Transforming Storage Shelf / Workbench - Small Space Organization
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 май 2023
- Have storage issues? Let's fix that! This heavy-duty mobile transforming shelf can hold sixteen 18Q storage boxes, your larger "awkward" tools, or can be moved to where you need it and be used as a workbench/table! And the best part... as a shelf, it only takes up 2' x 3' of space.
I originally built this as a mobile workstation for your heaviest tools... but then realized that it can be used for so much more!
*IMPORTANT: All building material has different weight limits. Make sure to test your shelves and structure before loading it.
Check all lock nuts after each use to make sure none have loosened.
Place the heaviest item on the second shelf from the bottom and lighter items on the top two shelves to keep it from tipping.
The moving parts can cause injury to fingers and arms if not used correctly. Do not stand or climb on shelves.*

Hey Matthew
You're awesome. Where are the plan for your bench shelf system?😊
Very cool. It would be neat if the planer sat a little lower so the other shelves would be an outfeed table.
It is now, wasn't showing a link for Etsy earlier, just everything else
Your videos has been an inspiration to me . One of your followers love from Botswana
Thanks! I have them linked in this thread actually. It says "Etsy Shop"
I am 62 and a female. I took your plans and made my own shelf it's wonderful. I'm so happy and surprised I really did it.
I am so blown away right now. My husband is an above the knee amputee, and our biggest problem has been figuring out a way to line up all equipment without taking up the entire floor space. This is the solution. He will be able to work and move equipment without any stress to his body or help from anyone. This is amazing. Thank you!!
I'm honored to know that one of my builds will help solve an issue that comes with being an amputee... and have so much respect for him for not letting it keep him from doing what he loves.
Exactly Matthew I tell someone people don’t understand how life changes when one loses normal things I do often took for granted without even realizing I was until the day I woke up could t move 16 yrs later I’m somewhat mobile with orthopedic equipment
I hope it really works for you.
Excuse my black humour (I'm a Dr)... When I read this the phrasing first made me imagine your husband being 2 separate lower legs - the rest being amputated :P.
As an injured retiree myself I appreciate the frustration of imposed limitations that your husband didn't have ... and then did. I hope he and you can build this and he can enjoy doing a hobby without having to be working around his amputation.
@@michaelrobinson9643 I believe you meant to say dark humor not black humor 😅
Two thing I really appreciate about this video. 1st, no loud music, and the instructor doesn't yell at the audience. 2nd, You've simplified a mystifying project. Showing the mistakes isn't a bad thing either. We all make them and most of us learn from them. Thanks and keep up the good work.
YES! I get so tired of bad background music
I swear, Matt's voice and mannerisms makes him the Bob Ross of wood working!
You assume my floor will stay clear enough to fold the table down once I save all of that space.
Me: *puts something that's too big to fold the table back up onto it, followed by lots of small stuff ontop of it* huh, wow.
Thanks for keeping the "oops" moments in your videos. I feel your pain! Same thing happens to me too often!! Great build!!!
I would love to make this for my son to use as a dining table. He has a small apartment and this would be perfect.
I am building this for my Gozney Pizza oven. I can easily store it in the shed and have counter space when wheeled out and lowered. Brilliant design.
Matthew Peach is by far one of the best woodworking channels out there, because he provides such value with his videos. The hero we all need!!!
This is very true, great inspiration for me who is wanting to get into woodworking! 🎊😬
Brilliant thinking looks great
Thank you so much for your kind words @mathenard... Just trying to do what we all should do. Share knowledge.
@Ned Kelly naw, Batman sucks at woodworking.
you have no idea what you're talking about. This is base level stuff that real woodworkers don't take seriously.
I'm going to be honest, I made it about 2 minutes into this video before I had to pause and share it. This is a genius and revolutionary idea. For us with small shops, I see this being a huge hit. Great job!
Thanks so much! I put a ton of work into this one. 3 prototypes and my sanity lol. Hope it helps!
