I'll always admire this movie because at his age Keanu still does most/all his own stunts. It's realistic in that he has to reload and doesn't have endless bullets. And that most of the time John doesn't waste time with fights or slow deaths. He goes straight for the head and is very accurate
There is a fantastic video that goes over *how* they introduce John, it's called "John Wick: Writing a Terrifying Protagonist." and I'm not gonna spoil it here because that man deserves the views, and it does a great job going over something they do setting up who John is, specifically from the perspective of the Antagonists.
I love the subtle world building the movie does. Good example is the scene where the cop shows up at johns house. That convo subtly tells you that the cops or at least that cop knows what John did or does for a living and there is some sort of code going on where cops don’t interfere with assassins as long as the assassins don’t directly involve the cops. Sorta “you stay out of my world and I will stay out of yours” respect. That along with all the services allowed members of the continental with those gold coins, like a whole economy from mechanics, doctors, cleaners, hotels, armorers, tailors etc etc etc. It all creates a rich world I wanna see more of.
Yes the Director was kinda of a stunt guy; he was the stunt coordinator in the Matrix. You do know that Keanu Reeves does all this own stunts right?! He did train to be a fast reloader, that is him doing the mag reloads (and take it from someone that was us in the military, that reload is pretty good); he has also been training in a couple of martial arts', so those fight scenes are just one continuous take. That is the reason why Keanu Reeves does his own stunts, he has stated that he likes for his fans to real see and believe he is the one in the shot; but obviously for the real dangerous ones, then he does have a stunt, but for the most part it is all him.
Thank you so much for all that knowledge! Since filming this reaction which now was months ago, I’ve come to learn more about Chad Stahelski. Who is a legend! Thanks for sharing!
Also the stunt co-ordinator of The Matrix, and Keanu Reeves promised to support and play a role in his endeavor if he made a movie which John Wick is. :)
Keanu himself says he does not do stunts. He does all the action, but leaves the actual stunts to the stunt team. For example it is a stunt guy who gets sideswiped by the car, or gets thrown off the balcony.
keanu reeves is like........the anti-steven seagal: highly respected, great at his craft, ages like fine wine, been in tons of great movies, and just a really nice, humble, intelligent human being whom everyone enjoys having around.
@@narsilthefreak6171 well seagal was never very far up, or mighty... his career sums up to that old joke: he started average and after that really started toget weak.... (sorry don´t know the correct wording in english, as i am german)
21:13 The thing about lighting in John Wick movies is, you'll see whenever John is in a power position, the light of the particular shot will always be accustomed to red, as it symbolises blood and his lore of babayaga. Where as, whenever the red light goes and some other color comes into the frame, you'll see John getting handled or being beaten up by someone. Chad did a wonderful job with strobes of lights in keanu action scenes.
I like the opening shots in his house, all gray and colorless, symbolizing his emotional state at the time, as well as the "gray area" in which he worked as an assassin.
A great example of film making done right is the little scene between Jimmy the cop and John. On its face, a great tension break, cleverly written comedy. But from a film making perspective, an incredible example of exposition done so subtly and so well. The viewer knows Jimmy, and by extension, the other cops in the area know who John Wick is. They know he retired and it even lets the viewer imagine a conversation between John and someone from local PD about it. Maybe over a quiet cup of coffee and just John assuring them he wasn't bringing any danger to the community and just wanting a quiet life. ALL of that, from that simple exchange.
The subtle exposition in this scene also informs the viewer that the cops are willing to stay out of John's high-stakes world. "Just taking care of some issues." "Oh, alright then." Its clear that the cop sees the blood on John, it is also clear that Jimmy likely has a view of a body -- and the cop is basically saying "as long as you have things under control, we'll stay out of it."
The directors have said in interviews that as long as the mob guys only deal with their own people, the cops don’t interfere. John isn’t attacking civilians or “innocents” and so the cops leave him alone.
Another thing that I liked about Keanu Reeves in these _John Wick_ films is that, from what I remember, he seemed to be good at keeping his eyes open whilst firing a gun. Whilst blinking under such conditions is an understandable and natural reaction to the loud bang of the firearm, it can be quite distracting for the audience if an actor/actress is blinking every time the gun goes off, especially if someone is firing a handgun several times in quick succession and s/he is blinking like mad. I remember when watching an audio commentary for the Hong Kong Legends DVD release of the Hong Kong film _Full Contact;_ in that commentary Bey Logan (who did most of those commentaries at the time) was teamed up with Gary Daniels, and there was a scene in which Bey commented on a scene in which Chow Yun-Fat was good at not blinking every time he fired a gun, and Gary said in response that he himself had been told during pre-filming training: “When you fire a gun, try not to blink.”
