    I’ve always felt lead tip bullets were under rated. I hunted with them for years and years with great success. The lead tip may deform a bit going up the ramp but within 100 yards and in it shouldn’t affect accuracy much. Love your new radar. It’s going to give us a lot more info. I see more rifle tests coming. Thanks.

      If anyone is unsure who Paul Howe is, feel free to look up his resume.
      On his website his rifle ammo recommendations were simply “Soft points for people, bonded for barriers”
      I’d say that’s a pretty good endorsement for JSP ammo 😂

      @johnnorman7708 Год назад +3

      I'm a bit confused by the comment about lead tips being under rated. Lead tips or soft points have been the standard hunting bullet since the 1890s and smokeless powder. Designs features have varied a bit but a jacket and lead core exposed at the point was the basis of most hunting bullets for the last 125 or so years.

      The 20” barrel doesn’t cause much more damage at short distances (under 100 yards), the extra velocity simply extends the fragmentation range for 5.56. So essentially a 20” shot at 145 yards is equivalent to an M4 at 100.

    On some of your handgun testing, often the ammo has a large extreme spread. Sometimes the ammo out of a long barrel isn't much different than from the short barrel. With the Lab Radar you can tell just what the velocity is with each shot into the gel. This can explain why some of your results weren't what was expected.
    This new tool will greatly enhance your understanding of why things happen the way they do.

    It would be interesting to see some 50-yard velocities on some of the 10mm ammo that has been tested on the channel so far, especially the stuff firing 200 grain projectiles to see if it's still over 1,000 feet per second at that distance.

    • @paulscountry456
      @paulscountry456 Год назад +1

      You could drop up to 200 fps but likely less in the 150 range.A nine 115 gr plus p will drop 150 fps at 50.

    • @Kaelland
      @Kaelland Год назад +1

      @@paulscountry456 The reason the 50 yard numbers are important specifically to the 10mm is because one of Jeff Cooper's design specifications for the 10mm was to have a .40 caliber 200-grain bullet from a 5" barrel such that it would have a minimum target impact velocity of 1,000 feet per second at "at all reasonable combat ranges," which Jeff Cooper considered to be 50 yards (actually 50 meters, which is a touch over 54.6 yards, but close enough).
      That means it's hitting the target with 444 energy foot pounds at 50 meters.
      Tools likes to complain that a lot of the 10mm ammo he tests is not "real 10mm ammo," and in a lot of cases, he's right.
      But the only way to be sure is to find the velocity at 50 meters (or yards, it'll be close enough). If the projectile is 200 grains, then as long as the velocity is at least 1,000 feet per second, it's "real 10mm ammo."
      If the projectile is some weight other than 200 grains, then you can use the 50m/yard velocity and the weight of the projectile to calculate the energy foot pounds of the projectile at that distance, and then determine if it's in the ballpark of 444 energy foot pounds.
      If it's still making about 444 energy foot pounds at 50 meters, it's "real 10mm ammo."
      Measuring the velocity takes the guesswork out of the equation.

    Great video with some really interesting results at the Gel blocks , I was a bit surprised at how little difference there was with the energy ft/lbs there was , only 1ftlb for every inch of extra barrel length at the target , so it's not surprising there was so little difference in the distance travelled and the expansion , but It makes you wonder if both paying for those extra few inches of barrel, and carrying the extra ounces is worth it , of course with more powerful /larger calibres the differences will probably be more substantial and the extra length could also be vital for long range work . Thanks , catch You next episode , Shoot Straight Stay Safe & Stay Well.

      Good point. There is quite a bit of felt weight difference in that extra barrel length.

    My AR carbines all have 16" barrels. I was curious about rigging up an upper with a 20" barrel. Looking at the results of this test, I guess I'll save my money for bullets and stick with my 16".
    I appreciate your methodical testing. We all learn a lot about the common calibers we all use. Thank you

    I got some PMC 308 soft point 150gr. and that stuff is very accurate out of my savage 110 bolt gun. I know off topic, but also I see AAC has 45acp with XTP hollow points now. I hope it performs good like their 9mm did in your tests.

    Run the Doppler AND the chrono for the same shots - and compare the results? A stand alone test/video of them using 45 ACP (slow), 5.7 pistol or light for caliber 10mm (medium), and the fastest rifle round you got. Or any slow medium fast combo. Or just run both chronos every shot on some upcoming tests. Great addition to the channel!

    I have always thought that PMC was fairly decent ammo since first using it in back in the 80s. I think the factory that makes it in South Korea is also may be the primary supplier to the military in South Korea.

      I've always had good luck with it. Their hp handgun ammo performance leaves a lot to be desired, but never had any function issues.

    that was a great video! I’ve always loved PMC products but lately I’ve been having a hard time getting the soft point 223. I ordered a bunch about a month ago and now the usual online supplier seems to be out. Doesn’t really surprise me though. It would be great to see a comparison to the 223 hollow point.

    I’m a big fan of 55 grain soft points. I picked up a good amount of the federal champions when they were available.. and continue to pick up the pmc soft points as well. Great video! I like how you use different barrel lengths in many of your videos.

    I picked up a 18" radical firearms upper for cheap to have as an extra. Didn't want to load for it so I tried out 10 different factory offerings wasn't impressed. Few months later a buddy was looking for an upper. Sold it to him, he picked up 200 rounds of the PMC bronze 55gr sp. He said it shot great. He brought it over and I shot four 5 shot groups just over 1/2"! I was floored really want that upper back now. I saw him dispatch 7 raccoons with it to date from 20yds to 160yds all 7 were drt from a single shot.

    There’s a reason why standard cup and core soft points have been whitetail hunter’s gold standard for decades. They just work, I would say regardless of brand, a soft point is gonna do what a soft point does. These PMCs seem up to par with any other brand IMO.

    Gotta love a load that you can stock deep that works great im pretty sure I played a little bit of a role in you deciding to test these because im pretty sure I had told you about them in your video with the other federal champion SP's thanks for the test 👍 the best gel test on RUclips.. i love your gel tests there's always something good or something that i personally use to look forward to watching and these rounds are winners in my opinion for the price.. I usually use gold dots and Hornady TAP as my go to bullets in 556/223 but these are my 3rd choice and I keep some loaded up and put back.. the heavy OTM is a good choice too if you want deeper penetration and even 55 grain fmj will work its not ideal but it works lol those are pretty much all the different bullets i use in my AR's i like to practice with 55 grain fmj because its still something you can use for defense if you had too those PMC's are almost cheap enough to just practice with them but i like to conserve on my soft points and hollow points as much as i can.. still have to check zero every now and again though so I can't be too stingy with them lol
