- The title says it all. This is the internal Coleco product demo for the Spring 1988 Starcom line.
3/16/13 - Some additional information that my wife told me about. She was there the entire time during the filming, even setup the backdrop and prepared the toys. Turns out not all of the toys were totally functioning and took multiple takes to get them to work at all. In some spots you can see him pull a little at the end to get them to open all the way.
More interestingly though is the wedding ring he's wearing. It's not his. They made him wear one so anyone watching didn't think it was a single guy talking about kids toys.
My dad was in sales for Coleco, so I had almost all the StarCom figures and vehicles... they were just too awesome.
A truly great toy line from the 80's. If I didn't collect arcade games, I would go back to collecting vintage toys. This was one of the toy lines I loved as a kid
Same here. I think I had all of the toys in the video xD
and very sturdy to. Most of the cool toys broke fast. but these are very sturdy
Damn, I’m superbly surprised this never took off better
Yeah, it was an odd time. Slow toy sales in 87. NES and video games were still red hot, but nothing big broke toy wise. Probably a mix of lackluster fiction to push the toy, lackluster marketing from a company about to collapse (in part) due to embezzling.
Fantastically thought out toys, I adored them in the late 80s. Remember waking up on Christmas Day to the Starmax bomber and some other Starcom stuff and almost hyperventilating with excitement.
My daughters been watching this with me and has been screaming "I wannit" for each Starcom toy shown... Funny kid😁
Surely one of the coolest lines in Toy History. ALMOST got them all; Childrens' palace went out of business, then the rest fell like dominoes, after Coleco declared bankruptcy ... OH those EIGHTIES toy days!
The toys were top of the line. I still have some in a box somewhere.
Unbelievable❗Now thats what I call innovative engineering...wow
you're right, they were amazing. any kid that had a full set was like a god
someone should bring these back.
I stumbled upon this toy line in the late 90's
I found a RAT vehicle in a box of old 80's toys. I didnt know what it was but I immediately loved it. The spring loaded opening was SO cool and unusual. I played with micronauts as a young kid so the line was so similar. Im surprised somebody hasnt reissued these.
All the Starcom toys I never saw as a child... =)
so many memories... thanks for uploading this!!
Awesome! And awesome added info in the description!
Thanks!
I have the medical bay and about 5 or 6 other starcom toys.
I loved them so much and they where way way ahead of their time.
One otf the most awesome toy series of all time if you ask me.
I had 1 Starcom figure when I was a kid. I loved it. I called it "MAGNET MAN". He's arms eventually broke but I still played with it for years after
that was starcom i had the zipline that was about 10 feet long a had a little vehical that would propel itself across it. these were the coolest toys, im almost 30 now and still rember all of them
Had a couple of them back then, I can't believe how much they want for them on ebay but i want them!
Toys from the 80's and 90's were more intellectualy made , here we have toys that doesn't need "batteries" at all which is very neat idea since batteries polute and cost a ton . Nowadays many toys uses batteries which makes me angry that no one of the new toys societies or makers has tought about Starcom toys that was ahead of its time . Toys nowadays are too expensive for the cheap plastic used its not more the same as before . I so want a day they could remake all the vintage toys again , it would make alot people happy all generations .
starcome was awesome !
Man, I still have some of these hanging around my house and my nephew plays with them. Hell the magnets still work like new! Possibly my favorite toys of the 80's closely behind G.I. Joes.
This is awesome, Is there anyway I could get this video for the Starcom website? do you have anymore?
This toy should be reissued or remade. They're a huge contender to diaclone.
damn my brother and me loved these toys
my next door neighbor, as a kid, had the ENTIRE fucking set. like, a starcom city, MUCH bigger than what is advertized here. kinda insane. great toys, well built. would fetch you a pretty penny nowadays. i only have one black figure remaining...hah. those were the days
brings back memories, but man better than I remember I was so young but knew I loved them... damn I am 23 now, but shit I need all these lol...going to see if i can find some... Its so cool I have my own money I can just buy them lol...back then yea... I had no money to buy more that one ship and man or whatever...yea, think I will try and find some
a disclaimer for the batteries was the problem? :p
i agree, they should have lasted quite a while. why didnt they last? they were really good toys.
We had it in the Kindergarden in Germany... nice toys..
T!M Studios Watt?? Ernsthaft??
man this brings back memories :)
i use to have a couple of these, but i would never understand how the parts move when you press the button, when it doesnt run on batteries
any relation to coleco vision! does your wife have any products remaing from this company or do you have any more vids or pics?
I had the one at 3:10
memories. happy happy memories.
Man these toys rock. Sadly i had none when i was a kid. They were just too expensive, too ahrd to come by and i was more into Transforemrs at the time.
i had almost every toy they came out with it was very inavative for its time utilizing magnets and spring action movements, my favorite one didnt last too long it was sort of a zip line you could set up about 10 to 15 feet and had a vehicle that move across the line holding a action figure. also anougher favorite was this small boxy looking vehical thats wheels swong out to become a faster loking little baja type cruiser! i wish i kept these toys they prob be a good collecter item.
@rockste4dy86 I guess they actually were pretty popular in Europe, but maybe you've had a chance to read that somewhere in the four years since you posted that haha.
WHY don't they make action toys like this now??
Truth.
Kids are too retarded these days to appreciate it...
I think it's less to do with kids and more to do with cutting costs.
It's not video games. We had video games too. They weren't as advanced, but we didn't know that. We were all glued to Atari, Intellivision, Coleco, NES....not to mention riding bikes to arcades to blow allowances & yard raking money.
The issue is that in the 80s, toy companies worked hand-in-hand w/ animation companies. We were hooked on the cartoons, so we had to have the toys, which made us into toys in general. No generation was ever as into toys as the 80s.
Even if they tried to implement that culture again, it would have a hard time against the internet, smartphones, & tablets that take up their limited free time.
So with no way to get kids interested in toys, toy design and creativity goes down the toilet.
I totally agree with vrossino46!
Geilomat!
Die Dinger hatte ich! So Geil..!
Sky Commanders, I believe.
The figurines have small pieces of magnets in their boot soles. My parents could afford to buy only one figurine for me.
Which is how I got this video (and other stuff :) ), cause my wife worked there when they went under.
Oh cool! Did she work in product development or was she in marketing?
Sure They were available in Germany i got a lot of this Great Toys Best Toys ever i can say.
0:08 Boys is the key word there. So what are you doing here, sir?
i only have 2 of them, mobile medic and gunner
I want his job.
huh?
This man thinks this will be a winner. I dont believe him. Or his lack of enthusiasm. He's like a supply teacher.
i will buy them off you name a price i will pay it!
