This is by far the most simple and detailed blender tutorial I’ve ever watched

So I've binge watched this tutorial a first time, then a second time while trying to reproduce it step by step, then a third time and then back and forth in the video to find where was my error, because my result was not good. Few hours later, I realized I'd missed the "be sure to have the Auto Normalize checked". Then some more time to experiment the options of weight paint. At the end, I've learned a lot. Thank you for this awesome tutorial.
I'm almost 6 minutes in and for me it's practically a masterclass in non-destructive block modeling. The topology is so incredibly clean that it's a marvel to look at. Kudos!
- Professional animation quality mouth rig - Easy TO USE (though requires a bit of time to setup) - Simple/minimal character face model I was expecting a flapping lips animation, but was pleasantly surprised when you went all the way. Thanks, great tutorial!
Your videos are what I have been looking for. When I started using blender I was terrified because I couldn’t model characters, navigate, make rigs, etc. I especially was terrified of lip sync but your tutorials are so in-depth and detailed even though the result is simple and stylized. Thank you.
Around 10 and half minutes he says to CTRL + Click to select the bones, then the screen shows SHIFT + Click. Not sure if it's a MAC thing, but on Mac, I had to CTRL + SHIFT + Click for it to work. If you're having trouble, try that. Great walkthrough and a serious help for the rigging and weight painting especially!
holy crap this is the best tutorial on rigging Ive ever seen. and Ive seen a lot. you make it so simple and straight forward. everything is so clear and concise. I think this one video did more to help me in just 30 minutes than the literal hours of content Ive watched from other tutorials did. this is great
Yes, laugh at me, but "just" the beginning with the modeling of the mouth and the why behind it, blew my mind. Saved me so much time and brought some very useful input. Thank you very much, Sir!
you are incredible man! no nonsence talking, very clear and so thorough. I started from scrarch with blender two weeks ago and I'm able to create my own charechters with amazing riggs and it's all thanks to you! thank you so much ❤
listening to an expert mindfully narrate what they're doing can truly be- just as if not more- educational than an over explained beginner tutorial Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
10:50 if anyone is having an issue with selecting the bones with ctrl, make sure Paint Mask is deselected in the top left corner. It's the little gray square with white square. Was selected by default on my computer! :o)
IF anyone is having issues selecting the bones with CTRL, that's because he hit SHIFT instead and mis-spoke lol You can see the button presses he made in the video don't match
If you had to make separate keyframes for the smile and the frown (I had to because a negative smile looked weird on the animal mouth I was making) Then you can simply edit the driver on the smile and change the Expression to Value*-10. That way Z axis movement will still control the smile and frown, but this will allow the smile to occur when going up and the frown should occur when going down. (Going down = moving the lips bone down on the z axis to clarify)
Thank you so much! Most tutorials about rigging that I'm finding rely on the rigify addon, so I'm trying to stitch together a handful of others so that I know what I'm doing
Yooo!! Thank you so much man, this tutorial helped me a LOT, and i mean like a LOT!! If not you, i would be probably stuck here searching the internet for hours for a tutorial on this. So thanks a lot man, i hope to see more helpful tutorials like this one. 👍🍪
I’ve watched tons of Blender tutorials and Yours are are so good and well explained! Really great work! Your character modelling one specifically was so well articulated.
What a wonderful and easy to follow tutorial! My first animation had me really struggling with faces but now I've gone back to starting from scratch, following this taught me so much!!
This tutorial is pure gold! I always struggled with constraints and drivers, but you explain it kristal clear! Thank you so much for making this! I've learned a lot!!!
I spent all day with this tutorial. I really enjoyed it and my result was as satisfying as yours. It took time, I am a beginner. Thanks to you, getting better.
Thanks Joey, I just stumbled on this video after another, inferior tutorial video. It was so engaging I watched it all, even when it wasn't what I was looking for and my sauna turned off while watching. You should be teacher. Or a narrator, you have a good voice. Cheers.
Thanks mate, your method of a mouth rig is really good. I especially like the way you sync both the bone movements and shape keys together. I will try this and let's see if I can come up with something good.
If anyone is still having trouble with the teeth warping and deforming when moving the jaw, also make sure that the teeth mesh isn't being influenced by any other bones than the ones you need (i.e. the jaw bone). I've been struggling with this problem for so long and only now did I notice in Weight Paint mode that the teeth were also influenced by some bones I put in place around the mouth for smiling, sneering, etc. Now the mesh is moving pretty correctly, it only starts deforming if I rotate it at a very big angle but I won't need the model to open its mouth so wide anyway so it's cool
Fantastic and information-rich tutorial! You explain everything thoroughly and it makes sense despite your speed in working through it (now to work through it step by step!). Seriously outstanding presentation, Joey -- many thanks and kudos.
Just subscribed. I was following Dikko's tutorials for modeling and rigging, but my man didn't explain how he got the teeth to move with the armature since I know the teeth are separate objects. Anyway, I'm super grateful for this straight forward tutorial!
MAZING tutorial. I wonder how it would be different for an animal-like mouth rig. Like a kangaroo that has a big mouth projected forward along with its nose but needs to talk. Would it be possible to have the same level of control? An animal-like face rig would be a very appreciative tutorial.
Hey, thank you so much. Followed alone with everything and achieved the righ result... No my question is, how to lip synch with this? cause i see a lot of videos saying that you can lip synch with shape keys, but don't find a video talking about how to do it with the armature... but i head you saying that 'it would be good for lip synching"... Can you pls either make a video or if you already did, can you put the link? Thank you in advance and for all the help.
Hey man as I always say I LOVE your process and this mouth reallyyy helped me understand them in general. But could you possibly do another video about mouth rigs specifically, maybe either a few mouth rigs in different forms and/or tips to do when making a mouth rig? I did your tutorial with the blue guy with the beanie hat and I was curious if I could rig a simple shape key rig and see if I could do it myself and I remembered struggling because you likely didn’t plan that character for a mouth rig. Is it mainly making it deep enough initially so you can fit things like whatever teeth and tongue, and also deep enough to have enough room to weight paint it enough to control and open and close? Also what do you have to think about in terms of topology on the mouth? I know there are plenty of retopo videos about face loops around someone’s mouth for rigging, but since this is simple, I wonder what to keep in mind for the topology of the simple and cartoony mouths? Topology to keep in mind that will deform well with the shape key? I hope you understand what I’m asking but TLDR more specific of what to think about in terms of concepts to make this process easier so we can all apply this to various things, like the skin modifier process you elaborated on further recently. I think a huge problem I had was I didn’t model the inside of the mouth but I’m also just unsure of what to keep in mind for the topology for the sides and around the mouth. Even if you don’t make a video, maybe the answers will help me for now :) Thank you!
Amazing, dude. So really, once created, one can use the mouth rig in different characters over and over! That lip-sync at the end was awesome. Seeing all that pay off was great! Subscribed. So what program or course did you use to learn Blender to get this good? Any recommendations for a beginner, or can I just follow you? I especially need this mouth rig, damn it's good. Really, really good!!! I'm waiting for my mbp 16, and I'm gonna try follow.
Glad you liked it! The blender official RUclips channel has a good beginner playlist for getting started. Other than that I just watched random RUclips videos, read documentation, and experimented.
10:46 when he says "ctrl click" I think it's changed to alt click
Oh dang lol I’m pinned
Just thought I’d say your videos are amazing 👍
Thanks! I pinned this on some other videos but I forgot about this one
for me it is ctrl+shift+click
This is by far the most simple and detailed blender tutorial I’ve ever watched