Me too
@Matthew Peech not finding on etsy shop...maybe need one of the kids to do the searching fir me?
Matthew this is a great idea,I can think of several uses for multiples of this, only thing missing to pair with it is a mobile wood storage to go along with it that stores your stray boards or plywood sheets
@@chrisbrown456 great idea. Definitely saves space
"...and if you think I've earned a subscribe..." Hell yeah, you've earned a subscribe.
I don't even have a shop anymore, but I want to make this.
My only negative is that if you fully load each shelf, you don't have a table when you lower it down. You still have neatly organized equipment that's easy to reach for shorter people like me! You can move everything off the shelves, use the table, and put it all back on, but I'm mentally problem solving a locking lazy susan style rotating shelf and stackable table/shelf so you can just leave everything on its shelf and move the table to whichever one you're using. Definitely a new subscriber. I've seen a few I really liked, but this one bumped it over. Thanks for sharing this!
Good idea, position each piece so a separate rolling table could be connected to the side next to which ever tool is needed to prevent having to move other tools. That was first thing I seen
If you had buckets or drawers held under the flat surfaces, it would work for both storage and a workspace. But removing items when the table is flat would be difficult.
@dhiltonp drawers under the top and bottom shelf possibly? Pull them out from the ends when it's a table? Only they would have to be shallow right?
Or an angled drop down shelf with push release for the 2nd shelf from the top?
This is what the internet should be all about, not politics, not spreading hate, not stupid conspiracy theories... but this!
It is. You just have to choose what you view. We are all affected by everything that we see, hear and read. That is why we must be selective.
Oh I would love this for my kitchen. That heavy mixer is horrible. Love the wheels so can move it. Now all I need is somebody to make it for me and maybe make a better kitchen so it is usable for this old crippled lady.
When I get to heaven I am gonna be looking for someone to teach me all this stuff. St Joseph set me up with some appointments please. Woodworking has always been my dream to do.
I have to admit- this is genius. My wife is going to be your new best friend after I make a few of these for my tools/ supplies. You are the man!
I appreciate that you leave all the "Boo Boo's" that happen in the shop in your videos. We all have them :)
I see a lot of nonsense come my way but this .... top 5 video of the year so far. Great quality, no nonsense, and I'm glad tomorrow is the weekend so I can go make one of these!
RUclips algorithm brought me to you. I'm hooked amd subscribed.
This is just what I need to build. Next weekend or two. Plans are perfect. Thank You Matthew. Keep them coming.
Enjoy!
You're the best, don't ever change. I'm a 72 year old carpenter and very impressed with your skills. You have a mechanical imagination.
Coolest ever build. My wife saw the beginning and now I have 3 to build for her laundry/pantry room. Great job 👏
Just converted the garage. This would be great for my wife's quilting supplies
Thank you... and sorry for adding to the list lol.
That's awesome, laundry room it a great usage idea, too! Down for folding, up for storage!
Im not even a carpenter or craftsman but I’m intrigued
This is such a great idea, that i forgot to thumbs up! Apparently, with 1.2 MILLION VIEWS, and only 43k likes, many many others have the same problem! This is what i need! Thank you Matthew! I love how you explain things! Peace!
Dudeeeee my hubby needs this and is glued to your video right now. I need one a bit smaller for the kitchen and my craft room! How have we lived without this. Thank you
Watching you drop things and reach for things that aren't there, like I do, makes me feel better about the dumb stuff I do. Thank you for sharing!
😂 it happens to us all
The world works with people like this. Let's re-define essential!
Love your voice tone, your gadgets and your approach in this video with no jokes, no “stickers”, not forcing to be funny and no flag on the background. Straight to the point, explaining it nice and easy, going over your mistakes and explaining ( no mansplaining) your logic behind your decisions. And best of all, great creations. Cheers.
When I originally saw the idea I was drawn to its genius. As folks downsize, storage becomes a quick dilema in need of a solution. When I realized you provided a complete build tutorial, it lets me know there's still hope that everything can still be alright when teachers gift us with wisdom. Thank you for this.
