One day, I came across Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series; in one of the episodes, he uses a Geiger counter and it produces those same "clicks". Enlightenment occurred! :D
It's amazing how much love and work was put into this game. Astounding, even today, let alone 1998. Imagine what this game could've been with a few more months in development.
Damn imagine if the warning for nerve gas was "Deadly neurotoxin detected." Though I guess this came out way too early for a Portal reference to make sense.
Nerve Gas was planned to be a time-based damage effect that did 5 damage each second for up to 16 seconds, totaling at a possible 80 max, the most lethal of the slated time-based damages. The Antidote Canister/Antitoxin Syringe shown in this video would have countered its effect. In the final game, only the Poisonous Biohazard damage type performs any lingering time-based damage.
Just sticking faithfully to the cut content that can be cleanly restored, I don't think a mod of this kind would be all that interesting. Much of the cut content shown in these videos have only very minor effects if re-implemented or are only small remnants of features that were never completed, hence there's nothing to re-implement outside of rebuilding from scratch. It would be nice if one could pick and choose the small things to restore, but code changes require a fully compiled mod which must have everything.

Does anyone else think this voiceover sounds therapeutic? I suppose that was by design to make it feel like the HEV suit is alive and caring for Gordon.
I always enjoy the details of the hud even especially when in different mod such as Wanted!, TFC, Counter Strike, etc... Especially when they have their own custom Danger Diagnoses.
Some of these work differently than I assumed playing this originally. I believed the various 'injury detected' warnings were triggered by reaching different health levels, not on the damage inflicted.

Health kits are a replenishment for the HEV suit's healing capabilities
It apples anti toxins for chemicals
Morphine and systematic applied pressure for fractures
Biofoam sealant and later vitamins for blood loss.
It heats the user in cold temperatures.
By default the suit is made up of alloys along with hazmat, fire retardant and anti corrosive, apparel
QuiteDaPlayer_ But then, why are Adrian and Barney able to use it? even one of the officers tries in Unforeseen Consequences (the one that died next to it, right after killing the zombie)
WassapDude94 I imagine it has a compartment for syringes bandages sutures anti bodies and pain killers for that sort of thing
Also the liquid may well be multi purposed
Although it can fuel a system designed to heal it could well be an antiseptic agent or blood thicker or just a strong substance used to seal wounds for bandaging
Honestly I don't know everything and I'm mostly theorising but it kinda ruins it if you over think it too much
QuiteDaPlayer_ Yeah, it probably works like the H.E.V Charger, it works on every type of suit/armor
That nerve gas symbol reminds me of the Civil Protection from 2.
Courage gas mask
@Adam Demeter Auf Wiedersehen Dummkopf!
When I saw the nerve gas icon I thought it would diagnose a Gimp attack
The HEV was pretty much *half* of what made Half-life so awesome from an aesthetic standpoint.
Really nails home how incredibly screwed freeman would be without it.
This feels like an informational video HEV scientists would watch at black mesa during training 😂
0:27 Zeus, 02 Arena, Monster Hand, Fidget Spinner, Beyblade, Drunk, Spiked Cube, Psycho Mantis
Underrated comment
“Ahh! I see you like to play games from VALVE!”
Psycho mantis?!
@@nesto6687 a Hind D?
@@nesto6687 final boss of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Psycho Mantis is a powerful boss capable of psychic abilities like reading your thoughts and memory card, and even "moving" your controller by using the vibration motor in the controller. The only way to defeat her is to stop her from being able to read you. She also wears a mask much like the one shown here.
I don't need Christmas presents with videos like this
Man this game was way ahead of its time
The morphine shot limit was clever. That's a detail I even forgot when I had military first aid training. Talk about love in detail.
Unmatched atmosphere over any other game i’ve ever played. 20 years and these sounds still play in my mind all the time
Guy: "What's your name?"
Gordon: "..."
Guy: "Uhm okay"
I'm really enjoying these videos. Do you have any more planned?
There are many videos planned. It's just a matter of finding the time to set aside to make them.
Gordon Freeman you enjoyed being tortured? Good
can I leave some suggestions? I have dozens of trivia for that kind of videos
Kirill Marine Well, seeing that I'm tough as nails, all I can say is "Tis' but a scratch."
Gordon Freeman if valve is holding you hostage, blink thrice.. oh wait
5:38 The damage taken is biohazard, but the sign says radiation. FAIL.
I bet this video is shown to every employee of Black Mesa who is about to work with HEV suit.
Hear a question, what is morphine for? Do you do less harm or something like that?
The morphine shots are just a cosmetic detail. It has no gameplay effect.
Ah ok, thanks for answering
It's essentially an in-story method of explaining why Gordon doesn't curl up into a fetal position and cry for the remainder of the game when sustaining a serious injury
(Morphine) Contains bit of poppy seed which morphine is technically considered heroin (Common Drug) which in a large dose from it will leave the drug like effects and,
It is used to numb pain and it has other effects...
It's a really nice touch that there is a timer on the morphine shots since overdose can be fatal.
For years, I never understood those "clicks" that were produced when you got close to radioactive material... Not only did I not ask (somewhat naive teenager for you!) but my parents didn't comment/care either... (I suppose they were also in the "it's just a game" mentality--"why would you take anything from it seriously?"...)
One day, I came across Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series; in one of the episodes, he uses a Geiger counter and it produces those same "clicks".
Enlightenment occurred! :D
they use the same glowing green shit i just assumed all of it was radioactive
yiff yiff ikr
It's amazing how much love and work was put into this game. Astounding, even today, let alone 1998. Imagine what this game could've been with a few more months in development.
The gas one was used, I remember seeing it quite often maybe it was in multiplayer
Some random idiot you don't know perhaps the medic's poisonous medkit from Team Fortress Classic?
CUPOFBRAINZ Oh shit you're right
Haha, welp, all I can say is: I saw that symbol a *lot* many keyboard were harmed in my childhood :)
Some random idiot you don't know In CS 1.5 too, when you swim un artic water
CUPOFBRAINZ Same, always a medic conc jumping into your base and giving you aids
Damn imagine if the warning for nerve gas was "Deadly neurotoxin detected."
Though I guess this came out way too early for a Portal reference to make sense.
Have a very safe day.
Wonderful touch.
Brilliant as always, Marph. Keep it up.
I love how the guy who made HL2JKS redubbed all the HEV sound files with his own voice. Even the ones that are never used!
What's the name of this ambient soundtrack I love so much?
Vague Voices from the Half-Life soundtrack
eli's scrapyard background music
MeatNinja it’s called Black Mesa inbound from half life 1 and 2
Literally 4 different answers xD
It's such a cool costume. It is unclear why some of the options were disabled, such as oral notification of an electric shock.
What effect would nerve gas have had?
Nerve Gas was planned to be a time-based damage effect that did 5 damage each second for up to 16 seconds, totaling at a possible 80 max, the most lethal of the slated time-based damages. The Antidote Canister/Antitoxin Syringe shown in this video would have countered its effect.
In the final game, only the Poisonous Biohazard damage type performs any lingering time-based damage.
MarphitimusBlackimus Ah, okay. Do you ever plan on re-implementing cut content into the game?
Just sticking faithfully to the cut content that can be cleanly restored, I don't think a mod of this kind would be all that interesting. Much of the cut content shown in these videos have only very minor effects if re-implemented or are only small remnants of features that were never completed, hence there's nothing to re-implement outside of rebuilding from scratch. It would be nice if one could pick and choose the small things to restore, but code changes require a fully compiled mod which must have everything.
MarphitimusBlackimus Fair enough, that makes sense.
MarphitimusBlackimus "Hazardous Course 2" Have Nerve Gas.
Today for the first time i beated the first Half Life. I knew the series since the beggining, but i didnt had a PC back then, and eventually when i got my firsr computer it wasnt very powerfull and i focused on other games. A few years ago i purchased the entire collection on Steam, and now that i had the time i beated the entire first game on 2 days straight.
Fan For Life. A masterpiece, i even forgived some bugs i encountered but the game is a master class of game design. Now i understand why everyone loves this series.
Now, onto HL2.
The HEV suit is cute! CUTE !
What?
HEV suit best waifu confirmed
We have gotten to the point where people find sexual attraction to Hazmat suits
Yes! She informs you about danger, cares for your well-being and you're literally inside her all the time. Now that's what I call a waifu :D
Ve Ci she sounds like a grandma lol
0:44 Here comes the PTSD.
great video as always about the intricacies of our favorite armored suit!
could you do a video on NPC interactions like scientists and security guards talking to each other?
"I don't know if we should go any further t-this doesn't look right."
3:32 Warning: Extreme ʰᵉᵃᵗ damage detected
The music in the video was my favourite in half life it gave me a certain feeling I don't know how to describe
Well the Gas icon is still in some games. For example in TeamFortrees Classic.
This entire video is very eerie
The nerve gas icon looks un-NERV-ingly scary.
Im kinda miffed that he used "burning" instead of heat
HEV Suit: "Warning, major slash detected."
Freeman wout a fucking arm: Yea, no shit...
thank you for making these videos Marph
Does anyone else think this voiceover sounds therapeutic? I suppose that was by design to make it feel like the HEV suit is alive and caring for Gordon.
I always enjoy the details of the hud even especially when in different mod such as Wanted!, TFC, Counter Strike, etc... Especially when they have their own custom Danger Diagnoses.

