    I swear I was just thinking yesterday about whether self-help videos could ever be created in a way that didn't also get into a kind of reactionary, "personal responsibility" ethic, which i feel can be discouraging for some (including myself). I've been pretty depressed this past week as i dealt with some medication issues. I saw this video and decided to do the dishes while it played. Now, i feel like i've accomplished at least one thing today. Thank you!

      In two sided sinks like these I like to fill one with soapy water to soak dirty dishes in as like a pre-rinse and then I'll actually clean and finish rinsing them in the unfilled side so I don't have to have the water constantly running.

    I personally like the para-social thing, in so far as like... you share your thoughts while doing tasks. It functions similarly to body-doubling. I am incredibly more productive in ways that don't force me to dissociate through my tasks, when I have even 1 other person around to interact with simultaneously. I often ask, 'Can you help me do dishes later?" and that actually just means, "will you sit in the kitchen with me while I do dishes?". Now I do have like... adhd, dpdr, asd etc... and with dpdr especially, I find engagement helps keep me grounded. Even when the other person isn't actively engaging with me, like, go ahead and scroll insta hun, you are giving me life by being present and letting me talk at you (or listen to you). Idk, I'm ND and that encompasses a wide range of things, so maybe this is too specific an experience to be broadly helpful.

(i still build IRL community, it’s just much harder.) i also agree that a lot of content is very individualistic but if it keeps someone like me (a mentally ill person) alive and continuing on with life, then it has value. we can’t dismantle if we’re dead. great video:)

    Hi! Very new subscriber here. From a Black Feminist perspective, self care always has been vitally important to revolutionary causes. Angela Davis talks a lot about how self care kept her sane during prison. Of course, self care has become more about what you buy rather than what you do.
    That being said, I’m enjoying watching you DO so far! Of course, there is monetary incentive in making content of it, but the same could be said in writing a book or being hired for a lecture. We all gotta eat!
    I love self care/self help that relates to specific communities ex. adhd, Black revolutionaries, artists, etc, and includes educations and action. I’m excited to see how your channel fits into all that. ✊🏽

  • @wanderinggstars

    I think self help content works well when you have a specific goal. like you are always gonna make stuff unique to you, you don't have to follow a template other people made. you can do things your own way

  • @alyssab90
    @alyssab90 8 месяцев назад +4

    I don’t think self-help is objectively bad but a lot of it is approached from a “I have all the answers and I’ll tell you what to do” type of way which sucks. Everyone is a work in progress and there is no real end point where you can truly fix all your problems. But we do all have stuff to work on.
    Even in the best possible future utopia, the need for some types of chores and doing silly little tasks will not disappear. I have trouble with executive functioning and stuff like this serves as a kind of “body doubling” that helps me get stuff done. I constantly slide in and out of having a super messy space depending on what else is going on in my life. I’m always trying to remind myself that cleaning for 10 minutes is better than not cleaning at all. So I got some stuff done while this video played :)

    people think self help is tony robbins, or jp. but self help can be therapy, or sobriety, or researching your mental health problems, or going on hrt. it shouldn't be your sole focus, but every organizer says you can't effectively help others if you're not taking care of yourself.

  • @tinabeanajustabean
    @tinabeanajustabean 8 месяцев назад +13

    People with ADHD and other neurotypical challenges often need "body doubles" in order to execute tasks big and small. Doubling is just like being in the same space as another person, bonus points if they're also doing the kind of things you need to do like cleaning, reading, writing, etc. I think that is at the core of what you're trying to describe here! And even people who ID as neurotypical probably find comfort, hence the popularity of this vloggy content!

    Lifestyle content has become some of my absolute favorite, and i don’t think it has to be “self help” unless you are actively trying to make it that. Your gym content was really motivating when I was starting my fitness journey, and with love Kristina’s content helped me figure out a house cleaning schedule that I can actually stick to. But neither of your content has ever come across as self help by any means

    I like this kind of content mostly cause of the people I listen to. I could honestly hear you talk about anything for minutes on end. It's rather relaxing and perfect for putting on in the background while I do stuff. It doesn't have to be something profound or really motivating. Just something to pass the time and help remind us that we're not alone in this. There's alot of videos I watch where I already know most of the points they're gonna make but I still like to watch it anyways since it's a good break from the constant gaslighting we experience irl. Videos like these are helpful to someone like me who doesn’t have a solid routine, it makes me want to actually get up and do things. I think its important to have a present self improvement resource for leftist online politics actually, especially in the 2020's now that we're inundated with doom and pessimism. We've strayed too far from the swagger and cohesion the 60's and 70's offered with hippie and punk aesthetics. they're a rallying cry for us. we tend to instinctively dismiss optics and its value on the left (somewhat justifiably) cause to its social violence against minorities but i think we made a bit of an overcorrection, the 2010's evolved the alt rightoid from skin head bozo to composed 'intellectual', and with zoomers slowly making up the forefront of online and irl socio-politics we have a chance to capitalise on this new wave. the early to mid 2020's will be and is 100% defined by a pull to the community offered by aesthetic, and a more nuanced approach to self help (especially working out, which is refreshing to see how appreciated and compassionate our take on exercise is). I doubt it'll be taken too openly cause it is kind of adapting right wing communing tactics for our own, but it does work.