Anyone who has taken even the most basic of stage combat classes loves this movie. The choreography was absolute poetry, and the work the Keanu put into training for the role makes me tired just thinking about it.
You Tube was suggesting videos of yours pretty aggressively to me lately. I did not want to check out your channel, but I was comparing what people edit out and what they show when reacting to John Wick so I decided to watch yours too. I love your voice, I love your cadence and I love that your commentary goes beyond the immediate emotional payoff most other reactors go with. A very pleasant surprise. Subscribed.
Thank you so very much. I absolutely love your breakdowns and commentary which are completely different, educational, and engaging compared to most other reaction channels. Please keep doing this.
i love how they kept count of how many shots were fired from each gun and reloaded when the clips ran out, also the checking for gun jams too with the guns know to jam easily, all the little details most people wouldn't know to look out for makes it even better
This was an amazing action film. I love this theme/ plot of a character who suffers trauma and hunts down the people responsible (i.e. Peppermint, American Assassin, The Foreigner, Sweet Girl, Jolt, etc).
Jimmy taking his hat off in the mourning position when he notices the body and asks john if he's working is one of the best parts in my opinion Its like like Jimmy's way of saying "Poor bastards."
By far the best reaction to one of my favorite movies ever. John Wick is one of my favorite characters of all time and Keanu Reeves is one of my favorite actors. The dude just doesn't age. I subscribed to your channel so I can't wait to see more.
I have to say, I loved watching your reaction to this movie. I had a constant smile on my face. As others have said you really need to watch the other two. The fourth should be coming out soon as well. Once you finish these I would recommend the movie Nobody.
John Wick 2 and 3 just get more gorgeous and the action sequences more jaw dropping with each film. The only films with more impressive hand to hand scenes are The Raid, The Raid 2, and the shower scene in Eastern Promises.
Just going with John Wick 2 - yeah, the action scenes were at least as impressive, and there was more action. But that's exactly my problem with the movie and why I probably won't even watch the third: They went with the all too common recipe of "take the action and effects up a notch or five" - at the cost of the story and characters. _This_ is what's wrong with modern Hollywood movies and why they require more and more that you leave your brain at the entrance. Seriously, this is no better than some porn movie going, "Plumber comes to fix the pipes, housewife shows up half naked and they fuck. Then the pool boy comes to clean the pool, housewife goes sunbathing in skimpy outfit, they fuck. Then the neighbor comes by to ask for some sugar, housewife..." If you want to end up with 95% action scenes held together by some really flimsy story that doesn't even have enough content to not make sense, then keep praising the direction these movies are going. I won't. I like my brain.
Still have to see Eastern Promises. But both of the 'Raid' movies are really gorgeous. One can only admire the ingenuity of the crew to create effects that would have been, undoubtedly, easier to animate than to really shoot it.
OMG, I love your reactions :)) And the clip it si well edited, good job! I saw other reactions to this film, but those who watched it seemed like they didn't understand what was happening in the film, they were completely outside the film, they didn't intuit anything :))
what makes it such a good movie aside from all the amazing directing and choreography. is the fact EVERYONE knows John and knows that hes not really a bad person but you also dont wanna f with him. Also if you kill a dog like that you deserve death, only a uncompassionate psycho killer would do some thing like that
Everyone focuses so much on the great action, but it wouldnt be anything without the next level Cinematography, and lighting too. Everything just looked so beautiful. You are the first reactor ive seen pick up on that. I loved your insights. I am going to check out the other 2 videos you made on Wick right now!!! I CAN NOT wait for number 4!!! I just hope they keep it a BIIITTT more grounded still, as theyve gone on they have gotten crazier and crazier, they really have to avoid the curse of franchises like Fast and Furious.
