Could you also do a beginners intro to woodworking Playlist? For example, PPE, beginners tools, how to read a ruler, and how to make a box...ect. Things you'd teach young children. I try to show my kids these concepts, but in the Era of RUclips, they don't retain the info unless they can pause, rewind, and rewatch a video while they practice.
Out of all the You Tubers You are in my Top 5 . I love the fact that you show or give a detailed idea on how to make those products from the Big Box Stores and choose items that new wood workers can build. Thank You
You & your kids& wife are amazing. One thing I have trouble with is, you make it look so easy. I've had 2 strokes. My hands & brain work so much slower, but I love trying to make them. Thanks so much. God Bless you all 🙏..
This is so incredibly simple! I'm not that good at woodworking and I made a couple this weekend with wood left over to make a couple more. Super easy! Awesome tutorial vid!
I've been thinking about making crates lately, but with an upcoming craft event, I've been too busy to figure out the cheapest and easiest way to do them while makimg them sturdy enough. Thanks for figuring that one put for me. 😊
Matt, thank you so much for your time . . . . . . what a gift you have . . . . . . and how you so unselfishly share it. I haven't been tuned into your videos for too long of a time maybe a month or so off and on but man of man do I appreciate them.
I love the inspiration you bring to the RUclips. Your encouragement, ideas and the comments that follow by your subscribers are incredible. Thank you for keeping these video new and fresh and mentoring people. It's a nice change to see in this ugly world.
Great work and I could actually understand most of your accent without having to slow your video down at all! Can't wait to make some crates. Love your shop!
I made a bunch of these a couple of years ago for my garden. Menards in the Midwest sells the lathing strips by the 50 piece bundle. Just chopped up some discount 1x material and made them.
Never seen the technique on the table saw before when you were ripping strips off the 2 x 4. I don't have a great outfeed table set up so I'm gonne give that technique a go later today after church. Thanks Matt!
Hey there Matt, just want to say thankyou for all your advice and knowledge you give so freely. I just secured my 1st contract with a greenhouse for the planter boxes and garden trellis. This is a commission sale contract. I shattered my ankle in 2021 and this has allowed me to feel like I am once again contributing to my family...thankyou for the inspiration to move forward.
Another good one! They can be painted or stained any color red white and blue for the 4th of July, black and orange for Halloween, red and white for Christmas, and I like the idea of building shelves and stuff with them.
Hey Matt I just want to give a shout out to you for being inspirational, Ive been watching a lot of your videos and its really helped me get more ideas and confidence in my own woodworking adventure. Your instructions are easy to follow and you explain things very well. Keep up the great videos!
Hey Matt the second type of crate can be simple improved to be stackable. Just put one strip less on the bottom and let the corners stick a bit out of the bottom. Therefore you get some space on the top end where the protruding corners at the bottom can nicely fit in. If you have multiple crates you can stack them securly. Sorry if i can't describe it right in english, but i believe you can figure out what i am trying to explain...
I've had the idea to make crates like these. I was going to source pallets and break them apart to get free wood. Thanks for showing me that actually, economically pallets make no sense when you can get so much out of a 2x4. I really enjoy your videos.
thanks. good jig use. currently have to get some stainless fasteners for the gun so I can use some recovered redwood and cedar for making a trellis. and fast. vines are a growin. this was helpful and relative
FYI- I have made these before. I went to Lowes, HD, Menards and collected the wooden slats they place between stacks of wood (separators). They are usually found broken or on the floor and such. But it saves you having to buy lumber and mill it down. I also used pallet wood for the slats in the bottom to make the crates a little more sturdy
I wanted crates for a vendor booth, love the look and stability, and they cost too much for what/how they were made. One set had the brad nails through the boards and inner corners and still stuck out about 1/4 inch. So thanks to this and a few other videos I planned out my own and for much cheaper. Thanks for the tips and breakdowns.
Attaching the bottom slats to the sides has been a struggle, the sides are so thin that the brads penetrate through on one side or the other. It needs something else too bite into.
