Ok- at the risk of falling down a Doctor Who rabbit hole 61 years in the making (this is how long the show has been running) The blue box is the the Doctor's ship which travels in Time and Space - it is disguised as a British Police Box so as not to draw attention to itself when it is standing on a street. In the 1960's (when the show started) these were a common sight on British streets. They were mainly for the police on patrol to keep in touch with their police steation by use of the special phone, but could also be used as a temporary cell to contain a suspect until proper transport arrived to take them to the station. The Public also had access to the phone for emergency calls to the police. The one in Doctor Who is called the TARDIS (standing for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space - it's bigger on the inside than on the outside). I'll stop now, or you'll get a whole essay! If you decide to check out Doctor Who, I would recommend starting with what is often referred to as 'New Who' when it relaunched in 2005 starring Christopher Eccleston. This series was designed to introduce new audiences to the programme, and so is a good starting point. The first episode is Series 1/ Episode 1/ Rose. The Big Issue is an interesting magasine in its own right- but it is made specifically for homeless people to sell on to the public, and they get to keep the profits as was mentioned - much better for all parties than begging. Over the Christmas period every home will have a large tin (plastic tub these days) of either 'Roses' 'Celebrations' 'Heroes' or 'Quality Street' - or a combination of the above. Quality Street is the most old fashioned of these, but is favoured by Grandparents or nostalgia fans. All of them are a selection of individually wrapped mini chocolate bars or other sweets.
Originally the Tardis was meant to have a chameleon circuit which would disguise the Tardis to blend into whatever surroundings it materialized into but the circuit broke and got stuck showing the Tardis as the Blue Police Box. (This was decided on due to the low budget the show had in the beginning and they kept it ever since.)
Police boxes are still dotted around the UK to this day, mostly in major cities. The were used during the 1960s & 70s, by Police officers, who would call the main office to report in/call for backup. When landlines became widespread, the police boxes were discontinued. Nowadays they are mostly converted into pop up shops that sell tea's & coffees. Fun fact, the boxes often looked bigger on the inside that you would expect. This idea was weaved into Doctor Who.
@@darylbradshaw4645 it's ironic you mention respect when you are crying about a non-problem along with not understanding it's not actually a map put up the wrong way. All you types are embarrassing, demanding to be loved and respected while doing the complete opposite.

Always breaking coasters? Do they sell carpet tiles in the U.S.? (Usually for office floors. About 16 inch by 16 inch.) Buy a carpet tile, cut it into four inch squares. Mugs won't slip on them, and they soak up any liquid spilled. Rubber backs protect furniture. They last years.
When you make the trip over here , you should visit Hay-on-Wye, a town full of book shops and they hold a book festival as well with guest author speakers. L ovely place on the welsh border!
From my, (limited), knowledge of the "Big Issue" the homeless people have to pay a certain percentage of the cover price to buy the magazines. Whatever profit they make is theirs to keep. I also seem to remember that it's on a "sale or return" basis.
If you like book shops you would love to visit Hay-on-Wye - which has a literature festival and is the largest second hand book centre in the world with many many bookshops! Its in the county of Powys in Wales on the border with England.
When I was a child, on a Saturday tea time, a little boy from across the road would come to my house to watch Dr who, he would hide behind the sofa as he was frightened, whilst my x4 sisters and brother would watch it
The first iteration of the Tower of London was actually built in 1078 by William the Conqueror after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It’s Keep is of Norman origin and would not have been seen in England before their invasion.
A city today is a huge place, but back in history, London was still a town that would expand as international travel became more common. Most cities in the world began their lives as a village then a town, and kept growing. Trade was often a cause for growth.

The old red telephone boxes used to be situated all over the country even a small village would have a phone box. Many have now become redundant and have been removed although there are still quite a few in London which are for the tourists to have photographs taken. Those in the country that still exist have been turned into mini libraries or are used to house defibrillators When I was little there was a police box at the bottom of the road I lived on Edit. Yes the postage stamp/postal service was invented in the UK. The 1st stamp was issued on 1st May 1840 and was named “The Penny Black” and it featured the head of Queen Victoria

