- This video shows you how to make a leading edge Solar Blanket Cover Tow Boom that allows a single individual to pull your solar blanket cover onto the pool without help from anyone. How many times do you neglect to use your solar blanket because there is nobody around to help you? With the green movement taking hold, energy prices rising and pool chemicals so expensive, you can't afford not to use your solar blanket. Here is the solution.
This is the best. The evaporation in my large pool drives me mad. No leaks. Just evaporation and I live on tank water. No town water.
The solar blanket is a blessing
In case your were wondering, I just received my June electric bill. The bill show's last years bill (June 2018) vs. current June 2019. I saved 25% on my electric bill!!! Believe me, that's a lot of money here int he NorthEast US. You can't afford not to do this.
Wow, thanks Daniel. What a great idea. At my age this really comes in handy and I'm gonna give it a try.
Thanks for sharing - Cheers
Simple and effective. Adding this to my things to do list. Thanks!
Wow,!!!! Very clever, thanks for sharing.
Very nice! Thanks for the wicked tip.
This is an awesome idea!! Doing it!!
You are amazing . Truly talented. Thanks for help
awesome, my afternoon project.
Love this idea, here in Sydney Australia energy bills are sky rocketing. This idea is excellent when on my own to pull the pool cover over our 9 metre pool. Only just now bought a pool blanket and roller looking forward to a warmer pool, less evaporation and chemicals. Your boom idea is supurb thanks for sharing
Honestly you won't be disappointed. Especially after you had a party and it's dark outside, it's just so easy
@@danwas44 Any hints on pushing the PVC piping through the noodles, just put one on and boy that was an effort, very tight, just kept twisting the one noodle on the PVC pipe which I held in a vice.
I didn’t have that issue, but I would recommend using a cool spray, we have one here in the US called Pam.
@@danwas44 I ended up trying very sparing amounts of olive oil and it worked. Thanks
Love it. Great idea.
Glad you like it!
Brilliant idea!
Thanks Mark, appreciate the feedback.
Get some blue tape! 😂
Very ingenious ! A question..How much extra weight is on the solar blanket . I ask because it might be much harder to reel the solar blanket up?
Hi, very little extra weight, essentially it's the weight of the small pvc pipe and pool noodles, maybe 3 - 4 pounds. Also, it's resting on the water even when I reel it in.
Update to energy usage: I was curious how much my Heat Pump was costing me vs the pool pump. I did some research and eventually installed an Emporia Vue system on my electric panel. It essentially tells you how much each circuit costs to run so i can see my heat pump costs vs pool pump. Shocking!!! My pool filter running for approx 12 hours never costs more than $5 per day. On the other hand, when I ran my heat pump for the same period (12 hours) it costs me $38. Wow, never knew till now how much the heater costs to run. Makes the solar blanket even more important to keep that heat in the pool once you run the heat pump.
This a great tip. But the problem is rolling it up to use the pool. Even with the roller, cover goes askew, the cover binds on corners…. Do you have a solution for rolling it up?
Hi Bob, i am sorry but i don't have that issue. Yould should check with your roller company to see what you are doing wrong. My roller has at least 1 foot on each side of free space for solar cover leeway and i just roll it up slowly and don't have any issues.
What is the reel shown in the video? It has locking wheels, I assume? Or did you anchor it to the deck somehow?
Hi Paul, the reel is called "Rocky's Easy Roller" and it anchors into the concrete with two hand screws so you can remove the roller very easy if you want it out of the way for a party (as an example)
@@danwas44 Thanks! And thanks for making the video - great idea.
Daniel : Excellent idea ! Quick question. My pool is 18x36. Should I make the tow boom 18 feet across? I made one the other day 10 feet like you did, but then I noticed that is the width of your pool. I think I would have to cut off four feet on each side since the 10 ft boom won't wrap around the cover. Any thoughts? Thanks for making this video!
Hi Greg
It doesn’t need to the entire width of your pool, but maybe 14 feet would be good. I would leave a couple of feet clearance on both sides in case your cover doesn’t roll up straight, good luck
I just did this yesterday... my pool is 18x36. I went with 2 pool noodle lengths exactly for the width, approx 10'. My local hardware place didn't have PVC, but they did have the grey conduit piping... so bought that and trimmed off about 8-10", they had the plugs (instead of caps to close off the ends). Bag of zip ties and 100' of rope (with lots left over of course). I have approximately 3.5ish feet on end without 'boom'. Works great.
@@yvesmainville2348 Can you post a video of you covering the pool with your 10 ft boon? I am about to mount the 10 foot boon to my 18x36 foot pool, and would love to see how it works covering the 18 foot width pool. I was going to add 2 feet on each side for a total of 14 feet, leaving two feet short on each side with the boon . Thanks!
Hi Daniel
Almost finished the boon. Having trouble attaching the grommets to the solar cover. Any tips? Thanks. Greg
@@gregorylittle7009 Greg, make sure you have plenty of slack in the pool cover so it's not too tight when installing the grommets. Also, use a wooden block on the underside so you are on a flat surface when installing the grommets
Did the blanket lasted for you? Or bubbles disintegrated ? Thx
Still have it and it's not disintegrated yet, blanket is about 6 years old right now.
what if you just put the blanket over the ool and put weight around to prevent from flying , does it make sense
Hi Lisa, of coarse it will work, the problem is will you do it every night. I am religious about putting it on every night. We had my 7 year old grand daughter here yesterday and she was able to pull my solar blanket on all by herself, and my pool is large. I save money every night by keeping the heat in the pool, and avoiding evaporation. Hoep that makes sense.
I’m wondering what material type would work/last the most
Not sure i understand your question?
What about the area by the steps? It is open. A solar blanket has to cover the entire pool for it to work correctly. Was also wondering how is saved you money on your electric bill?
Hi Mark, respectfully, I disagree that the solar blanket needs to cover 100% of the pool to be effective. Is it 100% effective, maybe not, but I have proven my electricity bill is significantly reduced. I save on my electric bill because my pool heater is not having to heat the water as much as I don't lose heat at night by keeping it covered every night. I can keep the temp more consistent which means we will use the pool much more.
@@danwas44 What do you mean You use it more? If you have a heater for your pool and no solar cover you would be using it more anyway.
@@mkdsk101 Not necessarily, I live in the NorthEast US and it often gets cold at night thus dropping the temp of the pool a lot (if I don't use the solar cover every night), I have a Heat Pump which takes a long time to heat the pool up.
I have a similar cutout for my steps that the blanket doesn't cover. It really makes no difference on a pool this size. Ours is always warm!
It makes a minor difference not enough to worry about or not get a cover, that's for sure. My wife hates the cover because of how it looks and having to pull it and put it back, but I refuse to pay to run the heater and then half all the heat leave the pool by the next morning. Too wasteful. Nope.
I cant use that because I have a saltwater pool and the salt just breaks down the noodles after a year. Check out my version.
I just watched your video, well engineered.
@@danwas44 thanks. I had to watch what I used because of the saltwater. When I first saw yours, I thought, WOW! Why didn’t I think of that. Yours is easier.
that's pretty ghetto