😅😮😊.
😮p
I made it to 1:06 before I paused and ordered the plans - as an M.E. I could have figured this out fairly quickly, but someone this creative deserves to be paid. I had already purchased lumber to build a “tower” for my “portable” bench tools (planer, table saw, miter saw, Foreman) and just yesterday was in the shop pondering the best way to build it. But this is so much better!
Thank you so much for the support
No bull, no hype, just honest woodworking with a very unique and useful project. Subscribed after watching 5 minutes.
I need one for my future work shop and I think I will practice by making one for my sewing room. Would be nice to have a big cutting table on demand 😃
Edit 🐝. I agree with one of the other comments, like the fact that there’s no loud music and you talk to us not at us and show your mistakes. We learn from mistakes 😅
I've been semi-quietly following you for a while now. When i first found your channel, I was hooked.
Story time: I've always had this weird fascination with wood working and I never knew why. Even when I was a little girl, wood working just intrigued me. I would sneak into my dad's garage, grab some scrap wood, a box of nails and hammer and just go to town all by my lonesome lolol. I remember trying to teach myself to use a hand saw, too (as a parent, this scares me to think about 😬). I was probably around 8 at the time (same age as my child is now!).
Many years later, I found out my maternal grandfather actually had a woodworking shop in our little hamlet! I remember seeing the little vacant building as a kid, thinking it was so cool and wondering what it once was. Soon after, it was demolished.
My grandfather retired from woodworking and became a substitute bus driver for our school district. He later had a stroke and had to retire from driving. A few years after that, his dementia kicked in and about a year after that, he passed away. I had a few items that were made by him but I lost them in a fire. Now, I have nothing left and it breaks my heart.
I'll be 35 soon and am still working on building up my tool collection. I have most of the handheld power tools I wanted and am working on the larger items now, like a table saw and a planer.
Not a super exciting story but it means a lot to me to know that there was a reason behind my woodworking fascination for all those years as a little girl who'd rather be in the garage or outside and not inside playing house.
Anyway, the reason for sharing this is that your channel brings back those memories and gets me excited to try to tackle some "real" woodworking projects 🤗 So, thank you! 😊
A touching story 🥰 If you can think it ,you can do it👍👍👍GO GIRL Best wishes from UK 🇬🇧
This is very cool.
I might take apart a rolling storage bench I have and replace it with two of these.
It will take a bit of thought.
My shop is my garage and at certain times of year.
Two vehicles need to be able to quickly be parked inside in case of hail.
When needing perfectly straight lumber.
Buy 2x8s
Build a table saw guide and cut it down to size.
2x4s and 2x6s these days are cut from the smallest trees as evidenced by the rough edges found on both sides.
Cut the 2x8 down from each side to the center.
This will give the newly created 2x4 the most strength.
Depending on the size of the offcuts they can be used as 1x2 or 2x2 material.
As an aussie it all sounded like gibberish but looked friggen awesome 😂 i wanna convert all of this to real measurements and give it a go
OK, I originally clicked on this thinking, "dumb". Then, about 15 seconds into the video, I thought, "smart". I think I'll add this to my list of stuff to build for my garage. I'm about cubed out with space utilization and need a solution that is flexible like this. Nice job.
Must have....
NOW! Super cool idea, matthew, I'm going to buy the plans and build this.
Clever design; well done.
Thank you!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking As a suggestion, you might want to consider adding locking, caster wheels to the two legs that fold down, which would make your storage shelf into more of a mobile cart when the wheels were in the unlocked position.
I nominate your channel for 'Best Design on RUclips.' This is highly functional and can be built with simple materials and tools.
A shelf like this needs to be made for all the kitchen appliances you don't always use, so they can be stored but also easily accessible
That’s exactly what I thought!!
