Never mind the armchair build critics… you did a good job. Having worked on motorcycles for many years, as well as building a fuel tank out of steel I can appreciate the time and trials and tribulations that go into it. One thing though- board track racers ain’t got no stinkin headlights! Again nice work… Have a great one!
It looks really nice. Great job on the fiberglass, something I've never been any good at. But you left the worst part of the Chinese engine kit on the bike. That chain stay mounted tensioner. I have built a couple of those Chinese motorized bicycles, and the first one almost killed me. That screen door roller on the tensioner broke, the chain and metal part of the tensioner got pulled into the rear wheel, breaking several spokes and locking up the rear wheel. I went down hard. I was riding in a bike lane, and fortunately I fell toward the sidewalk instead of into traffic. On the next one I cut the chain to fit and left off the tensioner.
Thanks for the comment! It's been a while but I think I ended up using some metal roller bearings and washers for the tensioner wheel and tossed the one that came in the kit. I was going to use one of those engine case mounted spring loaded tensioners but, if I remember right, I was having clearance problems with the wide tires so I needed to have the tensioner back further and shim out the rear sprocket to make it all work. Thanks again for watching!
I had the same idea of using floral foam and fiberglass to build my tank as well as it is how we used to build all sorts of stuff back in the day. Not sure why you would want to go through the trouble of building a steel tank to go inside that will just rust and likely leak anyways. Many modern motorcycles have fiberglass tanks and they work just fine..
Thanks for the info Sean! I was thinking the fiberglass tank may break if I ever got in a wreck so I went with the metal. You are right though, It did start leaking :) I ended up having to use a tank liner to seal it up. Thanks again for watching!
Little 'trick' about foam and fiberglass: If you are using styrofoam you can dissolve the foam with aceton after you have finished the outer layer with fiberglass.
