  • I popped over to see Trish Garden and Mark Farr to hear them chatting about their time operating as Marauder Miniatures. A really wonderful period in GW's history, it was great to hear their comments - especially on Marauder putting its stamp on future editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battle. The pair of them also treated me to an impressive display of their collections of Marauder Miniatures and also the mug!

Marauder made some of the best minis for warhammer. They had so much character

The orc shaman on wyvern is my all time favourite miniature. I was so pleased it had that recent re-release for The Old World.

The Marauder minis always felt like the superior range. Those large hard plastic blister boxes with the slide of back were awesome. The minis were clearer in design and so good compared to a lot of the Citadel sculpts at the time.

    • @rotwang2000
      @rotwang2000 Месяц назад

Those blister boxes were very useful for storing bits and other minis.
Marauder were not the most sleek and refined of minis, but some sculpts were so alive and chunky. Gah, wish I had picked up a few more back in the day.

The thing Trish said about the influence of Marauder is bang on. All the Warhammer fantasy minis after Marauder, looked way more like Marauder minis than the citadel stuff that had gone before. Marauder may have been reabsorbed, but stylistically, Marauder took over.

Trish says times change but she's hardly changed at all. I never realised how many of my favourite minis were Marauder.

Aly and Trish designed the majority of my favorite miniatures. I think it’s widely known that I am a great fan of their dark elves. A range with so many iconic miniatures. Marauder miniatures as well as the art of this era from Mark Gibbons, Des Hanley, etc share this fine dark humor before this was replaced with the grim dark by the dawn of the 6th WHFB edition. A great era which lives on in my memories and in my cabinets.
Thanks Tom for this wonderful trip in this fantastic era.
    Cheers, Georg

I would love to read that!
While the beginning of Marauder miniatures is highlighted a lot, the changes with the release of the 4th WHFB edition lies still in the dark. At this moment WHFB returned into the focus of GW/citadel and Marauder was reabsorbed. That former freedom Aly and Tris had was replaced by a schedule from GW. For me it´s unclear how the schedule for a miniature range was shared between Citadel and Marauder at this time point and the further years. Best example are the high elves from 1992. It looked like Aly focused on the troopers and mounted monsters were now shared between Citadel designing the rider and Tris designing the monster. One example was the Orc shaman on Wyvern (Designed by Aly and Trish) and the first this was switched Eltharion on Griffon (designed by Jes and Trish). It would be very interesting if you could shed some lights into this.
      Cheers, Georg

@docgeorc Thank you Georc, are you the guy who paints those stunning Dark Elves, among which you had the unreleased Executioners? If so, I'm a big fan! So far I've written articles mostly on the histories of specific units in Warhammer Fantasy so branching out to write a wider article on Marauder Miniatures is a big undertaking and it's very difficult to get answers to specific questions like that, but I will do my best to try and shed some light on that aspect of it because that's very interesting and something that isn't known. It will still take quite a while before the article is ready, but I'm working on it steadily. You can find my previous articles on Google with "Rambling Longbeard". Thank you very much for the interesting question Georc!

    These interviews are a delight!
I particularly love the discussion of how early fantasy did not have dedicated lines. Has a sort of all that's old is new again feel with the rise of model agnostic systems. It is heartwarming to hear how much that creative spirit has always been part of the hobby.

I collect and paint figures from this period and I'm here to say how well Marauder miniatures did at completing citadel.
One great example - plastic shields the GW ones are flat, lack detail and hard to work with. The Marauder ones were curved and had great motifs moulded on.

I started in 1990, and the adverts for the Chaos and Dwarf armies absolutely blew me away. Uniform and creative miniatures, but still with the earlier GW imagination. Marauder will always be number 1 to me. The Chaos Dwarfs in particular, was/are/will always be my favourite miniatures. CDs are my favourite race because of those figures. The CDs, Chaos, earlier Dwarfs, metal horses, river trolls and the large monsters are absolute classics. For good or for worse the late Marauder stuff was definitely the precursor to 4th edition. At the time, I thought it was great that we were getting the dwarven elites. However, the look and feel of the earlier 'make what we want, looking like we want' was gone. They felt a lot more corporate and sadly lost some of the magic. Which was a micro-environment of GW as a whole.

Just got the Marauder Liche the other day and one of the Wights before, really great miniatures that don't get talked about enough! Sadly the Marauder Skeletons weren’t too special, a few great sculpts but mostly a bit bland. Obviously the Marauder Dwarfs are superb, I have almost all the Slayers and I'm now slowly collecting the clansmen and crossbowmen - great stuff. Obviously there's loads more iconic models there, but I wanted to mention the Undead Characters range as a less known but really stunning mini range, I'm quite certain they are all by Trish. They are surprisingly large too, especially the Wights which wouldn’t look small next to the most modern Wight models.