It wouldn’t have to be this heavy duty for air fryers and kitchen aid mixers!! 🤣👍🏼😂
Awesome build! I wanted to comment on your channel. It is very watchable. You speak in a clear, calm voice, no yelling. You fast forward through the repetitious parts and having funny parts, you don't try to turn it into a comedy channel. Well done, a lot of creators could follow your blueprint and RUclips would be better off for it.
Fantastic idea and build video. Only suggestion I would make/change is to countersink the screws holding the tops on using flat top screws, so that you have a perfectly flat working surface.
This channel reminds me of an interaction I had years ago with a kid.
He was blown away with the car I had built and said I made it look easy.
Well kid, with $200,000 worth of tools and equipment, it should be easier than it was. 😂
This guy makes it look easy, then I started pricing tools and equipment.
I will stick with building cars, its cheaper and cleaner with a bigger profit.
Dude does nice work though.
Love seeing things being built that i only dreamed about! Now I know it can be done.
Yes! You’ve got this!
Another great one Mr. Peech! I love your channel. I bet you don't even know how many people you have just helped. God bless you brother!
Thanks so much. And the more the better. :)
This guy sounds like a courteous, humble, patient, mellow Billy Bob Thornton
As a plumbing instructor and someone who can work with his hands (mediocre wood worker) I actually need this. Since my lab space has been reduced (lack of interest from high schoolers... sad) this right here is not only perfect for storage but also instructional purposes. Such a great idea. Now to keep my wife from seeing this channel or I'm gonna have more projects than I care for.
😂 lol.
This is FANTASTIC!
You do a great job “teaching” us how to do this. I’m a teacher, so I know when I see a very good teacher.
I appreciate your detailed presentation.
Thank you very much. I’ve always loved to teach so doing this gives me an opportunity I couldn’t have ever imagined.
Hooked me with the project BUT I love the video sequence. You sold the project first. You demonstrated how it works before you jumped into making it. That is the way to do it. Keep on!
After watching this video- I had to start following you and hope others will do the same. Great job sir
Great design, Matthew! Have you considered, for the swing-out support legs: attach them to the outboard side of the vertical legs for the top shelf, with a spacer to clear the main arms. That way, the support legs will already be in the upright position without needing to rely on gravity or manually ensuring that they are deployed.
Seems like an obvious and easy to implement design decision. I'm wondering why he didn't do it that way.
I was thinking the same thing, I was about to comment on it until I saw yours.
Unbelievable. Bowing down to you once again for using that super creative/analytical brain of yours and then putting it out there for the benefit of your fellow woodworkers. This project is game-changing for people like me. The world needs more humans like you.
Thank you for your kind words... I'm just doing what we all should be doing. Share what we know... keep no "secrets"... and support each other. :)
I’m an esthetician and struggle with small carts they sell to fit our equipment. This is a game changer. Now just need to figure out how to make it dressier for spa rooms!
You could make it smaller for a heavy Viking Sewing Machine with storage for a studio or small apartment with fancy trimming
(etc . . . ). I love your creativity which is impressive. APPLAUSE !
I love how you broke down and explained all the steps. And I appreciate you leaving in the little shop bloopers: it reminds me that professional woodworkers are human too!
What an amazing design. Thanks Matt
This video was a random YT recommendation, and I don't really do woodwork, but this is one of the most handy things to build I've seen on here.
Great video and explained in a way even an inexperienced woodworker can build one of these.
Thank you!
That's a multi million dollar idea! Absolutely genius 👏🏽 🙌🏽 👌 👍🏽 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!
This is brilliant. I really like that you designed it so anyone can make it with tools most of us already have.
Thanks! And we all start with basic tools and have the same problem from day one. Storage and organization.
This is crazy smart. The cantilevered design, plus the gas hinges make it super easy to lift up and down. I'm pretty short, so storing things up high requires running up and down a ladder, but I think I'm going to adapt this to have upper cabinets on top that I can fold down to reach. Another home run Mr. Peech!
