It's known as "Pulling Rank" - a senior officer will demand something and the underlings will usually follow orders. They try it on Civilian Staff too but don't really have enough clout to enforce their demands as the "Civvies" have their own bosses and will usually only answer to them (not the uniformed officers).

During a stop and search :--
When stopped, the police should tell you a number of things prior to carrying out the search.
If this procedure is not followed, the search is likely to have been unlawful. Officers should explicitly tell you:
    # The reason they want to search you - a clear explanation of the reasons for the search
#What the specific legal basis of the search is
#What they expect to find from the search - the object they're looking for
#Their name and ID number or warrant card (if they are not in uniform)
#The police station they are based at
#Where and how you can access a copy of the record of the stop and search

A few months ago, my crazed, drugged up neighbour threatened to stab me. I phoned the police and shouted, terrified, down the phone that this lunatic was making threats, and he could hear him over the phone shouting obscenities at me.
No one came out to attend the incident, and the guy on the phone said, and I quote, “it was probably just bravado” on the part of my neighbour, and not to worry.
Two PCSOs came out three weeks later to do a follow up to the incident that wasn’t even attended in the first place.

They then said they'd do nothing, but she'd get a visit from PCSOs. They didn't come. A week later I came across one of the police and he asked if they'd been round, I replied "of course they haven't".

They're very reasonable compared to what they were like when I was young (the 70's). Back then they would have taken him in and beaten him up or search him and find miraculously find something in his pocket, you'd never get away with talking to them like that in a million years.
I would say though that for just looking in the window they would probably have just told him to clear off at first, they didn't like paperwork.

@@montygemma comparing them to what they once were is just evidence that they've always needed the sack... its not really a case for keeping them in that role just cos they might not be as overtly bent as they used to be .. they're still bent and tend to want to pretend that they aren't a bit more, is all

@@montygemma reason they arent jumping on AB after him talking back to them is cos live streaming and video audio evidence .. wasn't around in the 70s so they acted like a bunch of anonymous trolls in a chatroom, thugging their way through their days big time

Destroyers of the freedom that 800,000 British service men and women in WWII alone sacrificed their lives for. Unforgiveable - we might as well have handed our country over to the Nazi's the way we the people are treated by our government and its agents. At least 800,000 would have got to have a life.
