I have said this many times. I lost my wife suddenly and tragically several years ago, and in those early days, sitting at a bar eating dinner alone, this song described exactly how I felt. I was a million miles away at the same time watching other people having a good time and i was wondering how can they be so happy while my world is so empty. It is as if Rory wrote this song for me all those years ago. Thanks so much for doing this song. The live version off the Irish Tour 74' album is epic. Rory was much better live than in the studio.

l saw Rory a few times in the early 70s and he's one of the few electric guitarists who is as good on acoustic guitar as electric. So many of the people named as great guitarists are very good as acoustic players which makes me question the genius of so many of the supposed greats. For me the best of all is Richard Thompson, but Rory is hot on his heels.

Rory Gallagher - vocals, guitars, sax

Fabulous! So glad you finally got to Rory. Rory was the songwriter, the vocalist and the guitarist. This song is actually about depression-Rory suffered from it most of his life. Its about being disconnected from the world around you as it flows around you, recognizing that you are on the outside looking in. He was an amazing artist who poured his heart into every piece he played. As others have mentioned, you need to review him in a live performance, because he came alive on a stage in a way few performers do. The 1979 Shadow Play is an example of his energy in a live performance, but since this was an encore at the end of a performance, not the best vocals by that point of the show. The 1979 Rock Goes to College has great performances-Do You Read Me is excellent and shows off a few of his mad guitar skills.

I'd heard "OF" Rory Gallagher early in my days (19 or 20) because Vivian Campbell (Dio's guitarist) mentioned him in a guitar instructional video. It wasn't until I was in my 40's until I actually heard him play though. I had run across a copy of "The Irish Tour" film and decided to get some blues "culture". I was blown away! If you two have a couple hours someday you should watch that video; not only does it have some amazing live performances but there's a lot of cool backstage and Irish cultural material there, including some sad scenes that reflect "The troubles" that Northern Ireland went through, with barbed wire barricades sometimes visible and a truck of armed British soldiers driving by at one point. Rory was one of the few performers that would play in N. Ireland at the time, due to the danger.
Rory is famous for being a "blues" man but if you dig into his catalog, you'll find out that there's not many musical styles that he didn't try his hand at; Rock, blues, country, folk, pop, metal ("Moonchild" is metal as f**k) he even did a song called "Signals" that borders on New Wave/Post Punk.

love the way lex just can't stop that smile spreading across her face whenever she's listening to good music. She has great taste.
And every song Brad just sits there as though he's watching paint dry.

Rory. One of the most underrated musicians by the general public. But if you ask musicians he is very well known by the rock generation. Brian May of Queen, Alex Lifeson from Rush among those that have great things to say. Please check out more tunes from him.

Rory was the real deal. Fortunate to have seen him in Chicago. The break for the band consisted of Rory pulling a bar stool on stage and jamming solo on his acoustic guitar.

The greatest complement to have been given this mans skill was to have Jimmy Hendrix pay deference to Rory's playing. The live version adds another layer to A Million Miles Away a true blues classic. Needing and wanting to join into the cheerful environment that surrounds you, but the unexplainable blues you grapple with prevents this.

The one and only Rory Gallagher - 'high energy blues'!!! And he could ROCK! Please dig deeper into this artist, lots of great suggestions in the comments.
For pure blues, check out his What In The World - BBC Sessions (live audio). He was also brilliant acoustic player.

Rory refused to sellout to the music industry and said he would do singles, and it was because of this people never really heard of Rory, except for all the grates that took from him 💯🎸🔥

Rory is in the top 3 rock/Blues guitarists in history. That isn't just me saying that. Jimi Hendrix said that Rory was the greatest guitar player nobody outside Ireland has ever heard of. Actually, all the great Bands of the 60s and 70s knew very well who this Irish artist was. A great talent, that still many Americans have never heard play. Rory died in the late 80s or early 90s, I think.
    Thanks guys

Slash met him and speaks highly of him. Brian May, too. Basically all guitar players who met him not only appreciate his skill but also his down to earth manners. He might had a shot to join the Stones, but in the end preferred to do his own thing. He died in 95 when a liver transplant did not work out.
There is not only the Irish tour recording and live in Montreux. He played also a lot of Rockpalast festivals in Germany from the 70s to the early 90s. A couple of years ago German television brought all this recordings out on DVD. One is with one disc holding recordings from 1976, 77 and 79. And another is three DVDs with all the recordings from 76 up to 1990. It is a fantastic set of live music by an fantastic musician.
He lived music and really cared for his fans. An example for every musician.
