Looks like whoever was scripting a teleporter room was having a breakdown
Yeah, seems like the author haven't enjoyed scripting this at all.
Admittedly it's a pretty big setpiece; many moving parts and scripted sequences they probably had to test out a lot too.
Can you imagine having to listen to that scientist give the same talk over and over again while trying to get the room working right?
@@noahwilliams8996 More likely it was listening to a lead deciding that it was time to implement a brand new feature at the very last minute, just when the level designer wanted to go home already

Fun fact: while falling in the elevator, you’re not really falling. Instead, the elevator slips down a bit, and then a texture of a wall rapidly goes up and up to create the illusion of falling
That sequence was already packed with stuff so that was good thinking on the developer’s end.
makes sense considering that computers weren't as powerful back then, programmers used to need to optimize everything as much as possible
Honestly I still wish that we had that kins of optimisation in modern games... would make them run so much better, and spare people hundreds of thousands of euros on a graphics card to get maybe 2 more FPS lol

Considering the limits of the Goldsrc engine, I still find it impressive how they managed to get that fancy train crash in. I don't understand how the barrels or the func_tracktrain managed to rotate while going on a track (which is the only way I can see them moving so smoothly). Parenting entities didn't exist in the Goldsrc engine, so it couldn't be a func_rotating parented to a func_tracktrain. Anybody mind explaining that bit?
I have no knowledge of mapping in Goldsrc, but just looking at that clip, the barrels and train don't start to rotate until after the train stops, so could it not be that they are made invisible, and swapped with clones that use func_rotating?
i dont think they're actual props with the original function, instead generic actors designed for that specific sequence
The thing is that there is actually two trains on this map, one with all the barrels and the train itself, and the impact one which doesn't have barrels on it. They're disappearing and appearing when needed.
The entity that is using on all moving objects in this scene isn't func_tracktrain, it's a regular func_train with set speed 'n stuff. The rotation is made by putting some numbers into "Angular Velocity (y z x)" I believe, so there's no need in parenting func_rotating onto another entity.
The fact that the plant in 2:34 is named Amanda kinda reminds me of this one indie RPG game called Suits where if you interact with the plants they all have female names.
