What is your favorite Rory Gallagher song?
Going to my Hometown, is probably my all time favorite, he plays the mandolin
@@bryanphelan9616 That sounds awesome. I'll add it to the list
Anything from Irish tour 74
Out on a
Western plain
A million miles away
Great reaction thank you. He is not playing the wammy bar. He is playing with the volume controls. The man was a genius.
Which is even crazier. Someone mentioned it and I went back and watched. There is no whammy bar. Insane
Rory Gallagher does a billion things without a whammy bar that a hundred other guitarists think they invented, but they could never do it like Rory Gallagher does. As a blues/rock player he's untouchable, and frankly only 'unknown' to those who don't know a lot about real guitar playing.@@AceofBadeReacts
@@privateprivate4378 I think it's a little more than that. I don't think I've heard any of his songs on the radio, but he has some crazy guitar techniques and philosophies that I've seen used in other videos, like Rush and Linkin Park
@@AceofBadeReacts Yes Alex Lifeson said he learned a lot from watching Rory when Rush supported him when they were just starting out. Rory then supported Rush when they were huge in the 80s.
Alex Lifeson talks about Rory Gallagher ruclips.net/video/Z7ItG4jIfC0/видео.htmlsi=x-ntxb98xWpppDdJ
@@SlumminAngel That's awesome
Thanks for another Rory reaction. Rory was a blues master and a righteous rock 'n roller who also embraced jazz, folk, country and some funk. As wildapplellamas7751 mentioned, there is no whammy bar on Rory's guitar - he would create myriad sounds by manipulating the volume and tone knobs - and shows why he was in a league of his own. You might enjoy delving into some of Rory with his band Taste (1966-1970), 'Blister On The Moon' (from the Taste album) is a great place to start. Anyway, thanks and keep on...
oh cool. I'll add it to the list
One of the greatest guitar players and a wonderful musician
I think I can agree
The GOAT hands down. Anything Hendrix could do, Rory could do in his sleep
Such a phenomenal guitarist
Great guitarist? Yup.
Great singer? Yup.
But what is often overlooked is that he wrote many of his songs.
The Rolling Stones asked him to join their band. He said no thanks. He didn't need them.
That's absolutely insane
@@AceofBadeReacts That's Rory. And that's why you'll find diehard Rory fans to this day.
The Hammersmith Apollo, currently called the Eventim Apollo for sponsorship reasons, and formerly known as the Hammersmith Odeon, is located in London. I thought you might like this piece because it really shows off his skills on the fretboard-and NO whammy bar. That is Rory using the tone pot with his little finger-watch his right hand cupping the tone control. The bar on his Strat broke off long before this and he didn't use it much so never had it fixed. As for a favorite Rory song? Oh so many for so many different reasons! Try checking out "Pistol Slapper Blues" for a fun acoustic number that was a staple of his live shows. Or check out "Goin' to My Hometown" from 1974's Irish Tour to see him rock a mandolin! Another amazing blues number is "I Wonder Who" from 1984 Belfast. Please keep on checking out Rory's vast and varied catalog. Thank you!
Wow yeah you're right. That's crazy. Some of those were on what was the previous list, but I updated with the year and location.
Merci for the comments. Is there any footage of Rory changing a broken string...mid-song?
Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.
haha that's awesome. Was he the highlight of the night?
He's not using a whammy bar, never did as far as I know, used to see him religiously when he came to Toronto, early-mid-70s, up 'til '76. Left for the west coast in '77. When I returned, was mainly broke/struggling with my own musical goals. Phenomenal guitarist, beautiful human being, Rest In Peace, Rory.
Yeah I was learning about what he was actually doing in the comments. That's crazy. How far did you go with your music goals?
@AceofBadeReacts Here's a link to some of my stuff from the last 43 years. 'Down and Dirty'(title song)and 'When A Line Breaks' are from a rock-theater show I co-produced and performed in in 1980, followed by 'Man On A Ledge' and 'Bye Bye', submissions to a radio station contest, '81, 3rd drummer for the band, earlier, rehearsal version of 'Bye Bye', written in 1978 after returningtoToronto from Vancouver, wrong version site manager's error. 'I Fell in Love With You' properly called 'The Next Song', written in Toronto, '77, recorded '80 or '81 in drummer's basement studio. Same with 'Fantasy Factor' except written in Vancouver, '77, recorded '80.
'April In Berlin', recorded for a local compilation CD in '99. Under the music note 🎵 (press), Flowers for Megalon/Damon Hines, songs written between '82 and '07, recorded '07-'08. Video version of Baubles from RUclips, no-budget, friend-shot, '09. Hope you find something to enjoy, even a bit. Lots of stuff just lost to life's attrition.