This is a masterclass in managing a character's first impression on an audience. The first time we see John Wick, he looks like he's been through the ringer. Then we find out that he loved a woman who died, but she got him a puppy so he wouldn't be alone after she passed, proving he was deeply loved in return. Then we get the scene where John is attacked and the puppy, the final gift from his late wife, is killed for no other reason than it was making noise. That's the initial picture we have of John Wick: a man who's lost not just the love of his life, but her final gift to him as well. Only once that is firmly established is it revealed exactly who John Wick was before all this: a relentless, cold-hearted murderer, feared and respected across the underworld and beyond. A man who single-handedly helped set up a major criminal organization in a one night murder spree. A monster in black, Death's own emissary. A man who, were this any other movie, would be the big villain. But by this point we don't care, because the first impression we have of John Wick is that of a loving husband struggling to move past his wife's death. By this point, we just want John to let loose, and hunt down the fuckers who took his wife's final gift from him.
The John Wick house is located out here on Long Island in a very exclusive town called Mill Neck. -- The runway where John practices is Republic Airport, Farmingdale, NY,.
Subbed. Every reaction misses the "Stole that from me, Killed that from me" scene when Wick was tied to the chair regarding his dog, which IMO is the most powerful moment of the film in terms of raw emotion.
Yea it was one of the very few scenes where he actually shows emotion instead of that stone faced stare he has for most of the movie. The subtle nuances in this film are what really make it shine
I've read when filming wrapped on the last John Wick movies He gifted the entire stunt crew with personalized Rolexes. Thanking them for their hard work. Amazing individual.
He did most of the stunts and went through a 3-gun, {pistol, shotgun, rifle}, professional shooting course. A small but important detail that most people miss. His wife was brain dead? and on a respirator. He kissed her on the forehead and nodded at the doctor to shut it off. She literally died while he was holding her.
New to your channel, I believe I've just found the smartest reactor! Appreciate both your wit and respect for the movie work 👍🏼 Oh, great editing too 👏🏼
In the grand scheme of inciting events, I doubt anything is ever gonna top this one :) Also, we now know what really happens when stunt performers are finally allowed to run with it :) Also also, rocking that faded purple hair :)
The beauty behind John Wick is that it's a film series based around the 5 stages of grief. Each stage is represented through each film. The first stage, denial, shows him struggle with losing his wife. John’s living by himself with his wife’s things left around the house and in the bathroom, untouched as if she’ll come back to use them - trying to live normally and act like nothings wrong. But we see him in anguish driving recklessly in his car. This is of course also why Keanu Reeves works so well in this film, as he has had to cope with grief in the loss of his girlfriend and their daughter. It's really a beauty and you get to see his character really evolve over the course of the next two films as he moves through anger and bargaining. You should definitely check them out.
John Wick just shows you regardless that is an action movie what good writing and storytelling and cinematography can make a film good or amazing. 1) You touched on Keanu..yes he is such a good and kind man and a great actor. The film sets it up so well that you feel for John so much he lost his wife, and then these horrible people come in and do heinous things to him and his dog. So immediately the audience is now emotionally invested. But then the curve ball you know nothing of John, but you get to hear a mob boss tell his story so impactfully that the audience is like omg they woke a sleeping giant. Then you get to see just tid bits and just one scene of his skill..so immediately not only do you have that this man was respected but he is respectful and a very very skilled assassin. I give props to the writers, film crew, and everyone involved in this movie....THIS was great storytelling. I loved your reaction because this is how you get people into a story...it pulls you in no matter what kind of person you are.

the john wick series is my fav movies of the decade, the lore and the myhtos and the whole world that john wick is built around has so much possibility for other stories to be told about other assassins like john or whatever.
To your question, Keanu does ALL of his stunts, with the exception of several "long-fall" scenes. He studied 3-gun under Taran Butler, and returned to that program with Halle Berry for John Wick 3. He studied advanced tactics under Shawn Ryan. His film tactics are spot-on combat technique, and the later sequel, with Halle, was friendly competition in the pits, as Halle often beat his time through the course. Both are natural shooters. Watch the two and three shell shotgun reloads, and the pistol reloads and chamber verification if you have any doubt.
the best ever Reaction to this video I have seen out of dozens... really honest and truthful reaction and very well expressed... The Hollywood rule about killing the dog that you mentioned... it was born from this movie and part 3... dogs like ol Yeller got whacked all the time, but never again while John Wick lives... and beyond - that doggy acted dead for the sake of all doggies yet to come...

