Rory Gallagher is probably one of the most underrated guitarist there is. If you want to get a feel for how good he was, listen to A Million Miles Away and Walking on Hot Coals on the Irish Tour Album.
I've got that album and I've seen him twice. Rory was amazing.
You're right, as good as the studio version is, the Irish Tour's one is for me the ultimate one.
Live in Europe is a great album too
German TV has some nice Rory recordings. Look for RockPalast. many other nice concerts there.
I've got it on DVD 😌🙏
Thank you for playing Rory Gallagher. Most people don't know who he is. He is one of the greatest Rock/Blues guitarists of all time. He's right there with Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Johnny Winter. He didn't play to make a ton of money, but because he loved performing for his fans in small venues. He was a fantastic showman and guitarist. He died about 15 or 20 yrs, ago.
A great Irishman.
Saw Rory at The Bottom line many yrs. ago and he was dynamite...
I agree!
he died in 1995, age 47....
Gracias por la remembranza. Me quedo con un gran IRLANDES
Actually Jimi Hendrix said that Rory was better then he was. Jimi also said that about Terry Kath Hendrix was just so humble and appreciated great guitarist.
I am 58 now, my guitar is covered by dust, but you bring back my youth. Keep it alive.
oh yes, my all time hero. I saw him live at the 1st Rockpalastnacht in the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany July 1977. With Little Feat and Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd. This event was shown live on television at the time. One of my best concerts. Rory Gallagher one of the greatest in musical history. I will love him until I die 🎸🇩🇪
Rory Gallagher is hands down one of the top 10 guitarists of all time (and you really need to hear his live recordings to really appreciate his playing, especially this song live is much better). Lots of BIG rock bands at the time tried to get him to join them, but he always wanted to do his own thing. An Irish working class hero, he was always hard working and down to earth, and he really connected with his audience (from Cork, he was one of the few musicians from the south who could get away with playing in Northern Ireland during the troubles)
Totally agree! I grew up seeing Rory live in Manchester in the 70's, loved everything about how he played and his performances. Live in Europe was my go to album for a long time! I still play his music but nothing will replace the experience of seeing him live in my 6th form days!
The Rolling Stones was one of those bands, but, as they said themselves, he wouldn't have fitted in, wouldn't be able to take orders as he needed to be himself. So he was always his own boss.
@@annereidy7981 How can a virtuoso ever take orders? From who? It's a rhetorical question, not attacking the messenger ;) When you listen to Rory, every song seems complete. He doesn't overcook and he doesn't underplay. He gives each song enough, and then ends. So it's not just that he knew every millimetre of his preferred instrument better than most (including all members of the Rolling Stones) he knew how to construct a 'guitar' song better than most. I don't know what the orders would be or who'd feel qualified to give them to him. MIck: "You're sleeping in room 78 tonight, Rory".
@@wewhofly yes, I was trying to make the same point, in my clumsy way. Agree whole heartedly.
Rory refused to sellout to the music industry, and to ever do singles that would have got him to the top, his manger put one together behind Rory back before he released it but Rory threw it in the bin. A reporter asked Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, what’s it like to be the best guitar player in the world, he replied, “ I don’t know you should ask Rory Gallagher”. 🎸 🔥
Rory was an incredible talent. A guitarist with so much feel to his playing just brilliant.
Shadow play probably his best but so many! and love this track too!
You just discovered one of the best guitarist EVER. He is considered a national treasure in Ireland. He was a great rocker. Next song, go with 'Walk on Hot Coals' the Irish Tour album. Nick, I know you and Lex don't like blues, but listen to Rory's acoustic blues. He can play ANYTHING. Legend has it that when Jimi Hendrix was asked how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world, he replied, "I don't know; ask Rory Gallagher." Google what other great guitarist say about Rory. But better yet, just listen to him. NO ONE is better than Rory, and you can count on one hand who is as good.
I attended a concert in Duluth, Minnesota on May 8th, 1973 where Rory Gallagher was the first act followed by Fleetwood Mac and ended with Deep Purple. Rory Gallagher stole the show in my opinion because of his incredible talent and wonderful showmanship. RIP Mr. Gallagher. ❤
What a lineup, Gallagher, Fleetwood and Purple, I'm so greedy!
I saw that tour in Long Beach, CA but it was Bob Welch Fleetwood Mac.
@@4wood2cit I'm sure he was a member of the band at that time so he must have been there.
@@melissakhalar1842 It was post Peter, Danny, and Jeremy. They were losing their Blues roots.
