Rory Gallagher - A Million Miles Away (Irish Tour 74 Live)
Rory was an absolute BEHEMOTH on the guitar. Truly a legend who played some legendary guitar licks. RIP Rory and thanks for the music!
Rory Gallagher, Bullfrog Blues live. SMOKING!!!!
Rory was on the same level as Jeff Beck, Hendrix, and SRV. Just amazing. Watch him live. He also lets his band take the limelight as well. Great musician
Hendrix é acima de todos!
Gerry McAvoy. Belfast's greatest ever bass player.
Brian May of Queen says he got his sound from watching Rory as a kid & asking him questions which Rory always listened to & responded to. He says Rory was always kind to him & his friends never acting like a star that didn't have time, he was a real person. No one ever says anything bad about Rory. Rush's first tour was as the warm up band, they said he was so supportive of them, ten years later Rush was the headliner with Rory as the warm up, they repaid his kindness.
Amber, you are absolutely right! They do not make music like this anymore. Excellent observation. This is the music of my day.
he is fantastic there is alive version of him doing bullfrog blues it is a must
Ohhh! Thank you! Here we go. Enjoy! Jay, Gerry McAvoy on bass . Rory's band members always had lots of room to move around. Catch yer breath! Yes. There are very few reactors out there digging Rory right now. It's great you guys are here. Thanks again.
The amount of space they give each other adds so much. Who said the secret wasn't what you played, but what you didn't play? Can't remember. Not an easy skill to keep; saying it is one thing, these guys did it. Even the bass may sound busy, with the riffs spanning more than an octave, but there's still a crispness about it. It keeps their music still fresh today, and for some might be a bit disconcerting at times, the recording is hardly 'sweetened' at all. They weren't outside the box, they were never issued one.
WOW. That was great. Another artist that I wouldn't have heard of, if not for you guys. AWESOME.
It's such a wonderful journey to be taken on!
I said it many times before and I am going to say it again, it just doesn't get any better than Rory Gallagher and his band.
Indeed you need more Rory Gallagher. You should hear him do some shreading if you think that was good
Rory Gallagher was an absolute master of the blues sound! Wait till you hear CLUTCH! You can hear the influence he had on this Maryland band.
From his debut self-entitled album. Rory truly could do it all. 💯👍👍🌟
Rest in Peace Rory
You have found real gold here. Best guitarist I have ever heard. Taken away from us too soon.
I git to see Rory three times. He was never billed as the main act any of the times I saw him. But when we got back in the car to go home he was the main act to everyone I went with.
Brian May attributed his guitar tone to Rory as he took his time to help out a fan and player.
Kind soul he was!
Rory is such an underappreciated player. You got to do some stuff off of his live Irish Tour '74. "A Million Miles Away". Tatoo'd Lady" or "Walk on Hot Coals" Also Philby from Live in Montreux, and for a studio cut, the great love song, "I Fall Apart". Love it when reactors discover Rory as I did. First time I heard him I said "who is this, and how is it possible I have never heard of him before!".
That Irish Tour is an absolute classic album.
Ohh lordy, help my ❤️. We were so into blues, jazz, blues rock in the 70's...listening to Rory again warms my soul! RIP, greatest guitarist!
Thanks for reacting to Rory he don’t get the recognition he deserves Greatest musician to come out of Ireland 💚💚💚
Other great players like Brian May, Keith Richards ,Pete Townsend Jimmy Page and Johnny Marr were inspired by Rory , recognition from your peers is the best . Rory always refused to release singles and shunned the pop star game or he would have been more widely known, great musician and song writer ,but on stage performing he was at his best.
We lost a guitar legend far too young the day we lost Rory. He was incredible and sorely missed.
Rory was great! Nice you have him on the channel.I was a fan since I saw him on tv in the mid 70es.He was playing that worn out strat and dressed in flannel shirt and jeans like we kids did those days.No glamorous looking, just interested in music and giving everything he had on stage.Check for some live videos like Tatto´d lady,Bullgrog blues,Cradle rock...Satisfaction guaranteed!
