Same! I am a Musicproduction teacher in a modern music school and always tell my students, prices are not everything, and my best example is Reaper vs ProTools, when you have a look at the feature/functionality/pros/cons-List!
Thanks for another great video Kenny. Although I'm still learning to use Reaper, I'm now convinced that it's far superior to any other Daw that I've ever used.
Right on Kenny! I knew Reaper was powerful. Now if I could only remember everything but I can always pull up a video when I get stuck. Senior moments. Thank you so much for everything you share, I really appreciate all you do!!!
@0:30 and @0:48 Are the stems imported and played back with the same master channel plug ins (and settings) and the faders are at the same values between DAWs (an d I assume same pan law?) Things sound very different.
"P_beeep_s, and Reaper." Proper lolz. Thanks, Kenny. This is something I'm gonna have to process and practice for a while before it makes proper sense. But it sure looks useful!
Another great video, as always, Kenny! I recommend doing a video about the differences of volume and volume pre-fx automations. I never know when to use each one. I guess when trying to normalize say like a vocal track, is better to use the pre-fx volume automation before it hits the compressor, right? Again, good work!
Kenny, I have a choice to use Reaper on either a Dell Windows 10 computer or a MacBook Pro High Sierra computer. Your suggestions please as to the advantages and pros vs. the cons of each. Thanks for all your tutorials! -- Dan --
Kenny thank you. One small tip, at min.3:25 you bring the track mixer at the right side of the track panel. Can you tell me how to do it? I only know how to bring on the left together with the whole mixer and then short it. Tks
Kenny, or anyone else, question: I haven't been using 'Trim/Read' mode, or 'Trim Volume', but I think I'm getting the same functionality by simply clicking the green light to the left of the Volume automation track (the power button). It seems that my automation still performs itself, but it also disconnects the fader from the envelope so I can make trim adjustments (without automation). What's the difference in doing this and using 'Trim/Read' mode? Took me a long time to finally understand how Reaper's track volume faders can be 'one level above' the automation lane's volume if you hit that button. It frustrated me many times that my automation was 'going away', but in reality, it lets you mix with faders even after writing volume automation. INCREDIBLY useful.
@@REAPERMania Thanks--so what is the point of the power button at the left side of automation tracks? It seems the automation is still performed while off
@@mellowords the button tooltip reads "Arm for recording", so when it's Off no writing onto the envelope is possible could probably be used as a safety measure against accidental overwriting
Good topic. but I find recording midi automation separately an issue, like just bends, tremolo etc... I just want to apply control changes to particular tracks. I can go back, pick away and change pitch, tremalo after recording which I end up doing. I just want an automation I can re record over.
Awesome, for this kind of mods, I think it's fun to have a midi mixer, where you use the faders more on a feel. I used already vol optimization or automatization, but with a mouse it's not that obvious, if you want to do it that way. Hens, I tried to get a click out of a track, but I failed to do so. I'm probably doing something wrong here. I think I have to do more exercise on editing?
I wouldn't say you're hearing "more" or "less" of the envelope when trimming it through the fader... you're just virtually moving it up on down... that is... trimming :)
This was dope tho. I havent used @# @*&$ since vers 7. I think i always knew this but i dont think i realized how dope it was. Basically reaper keeps the proportions of the automation data of the selected envelope, allowing for overall changes keeping automation proportions. I use it on my snares and delay sends. It gives a more livley feel to how a drummer would really play to me. 🤷♂️
For real. There are like 4 different ways to do the same thing that you can't do at all in some pro DAWs. How about creating curves in your automation points? That alone is something I couldn't live without. I see engineers drawing in curves manually and my soul hurts. Perfectly variable exponential curves between two points is just one example of a design philosophy that allows for both simplicity and flexibility.
The default trim/read mode in Reaper should be the default for every DAW… it honestly makes no sense why this isn’t standard behaviour in DAWS. That said Pro Tools does have Trim Mode (used to only be in HD) which changes the fader to pretty much the same functionality as Reaper… still blows my mind that all the other DAWS are stuck in the old console automation workflows… never made any sense to me to lose control of your fader for relative gain once automation is written in software…
This is awesome Kenny. I hope you can do more Pro Tools / Reaper comparison videos. Might make it easier to help get my stubborn PT buddies to switch!

I can't remember it all either.
Those bleeps were not expected but well received hahahahahaha nice one!
I was on the fence.
Thanks for keeping the bleeps, made my day.
Your tutorials are always amazing!
"Mixing just isn''t that important KG" will be the epitaph on my grave ! Merci monsieur Gioia pour tant de bons conseils !
Kenny i stil got all your protools tutorials. Im very grateful. ❤
I just want to say thank you so much for your videos. They are gems.

Yes. Use it for fixing things like p pops or Ess sounds. Any type of cleaning up. The normal one is more useful for riding the fader.
This was cool to watch, i've never used {bleep bleep} so it's interesting to see the differences.

The Volume envelop is Post Fader and Trim is pre fader. Am i correct?
Thanks Kenny! I’ll re-watch this a couple more times 😄 I find the different automation modes quite confusing 🙃
I might explain them again.
@@REAPERMania I have a feeling you might, in a different context... 😉
I really kinda celebrated each "Pr-bleeeeeeep" in this video. And I learned something!

to remove a click sound from track, you could use Reaper spectral editing ;-)
Neat. A good introduction.
How many of you have enough grey hair to remember Kenny when he was doing BLEEP videos Before Reaper?!
LOL
i have no hair, that's how well i remember that
The Pro T**ls bleeps had me dying haha Thanks for the comparison, Kenny! Sick song for the demo btw

How to create a 1 track floating on reaper?

I wonder how many times Protools wouldve crashed if this tutorial was the other way around. 🤣🤣
It did crash right after I filmed this. No joke.
@@REAPERMania 🤣🤣🤣
you dont even speak "pro tools".. niticed that and loved that
is pro tools a bad word now lol?
Glenn Fricker has your answer @ SpectreSoundStudios =D
Well, Pro Tools has Trim Mode, too. Not showing or mentioning this in your video misses a bit the point and might be even misleading.
Yes good you beeped that dirty word. LOL.
lol I love the bleep
Reaper’s default is better
It's usually bleeping pro tools... not the other way around....😂
Why the annoying Pro Tools thing?

well thats not confusing or anything.