Oh boy. I get to share my Rory Gallagher story....again. So I went to see Deep Purple during their Machine Head tour in 1973 with Fleetwood Mac and opening, Rory Gallagher. I had never heard of Rory but by the time he was through, they were having to put a new roof on the building cause he blew the lid off the place. So out comes Fleetwood Mac. Not the Fleetwood Mac we all know today. Not even the Fleetwood Mac of Peter Green. This was the Bob Welsh FM and they were minus the late great Danny Kirwin. So no songs from Kiln House, no songs from Future Games, and no songs from Bare Trees. In otherwords, they sucked without a dynamic lead guitar player. We booed FM off stage and nearly rioted till Rory came out for a 3rd encore and removed the roof again!. That was my FIRST TIME REACTION to this absolute force of nature. Oh ya and Deep Purple was pretty good too.😅
Love your story, thanks for sharing.
Saw that show at the Long Beach Arena
He was a musician who wasn't interested in pop or rock status. Always true to himself, only wanted to play music. And he did that amazingly. Surely you must watch and listen to Tattoo'd Lady from the Irish Tour album on RUclips. It's legendary! Not for the show per se, in your own time. You'll see him in action. Soundwise, it's really satisfying.
His "Irish Tour '74" is one of the best live albums ever released. Brilliant in concert, such a loss at such a young age.
That ... and Live in Europe
best version of Million miles away on the Irish Tour
I saw Rory Gallagher in 1978 at an outdoor rock concert in Saarbruken Germany, he was on the bill with Mollie Hatchet, Alvin Lee and 10 years Later, the Commodores, and Queen.
Rory Gallagher is an artist I have recommended to every reactor I have watched, and yours is the first channel to actually react to him
I got turned on to Rory by a barracks mate in 1975 when I was stationed in Germany. I finally saw him live in 1991 in Tempe, Arizona. Got to shake his hand after the show. He can never be appreciated enough.
Was lucky to see Rory live at Newcastle City Hall back in the 70's, amazing to see live, very talented. Great reaction.
Thank you so much for playing this. Rory was the first major artist I ever saw - an 8 hour round trip from my small town in the far west of Wales. Other tracks to try would be Walk on Hot Coals, Hands Off, Messing with the Kid, Tattooed Lady, Calling Card.
Both Brian May (Queen) & Slash (Velvet Revolver, Guns & Roses) credit Rory with their playing. Alex Lifeson (Rush) was a personal friend of his having been the opening act for Rory early in Rush's career, then with Rory as the opening act for Rush a decade or so later. Everyone that ever came in contact will tell you how humble he was, though he had magnificent chops. Please treat yourself to more Rory. Record companies tried to make him a guitar hero (first with "Taste" & then solo) but Rory always refused to be swayed. He loved playing smaller venues instead of stadiums because being close to the audience drove him as a performer, he was high energy on stage, laidback off stage. I got the chance to see him once & it was a great concert.
There are some vids on yt showing Joe Bonamassa playing the Rory Gallagher Strat. Not just another Strat but THE most famous single Strat. One Strat to rule them all.
The master of Irish blues. So good. Proud to have had such a great guitarist come from here in Ireland.
❤️
Thank you and blessed be for keeping the genius and memory of Rory Gallagher alive ❤️
Calling Card is Rorys Album from 1976 - he also did so Jazz influenced music earlier and played Saxophone.
Saw Rory open for RUSH in 1982 (Richfield Coliseum, Ohio). Amazing show. Damn, almost 40 years ago. Remember it like yesterday.
Rory is an artist who is best heard in live performances.
Saw Rory in Germany in '75. Awesome guitarist! Thanks for bringing him back!
Stealie Sighting! Rory and Jerry passed away in the same year. RIP to both inspirational legends.
Alex Lifeson of RUSH credits Rory with teaching him PICK HARMONICS while they were on tour together in the early 80's. RUSH opened for Rory in 1974 when he played in Canada. Then, years later, Rory opened for RUSH. 1982 I think it was. I saw that concert and tour. If you search on you tube for Alex Lifeson talks Rory Gallagher or Slash interview about Rory Gallagher or Brian May interview on Rory Gallagher you will hear how he influenced may different guitarists. He was a guitar god taken to early in life. I would suggest you look for these songs on youtube by Rory for a different sound from him.
" Off the Handle (Montreux 1979) "
" Do You Read Me (Rock goes to College, 1979) "
Thank you for reacting to this great artist. I had the chance to see him live in 1975. R.I.P. Rory.
You have to be the first reactors ever, to react to Rory Gallagher, lucky you, but you'd be even luckier to see him live. He preferred playing live to studio work, more scope for improvisation. Try Taste live at the Isle of Wight. 1969 I think! Great to finally see him up here where he belongs, thanks!
