Ik ben Nederlander. Ik heb Nederlands gehad tot en met Atheneum. Ik vond Nederlands vrij saai altijd. Al het Nederlands dat ik spreek is eigenlijk op automatische piloot. Het is erg leuk om naar jouw video's te kijken en de regels achter het Nederlands te horen wat ik al 50 jaar spreek. Ik spreek ook Gronings, want dat sprak ik thuis tot de kleuterschool waar ik voor het eerst Nederlands leerde. Mijn ouders keken ook vaak Duitse TV, dus daar leerde ik al Duits van. Ook Engelstalige TV met ondertiteling. Daar leer je veel Engels van.. Mijn Engels en Nederlands is dus op Atheneum niveau. Ik doe ook elk jaar mee met het Groot Dictee Van De Nederlande Taal in december. Ik zit dan meestal in de middenmoot, soms wat hoger. Je doet het echt leuk. Jammer dat ik je niet als leraar Nederlands heb gehad op het VWO

Yet another erg belangrijke and super leuke video! Dank je wel! I’m really enjoying the characters 😆 They remind me of the Czech for Gary channel, which I could recommend just for fun. The Czech content isn’t so important (the videos are actually pretty light on instruction), but they’re *really* creative language-teaching videos, especially the earlier ones. I was confused before about these werkwoorden because they keep popping up in seemingly random contexts ahah it's incredible how the Dutch language uses relatively few words to say a lot of things! But thank again your hard work and for helping us understand 😄

I so agree, the things that are particularly hard about Dutch are kind of unique and surprising, like using the same few words _everywhere_! That and syntax. But it keeps it interesting :) I find these videos so clear and helpful in making sense of it all.

You've made a difficult subject really simple to understand, thank you! I was wondering if you have a video about "to put" as I wasn't able to find it. For example, ligt is paired with leg, staat with zet, zit with doe/stop, hangt with hang, and when to use plaatsen.

I was wondering about 2 similar constructions that confused me a bit:
De broek zit lekker.
De broek staat mooi.
Do I say the first one if it's with me and the second if it's for another person?
Almost! If you say "de broek zit lekker" then it's for the one who is wearing it (because you're the one feeling that it's comfortable), but "de broek staat mooi" can be said by anyone, including the one wearing it, because it's about looking nice on you :)

Kim how can chilling, lounging or sleeping be werkwoords ? In short Dutch use of verb sit is popular in the sense it is used in English when they say The marriage proposal did not SIT well with the girl. German use Stehen or stand to indicate placement of objects commonly.

Hoi Mo, niet echt.. het betekent meer "it's left ("standing"). "Ik laat het eten staan" (I'm leaving some of the food). Continue = doorgaan :)
We can say that liggen can be generally used to describe if something suits you or no.. Even if its clothes, beard and job I guess

Ook vraag ik me af: in die zin van jou, waarom zit Leonie "op school" en niet "in school"?

Some of the more abstract uses we also have in German and thus they feel natural to me in Dutch, but thinking about it they sound really odd when translated into English literally.
I only just realized (or thought about it) that you have different expressions in english and cant translate literally (it stands on the sign, the haircut stands you, sit in jail, keep sitting in school, it lies on me, where lies Amsterdam), but finally finally I can translate a lot of expressions literally from my mother tongue 😎 Hoera! This video is great! For Spanish people this is not complicated but annoying haha, because we use the same verb and preposition to define where is something, without paying attention about how it is placed. We laugh about this and how specific you have to speak in Dutch!

Beste Kim. ik spreek vloeiend Nederlands. Het valt me op dat je bij de uitleg andere begrippen gebruikt dan ik ken. Perfectum, Imperatief ken ik wel maar je gebruikt nog een aantal andere waar ik nooit van heb gehoord. Ik luister met verbazing. Heb je een overzicht van die termen? Ik ben gewend om "persoonsvorm" of het "hele werkwoord" te gebruiken. Soms hoor ik je wel "wederkerend voornaamwoord" zeggen. Heb ik nou op school iets gemist?
Hoi Arjen, nee je hebt niks gemist! Op de middelbare school leer je inderdaad andere terminologie dan als je een NT2-cursus doet. Althans, de meeste NT2-docenten gebruiken de Latijnse termen in plaats van de Nederlandse omdat die meer internationaal zijn. Voor veel studenten zegt een "persoonsvorm" niet zoveel, of de voltooid tegenwoordige tijd. De term "perfectum" voor voltooid tegenwoordige tijd en "imperfectum" voor de onvoltooid verleden tijd is veel makkelijker voor ze, omdat je die ook in het Engels gebruikt. Net zoals dat "adjectief" makkelijker voor hen is dan een "bijvoeglijk naamwoord". Maar niet elke school gebruikt weer deze termen, sommige gebruiken dan weer wel de Nederlandse, dus het kan soms voor hen ook ingewikkeld zijn. Soms gebruik ik ze dus beide in mijn video's, maar niet altijd. Ik denk dat ik een lijst ga maken met alle termen (Latijn-Nederlands-Engels) en die ga publiceren op mijn website zodat studenten (en ook Nederlanders zoals jij die het leuk vinden om over het Nederlands te leren) die erbij kunnen houden wanneer het verwarrend wordt. Ik wens je fijne feestdagen!

Why does the parliament "zit" in The Hague but the church "staat" downtown? I don't get it.
I'm guessing parliament is considered an entity (group of people), whereas a church is considered a thing (building).
Great reasoning! A church is indeed a thing and it's also "standing" vertically. And the parliament consists of people (like "Leonie zit op school", "de dief zit in de gevangenis").

De gebouwen staan :) dus de kerk staat in het centrum en het parlementsgebouw staat in Den Haag :) maar het parlement (de mensen) zit in Den Haag ;)
