  • The title says it all. This is the internal Coleco product demo for the Spring 1988 Starcom line.
3/16/13 - Some additional information that my wife told me about. She was there the entire time during the filming, even setup the backdrop and prepared the toys. Turns out not all of the toys were totally functioning and took multiple takes to get them to work at all. In some spots you can see him pull a little at the end to get them to open all the way.
More interestingly though is the wedding ring he's wearing. It's not his. They made him wear one so anyone watching didn't think it was a single guy talking about kids toys.

My dad was in sales for Coleco, so I had almost all the StarCom figures and vehicles... they were just too awesome.

A truly great toy line from the 80's. If I didn't collect arcade games, I would go back to collecting vintage toys. This was one of the toy lines I loved as a kid

Yeah, it was an odd time. Slow toy sales in 87. NES and video games were still red hot, but nothing big broke toy wise. Probably a mix of lackluster fiction to push the toy, lackluster marketing from a company about to collapse (in part) due to embezzling.

Fantastically thought out toys, I adored them in the late 80s. Remember waking up on Christmas Day to the Starmax bomber and some other Starcom stuff and almost hyperventilating with excitement.

Surely one of the coolest lines in Toy History. ALMOST got them all; Childrens' palace went out of business, then the rest fell like dominoes, after Coleco declared bankruptcy ... OH those EIGHTIES toy days!

I stumbled upon this toy line in the late 90's
I found a RAT vehicle in a box of old 80's toys. I didnt know what it was but I immediately loved it. The spring loaded opening was SO cool and unusual. I played with micronauts as a young kid so the line was so similar. Im surprised somebody hasnt reissued these.

Toys from the 80's and 90's were more intellectualy made , here we have toys that doesn't need "batteries" at all which is very neat idea since batteries polute and cost a ton . Nowadays many toys uses batteries which makes me angry that no one of the new toys societies or makers has tought about Starcom toys that was ahead of its time . Toys nowadays are too expensive for the cheap plastic used its not more the same as before . I so want a day they could remake all the vintage toys again , it would make alot people happy all generations .

Man, I still have some of these hanging around my house and my nephew plays with them. Hell the magnets still work like new! Possibly my favorite toys of the 80's closely behind G.I. Joes.

  • @pete7645

i had almost every toy they came out with it was very inavative for its time utilizing magnets and spring action movements, my favorite one didnt last too long it was sort of a zip line you could set up about 10 to 15 feet and had a vehicle that move across the line holding a action figure. also anougher favorite was this small boxy looking vehical thats wheels swong out to become a faster loking little baja type cruiser! i wish i kept these toys they prob be a good collecter item.

It's not video games. We had video games too. They weren't as advanced, but we didn't know that. We were all glued to Atari, Intellivision, Coleco, NES....not to mention riding bikes to arcades to blow allowances & yard raking money.
The issue is that in the 80s, toy companies worked hand-in-hand w/ animation companies. We were hooked on the cartoons, so we had to have the toys, which made us into toys in general. No generation was ever as into toys as the 80s.
Even if they tried to implement that culture again, it would have a hard time against the internet, smartphones, & tablets that take up their limited free time.
So with no way to get kids interested in toys, toy design and creativity goes down the toilet.