Rory was great. Irish tour '74 is great . Every song smokes.☺
omg. i haven't listened to, or thought about Rory Gallagher for decades. thanks!
I'm so glad that you've gotten round to Rory, he was a special talent. Not just blues but some blistering rock too. Lou Martin's keyboards were so right with Rory, they are both sadly missed. This was a very nice surprise, thank you.
I love Rory Gallagher (gone too soon), my favorite blues rock guitarist. The version of A Million Miles away on his great album Irish Tour '74 is terrific. So, many great albums from Rory and very under appreacited.
Yep, way better than this studio version. Saw him live four or five times and he always blew everyone away.
I saw Rory twice, live. The most amazing shows I've ever been to.
My goodness, you've struck gold here! But please react to one of his live performances, Calling Card, Secret Agent or maybe Bullfrog Blues?. He didn't like the studio much, he lived for playing live to audiences and he was sensational. Master of acoustic/electric blues/rock and supreme slide playing. He used to use a Vox AC30 amplifier on a chair mic'd up and is the sole reason Brian May to this day uses the same configuration albeit beefed up to multiple AC30s for stadium playing. Brian when very young met Rory backstage at a concert and was inspired and amazed how he took the time to chat and encourage him and his friends. Rory, a great soul and talent lost way too soon. RIP.
😮7
So good to hear a Rory Gallagher reaction. A truly great, but incredibly modest guitarist, and he used to be in the band Taste if memory serves me? Its one of the rare times where a great musician didn't aim for fame and fortune and played for the love of his music. I was lucky enough to see him perform many times at the Greyhound, Croydon England during the early 70s, he was really in his element at a small (pub) venue... Cheers Bob...
On vinyl.....up there with Groundhogs Split.
I believe Taste was actually Rory's band!
RiP to a true musical legend!
OMG Rory!!!! Thank you! Thank you! If you want a bit of background info on Rory, take a listen to this interview by Alex Lifeson (not very long, but interesting). Alex covers some of the topics that Nick brought up ruclips.net/video/Z7ItG4jIfC0/видео.html
At last mr Rory Gaallagher (RIP)
At last Rory! great to see a reaction, I followed this Legend back in the early 70s to any gig I could reach, like its been said he's the most underrated guitarist and forgotten by many but to those who know the man his music and his tragic demise he is GOD! try Tattooed lady, Shadow play or Bullfrog Blues :) lets get more going. great reaction btw.
That's Rory on the saxophone 🎷 as well.
This is stuck in my head. It's been about 40years now. It runs through my thoughts all day. Everyday. Some times my mood is not in style. Thanks 🙏
Rory was one of the best LIVE PERFORMERS ever. Great guitarist, but his live stage performance was where he excelled.
MUST be seen live to understand.
Possibly my favourite guitarist in this genre. I recall an interview with Brit guitarist Johnny Marr who knew he was in the presence of greatness when he saw Rory changing a string... without having to stop playing.
Marr is Irish.
The best guitarrist ever!!!
El mejor guitarrista de todos los tiempos
Thanks for doing RG! The pride of Ireland. Nick was partially correct about airplay. This did get airplay on FM stations in the 70s but I don't think I would describe it as a hit single. The album itself in all likelihood probably charted better in Europe than in the US. I think RG was a brilliant guitarist and an even more exceptionally talented performer. When the show was over RG left it all out on the staged except of course when he encored and left a some more. He NEVER just phoned it in. Irish Tour videos would be a good place to start for that perspective. RG was such an unassuming artist. Almost always played dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt and playing a beat up well played guitar that he seemed to be born with. My favorite RG album has always been "Calling Card." I think it really holds up well through time. You mentioned Gary Moore and the song Still Got the Blues For You but have you seen the video with the extended solo live. It has got about a zillion views. If you explore more blues based music than make sure to check out Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac "Then Play On" album. In addition to SRV it would be great to see check out Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton (The Humbler) Also for acoustic please consider Michael Hedges and Tommy Emmanuel. Hedges was a rare talent and practically created the percussive acoustic guitar genre.
Thanks! The best guitar player of all time!
Rory Gallagher live is Rory Gallagher at his best. Check out "I Wonder Who - Rory Gallagher Live In Belfast" and "Do You Read Me" from Rock Goes To College and you'll be blown away.
Irish Tour 74 version is out of this world. So much urgency ....
That was my first listen also. It's rare that I can listen to something new from the 70's and like it because I've already heard so many bands from that era. Thanks for the surprise!