Loved this tutorial, straight to the point, no annoying bad jokes, no annoying loud songs. Congrats.
No obnoxious graphical transitions...
6:08 if anyone has an issue with beveling the teeth, make sure you apply the scale first with ctrl A
I wish I could like this comment a few more times. Thank you.
- Professional animation quality mouth rig

Great walkthrough and a serious help for the rigging and weight painting especially!
u saved me, thanks >w
for me alt+click works too, hope it helps ya avoid pain on your fingers
this works! thank you so much, i also realized you have to be in bone selection for it to work as well.
holy crap this is the best tutorial on rigging Ive ever seen. and Ive seen a lot. you make it so simple and straight forward. everything is so clear and concise. Holy moly what an excellent and in depth tutorial! This clearly took a lot of work to produce. Cheers mate
Yes, laugh at me, but "just" the beginning with the modeling of the mouth and the why behind it, blew my mind. Saved me so much time and brought some very useful input. Thank you very much, Sir!
This is the only tutorial I’ve found that has clearly explains how to create and rig a mouth without skipping any steps. Amazing work, thanks
This is one of the best Blender tutorials I have watched. I am an instant fan of your channel!
That's what I was searching for, from centuries 😭...finally I got it❤️
You deserve all the happiness in the world man❤️
Right off the bat the construction of the head is incredible. Such an efficient workflow omg