1st track of Rory that I heard was Bullfrog Blues, the live version, still 1 of my favourites.
i was lucky to see Taste in '70 at the IOW, just after i turned 16 and a few years later pestered some pals to come with me to the Cambridge Corn Exchange to see him as some had never seen him. When he did Bullfrog Blues and he played the first lick the whole crowd just stood there and looked at their arms, at each other, because of the goosebumps. Never seen anything like that in my life, this was just the 3 piece band, i never really cared for the version with the keyoboard player.
@@PadraigCarthyThank you for sharing the story of that amazing experience! I had never heard of him, and reading all these comments and hearing J&A's reaction and the music makes me realize that I have been missing out.
@@NavvyMom by all accounts he was a lovely man, and although i was never fortunate enough to meet him i witnessed his generousity many times. with Taste at the IOW there was a schedule to follow, so his set lasted a specific time, but later he was renowned for not leaving the stage until the fans got their fill. i went to one gig where the police were called as the set went way, way beyond the scheduled time, and the organisers had to come on stage mid song, ask him to stop, and explain the situation. there are also stories of venues actually turning off the power temporarily to stop him, and i remember they did it once when i saw him, so he simply got the acoustic out and played few numbers until he was persuaded to leave. he was born to entertain, adored playing and would play for anybody, anywhere
"Bullfrog Blues" live version.....
Strap in and Hold on!
...and then, when you think you can't take any more, go for Shadow Play. Not the Montreux '79 version, but the Belfast '84 version, where the music fans, starved by artists who wouldn't set foot in the place due to the bombs and the guns (I know, I was one of them), just went nuts.
Shadow Play, Ulster Hall, Belfast 1984. It doesn't get any better.
Not into all that ‘who’s the greatest guitar player ever’ thing, but I do enjoy listening to Rory more than any other. His live stuff is out of this world.
Truly love Rory G.,he was so underrated in the industry but loved by all the giants in the business. He was the guitarist that other guitarists loved talking about.RIP
To this day his guitar lines are still very unique, especially considering how many others benefited from his playing, none of them actually do that same kind of things he did. Incredible dynamics, no fear of empty space where others might have tried to fill it in. And the guys behind him are a freaking synchronized machine, again doing a few things that still are uncommon since.
"Shin Kicker!"Live! Blow you away! Gerry Macavoy Super bassplayer still playing& giving interviews of time with Rory!
❤❤❤❤❤ And Bullfrog Blues from the Old Grey Whistle Stop show ❤❤❤❤❤
Yes live from Montreux
@@6916dogABSOLUTELY 💯 %
Anything from his montreux live sets, i especially like shadowplay
My favourite guitarist of all time the late great Rory Gallagher! Was lucky to see him live back in the day and he always gave his all in every performance. A truly awesome blues/rock guitarist!
You should check out the live performance of the track Shadow play. Just awesome stuff!
Cheers guys
Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it is like being the greatest guitar player in the world. He said, "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher".
This song was released in 1971, but I still consider it to be music of the Woodstock era. Brilliant!
Omg u found Rory Gallagher. Saw him in early 1970s in Manchester, England. Was deaf for 24 hours after. It was so loud. One of the best guitarist ever. Tattoo'd Lady one of my favourites of his. Another musician taken too soon. RIP Rory. Xx
Rory toured a lot, but if it was the Free Trade Hall circa 1974 then I was there!!
@@stevemoss7793 Yes it was. Great gig.
Guys you have to try and react to Rory live, it`s just a whole different experience.
Live is where he shined like no other...
All right my babies.... Long time listener first time hearing this ‼️ I've never heard of this artist, but the fluidity of his guitar playing is spot on ‼️💯🔥🎸😎👍🏻
Great track from Rory's first solo album. 1971 Saw Rory leave his old band Taste behind, Gerry McAvoy on bass played on all of Rory's albums afer this. Wilgar Campell on drums and Vincent Crane on piano of Atomic Rooster fame.
That one hit Amber in her soul, I can tell. He's been doing that to me for 50 years.
