  • We started my AC/DC journey with "Thunderstruck" and Brian Johnson's smokey vocals. Immediately, I was informed that I should have started with Bon Scott and I understand now. His charisma and stylization are so intriguing, so much so that I decided to jump into another one of his classics, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to AC/DC performing "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" for the first time.

Bon Scott was once asked jokingly whether he was the AC or DC in the band. His reply was telling in its symbolism of his role in the band: "Naw, I'm the lightning flash in the middle." ⚡

I actually heard something similar in a John Melloncamp song. It was a backup singer. Let me see if I can remember the song. The song is “Crumblin Down” near the end. It may be Melloncamp doing it. It’s about as close as I have ever heard but it’s just one phrase.

ACDC is notorious for doing songs that people misunderstand. From Wikipedia: [The phrase "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" is an homage to the cartoon Beany and Cecil, which Angus Young watched when he was a child. One of the cartoon's characters was named Dishonest John, who carried a business card that read: "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Holidays, Sundays, and Special Rates." “It was Angus that came up with the song title…" Malcolm Young told Mark Blake. "It was based on a cartoon character that had the phrase as his calling card."]

Every person has at some point fantasized about hurting some deserving person for one reason or another. This song was an instant classic when it came out for a reason. And there's a reason that, while Brian Johnson sounds remarkably similar with Bon's unusual vocals, AC/DC just wasn't the same when he left. Bon was able to play with his vocalizations more, breaking ALL the "rules" of singing, with ease, because it came much more naturally to him. Brian relies heavily of the amplification by the microphone because his voice is much softer, he just doesn't have the same projection.