    I might catch some flak for this in the comments, but honestly a countertop dishwasher completely changed the game for me. Even though they're not like CRAZY expensive as far as appliances go, I still couldn't afford one for a really long time, and as much as I don't like using Amazon, a buddy of mine recommended the Prime Store card, which you can use to split large payments into 6 monthly ones with no APR, and I hate to say it, but it did help a lot. If you have the money, or you can finance it without worrying about your credit score, I would strongly recommend getting one. My kitchen has never been cleaner, and I have more energy to do other, better things with my time

    I've just finished my dishes while listening to this. And I'm absolutely behind more leftist self-help content, or hell, more leftist content that isn't inherently political. This can be a good way to
    a) bring more people into lefty ideas indirectly, and maybe in a way that is not as intimidating, and that humanizes us as people. I don't think anyone of us is ONLY their ideology.
    b) make it a nice space for people who enjoy that content, especially if the biggest creators in that market are right wing or scummy (sigmarxism, for leftists that enjoy Warhammer 40K is a great example)
    c) Just helpful/entertaining in general.
    So I'm behind lefty self-help. Might not be for everyone, but no content is.

    Realistic self-help content from a fellow ADHD haver? I would consume. Noah, you are right in that these things could evoke something big; giving people some tools to help take control of their lives is important not only in a health sense, but also in gaining confidence. There is a lot of "self=help" like content that is unobtainable or unrealistic. Some is also just straight vibes and we watch it during sadboi midnight snacktime hours. I think you would do very good self-help content, so I am all for it.

    As someone who has consumed self-help content in the past it definitely can make an impact but the person has to actually want to change their life. Ignoring the "self" is something that happens a lot and instead of improving yourself you're consuming the content and just talking a big game. These gurus validate that by saying how great the community is and how there's so many people improving their lives. But they're mostly the same, just with a bigger ego. Those who actually take the advice and improve their daily lives don't stick around because it doesn't really take that much to improve your life when you're motivated to do so. I hope you get some motivated people looking to learn and improve. Because you can give a good left perspective.

    If it helps you and one other person you're doing A+ work. Definitely got me thinking of doing the dishes in my shower so I can take a shower!

    This is adorable and makes me happy and motivated to do my own dishes.
    You're a cool person with a beautiful personality and I'm excited for more content like this. I'm mostly just happy to hear the ramblings, it's just kinda cozy.

    I definitely find this type of thing helpful for me. I think the honest discussion about balancing wellbeing with doing stuff like organising is important. It can really hard sometimes and just being able to hear someone else put words to the thoughts feelings I have is grounding. It helps give me permission to take care of myself without devaluing the importance of trying to make change and take part in political action.

    Hi! Just wanted to share this helped me do my dishes as well, and because I watched some of your others you have posted later on this channel first (ie breadtube bedroom cleaning bonanza) I was also able to make myself lunch and take out my trash! Loved these videos!

    You should get a countertop dishwasher! It hooks right into your sink and it honestly helped me so much because washing dishes makes me feel like I'm gonna die so if I can just pop them in there, I actually get clean stuff!

    Also, check out Leah Lakshmi Piepzna Samarasinha's book the future is disabled. She has a chapter on pleasure activism that talks about this kinda stuff (and all her work is massively slept on by mainstream folk)

    idk about self help channels but videos like these help me a lot, watching just a cool guy yap and clean his dishes makes me want to do my dishes as well (thats probably that sense of community you were talking about, sharing our struggles and taking baby steps together) or posting a videos of you in the gym and talking about how it can get hard sometimes but youre here, seeing you make progress makes me want to take that first step as well
    and to your point about activism and politics, ive been wanting to do more for the world and community since 2020 but ive been in a constant burnout for a few years and only now, bcuz of watching content like yours or hasan's etc ive slowly built the courage to work on myself and in turn have the mental and physical capacity to make actual change and organize
    at the end of the day its always nice to have content like that to fall back on

    This is great and more people should do this to help others with chores, having buddies is the best way to do these type of menial tasks. But as someone who has taken care of dishes since prepubescence I'm having a hard time watching you do them in single file, one fork at a time.
    Props for cleaning your sink, a surprising amount of people don't.

    Homie, this may be more of those anecdotal unquantifiable comments but I can't tell you how much I have been wanting and honestly NEEDING content like this. It helps me a ton but I hate the reactionary nature of most of the channels that make this type of content, so seeing this content from someone who has good politics I agree with and acknowledges what the real problems are and that this individualistic approach won't fix the issues, BUT it can and does help some of us that need and want this content is super helpful. Seriously thanks dude. If you consistently post videos I will consistently watch them and it will GENUINELY help me out. So just another vote for more of this community.