What a treat that was
Thank you guys, I have been requesting more Rory almost daily. Please do Shin Kicker (live at Montreaux 1977) and Bullfrog Blues from the Old Grey Whistle Stop show. You will be blown away. ❤❤❤❤
Absolutely - these two tracks are the essence of a live Rory concert. I saw him perform twice with his band Taste (in 1969 and 1970) and then about twenty times with the band he formed after Taste split. Catfish and Sinner Boy (live at the Isle of Wight) are great tracks from the early years (even though this was not the first Taste line up!), but the real masterpieces are from his live performances in the 70s. He could play electric guitar (Stratocaster, Telecaster, Gretsch and others!), acoustic, mandolin, ukulele, even sitar. And saxophone too. The quieter tracks on the first album after Taste are also fantastic. Rory could play blues, rock, rock n roll, folk, country and all at the highest level. More Rory reactions - PLEASE!!!!
Listen to Rory Gallagher live in Europe or On the Boards with his original band Taste. Thank you for playing Rory in its entirety. His famous Fender Strat is now owned by his brother after the death of Rory. And he can't play!!!! They've just sold John Lennons' 12 string Framer for a couple of million. Rory's strat must be worth squillions in the right hands. Thank you Rory for my love of Irish/English Blues.
Going up for auction now
That was incredible. What a ride. His vocals sound a little like clapton. Guitar work was incredible
No such thing as the greatest guitar player in my book, but when it comes to my personal favourite it has to be Rory Gallagher. I've seen Hendrix, Kossof, Clapton, Santana, and many other greats but he's the only one that gets the hair on the back of my neck standing. Certain guitatrists have a unique sound thats copied by others but his sound is truly unique to the point i've never heard anything remotely like it.
I never saw Carlos, Jimi or Paul live did see Eric ,Mark Knopfler and the great Rory all were good but Rory was mesmerising . I'm in my 70s now so please allow me to give Jose Feliciano an honourable mention too .
@@barblessable wow, thats a leftfield mention. people tend to forget/not realise how good he was
Rory's the greatest
@@fredholmes6284 he's your personal favourite. for every 1 who says Hendrix i'll show you 1 who says, Rory, Clapton, Kossof, etc, etc
I love how much you folks are enjoying this under appreciated artist! You MUST now listen to A Million Miles Away, from the Irish Tour live ‘74. You will not be disappointed.
I second this!!! It's my favourite live recording of all time....by anyone!!!!!!
Another great acoustic song off that record is As the Crow Flies.. unbelievable.....
Rory was a true maestro, no other way to put it. Consummate guitarist/musician/showman, but still humble. Everyone is right, he's ranked with Hendrix, SRV, Beck, no two ways about it.
I'd love to see you react to John Lee Hooker & Canned Heat covering Whisky & Women.
It always gets my attention when I see the Rory Gallagher mentioned. His stuff has a true 60s-70s guitar rock feel.
I'm impressed by how far the two of you have come in just a few short years. So much so that you've learned how to discern real talent when you hear it. ❤
Keep checking out Rory. Amazing guitarist. Some great live performances are Bullfrog Blues and Shin Kicker.
Check out his live performance of Shadow Play. He was simply awesome
Saw Rory back in Detroit in the 80s. Fantastic concert and just seemed like one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. I've seen most of the what are considered the classic rock greats and Rory is still at the top of my list! This guy lived his guitar and was so personable even on stage. Very down home and you could feel his music was his life! RIP Rory. You are loved and missed.
If you want to bear Rory at his most rocking check out “ Souped up Ford “ a guitarist on full throttle Saw him many many times and always delivered over 2 and half hours of great music
"Goin' to My Hometown" Rory Gallagher - Irish Tour 74
Yes
YOU REALLY had to see Rory and his battered old strat live to get what he was about, I was lucky enough to see him twice, his playing and writing are evident on record but live he was fantastic , his enthusiasm and joy on stage was infectious ,he toured constantly but he developed a fear of flying which led to his addiction to prescription drugs this combined with alcohol caused his liver to fail ,he got a transplant but developed an infection after surgery and died aged 47 , check out GHOST BLUES , or IRISH TOUR documentary films about this very likeable and super talented musician sadly missed but never forgotten.
Excellent! Irish Tour '74 album and video! Gerry McAvoy on bass!
Jay & Amber, I’d recommend bluesman Albert Collins. These are songs from his Grammy Nominated album Ice Pickin’.
