Even though it IS possible to salvage your old shackles by drilling out the old bolt and replacing it with a new 14mm shackle bolt it still takes a ton of time. So if you are doing your leaf spring replacement I WOULD recommend replacing the shackles at the same time. But... If you want to save 100 bucks, you can always do it the way i show you here in the video and it will work just fine.

I have a 96 Toyota T100 and I'm doing the leaf springs on it soon. I tried watching a couple other videos and they weren't as near as clear as yours was . Thank you so much for making the video. I realized it was 5 years ago when you made it but it worked for me today. Your awesome.
How much of this carried over to the T100? I have a T100 too that I want to do this for as well
It should be nearly identical. I know this question was a while ago, but in case anyone else is wondering….. it should be pretty much identical for every Toyota pickup. They haven’t changed much in the rear suspension design for a good long while!
Leaf spring replacement by Bob Ross. Great video, thank you!
Great video. You did this almost ten years ago, but it is still very relevant. Thanks for pointing out the various issues that can come up with this install.
Glad I could help! And no, you have to buy the shackles and leaf springs separately. Getting new shackles will save you about an hour or so of work on each side.
Just realized I was watching a JerryRigEverything video to do this on my truck... wow...where this channel has come
Great video! Thank you. Very clear, calm and to the point. You've shown all the relevant bolt sizes as well as tips for removing frozen bolts. I appreciate your taking the time to do this! Excellent work.
Finally finished both springs! The ratchet strap recommendation from the other guy was a life saver! I would recommend spraying all of the nuts and bolts with WD40 several days in advance and buying either white or apple cider vinegar 5% to soak rusted parts in.
Those ratchet straps are fantastic. I used them so much when I was lifting my old jeep. They help line everything up. Rust is the worst. Good call with spraying everything down w/ lubricant.
I am replacing the leaf springs on my Sisters 99 next weekend, this video was amazing, very good job man. So many videos out there on youtube, very few are really useful, this one is like you made it just for me. Great job! thanks for the succinct video.
Thanks! I like hearing that my videos help people out. Thanks for watching!
Really nice video you did. I don't have a truck to work on, but I like learning new things.
I was really impressed with all the extras you put in a side from the actual parts. Great guide!
DS08 Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Looks pretty easy. 10/10 will mess it up doing it.
As the owner of a rusty truck I appreciate the video
Very nice video, no bs and to the point ! This is exactly what I was looking for I thought I was doing something wrong these bolts are all stuck in the shackels
Thanks Jerry! Greatly appreciated! I just picked up a 99 Tacoma myself, and I'm about to replace the leaf springs & add some shackles.
This is a great video! I appreciate ya. At one point, I caught myself drifting off, thinking, "I feel like Matthew Mcconaughey is teaching me a thing or two." Once I came to, I had to rewind to where I last remembered being focused. Haha! Great voice, man!
+LaTrelle Gomez Lol, thats awesome! Glad I could help out man. Good luck with your truck!
No problem, Its a fun project. Good luck!
Look how famous you are now
I wish I lived closer. Just got new leaf springs & rear shocks. I asked for all shocks, they upcharged me about $100 per shackle & spring then cut about 1/2 way through the spring mounts and never told me or replaced them.
Excellent video and clear camera definition under your truck.
Thanks for the video, I have started the process and ended up putting everything back together once I realized I will have to do what you did by cutting the bolts. I will continue when I have new ones. Rust sucks is right!!
Thanks again
Smart man, cutting those things is a doozy.
Its still a hassle cutting out the old bolt. But hey, it works. Have fun man!
I just did mine today, I feel your pain for the rust part. Great video.
Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback.
Excellent. this will be playing next to me on repeat as I tackle my '96 tomorrow morning... Will try to remember to tell you how it worked out.
Lucas Kramer Sounds great man! Hopefully the video helps ya.
It worked! Took me just under 12 hours. Was a marathon for sure. The bottom bolts of the shackles are knurled under the head, both of mine needed to be drilled out and one needed additional grinding. Amazing how long it held on. Grind some, beat on it, grind more, pound more. Also used heat, not sure if it helped. Thanks for your video! Very helpful.
Lucas Kramer Lol, these older trucks like to put up a fight when you replace their parts.
Good video, never trust a cement block get good solid wood ones the cement will just shatter.