Rory Gallagher was known for his finger-picking technique and is one of the best slide guitar players ever. His playing influenced many rock guitarists including, Brian May, Slash, Alex Lifeson, and the Edge. Sadly he passed away at the early age of 47 after a failed liver transplant.
Rory Gallagher started playing professionally at age 15 in Irish showbands that covered hits of the day. He formed the band Taste in 1966 which became a tremendous hit in Europe in late 60s. Watch their performance at Isle of Wight 1970, esp "Sugar Mama". It's killer rock! I saw him once here in USA 1972 at outdoor rock festival. I will never forget him. A musical genius & a humble kind man. Thanks for this post.
You're in for a treat! Rory Gallagher is so underrated. Part of that is because a lot of people haven't heard him. Can't wait until you do Stevie Ray Vaughan. I hope you do "Little Wing."
Live in Madrid 1975 on RUclips. Excellent performance!!!!!!
Somebody once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world and he replied, "I don't know. You need to ask Rory Gallagher".
Never in it for the fame or money, Rory played for the love of the music and the audience.
He was the real deal.
Check out some of his live performances to really get a feel for what he was about.
R.I.P. Rory Gallagher.
Saw him many many years ago. He was such an amazing artist. Thank you for reacting to him! Love you two.🥰🌅🌇⛱️
Nick love watching you react.🎸🎶🎸🎶
On the Mike Douglas Show when Hendrix had become the toast of the town. Douglas asked Hendrix: “What’s it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world?” Jimi then beautifully responded, “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Rory Gallagher”.
SOMEONE asked Hendrix "whats it like to be the worlds greatest guitarist ?" he replied"I dont know ask Rory Gallagher", I was lucky to see him live twice ,he was mesmerising ,his joy and enthusiasm were infectious and the whole crowd was rocking ,fantastic musician .
Anyone interested in the true Rory must listen to all his live albums: Irish Tour 74, Live in Europe and Stagestruck as they truly showcase his genius in improvising. Few could touch his fast unique, tasty fills before EVH came along. There are many audience recordings too, all are amazing. To add influences- both KK Downing and Glen Tipton of Judas Priest mentioned his influence for his pinch harmonics as well as others mentioned above. Hybrid picking: pick + fingers is what you were referring to.
this is a good rabbit hole to dig into. check out some of his live stuff, him and his whole band are amazing artists.
I named my son Rory. He's a darned good drummer now
The most underappreciated guitarist. A massive talent. Wish I had seen him on stage.
This was good! Particularly liked the way the guitar sounded throughout the entire track! Thanks for the video! Take care of yourselves!
Rory was a mindblowing guitarist, period. He might even change your idea of blues (or blues rock), I don't know -- but he did some amazing acoustic things, some amazing slide things, and some flat out burning rock, too. His record "Top Priority" leans more on the rock side. Check out the "coral guitar" (which is basically an electric guitar set up to sound sitar-ish) on the song "Philby". (A bit of trivia: it was Pete Townshend's instrument he borrowed to play on that song).
I saw Rory in 1974 at the Montreal forum. The two opening acts were Rush and nazareth. Tickets were less than five dollars. I also saw him twice during the 80s. When you talk legends, Rory was a true legend and a major influence on so many guitarists including Slash from guns and roses.😀❤❤
Thanks for featuring Rory, but now you have to listen to his live recordings to really understand his genius and passion. If you prefer rock, check out Do You Read Me or Shin Kicker live. He sets that Strat on FIRE! Love the G-Man!
Saw him in 1971 at The British Rock Meeting in Speyer, Germany. A two day outdoor concert.
Love Rory. He was brilliant and under rated. Great vocalist to boot
Please, more Rory! Saw him once in 1978 and I was never the same. Rory played his own type of blues which was at times infused with jazz and folk and he was a also a mighty rocker. Mind-blowing guitarist and songwriter. He was gifted to us by the music gods. IMHO he is beyond compare. Check out his Beat Club performances.
Although Rory is very much blues, he has some great rock songs. The Top Priority and Photo Finish albums are probably my favorite and I think they are more heavily rock. Blues rock is my favorite genre. I think the British Blues invasion of the 60s amplified the blues and really turned it into rock.
👍
Time keeps on ticking...
Going through a box of old ticket stubs the other day.

(RIP Rory, Lou, Rod. Thank You!)
From the Irish Band "Taste" 1966-1970. Rory was the contemporary of Groups like Thin Lizzy T Love Sculpture. Dynamic guitarist and "Flash" for his time.
Love Sculpture were probably the most underrated band of the 60's, 'Sabre Dance' and 'Seagull', classic's!