"Master Charge” (about his wife’s use of his credit card);
"Conversation with Collins" (story of his wife’s girls night out/him babysitting);
"Honey, Hush! (Talking Woman Blues); "Too Tired"; "When the Welfare Turns Its Back on You" !!! Saw him live, incredible.
Jeez, all the novels
Heck yea dudes first ppl I’ve ever seen react to Rory he’s so awesome
Bullfrog blues on the old grey whistle test 😮will suit yous guys down to the ground, solos on piano, bass drums and of course Rory on guitar.
That got swampy at just the right time. Then it turned into pure joy!
Probably one the finest songs you have ever played. I saw Rory many times live and the Rory Gallagher album this is taken from is well worth listening too.
Saw Rush in 1982 on the Signals tour and Rory Gallagher opened up for them.
I also saw that tour. November 9th 1982, Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit. It was the night before I left for Navy Basic training. Had never heard of Rory and walked out that night a fan for life.
8 years earlier, it was Rush opening for Rory and they never forgot that.
The exact same for me, except I saw them in Wichita KS. Walked away as a fan!!
Awesome pick! Keep going down this rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed! And thanks for expanding your reactions far beyond the boundaries of everyone else, you two are keeping great artists and their music alive.😊
Follow Me..... Rory Gallagher Live in Belfast. This is an amazing live version of the song Follow Me. You won't be disappointed. You also get a good look at Rory's iconic 1961 Fender Stratocaster. Legend has it that it was the first Strat ever sold in Ireland. Another great guitarist to check out is Frank Marino. He's great live too. Check out Frank Marino Live at the Agora Theatre - It's Begun to Rain. It's a 12 minute listen, but well worth it.
A Myth Legend from Ireland! Thanks for this!
Now I really want you to hear Crest of a Wave from his 2nd album Deuce from 1971. It'll blow your mind, like it did mine, years ago.
Hozier puts Rory in his favourite Irish musical legends alongside the cranberries, U2, Van, Sinead and Aslan.
Thank you-that was a wonderful reaction to watch and you were clearly enchanted by his ability to make his guitar convey all the emotions human vocals just couldn't. Rory live was a force of nature that you need to watch and hear. For a live recording that will totally blow you away, check out the YT audio recording of "Just a Little Bit" from '74 at My Fathers Place in Roslyn NY. FIRE!!! Rockpalast 1979 had a lot of amazing video moments, including the 12+ minute version of "Tattoo'd Lady". And for a stunning live blues number, I highly recommend the 1984 Ulster Hall, Belfast, version of "I Wonder Who".
Rory is the man......
In the 70s across the UK and Ireland, there were two Big 'music' shows. One was 'Top of the Pops', and it was what it said it was, - pop music/chart music, which might include rock from time to time, but had everything in between too. If you watched it religiously, you had a certain understanding of music but probably remained blissfully unaware of people like Rory Gallagher.
The other show was 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', and this is where hard-boiled rock happened. I remember as a young kid levitating more to it. I didn't understand the music so much but it seemed much more cool, I liked the seriousness of the intent. Looking back now; proud is the wrong word, but I do feel privileged to have been part of the original audience, even at so young an age, for this kind of rock in its very time and place. Every time I hear Lynyrd Skynyrd now, I realise that's the 70s I miss most, more than I miss the Top of the Pops 70s.
Been a fan of RG since mid 70s. One thing is for sure, ya gotta check out his live video clips, phenomenal! He played with high energy and passion. He can definitely jam! I highly recommend Shadow Play, Moonchild, Laundromat, Last Of The Independents, Pistol Slapper Blues, Too Much Alcohol, and Hands Off! ✌️
Rory's long term bass player was Gerry McAvoy. He's still playing with his own band and plays every year at Rory Fest, a celebration of Rory's life and work in Ireland.
One of Brian May’s favorite guitar players! I’ve never heard this, so thank you for reacting to it.
The first concert I attended was Rory, Fleetwood Mac, and Deep Purple in 1972. Rory put on an incredible live show.
Shadow Play live. Love his beautiful smile💙
That edginess Amber is hearing comes from the Celtic influence that were always a big part of Rory's sound.
