Batman: You've endangered lives all over the city. Nora would never have wanted this.
Mr. Freeze: No, what she wants is to live a long life under the warmth of the sun...her hand in mine. But because of him, she'll only feel the icy touch of a man whose emotions run as cold as the blood in his veins!

Mr. Freeze was always my favorite Batman villain, entirely due to the awesome rendition in Batman the Animated Series. Well before they changed art styles and gave him a detachable mobile head, that was stupid. Villains are so much more interesting when you understand and sympathize with them. I think that introductory episode with Freeze won an emmy back when it came out.

Out of all the Batman villains, Mr. Freeze is the one I feel sorry for the most. Guy never got a break. His parents disowned him because all he wanted was to save animal lives. He was married but that happiness ended quickly because she got ill and Fries tried to save her but businessmen threatened to pull the plug and he got in to an accident surviving only in sub-zero temperatures. His body deteriorated leaving him nothing but a head. More businessmen betrayed him in Batman Beyond. His last words before he died were "Believe me, you're the only one who cares." Terry McGinnis was the only one who cared for him. Bruce Wayne cared for him too, but Terry knew Fries could redeem himself and he did.

You know I kinda feel for Freeze. I mean if my wife (correction if I had one XD) was dying and I had to freeze her to save her and find a cure. I would turn to crime just as soon as he did. Besides, I feel like he could be villain I could reason with (unlike the Joker). He kinda reminds me of Magneto because they both have a reasonable cause to do what they do. Heck I wouldn't even call Magneto's cause villainous (then again I have only seen 1 of the X-men movies, but I still know a lot about him). Freeze is literally in the wrong spot at the wrong time and I think almost every man on earth would do what he is doing to save his wife.

Mr. Freeze is such a complex character I just can't wrap my mind on him. He's really not a ciminal, he only has one thing that brings him happiness...Nora Fries everything else in his life is nothing but pain and suffering.
He's a "the end justifies the means" man in which I can't really blame him...so here os the dilema.. On one hand I understand and justify his actions but on the other I undersstand his ways are wrong.
I heard they changed his background in the new 52 which that's a shame. Not all the villains have to get evil.

I enjoyed learning about Mr. Freeze's formative years and how he would literally freeze animals he loved in the hope that they would somehow be saved from death albeit a slightly demented but also strangely altruistic theory. Mr. Freeze is by far one of the most interesting of Batman's villains because of his love for his wife Nora who is ultimately his fundamental reason for becoming a Super-villain initially. When you look at the symbolic relationship that exists between Mr. Freeze and his wife there are many subtle and explicit commonalities and ironic twists they share. Mr. Freeze and Nora in order to exist both require temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit is a fact explicitly stated throughout the mythology of Mr. Freeze but while Nora suffers from a debilitating disease, Mr. Freeze is essentially biologically mutated into a being that requires a sub zero environment to survive. Considering that "normal" humans require an internal body temp. of 98.6 Fahrenheit to survive it can somewhat be assumed that Mr. Freeze is technically dead yet is still somehow animate unlike his wife who remain inanimate like a doll or figurine inside a snow-globe. The most ironic and sad aspect of Mr. Freeze's state is that even if he were to find the cure for his wife's disease, un-"thaw"? her and then cure her he would never be able to really touch his wife because of the subzero state he exists within. Mr. Freeze will never be able to feel the touch of his wife's "warm hand" because he is literally and emotionally cold at heart. He cannot feel love or warmth yet yearns for the warmth and love of his wife Nora.

Batman: The Animated Series really made Mr. Freeze a great character. His origin story and desire to save Nora just brought another dimension to the character. Now it doesn't feel right to see Mr. Freeze portrayed any other way.

mister freeze is easily one of the most relatable villains in comics. seriously. one thing id like to point out is this: mister freeze is drawn like a super hero while batman is drawn like a villain. literally that's what the art says if you just look at it with no preconceptions. mr. freeze is all bright colors and circles, which for some reason are pleasing to the eye and are generally seen to be good (theres really no explanation for this other than human eyes like circles), while batman is all dark colors and black and his polygonous base shapes are triangles. which are "evil" (again, its just a human eye thing. think about it this way, if darth vader were made with circles instead of triangles, would he look nearly as evil or intimidating?)

What sickens me the most is because how the system works in batman's universe could not clearly see the mechanations behind such a villain turning into what he was. Give him Nora, allow him to save her, and in exchange for his crimes allow him to continue his research into saving people and his wife and working to stop crime instead of wasting funds keeping him in prison like that, and undoing the wrong he's done. My superpower would be to be a freaking lawyer in this world.

I have always considered Mr. Freeze to be among my favorite Batman villains. However, I would have not used the character in a live-action Batman movie from the 90s as Mr. Freeze started to gain popularity shortly after his debut on Batman: The Animated Series and later on in the comics.

At the beginning I felt sorry for him, but in Subzero he just started getting on my nerves. He hates the whole world instead of his bullies and ex boss, and he's so immoral only his wive's disapproval stops him from killing everyone. He's willing to kill an innocent girl to save his wife, attempts to kill Batman countless times, and he still takes it for granted that Batman should save him from an oil rig. Get over yourself already.

Max X you don't know me, we haven't actually spoken, and your first inclination is to pick a fight and end it in one comment? Nice. Nolan isn't a god, so don't try to guess my thoughts. TDK and TDKR are good but both have a bunch of plot holes. I definitely feel like the latter was rushed and neither give Batman much screentime or character development. However, I think you may be the first person to passionately defend Batman and Robin. Congratulations? I'm sorry if I hurt you as you clearly seem to care about the film.

I feel so sorry for that inflation Mr. Freeze's character suffered because of "Batman & Robin" - isn't that also the reason why they published "Subzero" straightly on VHS? A tragedy makes a monster of a scientist, who wanted nothing but to love his wife...

I like the version of Mr. Freeze that was used in the series "The Batman", that version seemed much more villainous & less sympathetic, & he didn't seem to be so vulnerable to temperatures above freezing & had the mutant power to constantly produce ice from his body, so he needed the special suit to help him better control his power & blast freeze rays from his hands so he used it to freeze anything in his path, steal diamonds just because they're also known as "ICE" & try to concur Gotham City.

Bruce Wayne's a bit of a dick. Think of it: if he gave Mr. Freeze the money to unfreeze and cure his wife, or developed technology to do as such, then Freeze wouldn't have a need to do all the stuff he does. One less 'villain', many lives saved and possibly an ally or at least friend for the future. But nope, Batty needs new 'rangs :P

Neither of those shows are considered canonical in the comics. The comics have taken inspiration from them, but not direct enough material to consider the plots canonical.
Also, he showed humanity when Nora was saved. It wasn't long-lived, but it was enough to prove that all he wanted was funding so that Nora could return to him healthy.
Finally, in TNBA, he stopped being a villain in the end...

Arnold's interpretation of the character seems wrong in many ways. Not just because of the puns, but also because of his big figure. He doesn't signal any pain for his own fate, nor for his beloved's fate. Instead of being tormented by his mutation, he just seems to embrace it. TAS has a much better portrayal of the brokenhearted and brilliant villain.

I liked Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance :) He was chilling (not meant to be a pun), funny, and sympathetic. He and the Sandman (Spider-Man 3, even if he may have been emo to the point of being boring) are the best comic book ant-heroes/or anti-villains in cinema.