Thanks Zac. I am doing this job this weekend.
This is a terrific video. Thanks for the understandable and nicely delivered dialogue. i am doing mine tomorrow .
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the video...I'm installing my leaf springs next week so this is a big help.
Yes thank You as well as (BLK Beauty)my 98 V6 pre-runner extended cab SR5,
thanks For video very helpful!
??what size was hole and length of bolts
You are a G my dood!!! thanks for making this simple, easy to follow video. Sending good vibes your way!
Thank you for making this helpful video.
thanks , you gave me some great ideas how to remove a rusty seized lower front srtut bolt on my 2002 tundra . thank you for sharing your vid
No problem. Glad I could help. Rust sucks.
man! never have i actually seen a USEFUL youtube video. thank you so much for this. its kind of crazy how exactly the same this is to my situation. (96 tacoma) and honestly, i never even thought about changing the bolt. i was going to try to find new shackles but this is a waaaaaaay easier solve. cheers!
Excellent production on this video, really good job.
Why wouldn't you show the leaf spring getting put into place? The new spring has alot more arc than the worn out one and is making me crazy. Crazier. I have the axle at maximum droop. Idk what else I can do to leverage damn thing into position...
Thanks for the nice video,it will help me when I do my 03 Tacoma. Have a great day.
The 929-401 is listed on the Dorman site as the left spring replacement and 929-404 as the right side spring replacement. I see you are installing the 929-401 on the right rear position. It is not clear from your video what spring assy you installed on the left. Can you clarify for me ....
Use aerokroil to bust thru the rust. Like magic.
Parts have jumped on the leaf spring & two shackers to $310.00
Sometime it may not be worth doing the repair yourself due to the ages.
Because soon the wheel bearing/struts/shocks/cv, lower control arms & so on are next.
You should see em now! It’s like 386 per spring and 78 bucks per shackle. Inflation
Excellent video. Well done!
How does the lower shackle pin get seized to the bushing if it is meant to rotate inside the bushing? I would think the constant suspension motion would prevent that from happening, and when I did mine I kinda was thinking that the lower shackle pin must be pressed into the leaf spring at the factory, and then attached to the frame with the upper pin. Either way, I'd just buy a shackle kit and have the new bushings.
I have that same jack!
Thanks for the great guide! Going to tackle this now on my 96 taco...
Good luck man! Hopefully its not as rusted out as mine was.
Being in CA helped a lot with the rust! There was really nothing too complicated about the job except lining the axle up with the leaf springs. I ended up using a ratchet strap to pull the axle forward and into place. Thanks again for the great video!
Those ratchet straps sure come in handy.
Just did this on my 96, same exact thing happened. took 3 hours for one side trying to figure out how to make the shackle work. luckily I did it at a wrecking yard and only had to buy one new bolt.. $10 and it squeaks grrr.. might just buy a new shackle. other side took 30 min haha
Good video, except never tighten the front and rear leaf spring bolts until you have the vehicle on the ground under weight.
Thanks! And you speak the truth. The more you can lube things up... the better.
what size was the bolts if i need them ?
Good luck man! I hope yours isnt as rusted as mine ;-)
The leaf springs have deeper grooves at a level 7 for sure
where can i find that replacement bolt
Great video Thanks a bunch, Will be doing my 99 Tacoma as soon as parts arrive
i have got to do this on the front sprigs on a heavy duty rig.
Great video (Im deaf so I just used CC) my 09 Tacoma has the rear leaf spring recall so Im going to have them replace the shackles as well.
+Kevin Kelley Ive been going through all 330 of my videos adding CC to them. MOST have been done already. I just added this one today. Thanks for watching!!
Are they the same measurement for both sides or are they different sizes?
If you werent removing your leaf spring and were just putting extended shackles in how would you suggest getting the grinded off bolt out of the bushing?
Thanks for posting this video! I'm about to do my 01 Tacoma. : /
Good vid dude! 👍🏼
How did you get your u bolts off? mine are stuck. Really helpful video though! thank you!
hey love the video very helpful, do the shackles come with the leaf spring kit or no?
I almost have the drivers side front leaf spring off but I am having problems with the front bolt of the leaf spring ...the nut is smashed next to the gas tank enough to where I can't get a rachet on it or get any leverage. I saw your note about the jack not working for the passenger side. Not sure if I should be worried about sparks that close to the tank if I use a cutting wheel. Did you cut that one too?