You need to explore more Rory
HAVE TO LISTEN TOO FROM THE LIVE IN EUROPE 1972 ALBUM...
THE FABULOUS MESSIN WITH THE KID AND THE TREMENDOUS
IN YOUR TOWN !!
ONE OF THE BEST LIVE I SEEN AT THE TOWN HALL BIRMINGHAM 1973
SUPERB HIM ALWWYS
🎸🍻🎸
Thank you for this segment I had not been aware of RORY
I would put forward "Rory Gallagher - (Live At The San Diego Civic Center, CA, USA / 1974), but you can see the bands chemistry in action, in the second video which is "Do You Read Me" Rock goes to College. both Live tracks show his talent, and how the band Gel's in concert.
Cut to the chase...listen to Rory's "Live in Europe" album. Absolute banger. High octane blues rock.
I love the old school distortion box. I had one for my strat, and it sounded just like that. Jazz rock groove. Love it.
Crazy overtones
Don't forget that his Vox AC30 added just another amount of overdrive too
Rory was fantastic. You should also check out Tommy Bolin, another killer player
Absolutely, he also got high praise from Jimi Hendricks. Shake the devil is a rocker or Post toastee.
Jay & Amber: It's funny, as I look back, I remember going to record stores back in the 70s; and as I would thumb through all the different Rock records, I would come across Rory Gallagher LPs. For whatever reason, I never explored him or his music. This song you're reacting to tonight is the first time I've ever heard any Rory Gallagher. I will now explore more of his material. The guy was brilliant.
Rory is a true jewel among guitar players!❤❤
Rory is a Legend,And Gerry on bass 👌👌
So glad I had a chance to see him in concert a couple years before he passed, in a small club! One blistering solo after another with soulful Irish vocals…..and excellent songs he wrote too.
Jay and Amber, you always bring joy to my day. Love to both of you. Thank you for making me smile. Great song choice. ❤️🌹
In all these polls for the greatest guitarist of all time, they are all just playing for second place as Rory is miles ahead in first. Saw him three times throughout his career and he is quite simply the finest guitarist I have ever seen and I've see a few! Please check out 'Out on the Western Plain and Want Ad blues from the Cork Opera house, Rory playing acoustic, just the finest thing you can put in your ears!
Back to the good stuff. Kudos to the recommender. Rock the blues.
Like a full body massage for your ears.
A friend is a great fan of this guy and says he is one of the best guitarists ever. This track was really good-Colin Ward
Have a listen to his first band The Taste. Specifically "What's Going On" from 1970. It's absolutely incredible and more up tempo.
FIRE FIRE FIRE!
He was magical❤
"Used to Be" (live) from the 1976ish German Beat Club tv appearance. Bonus - you'll get to see Gerry McAvoy, Rory's longtime badass bassist, in action.
more Rory please
Wow! He is great! Love his lead and beat!
This is why Rory Gallagher is my favorite blues rock guitar players. Simply amazing and he was a very genuine nice guy. So many of the great guitar players credit him as their influence. His acoustic stuff is also amazing. Brian May from Queen said he got his sound from Rory and Eric Clapton said Rory was the reason he got back into the blues music.
Amazing musician. So glad so many are getting to hear him!
I'm 68yrs I met Rory when I was 15 in 1971 absolutely one of my favourite blues guitarist ever 💖💫💖💫💖💫💖
@@marietheresahughes2911 that would have been amazing!
Amber, I love the shirt!
Great reaction too, great song!
It's about time😊
Give a listen to “ Going to my Hometown “ from Live in Europe “ Rory rocking it out on a mandolin
Nice, always worth hearing Rory, he was a killer guitar savant in his own way. Try Bulldog Blues for more excellence from the man, RIP. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
If you liked this, try some Wishbone Ash, awesome dual guitar band that shared bills with Rory back in the day... 🎸🎸
Please check out Rory with his first band, Taste. There are great videos of them live at the Isle of Wight (where Jimi saw him). It’s an iconic performance. Try “What’s Going on” or “Sugar Mama”
Do Steve Vai.
"Tender Surrender" live.
It will change your brain.
Great Rory reaction, y'all!
Good song good reaction