I like how anxious the HEV suit sounds at all times
No wonder why Gordon lived after such painful encounters. The HEV suit is keeping him alive. :D
If he wouldn't have picked up the HEV suit, he can easily die.
i wish i had that hazard suit
Nerve Gas icon scared shit out of me when I was kid.
True true
It looks like a face and i love that
U are a false og
It didnt get used
Love how with some damage type the suit also sounds more damaged
I just realised that the HEV suit is probably the character that speaks to Gordon the most in the entire series.
I missed the nice lady in the suit when I played Opposing Force.
Some of these work differently than I assumed playing this originally. I believed the various 'injury detected' warnings were triggered by reaching different health levels, not on the damage inflicted.
The French voice sounds waaay less sad and worried.
Russian sounds a little dominant
It's kind of funny to me how the tone of "Minor lacerations" is more casual while the "MAJOR LACERATIONS" is more emphatic, almost like it's tried to get through to you like 10 times. Like damn, it REALLY cares about your health.
Soo... how does Alyx not die when she's bitten by poison headcrabs in HL:A if she doesn't have a suit?
i love the attention to detail valve added to the HEV suit i didn't know it only administered morphine every 30 minutes, i just thought it was random when it said it.
So bro was high his whole adventure, explains why he survived headshots and shotguns, and GRENADES.
how to spam major fracture 1:59
All the content I've seen just makes me wish for a Half Life RPG in the System Shock style where we can explore the whole facility and interact with so much
I love stuff like this. New Vegas has a script when you die in the MK II Stealth Suit; You can hear it in the background frantically injecting you with med-x and stimpaks.
HEV Suit: *Internal bleeding detected :)*
Gordon: Oh that doesn't sound bad at all...
Gordon: [HP: 01 / 99] Sh*t.
Waaaat