I had this same problem on my 96’ Tacoma i hauled a load of 2x4’s and it strained my leaf springs just like these.
WHERE CAN I BUY THAT REAR LEAF SPRING BOLT I NEED SON THNAKS GOOD VIDEO
darkknightpig Try a local hardware shop.
you do know that toyota recalled 8 hundred thousand tacoma for rust holes in there
frames and it looks like your frame has some rust spots i would take a pick hammer
and tap on your rust spots to see you find any rust holes becuase some tacoma "s
have broken in half on the highway good luck merry christmas ...
Good call. It is my friends truck. I'll have him check it out.
What size were the bolts you replaced
I took the brake cable off u did and now there is not enough slack to get it back on how do i fix?
Nvm just had disengage ebrake lol
Thank You
excellent video. Thanks very much.
hanknz01 No problem! Thanks for watching.
Did the new springs still look like they were upside down when you lowered the truck back on the ground. I have the same truck and my leaf springs look like they are arched upside down instead of like a normal truck bowing downward.
I am going to go to the wrecking yard and look for some better ones. Maybe off off a regular half ton. Funny thing is the truck really doesn't look like it is sitting that much lower in the back than it should. Toyota should be ashamed also seems to be a common problem on the tacomas.
You should always replace the U-bolts too
How's the ride feel now that's it's been changed out?
Hey, first of all very good video thank you! Just wanting to confirm, the leaf springs aren't under any tension or compression when taking them off? That is the only thing I am nervous about with replacing my leaf springs and I haven't seen any video where they say whether or not it is simply unbolt and drop down or if the spring is under tension? Thanks for any advice!
Bill Capon As long as you have the truck lifted up by the truck frame so that the axle is just hanging there, they will not be under tension. If you lift up the truck by the axle so that the shocks are compressed than the springs WILL be under pressure.
JerryRigEverything awesome, thanks for the quick response!
No problem! I enjoy making videos, and answering questions.
That cinder block will crumble like a cookie if your stand fails, very
dangerous, just use good quality jack stands , at least 4 works good
Would those leaf springs fit on my 1992 toyota 4x4?
I'm surprised you didn't use a angle grinder you can get em like $30
I'm gonna assume the leaf springs we're like $300
did you physically have to move the axel to get the hole to line up on the eve spring? If so how?
+Koren Robins I didnt have to move anything to get the axle to line up. It just naturally wants to go there. BUT if you need to, you can take tiedowns, and put them from the axle to the frame and 'ratchet' it the direction that you want it to go. I think I used that method on one of my jeep lift videos forever ago.
What do you do if the bracket that holds the front of the spring is broken? :(
There are websites for that the only thing is it has to be welded in
Less rust than my 03 Wisconsin taco
Fucking shackle bolts! They sell ones that are greaseable, but you would think the factory would use a little grease on the bolt so shit like that won’t happen. After hassling with my front bolts for a while, decided to leave the bolt in, the springs were still good, but I broke a add a leaf spring on one side, so replaced the add a leaf with the springs still in the truck. Tried heating the bold head for a bit with a torch, but it’s solid on there won’t move, soaked it with ATF fluid. Was thinking just leaving the bolt loose with a jamb nut on top, and let the road vibrations work the bolt in the shackle loose eventually!
What size bolt did you use to replace the rear one you cut off?
@@thomaspelham8108 Never got the fronts out, they are still in there. I needed to replace the the helper spring, so just dropped the rear shackles, and replaced the leaf that was broken. In retrospect I was going to replace both spring all new, but instead just unbolted the leaf springs, and replaced both the old helper springs, a bit cheaper, but now that I think about it since the front shackle bolts would not come out, I saved myself a lot of hassle, and cost also. At some point they may need to come out, but I'll need to cut them out with a Sawzall or other.
personally I thought the vid was very helpfull. thanks
I would not have cut the bolt just put penetrating fluid on the bolt
my nigga jerryrig
what were the hardware sizes for the stuff you had to replace???
+Jon Wittenstein I wish I would have kept track, I just took the old hardware into the shop and had them match it.
NEVER REUSE U BOLTS!!!!
