I actually like it how some (most?) of the Half-Life puzzles are solved by something mundane. Throw the switch off, so the water won't electrocute you. Throw the switch to turn on the lights. Weight one end of the platform to jump over from the other end.

Lead dust can cause reproductive harm, which might be Otis' real problem about "dying as a virgin". Thankfully the military doesn't seem to have that problem as much, since they have PT standards to keep up with and they would have a tendency to "get virginity out of the way" first.
I did that when I was a kid because the dark areas were actually dark, but nowadays I feel there's too much brightness in the engine, turning down the brightness makes everything else look dark.

I feel like it is the other way around. Back in the days you could ruin your entire playthrough by acting like an idiot in so many games, even by making slight mistakes you could make yourself stuck horribly or made the game incredibly difficult. Now it is practically impossible to stuck yourself by, for example, not having a specific item or ammo type. Whenever there is a puzzle in a modern game you always have everything you need to solve it right next to it. A vehicle shows up and there is an RPG just chillin on a bench two meters away from you. You need to blow something up and a pack of C4 is lying next to the X spot.
@@mcz1945 we can say that effectively there are no puzzles in modern games. Because solving modern puzzles does not require thinking and having a basic situational awareness. You know, when not one thing in the game is pointing or helping or explaining anything the game really feels alive. Modern games are like an endless tutorial/cutscene.
The invisible crowbars thing blew my mind! That's a very clever way of handling the player accidentally walking through the crowbar spot and being too far to the left or right to have picked it up.
Blue Shift may be not as long or rich in content unlike opposing force but I think is rather underrated and deserves more love and it's probably my favourite one of the series

It never occurred to me that ‘Methods of Crazy’ are specific cues, though in hindsight it makes sense those voice lines are scripted. The attention to detail in Half-Life never ceases to surprise me.
i really love this concept, because it proves that the game dev has to be more immersed in their world than the player ever could be (if they want their environments to be surprisingly convincing, like this). it's a beautiful thing
I find these little things so interesting. I never knew about that alternate puzzle solution. Gearbox did create two of the most iconic expansion packs ever made. I absolutely adore Opposing Force and Blue Shift. They really worked hard to create these and lived up to the Half Life name, rather than just make a quick buck.
Yeah-Blue Shift in particular is often seen as the smaller, inferior chapter of Half-Life, but I really enjoy the attention to detail, level design, and visual design of the expansion. I especially like how they made Xen in Blue Shift.

In the shooting range, you can find a guard that's chowing down on donuts instead of working on his shooting like the other guard there.
