Triumph set at the 83 US Festival is one of the all time great live performances. They absolutely stole the show that day and the same stage that same night had Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osborne, Joe Walsh... And TRIUMPH was by far the BEST!!!

Triumph. Power trio with a singer with an unusually high voice, a bass player who also plays pedals and keyboards, an extremely dexterous and brilliant lead guitarist, and lyrics that have deep meaning.
The debut album "Rush" dropped on March 1st, 1974.
The debut album "Triumph" dropped on October 13th, 1976.
Both bands are from Toronto. So is Max Webster who you have never "covered" but you have "heard" because the crowd cheering in Rush's "Spirit of Radio" is actually a recording of a Max Webster crowd.
God.... it was AWESOME to be 13 years old in Toronto in 1979 when all three bands really started hitting their stride. :)
Thanks for finally finding some more great Canadian Rock... and there's lots more if you care to look for it.
    Cheers!

@@bobbrown6603 Glad to see you address this, since I keep seeing it on reaction videos. Bands from this time period especially did have some similar elements in their music, but it wasn't because they influenced each other. It was because they grew up in the same era, listened to the same music and were inspired by a lot of the same bands that existed in the generation before them. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc always figured prominently in the sound of the 1970s bands. What they were able to add or take away from that was what made them unique. He said first off it is about himself, when he was young, listening to music and baseball under his covers in bed with a little transistor radio, but changed the lyrics to a girl based on his mother. She was always listening to music on the radio, and singing around the house, and was a huge influence on him becoming interested in music. In the same interview he discussed Steve Perry asking/complementing him on hitting such high notes effortlessly when they opened for Journey at a stadium show. He also talked about his vocal approach, guitar stuff...playing right, even though he is left-handed. He frankly discussed getting older, and how you have to approach songs differently, as he had turned 70 at that time. Very, very humble and honest guy...great listen...about 18 to 20 minutes long.

In my opinion, it's because their studio albums were shockingly sterile sounding, when compared to their concert presence. I think if they had paid for a big name producer then they would have been among the top five sales in the early 80's. (Like what Martin Birch did for Maiden). @@christophercook1631 Yeah I would love to hear what could be done with the original masters by someone like Terry Brown or Giles Martin. I think Allied Forces is probably the best sounding album of the era, but having gone back and listened to the early studio stuff a lot, I'm with you when you compare it to other 80s rock it just doesn't jump off the record like it should/could. Most of those 80s albums were recorded in Gils own studio, Metalworks, so i think maybe they thought they knew better at the time, though the studio has won a ton of "Recording Studio of the Year" awards over the decades, not sure of the criteria, heh. I'm glad we have the amazing live recordings that we do though! The US Festival DVD is just amazing.

I was there that day, just a few days before I turned 17. My parents were there that day as well and when I asked them what they thought of all the great bands that played that day, my dad told me that he was surprised at how good the singer for The Scorpions was. My mom, who wasn't much of a rock fan (although she liked the Grateful Dead) but had some musical background (unlike my father who only played drums on the steering wheel while driving) said that she was very impress with Rik's guitar solo.
It made perfect sense, the guy is freaky good at both singing and playing guitar. The only thing we had like him in the US at the time was Dave Meniketti from Y&T.
But yeah, I was there in the crowd... absolutely losing my mind because I love this song so much and the positive energy that they convey though their music. Plus, when you're in a crowd of roughly a HALF A MILLION PEOPLE it's easy to get swept up in the moment.
I was very fortunate to attend both US Festivals, they were amazing experience punctuated by incredible live music performances. Triumph was the only band to had the foresight to negotiate the rights to the video of their set in their contract. They were the only act to release a DVD of their set officially. Much of the footage is being made available on YT through historic film preservation folks and some of it has decent sound. Unfortunately for most of the bands, it just shows how much more professional Triumph was. Van Halen made over $4 million that day and their set is unsellable. Hell, it's unwatchable. Even if (like me) you enjoy watching clowns like Diamond Dave (LMFAO) embarrass humanity.
Rik is a force of nature.