I was about to ask the design/engineered name for the type of movement. Cantilevered. Thank you.
❤ OMG! Your idea just solved my kitchen appliance issue. Ty very much. You are so awesome. Also I have learned a lot from your channel. Keep it real & have an awesome day.
Wasn’t sure what I was seeing at first- COOL PROJECT!
Making one as soon as I get 1/2 a day free! Great build!
Hey, I built this over the weekend. Overall blown away by the idea. The only thing I did differently was to add some reinforcements to the side pieces. They have to take the full weight of the shelves and cope with lateral forces as the shelf transforms as well. I screwed some iron bar across the sides and now it's solid. Awesome build, awesome video.
This is what I was just thinking, adding a few anngle iron edges with help keep the design from twisting under weight.
how much did it end up costing you?
do you have a picture of this? I am a visual person & can't picture where/how you added the bracing?
Not sure what you mean by “iron bar”, I too would like a little more info on your suggestion or even a photo
@@tmlhkyfnI’m the exact same way. I built this just by looking at it, but I can’t for the life of me figure out where they are talking about putting the metal braces
Крутой верстак и хорошая мастерская - мужик, ты реально крут! Респект👍👍👍!
If anything I can can see this ad being something HUGE. Game changers is an understatement. I see kitchen shelf space possibilities too. If anyone makes a penny off of this you deserve something for it. This is too good I need to make 5 or more my self.
I would recommend using double 3/4 inch or triple 1/2 inch plywood glued together for the arms is would a lot stronger. Even make a ¼ inch plywood gusset screwed to the arms on both sides.
Nevertheless this is a great idea. Also I could see a folding tables attached to the sides with hinges for additional top space to allow extended out feed and/or in feed tables the table could be use together or individually. And in the storage position make like door and provide protection to the sides. I know thus will add weight ot foldable frames so you can drop in tops. Or mount removeable in and out out feeds the table using some kind of L hooks/bracket that goes into [ looking loop screw to the frame to receive the L hook for quick removal. That self then could be storage on the sides with fold up legs with levelers on the bottom of the legs.
To drill the holes in the arm make a jig so holes will be straight and the same to prevent racking on the main pivot points use bearings for easy lift and drop the table onto place. A pvc tube or copper pipe who's inside diameter near the same size as the bolts used at the pivot points reducing the wear and tear on the wooded holes that the bolts go through the wood.
I love the idea of feed tables! Thank you.
I also used 3/4 plywood glued and screwed together. This creates incredible strength. Great plans
This video should do good for a long time. I was up at 5:30am and usually on Sunday mornings when I wake up there’s a video already. I watched the 3 picket planter video while waiting for this one and this was well worth the wait. Now I have to decide if I’m still going to make 2 flip tables or this and just 1 flip table, and there is a chance I won’t be needing a flip table at all. Good stuff 👍🏼.
Thanks so much for supporting (and waiting for) the video and channel.
That is a SICK IDEA bro!! Thanks for sharing your design!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dude a kitchen island. My wife wants an island in our kitchen and something like this would be awesome. It would only have three shelves and it would have to look a little fancier. I think the proportions would be a bit different but this would be pretty neat.
Great idea! I’ve been thinking about all the different ideas this could be used for.
Absolute genius!!! I'm about to do a massive shop reorg so the timing on this couldn't be more perfect! Thank you once again Matthew.
Hi I love watching your videos . Im sure if my husband were in this world he would be making this for his shop. He really enjoyed working with wood like you do . Thanks for all the time you take to help others learn things . May God continue to bless you and your family.
I bet he’s got an awesome shop now! My father in law passed away last year and my wife has had conversations in her dreams with him in his amazing woodworking shop in heaven!
Brilliant!
Just one thing I should add, is, if you can put the struts in the other way up, so the seal stays lubricated and they hold their gas ‘charge’ longer. Just a tip I pick up from a dude who recharges gas struts for living.
i can easily see someone using this for board games and the like, nice build
A) This is awesome.