One thing I just noticed was that when Jimmy looked in the house and saw the body, the first thing he did was take off his hat. He essentially signaled, "I came here officially, I see nothing within my jurisdiction, this is way over my head" and went into familial mode. It's subtle, but it's a lovely touch Edit: I'm sure I'm not the first to point that out, but I'd never noticed. There are a lot of subtleties, many miss the reservation for 12, the conversion of the bouncers weight concerning the number of hostiles etc. It's got so many layers and is incredible
Fun fact, John Wick never shot more bullets than his actual number of ammo, like he counts them every time, unlike in some funky action films where they shoot a 30bullets weapon for 2 minutes straight without reloading :)
"The man who was in Barry" is Daniel Bernhardt. Amazing Belgian martial artist and a really nice guy. Like most of the people involved with this movie, he was in some of the Matrix films. He played one of the upgraded Agents.
i've watched this movie over a dozen times, still have to stop the first part. Also about Daisy, Stahelski fully admitted that he's only allowed one scene like that in his career lol.

It all creates a rich world I wanna see more of.
hopefully we get to see more in the prequel thats supposed to happen
@@jaapsch2 Yeah- Keanu's probably too old to do some shit like fall off the balcony for a stunt anymore anyways lol.
Do you know that the Mafia boss is a swedish actor who died some years ago ?
The dying beagle dragged itself to John’s side to die. Many people miss that detail!
keanu reeves is like........the anti-steven seagal: highly respected, great at his craft, ages like fine wine, been in tons of great movies, and just a really nice, humble, intelligent human being whom everyone enjoys having around.
Steven Seagal's that bad?
If he is the anti-Keanu Reeves... Damn.
@@narsilthefreak6171 Steven Seagal just sits in the chair in "his" films
@@iAmPimmiCue Damn. How the mighty have fallen, indeed.

Other way around. Blue is John's color in this movie, red is not.
Yours Clariss is the best reaction ever! Loved it!
7:02 that "Oh" tells you so much about John Wick in just that one word. Amazing delivery too.
@@1bendykat Never knew they confirmed it, but how great to be able to convey that much with that simple 2 minute scene? lol
I love how the dad told him he's a dead man walking and acted tough, but then got his book, called John and begged him to spare his son.
that movie is a freaking masterpiece. I've watched it a hundred times and will watch it a hundred times over.
One thing I love about the series is how it feels like they’re video games
My favorite thing about this franchise is it somehow continues to top itself. Even when you think it can't get more over the top it does somehow.
I love your emphasis on filmmaking tequnique. It's not something I've seen from other reactors.
I love to learn and this was new to me. Thank you.
“How goods your laundry?”
“Im sorry sir, but nobody is that good.”
Remains my favourite exchange in that whole movie
The actor who had to "kill" Daisy felt so guilty about it that every time the director said "Cut!" he would cuddle the dog.
@@Wolf-ln1ml Your loss.
@@Wolf-ln1ml Losing out some some great films! It continues on with more people trying to kill him. Amazing to watch.
OMG, I love your reactions :))
And the clip it si well edited, good job!
The dog was scheduled to be put down I believe...he saved his life. Awesome movie!
I believe that that is the best single word description of what a badass John is. "Oh."
And there are 2 MORE movies!!!
Plus 4 and 5 were confirmed along with an origin show called The Continental
I like how you explain into details the scenes. good job. Subscribed
He says so little and yet it says so much.
The Best Description For John Wick's Character.
So happy you called out Ian McShane! He masterfully plays Al Swearengen in Deadwood, one of my fave TV series, where my username is from!
That "Oh" was beautiful. The delay, the weight, the amount of "Holy shit the world is going to crumble." in one word. It was amazing.
New to your channel, I believe I've just found the smartest reactor! Appreciate both your wit and respect for the movie work 👍🏼 Oh, great editing too 👏🏼
In the grand scheme of inciting events, I doubt anything is ever gonna top this one :)
Also, we now know what really happens when stunt performers are finally allowed to run with it :)
Also also, rocking that faded purple hair :)
You have to watch 2 and 3 they are SUPER GOOOD
This came up on my recommendation and I’m glad I did! Subbed!
7:02 so happy to see that girls can actually laugh this whole heartedly ❤️❤️
The best part of the storytelling isn't the threats or violence but the number of characters who just say "Nope, I'm not fighting John Wick today".
It's so much fun seeing you be excited about movies! 🥰
Many RUclipsrs gave reaction on this masterpiece but your reaction was priceless 😍❤️🔥
He not only does his stunts, but he also does the shooting scenes, he trains a lot and there are even videos of it.
He does the combat scenes. Things like getting thrown off the balcony or getting hit by the SUV are a stuntman.
