As a black man from Brazil this video is really interesting. Being a country that is also a part of the afican diaspora, the sounds of "proto-rap" can be found all over brazilian music. The battling, the rhythmic rich improvised music, sincopation etc...

I’m 3 weeks into a hip-hop class I’m taking at my university and this 10 minute vid was a pretty damn good summary of everything we’ve gone over in the first 6 hours worth of lectures!! U covered the early DJs, Jamaica, the Jubalaires, the Dozens, the West African roots, and even Mike Tyson lol!!! Great video as always Jeff🙏

I’d like to add though that much of rap‘s roots can also be found in ragtime music of the early 1900s, as well as the Signifying Monkey which was folklore connected to the African and slave culture that you mentioned in the video that was a super important part in the pre-history of rap for several decades

Excellent presentation! As someone ardent about this, I respect your passion. How about a precursor of rap, "flyting". Or "Stranded in the Jungle", by doo wop group the Cadets. Or Douglas "Jocko" Henderson?

The picture used next to the name of Tanya "Sweet Tee" Winley is actually the poet/author Nikki Giovanni.

See if you can find anything on Pigmeat Markham (sp?) and there are some female blues singers that rapped too. This is a great chronicling of the first recorded hip hop but “rapping” is much older.

Arthur Lee was the first rapper. Look up the song “Bummer in the Summer” by Love, released in November of 1967. The tenth track on what many consider to be the greatest album of all time, this is the first example of clear cut rapping.

Dude u want to know the root of RAP come to Africa and I will show u not one but multiple cultures that rap along with drums beats n flute. And there is one that is only said to address worthy people or leaders of certain communities or family. And most especially to show one courage, power and more.