Thanks for the video. It came to mind that I could use a little grey matter and convert one of these crates (add some more slats) into a potato or onion bin with a slanted 45 angle for the stuff to roll down to a 1x4 front stop about 1.5" out the front for easy access. You really get the mind to moving. Thanks for that.
Another GREAT video and project Matthew! Appreciate all you do and come up with. Particularly like your attention to cost of materials and total cost of product!!
Cool video. I looked in the corner of my tiny shop at all the scrap wood. I’m inspired to make some crates, big ones…small ones what ever the scraps will give me! 😃
Just wanted to say thank you I watched the video and making birdhouses out of cedar pickets and have never done anything like that and I can't make them fast enough I sell them for $60 in my area and I'm having a lot of fun everyone turns out a little better thank you for being an inspiration
I was picking up a screen door off craigslist this morning and the guy had 2 crates stacked next to the side door. From the markings I could tell they were made from pallet wood and looked just like the 2nd crate only smaller and square.
Oh man!! Why have I not thought of a jig?!?!? Brilliant! I have a bunch of crates to make - heading to the shop to make jigs first. Love your content, dude!
I can see how you could slightly modify the design on your second model to make them interlock when stacked upright. You would have to invert the slat/space pattern on the bottom, and offset the side slats about 1/4” upwards, so the corner posts stuck out the bottom, and were shy of the top. With that layout, the corner posts act as feet, and also nest into the next crate down if you stack them. I’ll give it a try, I’ve been working on a design in my head for stacking garden crates, to cary seed starter pots in, and your design us way more economical than what I had planned!
Mr. Peech, When you are cutting the slats out of the 2x4 you cut half way through then flipped it around and cut the rest of the way through, why not just cut the entire way through on the first swipe? Thanks
Maybe you have mentioned this elsewhere, but can you recommend a good table saw for a beginner. I would prefer one that I dont have to change out in a year. Thanks and your videos are great.
LOVE that slat spacing jig! You could do a hybrid crate: Use a 1x6 for the top of the ends and make the hand holes, then slats for the lower part of the ends. It might be cheaper.
I get the wood slats for free at my work-place (home manufacturing plant).I, also, stop by the "wood department" at my local landfill for some freebees. I've built a few of these. I like the styles you've come up with.
Matt you and another woodworker have helped me so much as far as idea's, tools, and encouragement. Ty so much!!! Big brother hug to ya! I don't know tech stuff but when I learn I'll send some pics of my projects. Prayers to you and yours
For anyone wanting to start: I started in March acquiring tools and trying fence pickets planters. Experience with tools but 0 with wood working. Sunk about 450$ in start up(over the course of two weeks) and steadily picked up business. This week (last week of may) I’m selling 3 7.5 ft long boxes for 900$. Just go ahead and try it
I’ve been looking at these for garage storage and my shop. Now that I know I can build them supper cheap, I’ll have tons of nice storage in my shop. Don’t tell my wife I can make them, she’ll want at least a dozen herself 🤣

Another great, inspirational video. Thanks Mr Peech. However, I always marvel and gasp at how cheap your box-store timber is! A single stick of 2 x 4 x 12' here in Australia is $21 (USD$13.74).
I really like your videos- I have watched many of them- I wish you would also mention the approximate cost of other materials such as wood glue, nails, sandpaper, etc- nails, screws, hardware, bolts, etc. are more expensive than I realized- giving an estimated cost for additional items would give a better estimated cost per product
Another excellent video on some simple yet desirable and potentially profitable projects. I'm very happy to have found this YT channel, keep up the great work.
I've loved a lot of your stuff. I think my challenge is I really have no space for a table saw. I'd love to see a few things that you rip down/build using only a circular or jig saw.

How can I hide the nails? I don't like multiple nail heads showing on the surface. Any tips? Shall I use 'No-Nails' strong wood glue instead? That won't be strong enough to bear the load, would it?
This is an awesome project! On your style, what is the strength comparison vs the one with a solid side? I know my family loves to overload these type crates. At the big box store in Australia . (Bunnings ) they had some crates and they were flat packed . The four panels where screwed to form the crate .
Regarding the cutting down the 2x4 into thin strips, what about using lath boards if you don't have a table saw.