A good way to learn about the RNLI is to watch any episode of BBC's 'Saving Lives at Sea' series which shows real rescues and talks with both the volunteers and those they rescued. Might include anything from people being caught out by the tide, or full scale rescues of ships at sea. The phrase 'Ey up Duk' was a common greeting in Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire (not sure if it's so popular now) - the 'Ey' is pronounced like the letter 'A', the 'u' in 'up' is pronounced as you would the 'oo' in 'hook or 'look' and the same for the 'u' in 'Duk'. the word 'Duk' has nothing to do with ducks, but is a corruption of the word 'Duke'.
Also - and several boxes of tissues will be needed to watch this - there's "The Penlee Lifeboat Disaster - Cruel Sea" which shows just why we hold these RNLI volunteers in such high regard.
Many of the red telephone booths were sold to the public. My brother bought one and he placed it in his garden. Just for the fun. Many are now little books stores, I saw a guy in London recently who had managed to make a barista in one. 😊
The city of London is a square mile within London with separate postcodes of EC1 to EC4. It used to be the centre for newspapers and the financial district but a lot of them have established themselves in Canary Wharf. The City of London also have their own police service which is separate to the metropolitan police who cover the rest of London.
Those Curry sauces are good you can get them in Canada. If you watch Dr Who you need to start from the beginning with the episodes where the Doctor is played by William Hartnell. They are in black and white but then you can know the whole story from the start. The series started in the 1960’s. There was a British tv series called Lifeboat about the RNLI.

The man who designed the red phone boxes for the UK took his inspiration for the shape of the top from the top of Dulwich Picture gallery.. which is in the pretty suburb of 'Dulwich, London.. actually in Dulwich village. I lived there for several years. the gallery was originally formed form a private collection of art works collection on behalf of a price or king of Poland. Due to disruption in Poland they were never sent there. the #gallery was built to house them. The shape of part of the roof is just like the later phone boxes. The gallery is affiliated with the National Gallery which is in Trafalgar Square, in Central Londo .

