I lived in SF in the 80’s. I was there during the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. They close it for pedestrians. The response was so overwhelming that the Bridge flattened out. They had to close it to check for structural damage. The fireworks, tho, were mind boggling.

Hello Chris, I enjoy your videos and you come across as a very nice person. One thing I have to say is that whenever you speak about San Francisco you mostly talk about places in the downtown area. I am a German tour guide in the city and the next time you come I would really love to show what amazing things and neighborhoods you can find in other areas of the city. I live here for 6 years now and to this day it's pure magic, despite some crazy problems that the city has. Tell me when you're here and we'll have a beer and I show you what the real heart of the city is.

San Francisco Chinatown is a "working" chinatown too, it's not just tourist shops. Walk two blocks over to Stockton street, instead of staying on touristy Grant avenue, and you'll quickly see that. It's actually one of the poorest neighborhoods in SF/the bay area. Very working class, full of cheap tiny apartments in century old buildings (plus a bunch of tourist stuff, mostly on Grant ave), and is over 90% Chinese (If anyone is curious about that, not all housing in SF is prohibitively expensive. There's rent control, public housing, SROs, etc). And yeah, Oakland Chinatown is a "working" Chinatown as well, without the tourist stuff.

so refreshing to hear someone say positive things about oakland and sanfrancisco i love it here homelessness gets a bad rap if the rest of the country were as accomadating to the poor as the bay area which is why soo many homeless come to the bay ... they do not want to live in shelters. its also one of the only ities in this country where you can get a decent wage to live and a uninon job with universal healthcare. If lhomelessness is the only thing people complain about its the least of my worries . I am a sucess story... I started homless.

Grant Avenue is the tourist street in the original Chinatown. Stockton Street, one block to the west of Grant, is the working Chinatown. However, San Francisco has four Chinatowns. The second is Clement Street in the Richmond District. Third is Irving Street in the Middle Sunset District. And fourth is Noriega Street in the Outer Sunset District.

Last summer for our family vacation we flew into Vegas, spent a couple days there, and then drove to SF and spent the rest of the week there. The kids (16 & 17) had never been out west, so it was a great experience for the whole family. The thing I love about the SF and the Bay area is it's one of those places you can't see in just a day or even a week. I can't wait to get back because I know there is so much there we didn't see or do.

For anyone who actually wants to see Oakland for what it is...I recommend you guys start it off on a Friday morning. First go ahead and grab a bowl of delicious noodle soup (#21) from Vien Huong which is located at the 10:45 mark between the store behind him and the painted red board. With your belly satisfied, walk across the street in the same direction as Chris over to the bakery. Grab an egg tart and a bun or two, you can munch on these as desert or save them for a bit later. As for the egg tart, consume it as soon as you get them as they are most yummy when fresh. Take a stroll from here to either Jack London or "up town" as the transplant calls them but do this after you taken the short walk around Chinatown. Depending on the days that you do come here, make sure to google up what's happening at the Oakland Museum. An amazing staple of Oakland and not to be miss! To further make it even more memorable, time your arrival a day or two before a baseball game. During the evening, take a side excursion down to the Fruitvale district to explore the food truck scene. No, not some generic food truck but the original trucks that make up Oakland's festive area. Yes, a sure sign is a crowded food truck and parking sometime sucks but its worth it. I recommend "El Gordo Tacos" or "Guadalajara" and the taco of choice is "al pastor" at El Gordo and "carnitas" at Guadalajara. Don't worry, these two are but a block from each other. If you arrive around 6ish, you can find the delicious churro cart parked just a block down from Guadalajara at the Gardenas market parking lot. To start off your weekend right, you can sleep in a bit and start your adventure around 9-10am. Head over to my favorite starting point and find parking over by 50th ave and E 10 street. There should be a lady who has a tent setup there that sells fruit juice and other knick knacks. We can will come back to her later...from here, walk across the street pass the train track along 50th ave towards the other food vendors. Yes, there are various mom and pops food stall here ranging from El Salvadorian to Mexican food. Try your chance at a fresh hand made batch of pupusas then make way for a bowl of menudo or pozole. If menudo or pozole is off putting to you, you can walk further down the streets to explore the other food vendor for fresh chicharron and aquachiles. At some point you will find another intersection which is Coliseum way. Yes, this is why I recommended you park back there because parking up here is a hassle. To your left is the Coliseum flea market and worth a walk around as you get to see a lot of the local Hispanic community doing what they do best here. After exploring the area and stuffing yourself out, go ahead and head back to where you parked. Walk over to the lady and tell them you want one of their passion fruit juice to go. Yes, I recommend picking an extra one up because they are darn delicious. This little tour shouldn't take more than 3 hour for your weekend morning giving you plenty of time to explore San Francisco water front. If not, you can spend your days doing a quick visit over towards the redwood or even a drop in by Muir woods for the giant redwoods and come back in the evening to have a dinner at Jack London's waterfront district at the Farm House Thai kitchen. Yes, do pick up a beer after wards at Heinold's last stand which is a 1 min walk. The rest of the night can be spend exploring the downtown "uptown" district of Oakland night scene. If you have any question...you can always comment here and if I am free that night, I would be happy to give anyone a walking taco tour. Avoid the tourist scene for the most part and explore the places that really put Oakland on the map.

Good video, but what you did you could have done basically without a car. Just figure out BART, MUNI and the bus, and you avoid the expense of trying to park there. I wouldn't think of walking from Fisherman's Wharf over that hill into the Marina District (and beyond). It's a longer, and hillier walk, than a map might lead you to believe. If my memory is correct, the bus goes all the way from that Marriott in Fisherman's Wharf, to the Palace of Fine Arts. Just be careful to go the right direction, but no biggie. Get off the bus and take one the opposite way if you find yourself heading to Downtown.

The beautiful weather (especially compared to SF), neighborhoods like Lakeshore Avenue, Rockridge, and Montclair, and the open spaces (Lake Merritt, Oakland Hills), and the culture (Grand Lake Theater, beautiful restored Paramount Theater, Jack London Square) but it's really gone down hill since the turn of the millennium.

Actually San Francisco’s Chinatown is over 100 years old and it has a very dark history including an city ordered quarantine for all residents of Chinatown and San Francisco in the early 20th century who were either Chinese American or Japanese American due to the Bubonic plague which was ruled illegal by the US courts. Chinese American’s or Japanese Americans had to have a health certificate to leave the city. The living conditions in Chinatown in San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century were deplorable for many reasons.

@@YellowProductions Well sure it's got more tourists, it invented "Chinatown" watching again you clearly make it out to be more touristy than anything, it's absolutely not that, it's a far richer neighborhood than that, homes, factories, schools etc...Oakland's has less tourists, cuz it's lame as heck...it's just a mall, and a small one at that.

And the pier/wharf bridges. and embarcadero is the only thing to see. Very underwhelming compared to other tourist destinations. My money feels better spent in nyc and vegas