Your kitty is so adorable 😻 And great reaction, the combination of your professional opinions mixed in with your attitude and kitty cameos just got you a new subscriber!
the john wick series is my fav movies of the decade, the lore and the myhtos and the whole world that john wick is built around has so much possibility for other stories to be told about other assassins like john or whatever.
Love the choreography in this film. The whole thing has a great flow to it.
8:12 - there’s an interview on a chat show featuring Sandra Bullock, talking about when she met him while filming Speed. Worth a watch.
Ps love your cat 😸😸😸😺😺 cats rule the universe that's bottom line 😂😅😅I waved at him I don't think he saw me waving 😂😂😂
the best ever Reaction to this video I have seen out of dozens... really honest and truthful reaction and very well expressed... The Hollywood rule about killing the dog that you mentioned... it was born from this movie and part 3... dogs like ol Yeller got whacked all the time, but never again while John Wick lives... and beyond - that doggy acted dead for the sake of all doggies yet to come...
The wine she made before he got hit with the bat is perfect timing
Charlie was the lead villain of "the warriors". "Warriors, come out and playeee!"
And before i forget, heres a big shout out to lance reddick. He was a phenomenal talent and an exceptional human being in his own right. Im waiting to see pt 4 because i dont wanna rush into seeing one of his last films
Very nice reaction! I really enjoyed watching this. :)
I'll be checking your other reactions for sure!
Jimmy the cop has one of the most meaning-filled brief scenes in modern cinema, a true "there are no small roles" example.
The puppies' sacrifice allowed the audience to be completely acceptable to any method of brutality John Wick would enact in the course of his revenge.
Keanu does almost ALL of the stunts and gunwork in these movies, he trains really hard with gun experts and he’s gotten very good at fighting
7:00 ... one of the greatest single word line deliveries in cinema history. "Oh."
Awesome insight to a film I have enjoyed many times, but you have really broadened my appreciation by bringing to light even more of the mechanics behind the pure art of the presentation. Thank you so much! I liked and subed. 😀😃😄
The man who was in Barry, is Daniel Bernhardt. A Swiss, martial artist, model, actor, and stuntman. He's also worked with Keanu before. He was the "Upgrade" Agent from The Matrix Reloaded.
I haven't got to THAT scene, and I already know how hard Clariss is going to take it!
12:44... Wow! I didn't notice that until the club scenes, but u caught that, and no one else (I've seen MANY reactions to the entire series, except 4...) caught that, or at least commented on it, good catch.
\O>
The movie builds the good guy up as if he's the villain and the mafia are the good guys who prepare themselves for him. hahaha. so unique.
I always enjoy your evaluations of films but this may be another favorite review simply because of the KITTY!!!
Your reviews are very refreshing to watch! Dont change!!

The scene with the dog literally gets everyone
Tuned in for the reaction but subbed for the co-host at 24:33. ;-) Cheers from Florida.
The gas station at the beginning of the movie where he first bumps into those Hired Goons© was filmed in my town! I pass it on the way to work! :D
Also if you pause when he's getting the dog at the end, the paperwork says it's scheduled to be put to sleep. So John saved the dog at the end
I love what you're doing. I'm learning so much.
Greetings from Australia the land down under beautiful lady :) YOu have earned a new subscriber for the awesome reaction and can't wait to see the reaction to the next 2 in particularly number 3 lol.. It's off the charts insane far more brutal also.. And of course body count is higher in 3 than 1&2 combined HAHAHA..
And edit time.. was so waiting to see your reaction at 21.30 with the knife thru the chin/jaw area.. Brutal and the stare down was intense and then 24.11 church scene unloads inside a church lol.. no shits given
One thing I just noticed was that when Jimmy looked in the house and saw the body, the first thing he did was take off his hat.
First time watching a video on your channel and I like it 🙂immediately subscribed 💪
Fun fact, John Wick never shot more bullets than his actual number of ammo, like he counts them every time, unlike in some funky action films where they shoot a 30bullets weapon for 2 minutes straight without reloading :)
Now I want to watch John Wick again!
And yeah, watch the sequels.🐈⬛
"The man who was in Barry" is Daniel Bernhardt. Amazing Belgian martial artist and a really nice guy. Like most of the people involved with this movie, he was in some of the Matrix films. He played one of the upgraded Agents.
i've watched this movie over a dozen times, still have to stop the first part.
Also about Daisy, Stahelski fully admitted that he's only allowed one scene like that in his career lol.
It’s a scene that might even make a Jainism adherent put aside their principles.