B) See above.
C) If you only wanted to make one of these and had shelving in your shop / pallet rack layout.... you could make these hit the heights of your shelves so you could flip this up and slid them off onto their shelf and roll over to get the next set of tools.
D) If you used them as indicated in C, I'd call them "The Peech Reach"
This may be one of the coolest and most useful projects I’ve ever seen. Bravo Matthew! 👍
I considered making individual rolling carts for my drill press, belt/spindle sander, scroll saw, etc... but now I'm thinking this will work better!! You're awesome!
Your idea is going to save us all not only space but medical bills as we dont have to stretch ourselves to pull and push stuff all around, Thank you for sharing all the details.
Definitely going to be one of my first builds in the new shop. Thanks so much for putting this together. Your videos make me so excited to build stuff, I can hardly wait to finish the video before going and getting my tools!
As always, great stuff! Thank you!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
@8:50 As a complete amateur I really appreciate you calling out a safety tip like that. First video I've watched of yours and subbed.
Молодец !

Great idea Matthew, and thanks for sharing that information with the rest of us. As a "garage shop" owner, it will make a huge difference in providing a lot of storage and safe work area for using my planer too.
Love it ! You should have your on cable show. Have watched every video you have made and cant wait for the next one
Shelves, table and wheels all in one? Yep, this is the shed GOAT.
This is just like the answer....42!
Joke aside...this is brilliant,just what i need,thanx man🕵️👍
Matthew, you’re brilliant! I have my planer on a rolling cart that is just a little bit bigger than the planer itself-and it’s a tipping hazard. Love this idea. I’m off to order the plans. Thanks!
You never cease to amaze me Matthew. This is an awesome build. I'm going to do one for my shop, then modify it a bit and make one for the house, non-mobile, but part of a built-in.
Nice! Would be great for pantry or closet!
Awesome build and not a fence picket in sight 😉😁
I want those 2 1/2 inch screws and I want them now. Oh wait I have them and are one of my favorite screws. Oh wait, can I say that!
very good idea, I'll make one in the future, thank you. I'm a french man and I'm a new fan
Welcome!
Wow, this is what I’ve been needing in my shop! Thanks again for engineering and taking the time to show us this build!! 👊🏽
Right!
Amazing! What a great project!
Thanks!
Thanks for the plans. Received them yesterday and got it done today. I found the instructions to be easy.
One improvement I could suggest: For the support leg, have something that sticks up and screws into the L of the upper shelf (with a spacer support block in between). That way it would always stay in line with the top shelf (i.e., vertical).
And if you want them to be able to move out of the way, simply have a stay pin on either side: in the block on the L when you want the support, or into the other part when you want it out of the way.
I just found your channel; your narration is as smooth as silk. This is something I may be able to use. For years I'd wondered how the sawblade could have nipped off the end of my finger behind the fence while my hand held a board against the miter fence. Years later, while cutting a miter on a piece of casing, the cutoff hit the blade and embedded itself into the wall behind the saw. The noise immediately made me realize it wasn't the sawblade at all. Keep your finger well away from the travel of those flying pieces, and perhaps you'll avoid a trip to the ER.
Absolutely awesome! Currently building myself a 16' x 24' shop right now. This will make a great addition. Thanks Matthew.😁
No worries and ty!
This is ingenious and you are really generous to teach us this brilliant weight bearing, space saving piece. What I appreciated most were the little bits where you reached twice for a pencil that wasn’t there or other small mistakes. They happen to all of us and it is a good reminder that we are not perfect. Just move on!
I love your channel! This build is awesome! My husband and I both do wood work, but I am not strong enough to move things all the time plus space is always an issue. This table/storage build is perfect! Thank you!!!
Nice!
I've thought of doing something similar as a wall mounted fold down, but I like the idea of being able to roll it around, and convert to a table, even better.
The one thing I would change, at least for those that are equipped to batch out identical parts, would be making each of the L parts out of 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood laminated together.
