I absolutely adore how stoick defers to Valka’s judgement when dealing with bludvist, it’s also pretty historically accurate since Vikings would defer to their wives a lot of the time. It’s unfortunate we’ll never see what their relationship looked like before their separation but I have a feeling that they actually were a loving couple that regarded each other as equals and only really disagreed on how to manage the dragon issue.

OG script had valka as the main antagonist but the writers didnt want to go with that old trope so youre right. originally she DIDNT trust them or want to come back. also part of the reason i love this series is for the stakes, movies for kids dont normally treat their audiences like well humans. Rather than just add adult references they kill people off and have old call backs like the mind control thing being shown in the first movie but explained in the sequel and i wont spoil the third but it's nice to see a series that makes you think and pick out stuff on every rewatch. i recommend the two tv series and the xmas movies. not the 9 realms though

This movie is amazing. I love the parallels with the Bewilder Beasts and Toothless with Stoick, Drago, and Hiccup. I love how much depth this adds to Stoick’s motivations and actions from the first movie. I love the animation, the comedy, the music.
    10/10, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, 👍👍
Edit: Also I just remembered, I love how in the first film the Dragon Queen has the dragons hunting for her on penalty of death, while in this film the Dragon King goes out of his way to feed the Dragons under his protection. It’s an interesting little juxtaposition.

The thing I enjoyed most about the opening scenes of this movie was the casual way in which Hiccup’s and Astrid’s relationship was seen by the village.
Everyone knows they’re engaged, nobody questions it, no one even really makes a massive deal about it. It’s just a fact that shapes them as an important background detail that nevertheless doesn’t take over.
I wish relationships in movies could be depicted as this healthy more often.

21:38 I kinda get what you're saying, but I feel like he's trying to size up the 'great dragon master' Astrid was talking about. But pretty early in the conversation Drago decides Hiccup doesn't live up to Astrid's claims and isn't a threat so why not enjoy his victory a bit and demonstrate his power over this sad excuse for a "dragon master."
For the last movie, definitely wear waterproof makeup.

this is by far one of my all-time favourite movies. i must have watched it over 50 times (i loved it as a young teen and once spent my whole summer holidays watching and rewatching the first two films). and i still cry. i was absolutely sobbing along with you.
if you get the time, i definitely recommend all the tv shows and short films (with the exception of nine realms, which is set in the present-day and absolutely sucks, and the non-canon rescue riders which is written for a much much younger audience). it makes you get super attached to the characters and they go far more in-depth with the side characters. like for example, hookfang (the red monstrous nightmare snotlout rides) is my favourite character in the franchise, but he barely gets any screentime in the films. that scene where drago yells at him makes me so sad - like, this dragon is practically impossible to order around and listens to absolutely nobody (especially snotlout lmfao), but drago scares him and that breaks my heart. anyway point is that the tv shows are worth it!
the only one that actually has any sort of reference in the third film is gift of the nightfury, which is one of the short films. it's not an absolute must-watch, but it does provide some context to one of hiccup's inventions that they don't really explain in the film.

If you truly want the 3rd movie to destroy you I would recommend watching the TV shows before, their animation is a little clunkier (because ofc, it's TV budget vs theater budget) and the writing is simpler most of the time, but it expands nicely the franchise, and it really weights on the relationship between Berk and the dragons
These are 8 seasons full of content, 118 episodes divided in 3 mayor blocks; Dragons: Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge, the first two being Cartoon Network productions basically being the first and second seasons of 20 episodes each, and the third being Netflix developed with 6 more seasons of 13 episodes each
Although these are completely optional, DreamWorks: Dragons ends up being pretty inconsecuential to the movies slash the bond that the viewer ends up forming with the characters outside of Hiccup and Toothless

  • @samuelvincent557
    @samuelvincent557 2 года назад +6

I love this movie, as heart wrenching as it is. But I particularly, love the subtext about Drago. He uses fear to control the dragons and people, because he is still afraid of dragons, and the fire. He can't use kindness to work with them, because he still sees them as marauding beasts. You can see the fear when the dragons are firing, as a group, at him and the Alpha, and when Hiccup throws his flaming sword by his hand and he screams. He is still ruled by his fear of the dragons.
The loss of Stoick was so heartbreaking, not just because he died, but it was because his death was meaningful. It wasn't because he lost to Drago, he sacrificed himself, without hesitation, to save his son. The noblest of deaths and worth of his place in Valhalla.

16:09 Somewhere along the line, they confirmed Gobber is gay. when you look him up in the "trivia" section in the howtotrainyourdragon wiki fandom page:
"Dean DeBlois revealed that the reason Gobber never got married is that he is homosexual. This makes him the first gay character of the franchise, and one of very few within the DreamWorks corpus"❤🤟

One thing I was a little sad about was that there was an alternate story for 3, which would have been that Drago survived his encounter with Hiccup and gets stranded on an island with a wounded dragon. The pair eventually bond and Drago gets a chance for redemption. It was considered to take too much time though, so was passed on, but I sorta wish they had explroed it.

You’re making me cry harder then I ever have watching HTTYD 😭 it’s really a pity you didn’t watch it as it releases, cause the way it’s written and released, we actually grew up alongside Hiccup! Most that are attached to HTTYD actually started off as a kid like Hiccup watching the 1st one, were a teen just like Hiccup in the 2nd and are now adults like Hiccup in the 3rd. No other “coming of age” movies does it like HTTYD where the in-movie timeline actually matches the real world timeline!

@16:10 The 'other' reason he is referring to is because the character is gay. You should watch the series Dragons: Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge, they dive deeper into what happened on that 5 year gap between the first film and this. They expand on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, Hiccup and his dad, as well as flesh out the rest of the gang, and how Berk adapted to living with dragons. You should also watch the Gift of the Night Fury holiday special because the events of that are referenced in the next film.

This trilogy has always been my #1 comfort series bc of the amount of disability representation. I was born with Spina Bifida, which limits my mobility in some areas (I use orthotics and crutches for long distances.) But I try to never let it hinder me too much & I do have to credit that to having characters like Hiccup to look up to as a kid. I've always related to having more of that analytical thinking that he has and it's very easy for me to put myself in his shoes. And I do have my moments of frustration obviously, but I find some comfort in the fact that everyone has hurdles, regardless of being disabled or anything like that, so you have to look at it as just something to work through instead of singling yourself out
I also love the subtleties of queer representation in Gobber. It's hinted at & kinda joked about during the part where he's like "this is why I never married. Well, that and the other reason." It doesn't go ignored but it also isn't his entire personality, which I really enjoy. But aside from more traditional marriage values in their times, I do also believe Stoick wouldn't have cared who he married and would've helped normalize it had it been an issue

A lot of people don't like this movie. But in my opinion this is the best. Of course, nostalgia plays a big role. This is the first How To Train Your Dragon movie I saw in the cinema as a kid. And that plot with the surprises... This movie left good scars, I was so small when I saw it and the movie got so serious. I'm dying of nostalgia when I hear the opening music.
As a family, we also watched the super great series *Rider von Berg*. Which takes place between the first and second films. Of course, my father didn't like many children's series because most of them are just damn stupid. But he later told me that he really liked this franchise. Because it's just not that stupid little kid stuff. This was a franchise of pure emotion, mystery and fun. Riders of Berg in particular was really great, adding hundreds of dragons and stories and great villains to the franchise.