@@pamelaabbey6009 Sabre Dance for sure. Dave Edmunds before he heard Rockpile knocking...
Saw Rory in the 70’s at The Bottom Line in NYC. He was incredible.
Please review LIVE IN EUROPE,1972.
Rory was the last guardian of faith. A true rock spirit.
Some other tracks you might check out: Walking on Hot Coals, Tattooed Lady, Shadow Play, Out on the Western Plain, Souped Up Ford, Follow Me
Very cool! First time hearing a Rory studio track. I discovered him a few years back myself. I do know he’s a legend in Ireland. I had read that Rory didn’t care about changing anything about his music in order to become rich and famous. Very distinct style and he is revered by many famous guitarists as a huge influence. Slash and Joe Bonamassa to name a couple.
@Gravity King Brian May of Queen also credits Rory Gallagher for his sound. He talks about him in a YT video. He used to follow him around as a young man & when he finally met him he asked him how he came up with the special sound he pulled out of his guitar & Rory graciously told him.
There is a Bronze Statue Of Rory Gallagher in the middle of the street in Ballyshannon Co Donegal
Ireland, he is holding his Guitar, seeing Gallagher is a well known Donegal name
I just expected he was born there, Great Talent, gone to soon RIP. 🙏🇮🇪
This guy is beyond great. You need to check out some of his live shows. Checkout his guitar in some of his videos, it is beat all to hell.
Yes you need to see Irish Tour '74 A Million Miles Away is just breath taking
You should have done the Live version. Rory was the best Live.He lived for playing Live..
I am NOT a blues fan either, but this was a great song! The only thing I really know about Rory Gallagher is that Rush opened for him in 1974, and he opened for Rush in 1982! I think he was the opening act the first time I saw Rush on the Signals tour, but I only remember Rush from that night. Thought you'd appreciate the cool connection.
Great that you have played Rory, have a listen to A million miles away live from Irish Tour or tattood lady from Irish tour. Rory was the greatest.
Rory always should be listened live, studio recordings don't bring his true power.
RIP Rory Boy ☘️🎸💚
I started on guitar in 1964 and still playing. Beautiful NicknLex this song was great in the 70s, really enjoy seeing you people! Smiling.
ROOOOREEEEEEE!
Just glad someone else has heard this masterpiece.
Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher were both on the bill at the Isle of Wight music festival in the UK in 1970 and a reporter asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world. Jimi replied, I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher.
Rory is my all time favourite blues man, I was lucky enough to see him live a few times, and he was awesome !!!
Great Irish guitarist 🇮🇪❤️
You mentioned Hendrix: "According to lore, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jimi Hendrix was asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?” He is believed to have answered, “I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher."
Rory Gallagher was easy up there in the top 5 guitar player of all time
Rory live is the best....
Rory was (and still is) one of the best guitarrists ever!
RIP Rory Gallagher. In the studio he was great. Live he was amazing. For an amazing blues track apart from SRV try Sloe Gin by Joe Bonamassa
The Guitar players Guitar Player. The immortal Rory Gallagher (pronounced: Galla Her)
Definitely need to listen to his live work. Also, check out his first band Taste live at the Isle of Wight.
I thank God everyday for lettin me see 2 times Rory in my life.
Rory maybe is unknown to a lot of people but his influence is widespread. Guitarists like Brian May, Johnny Marr, The Edge and Alex Lifeson consider him an influence. His energy and style make Rory a must listen too. He never released a single just albums.
When I was first learning the guitar back in 74 I was trying my best to learn Shadow Play.🎶🎶👍🤘🤪
He is one of my faves since the 70's..you guys rock..keep em' comin! all my best..Kent inOhio
Rory!
Rory Gallagher was best known for his blues but he was also quite proficient at Jazz. If you listen to his early albums with his band Taste, you'll see the Jazz side. I personally don't like Jazz because it is very inaccessible when you're not a theory fan and I just don't enjoy it. I think your criticism of Blues is the I IV V standard progression with a pentatonic played over it. Why is it popular? because it's accessible and easy to understand.
Blues is not really that simple, it's about feel and phrasing, call and response. People like SRV are all about filling the spaces but played properly, the spaces are extremely important to convey the feel. Watch Freddie King "Have you ever loved a woman" and his pauses are so perfect, it riles up the mood. Or, the timing of Peter Green in "I need your love so bad".. sure, it's pentatonic but that misses the whole point - and that's why Jazz lovers don't get it, they are about the chords and the modes and the theory behind it all. I really don't care what a Bm7 11 chord is, it doesn't rock.