Assuming he's using standard control configuration for a stratocaster he's getting that sound by changing the tone. A bit hard to tell with the video quality, but when you get a close look at his guitar the pickup selector is in the middle position and with his right hand he's working the tone control furthest from the pickups. A strat has three pickups but only two tone controls. The pickup nearest the bridge has no tone adjustment. Three rotary controls ate the two tone controls and a volume control (the one nearest the bridge pickup . At least that's how the configuration was on the mid 70's strat that I used to play.
I saw Rory twice in the late 70's. He was all about the music. Jeans, checked shirt, beat up guitar and great playing. Came across as a very down to earth, friendly person.
I'm thankful for all the videos Rory left us. But u really needed to see him live to appreciate his genius. My friends & I saw him in 1972 at a big rock festival in N. Carolina. He put on a performance I'll never forget! You can go back to his early band "Taste" & watch their performance of "Sugar Mama" at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. Rory just kills it! Love him!
yeah I was born too late to see him live unfortunately
You'll notice some of his solo phrases sounds like saxophone phrases - not surprising, he was also a self-taught sax player.
Oh really? That's awesome. Does he play sax on any song?
@@AceofBadeReacts He did on the second Taste album, on this ruclips.net/video/MYn1nBqUpFM/видео.htmlsi=DXvjPGkrwvbdbHZf
@@AceofBadeReacts Yes, 'Can't Believe It's True' from the self-titled album Rory Gallagher, and with Taste, 'On The Boards, and ''It's Happened Before, It'll Happen Again' (there is a Beat Club video of that one but not on RUclips, it got taken down. I believe there's a DVD though)
A absolute irish legend we have a statue of him in Ireland
That's awesome
Seen him multiple times in Belfast, N Ireland, like a second home to him. Outstanding guitarist, not forgetting his stalwart bassist Gerry McAvoy ( from Belfast).
That's pretty cool
been a Rory fan for the last 50 years...got just about everything he made ....The Irish Hurricane !!
I don't think I've heard him called that yet. That is a very appropriate name
The GOAT - Calling Card is my fave Rory Gallagher song. Check out Secret Agent from the same album.
I'll add it to the list
Clean, classic, controlled love Rory super cool and great voice like your comments Ace.
100%
Rory IS the greatest Guitarist, whether you've heard of him or not. The next Rory video you react to should DEFINITELY be: 'Do You Read Me' Rock Goes To College 1979'
That one is on the list. I also mention Rory Gallagher in some upcoming reactions, too.
"FOR THE LAST TIME"
I'll add it to the list
He does not have a whammy bar on his guitar,I think he was using the volume knobs for that sound.
Yeah which is even more insane
Rory doesn't get the recognition he deserves outside guitar players his ability was supreme his control over his instrument was jedi level powers 🤘🤘🤘
100%
Rory was great live. Check out Irish Tour 74 and live disc from BBC sessions 77
I think some of those songs are on the list. If I remember right I have 1 selected for one of the reactions I'm sitting down to do soon
Rory, the very best 🎸❤️
Thanks for another Rory reaction, hope to see more, here are a few suggestions,

Jam Session, Guitar Techniques & As The Crow Flies (acoustic 1974)
Rag Mama Rag - Rockpalast 1976 (acoustic)
Bullfrog Blues - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1976

P.S. As everyone else has said, there is no whammy bar on Rory's guitar!
I'll add these to the list
@@AceofBadeReacts 👍 I've got another one for you,
Tattoo'd Lady - Rockpalast 1979 13+ minutes of magic & mayhem!
I've seen him in London great guitarist 👍👍👍
That's awesome!
I'm pretty sure Jimi Hendrix was interviewed somewhere and was asked who was the best guitar player, Jimi said go ask Rory Gallagher... I always thought it was a complement.
That very much is a complement
@@AceofBadeReactsBut it just an urban myth!
Try "Used To Be" off the Deuce album. I highly recommend the video from the Beat Club tv performance.
I've seen him in London great guitarist 👍 👍👍
I think it would have been awesome to see him live
@@AceofBadeReacts it was one the greats
soooo good
100%. I have another video ready to react to that I'm probably going to do either Monday or Tuesday
Have a look at the video and you can see his wammy bar is missing and he gets all his sound from the volume and tone pots. I saw him many times live and he NEVER NEVER used a wammy bar…..
Yeah that was pointed out a few times
A big venue in london
I'd be surprised if Bad Penny live n Montreux hasn't come up ❤ the whole band are on top form👍
And of course "Brute Force & Ignorance " 👍👍👍👍
Is Bad Penny a song?
@AceofBadeReacts
Yep a darn good one 🤣🥳not too sure how to link to it on You tube ,I'm OLD, But Rory Gallagher Bad Penny live at Montreux should bring something up 👍
In fact I think I might watch it right now 🤣👏

@@matthewmcalley392 Awesome. I'll add it to the list
A cool reaction video, I think you're making a mistake on whammy bar. I don't think his guitar has a whammy bar, I think he is playing around with his tone knob as he is playing.
I do believe you are right
Mountain top!
I'll add it to the list
Jimi Hendrix has said he is the best guitarist
He is phenomenal
Ro
Fix tour sound
This is the first apartment I've been in with hardwood floors and it's causing an echo in this room. I'm going to work on figuring out how to reduce the echo, but I can't promise anything right now
God and Satan fought over that 61 strat and Rory won.
Rory fought the law and he won
I've seen Joe Bonamassa playing it
Which one is he ?😂
Fuck me that would be some battle between Rory and Joe would have to be staged in hell worth anybodys money@@matthewmcalley392
Haha , God took him in the end, a practicing Christian his funeral had twelve concelebrants including three bishops, and thousands lining the streets.. the Christian saint of Rock and blues..