Great show again Steve and Lindsay, I love to see your reaction to what people send you. I love how it's morphed from just Steve, to you all as a family. Is Sophia on this 100 day clean living thing with you both? You'll have to hide the goodies as you don't want her to eat your favourites before you get a chance! You definitely need a shelf or two behind you, as I bet your house is overrun by things from overseas lol. Cauliflower pizza sounds disgusting! 😂😂
Hi Lindsey and Steve, if the tea cosy fits Sophies head there's no problem with her borrowing it from time to time as I used to luv running around the house with the tea cosy on my head when i was little 😅
Cadbury Roses chocolate , and Quality street chocolates used to come in tins, and once upon a time you would get quite a few. Either/Or are everyones Christmas fave, as in, you always got one tin of them as a pressie to chew on through Christmas. They are a pretty contentious subject now as they have lowered the amount you get over the years, seriously, you used to get a boat load, and now, you'd be lucky to get five of the buggers (I jest in the former, but it feels like it), oh, and they replaced the tin with a plastic tub, and now I think they have started to use a cardboard affair, which is fair enough in regards to recycling, but the tins were dead handy to store things in, such as stuff in the shed like nails, to sewing kits, right across to cakes and biscuits... Everyone, literally everyone had a use for the tin when the chocolates were gone. So yeah, the size of the container is a pretty serious subject in the UK when we start talking about it, so much so, it draws up disgust... Up there with someone pushing in at a queue! :D
Before two way radios, the real blue police box was used to communicate back to base as well as maybe store a single prisoner inside for pickup by a wagon. The inside apparently contained a small desk and chair they could sit at to write a report. The light on top could be turned on from the station to alert a passing police officer they needed to talk to them and to pick up the phone to call the station. The Red English K2 (Kiosk 2) phone box was designed in 1926. Only 1,700 of them where made as they are mostly made from cast iron and were expensive to make. Of those 1700 made a bit over 600 of them got imported to New Zealand starting in around 1927. A small number can still be found in New Zealand. In New Zealand while the body of the box was the English red the roof was painted green. The "Bond Bug" is the name of the car. It was produced initially at the Bond Cars Ltd factory, but subsequently at Reliant's factory when they took over the company and is a predecessor to the bigger Reliant Robin.
Dr Who is a PHENOMENAL watch. Really great drama, some of it is for younger viewers but really deals with complex issues and themes that is more adult too. I LOVE Dr.Who...David Tenant and Peter Capaldi really bring a grit and darkness to the role!
The 9th and 10th doctors series, brilliant, you must watch. And the Paul McGann film, can’t remember his number. All well worth watching. The early ones just feel really dated. But those ones have a very subtle humour and excellent storylines.
Great vidio my family had a robin reliant car we went on holiday there is 6 of us all when we were kids we went camping we took tents we had our luggage food mum and dad and 4 of us kids it was so cramped in the 3wheel car but we had a great time. Love from uk. Xx
As you come out of the underground station, at Tower Hill! Somewere near there! Was, at one time, the Real spot that executions were held! I know some special ones, were held in the tower too! When I used to live near a village called Mousehole! Pronounced Mouzeole I used to be near to a lifeboat that was called the Solomon Brown! tragically it got destroyed going to to a rescue! It was also a lifeboat that used to have its rudder set automatically set to starboard! That six penny bit used to be wrapped up in greaseproof paper and put into a Christmas pudding!
Steve & Lindsey we have one of those red phone box right outside our house. Hope you're both well. Brilliant vids so keep on doing them love from Derbyshire uk
We had sow the other week as well :) was here for a day then therain came and melted it all, but we also had a few really bitterly cold days just after that, lots of car windows freezing over and such. With the curry sauces, you want to get yourself some onion, maybe a few bell peppers (the red/green/yellow peppers you get on things like pizza) and some meat.. any meat will do, chicken, tukey, lamb, beef, pork, doesnt matter if its diced, chopped or whatever. cook all the meat and vegies then throw in the packet of sauce and give it a good stir until its all piping hot, then serve on a bed of rice.. YUMMY! And if you can find them, get some naan breads or at a push a pitta bread will do (its just a small naan bread) and use that for dipping. Yes Dr who is "somewhat " about time travel, he is a time traveller, but his Tardis (the blue box) can travel through space and time, so he can go anywhere at any time. But he has a fondness for the uk so he spends a lot of time here.. The episodes are not so much about time travel just more about having adventures, fixing problems, helping people.. but all done by a man who travels across time and space. If you want to start watching it, i would suggest starting at the 2005 reboot which was when it came back to TV after 16 years. The stuff before that will seem a little dated and you probably wont get into it if you started with those. So its better to start with the reboot stuff and if you like that, then look into the older episodes afterwards. And yes the police box was a public telephone with a direct link to the local police station, it could be used by the public or by an officer if he needed to call for more officers. They used to be made from cast iron at first then made from wood, but they were actually painted red not blue, it was only after the success of Dr who in the 60's that real police boxes started to be changed to blue.. The "Bond bug" was another 3 wheeler also made by the reliant company. The Big Issue is a magazine/ street newspaper that homless people can go and get a bunch of copies of , then try to sell them to the public to earn a bit of extra money to help feed themselves or get shelter for the night. It is actually the worlds most widely circulated street newspaper. You can often see a homeless guy stood on a corner bellowing out "Big issue." Or like in the case of our town, some lady from a different country living over here. And from a good 100 meters or so away you can hear "oooooooo big issue" While it is good the homeless get a way to earn a few extra pounds, a lot of people won't buy it siply becasue they dont trust the guy will use it for food or shelter and more likely booze or drugs. I've bought it a few times, but often i will just give them the £1 and say "keep the mag sell it to the next guy." The Cadburies Roses, its a "tin" (plastic tub) of sweets, while you can get them all year round, they are traditionally bought or given out at christmas. Some poeple might buy you a tin of butter shortbread or somethng and others might get you a tub of Roses (or Celebrations, or Quality street) They are chocolate filled with different things, my fave is the pink round ones (strawberry cream filling). I used to live just down the road from the Cadburies factory, it was both great and a curse, 75% of the time its great, smelling warm chocolate all the way across town, but in the hot summer months there is nothing worse than the smell of burnt chocolate...
if u want to see somthing thats a little different check out the Glasgow christmas markets, that was my childhood city. it was always the 1 thing that made last minute xmas shopping with my mum not a complete headache
Hello Steve and your beautiful wife. Lindsay don't worry, come and live here I could promise you after a week you wouldn't want Cadbury chocolate for a long time. My mother was a chocolate lover and got her dream job in a chocolate factory packing boxes of chocolates. On her first day she asked her boss how they stopped girls on the line eating the chocolates. He told her she could eat as many as she liked. After a week she never ate another chocolate. I always had a sweet tooth when younger and now if I fancy something I buy it, but one bite tells me I don't really want it. I would rather have some nuts and pieces of fruit. I do like dark bitter chocolate, but after a couple I've had enough. I love sesame hulver and marzipan though. Nowadays in this woman's declining years I treat myself if I really want something. Take care all and well done for sticking to your detox, it really shows in Linsay's face. Thank you for visiting.❤❤❤