Pure excellence. I can't wait to model along. I feel this will give me both the skill and confidence to set up a good rig. Thank you.
Your tutorial is just top-notch! Can't say how much I love and appreciate it! Thank you !!
Nicely done! Jam packed with a good summery.
love how you also started whistling while showcasing how the character can do it xD
I made my first mouth rig with this tutorial! Super easy to follow and with great results! Thank you!
Yooo!! Thank you so much man, this tutorial helped me a LOT, and i mean like a LOT!!
If not you, i would be probably stuck here searching the internet for hours for a tutorial on this.

I'm learning 3D modelling and rigging, and I have to say: This is an awesome tutorial! Thank you so much!

Thanks Joey, I just stumbled on this video after another, inferior tutorial video. It was so engaging I watched it all, even when it wasn't what I was looking for and my sauna turned off while watching. You should be teacher. Or a narrator, you have a good voice. Cheers.
Even Dikko doesn't bring it to a such understandable level. And I love Dikko and his work!
Now this man, this man here has the goods.
THANKYOUU!!!! Amazing video, helped me a lot!!
I can’t thank you enough, watching you work just levelled me up big time 👍

It's really amazing! I finally figured the shape keys and drivers thing thanks to the tutorial! Thanks!
Amazing tutorial ! I always find the mouth kinda complex but this helps a lot!
Thank u very much, just subbed ☺️ 👍
simple, directo y rico en información. gracias bro, gran tutorial!
Very cool use of drivers and shape keys. I've never consider that as an option until now.
Boi oh boi. Me head hurts. That was full knowledge from the fire hose. Great job my man.
Exactly what I needed.
Demasiado increíble este tutorial. Muchas gracias
Exactly what I needed. Simple, comprehenxive. All around process from scratch even modelling...excellent work. Take my like and sub.

Absolute legend. This is fantastic!

I keep revisiting these tutorials because they are so helpful, thank you!!
Your rigging videos are so helpful in getting me to understand this stuff, thank you for your hard work :)
Just subscribed. I was following Dikko's tutorials for modeling and rigging, but my man didn't explain how he got the teeth to move with the armature since I know the teeth are separate objects. Anyway, I'm super grateful for this straight forward tutorial!
I learned so much just from this video and I didn't even use the rigging method, yet!
Oh. My god.
Thanks to you i'll probably have the best grade i'll ever have for my final project!
this is really amazing.. complex and not too hard to follow.. amazing skills
Thank you for telling me about the normalize tool.
Very well done. Learned some useful tips. Thank you!
I learned so many things for just one video
This tutorial is perfect! you're the best!
He uploads
Occasionally
Well done. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much!
Fantastic tutorial, just what I was looking for for my game character! Thank you!
I find it easier to use shape keys to animate a mouth. Animating like that ain’t too hard for certain mouth shapes depending on the rig.
me llevo 5 días hacer este video xd gracias por el tutorial xd volveré hacerlo para practica graciasssssssssssssssssssssss
Love this video. Learned a lot of new concepts and it was very clear.
The first thing i said to myself is this looks so good then I laughed hysterically
MAZING tutorial.

great tutorial, your explanation of auto normalize was very helpful 👍
Not sure why but I found myself laughing at Alien Bobs jaw movements. This tutorial is perfect.
Cursing myself for not finding you earlier. Subscribed!
Thanks, it took me 5 days to make this video, not every day I'm busy, I had time, I made it go back to replay it xd
That's dedication! Good job!
Tnx Joey, this tutorial is phenomenal!!!,,short and to the point, audio is super clear!!!..
This saved me so much time thank you so much
Clear and concise. Good job

I messed up a bunch of steps and got lost but at least learned the pose mode shortcut "ctrl tab" :D
this is excellent, clear explanation
