappel"!

Ah, we gebruiken dat nu niet meer. Het woordenboek komt uit de achttiende eeuw, vandaar “der” en de spelling Nederlandsche. Maar het betekent “van de” :)