I started my version 8 weeks ago as I have a lack of mobility due to disability and weight creeping on and on.Im losing 2Lbs approx a week so I'm pleased, slow progress but progress is progress.I've prepared all my family that I want no chocolates etc bought for me as gifts ,I haven't got a problem I'f they eat high calorific things in front of me as my cravings are in control but I'm not going to blow all my hard work away just for Christmas. It must be so hard for you 2 having all the choc sent to you etc, though I know darling Sophia will enjoy them and you just have 1 or 2 in the hols xxx
Don't forget some of those classic Telephone boxes are in some wild areas, when it comes to weather. The same box on a London street had to survive half way up a Scottish mountain :-). The Police Box is known as the Tardis in Dr Who, they were for Police officers to call into the station and there are quite a few still in situ around Glasgow and Edinburgh. If you're going to give Dr Who a chance start with the Christopher Ecclestone reboot, always worth throwing in a few early classic episodes with each Dr though to get an idea how it started.
when I joined the Met police in he 70s we were still issued with keys to the Police Boxes.. but were warned there was only one left still operational.. on the Met's side of Blackfriars bridge. When I was at Hendon training there was a huge amount of them, all lined up in rows. that is where they put the when they took them out. lol.. over the years.. going back for different courses during my career they disappeared. Then. .there was a parking area for Water cannon I think. the old white ones. never used. if they weren't water cannon.. memory fails me.... they were definitely for use in riots. That was in the 80s or 90s. As I said. never ever used on the British public as far as I know anyway.
The City of London is the square mile or so which encompasses the financial district. On a weekday its extremely busy but i once went on a Saturday to do some datacentre work, it was virtually deserted, even the Pizza Express closed after lunchtime. Very strange when you consider how crowded London proper is.
Some Dr Who info. Police Boxes like that used to be around London so police could lock people up and call for backup/transport. The Dr Who Space/Time ship, the TARDIS, has a chameleon circuit that disguises it so it will blend in and not be noticed. The chameleon circuit broke after the TARDIS took that form and has been that way since. TARDIS stands for Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space.
The Police box was used for making a phone call to base for report situation. In the case of the Dr. Who one is it is called the 'Tardis' and is used for time travel by the Doctor. The 'In the morning, ugly' quote is from W.C. Fields to Mae West in the movie 'It's a Gift'. It is also claimed Churchill used it, doubtful as it is. The 'City of London' is within London.
They also functioned as mini police stations for officers to perform small tasks and potentially detain suspects for brief periods in emergency situations.

Fun fact, the boxes often looked bigger on the inside that you would expect. This idea was weaved into Doctor Who.
I love how your eyes light up when you see Cadburys😂😂

From my, (limited), knowledge of the "Big Issue" the homeless people have to pay a certain percentage of the cover price to buy the magazines. Whatever profit they make is theirs to keep. I also seem to remember that it's on a "sale or return" basis.
If you like book shops you would love to visit Hay-on-Wye - which has a literature festival and is the largest second hand book centre in the world with many many bookshops! Its in the county of Powys in Wales on the border with England.

Those in the country that still exist have been turned into mini libraries or are used to house defibrillators
When I was little there was a police box at the bottom of the road I lived on
Edit.

I so enjoy and learn from your videos. You two are an adorable couple! ❤

The city of London is a square mile within London with separate postcodes of EC1 to EC4. It used to be the centre for newspapers and the financial district but a lot of them have established themselves in Canary Wharf. The City of London also have their own police service which is separate to the metropolitan police who cover the rest of London.
I really love you two... From a Brit living in Italy 😊

Quality Street still comes in tins today. The size of them though, that's another matter.
@ well that’s news to me because for donkeys I’ve only ever had or seen the plastic tubs, which just are’nt the same
Before two way radios, the real blue police box was used to communicate back to base as well as maybe store a single prisoner inside for pickup by a wagon.
Xx
That brought back memories, my Father had an Austin 7, us 3 kids mum and dad used to squeeze into it.

Cadbury’s Roses are usually in a blue box. The factory can release factory packs that are for direct sale.
We also have had several days of snow. 🇬🇧
Our village had a police box back in 1960's.

I've bought it a few times, but often i will just give them the £1 and say "keep the mag sell it to the next guy."
The Cadburies Roses, its a "tin" (plastic tub) of sweets, while you can get them all year round, they are traditionally bought or given out at christmas.

Start Doctor Who as far back as possible but enjoy the classic era before you start watching the new era and just stop when Capaldi degenerates.
That date is incorrect. The Tower of London was founded toward the end of 1066. 🙂

The Bond Bug was made by Reliant (as in Robin) as a sporty car.
The Bond Bug is a small British two-seat, three-wheeled automobile which was designed by Tom Karen of Ogle Design for Reliant Motor Company.
