Thank you so much for the video! Finding good material on Dutch language is not always easy, but at last the internet algorithms finally seem to be working in our favor :)
I've been struggling learning dutch alone because I'm just doing a self study. i'm getting hard to understand "de" and"het" until i found your video... and i think, i should watch and follow your videos and be my online video teacher in dutch,.... anyway thank you. I hope you keep uploading a learning tips and videos about Dutch language.
Hi Charlotte, thank you so much! I'm glad to be able to help. I also teach online now btw ;) (www.cleardutch.nl) Just in case you are looking for a private teacher. Otherwise just keep watching and studying. You can do it! :)
I've been speaking Dutch for well over 30 years and one normally just knows when to use which word but I never realised there's actually some logic to it. Well logic... consistent rules of some sort, which is more than I'd expect in our otherwise beautiful language ;p
Rules are really just the codification of custom. Native speakers learn from imitation, usually from their families. That’s one reason it’s harder to learn a new language as an adult. 😄
All words ending on -je have 'het' before it, also 'het jongetje' (the boy). But: 'de meid' (singular of the girl, not very often used word) is de as well as 'de jongen'. Btw! Also most fruits/veggies are 'de' :-)
Thank you so much! I confess I am used to put all the substantives into "tje" form so I can use het hahahaha but I'll try to stop doing that, specially now after your amazing explanation! :)
Hoi Arpit, dankjewel! :) Ik geef wel privéles, maar heb helaas al een wachtlijst. Er is nog wel plek bij de online cursussen. Je kunt op mijn site meer info vinden: cleardutch.nl
you did a good job but.... you left it on the halfway! Please go on and you cannot imagine how many followers you could have!!! You have the right skill to go on!!!
Hi Stefano, Thank you for your enthusiasm. I actually started this channel just to offer my students something extra outside the classroom. It was never my intention to get a lot of followers, but I am happy to see you guys like my videos. I'll try to upload more frequently (a).
Hola Julieta, estaba haciendo los videos para mis estudiantes y no contaba con siguedores fuera de ellos, jaja. But I'll try to be more consistent. :) Any requests?
Thanks so much to have explained this one. I was going crazy! There is just a little thing, that maybe you forgot: "het meisje, het konijn".. over "het kind". About the "people". Can you please clear me this? Are them just other two exception, or there are more or what?
Of course the nouns in Dutch have a gender, which you need to remember. De = masculine and feminine words, het = neutral words. For example: 'the gouvernment has made it's decision' = 'de regering heeft haar beslissing gemaakt'. We use 'haar' because 'regering', like almost all words ending on -ing (similar to the German -ung), is feminine. But 'the wine slowly gives off it's taste' = 'de wijn geeft langzaam zijn smaak af'. We use 'zijn' because 'wijn' is masculin. De wijn = masculine/zijn, de regering = feminine/haar. Neutral words always use het en zijn.
You are right, of course. But since many Dutch natives don't even know this, I don't feel it is fair to bother my students with this. Maybe only at a C1/C2 level this might be interesting, but most learners don't go that far. Learning Dutch is already complicated enough, I think, haha. ;)
Ik zag het al, ja. Bedankt voor je feedback! :) Ja, het is inderdaad lastig met die uitzonderingen. Ik behandel meestal alleen de meestgebruikte woorden en probeer dat een beetje in te schatten op B2 niveau, maar een grens is moeilijk te trekken en een echt complete lijst is geen beginnen aan. Allemaal overwegingen. ;) Maar als ze jouw opmerking lezen, weten ze deze woorden nu ook. :)
So far it's easy, but after 20 years I still wonder why the singular can't always be DE while the plural is, indeed. This applies to other languages like German or Russian, although Russian is very clear on the gender each noun belongs to. Nevertheless, over these 20 years I always say DE and only Het to the few words I learned.
How does this video only have 1k likes? It is extremely clear and helpful.
Heel erg bedankt! 😊

Hello dear can you make a video of adjectives. Thanks
Hallo Raiza, that is a good idea! Thank you for the suggestion. 😀
6:55 but if it's "Kinderen" ? In plural is De Kinderen right?
Yes.
Ja, dat klopt. Het kind / De kinderen
I really like this video
I love it! Do you give personal training?
Hoi Arpit, dankjewel! :) Ik geef wel privéles, maar heb helaas al een wachtlijst. Er is nog wel plek bij de online cursussen. Je kunt op mijn site meer info vinden: cleardutch.nl

So Strange. If I say :
- de chauffeur, de dokter, de leraar en de kok werken samen.
Is this sentence masculine or feminine??
Dank je
You’re great
HI Maarlen! Thank you for this very informative lesson on proper usage of de and het! Also, you are very pretty and cute! Dank je!!!!
Dank je wel voor het(of de?) video!
DE video ;)
All the translation software and sites give Het meisje and Interglot gives De meisje like you?
Meisje = het
(It ends in '-je')
This' been a great video... What happened with the channel? I wanna subscribe but it seems like it's been abandoned
Hola Julieta, estaba haciendo los videos para mis estudiantes y no contaba con siguedores fuera de ellos, jaja. But I'll try to be more consistent. :) Any requests?
Dank je well
Thanks so much to have explained this one. I was going crazy!

Can you please clear me this?
Are them just other two exception, or there are more or what?
Since meisje end with 'je' it is HET. ;) All words ending in 'je' are HET. Hope this helps!
Dank U
So, if we learn all the het words the "problem" is solved and one more exception is the "Het meisje". Thanks for the video!
Leuke les, Het is heel nuttig.
Ik wil graag een iemand om de taal te oefenen. Kan ik het vinden? ^^
Misschien kun je een exchange partner vinden via iTalki?
In the case of meisjes... would it be "de" too? (as you mentioned the plural is the dominant one).
Bedankt voor je vraag, Eunice.
Ja, dat klopt.
Het meisje
De meisjes
Het meisje...thank you.
Ja. Ik dacht het ook
Bedankt)
👍👍👍👍👍👍Dankejewel👍👍👍👍
Dankuwel

Dankjewel!! :)))
Het meisje is also an exception to the ‘de’ rule for people and proffesions
Autotje moet met dubbel 0, dus autootje. Verder dacht ik nog aan Het geding, het gezing en evt. nog wat andere medeklinkers: p, tr.
Ik zag het al, ja. Bedankt voor je feedback! :)

Autootje is met dubbele 'o' ;-)/ Autootje is with double 'o' ;-)
It's Okay, anyway we understand what she wants to tell and explain us
het meisje is also an exception?
Not an exception. It's a diminutive.
You could say so. It also ends in 'je'. ;)
❤😊
what about meisje? Isn't a girl a person?
Het kind and het meisje are exceptions to the persons rule. Or you could see meisje as a -je word (diminutive). These are all HET. ;)
It’s ends with je
I don't know but I feel that I have met you in Netherlands
Is meisje ook een uitzondering?
Yes, you could see it that way. Or you can remember that it is het because it ends in -je. As you wish. ;)
👍👍👍💙🌺💙
het is dus ook het onding
I'm in love
I'm still missing the part 6 of De and Het so we are still waiting you mijn docente
Je hebt gelijk. Ga ik binnenkort maken!
Good jop
Holla

Would be great if we could just change the language a bit, right? heheh
the words with ING I really can't see you should write it more clearly on the white board .
Bedankt voor je feedback! :)
Echo in the room. Not apropriate place for language lesson
Thank you for the feedback! :) This was my first video I made more than 3 years ago. For my newer videos this should be much better. 😅
dankje wel
