Did you know that the F-5 Tiger II can fit 3 men in it? And take off and fly with 3 men in the cockpit? Chau Trinh, the SouthVietnamese f-5 pilot said an F-5 with 3 men in it landed at Utapao just after him. (In late april of 75). Himself having flown there with just one passengerin his F-5.
I find the majority of fighter jets beautiful, but the Tiger capture the look of it's era well. It's like a F1 racing car of the Air with those sleek 'coke bottle' curves. Great piece as always Magnar, please consider doing a piece on the F-87 Sabre and it's use in the Korean war in MiG Alley against it's nemesis the Mig-15 as this is a short lived transitional moment in fighter jet history that often doesn't get the exposure it fully deserves. Thanks again. Best Wishes.
@@FlywithMagnar I wasn't aware of that fact. I've read that he had a part in the design of the Mustang prior to the Sabre, but never really heard much spoken about him as a designer of aircraft as you hear of other designers legacies.
You asked about tip for next video and then I have an request anout cost for aquiring and operating this type of jet fighters from same time periode. Comparing the immense cost for the F-14 Tomcat to the nimble smaller alternatives explains a bit the export success to smaller contries
Great video about a favorite aircraft of mine. I always regret that politics kept the F-5's offspring, the F-20 Tigershark, from reaching production. "The Greatest that never was" also received accolades from Chuck Yeager and many others. It had a single engine that produced 160% of the thrust of the F-5E's hard-working but too-small J-85s. It required hardly any maintenance compared to the F-16, was far more likely to be mission-ready, and could fire the AIM-7 Sparrow missile seven years before the F-16. It also had revolutionary avionics, something looking at the F-5E panel brought home. The F-5 was a Kelly Johnson design. He was a true genius of aircraft design. I enjoyed hearing the F-14 driver's reaction to dogfighting the Shark. With the avionics and engine upgrades, the F-20 would have been downright scary. At least the indirect descendants of the F-5E had success. The F-18 Hornet and the JAS-39 Gripen were/are great fighters.
Kelly Johnson didn't work for Northrop. The F-5 was designed by a team lead by Edgar Schmued. Here's the story: ruclips.net/video/hp53hEYtjxA/видео.html
I "fly" the F-5E in DCS, and even in the sim it is fun to fly, agille, fast and easy to handle. It's a shame te F-20 was cancelled because the USA didn't want her to diminish the export sales of the Viper... Thank you for the awesome F-5 videos, loved all of them!
Great video on a lovely little fighter! In an age of the overly complex and expensive F-35, I feel there is room for something small, (relatively) cheap and agile that can be purchased in larger numbers and used alongside the the current "king" of the fighters. Although much bigger than the F-5 perhaps the SAAB Grippen and F-16 move in this direction. Thanks again for a great video!
Yes, the Gripen and the Viper are the world's best light-weight fighters today. They are not much bigger than the F-5, but the larger wings allow them to carry more.
I've always loved the F5. It's always been one of the most Fighter Jet looking Fighters! Like a dart with weapons. She just looks fast! Was my Fav until the F16 came on the scene. The F16 is the sexist looking fighter with her curves😋.
Hey, I know english isnt your first language so I'm just trying to help you out here, but you always mispronounce the letter 'G'. It's pronounced with a 'J' most of the times when you mispronounce it, like in 'GENERATOR,' OR 'GENERATION' OR ' 'GIST', They would all be pronounced with a 'J' sound in the place of the G. From hearing lots of your videos, your clearly unaware of this, so just trying to help.
Aerodynamically, the F-5E and Mirage 2000 are very different. The F-5E is light and nimble, and has very good transonic performance. The Mirage 2000 is based on the Mirage III, which was designed to be a Mach 2 interceptor. The delta wing provides structural strength and space for fuel, but creates high drag at high angles of attack. The Mirage 2000 can deliver quite a punch, but the Tiger II will fly circles around it. Taiwan has both types, and I have seen them at an airshow. The Tiger II is nimble. In comparison, the Mirage depends on brute power to stay aloft.
@@FlywithMagnar Hello. In dogfight, the MIRAGE 2000 is more similar to the F16 than MIRAGE 3. Although the F5 is agile, doesn’t have enough power to maintain the required turn rate, Gs, etc.
Austria also leased the F-5E from Switzerland, till it received the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Hellou. Excelent Video. YEAGER also flew F15 EAGLE, P51 MUSTANG and others. Fun to flight F5 but awesome he preferred it as a military aircraft.
amazing aircraft that is still in service in other air forces particularly in Thailand & South Korea

Thanks! It's interesting that you voted for the Sabre. It had the same chief designer as the F-5.

That will be an interesting spreadsheet. I will check around.
Wishlist for next series with a disassembled unit walkaround of course ;) Corsair
Well done, sir. Enjoyed it.

Good engine!
Indeed!
F86 next and then the MIG15 :)

Great detailed video. Are the interior shots from a flight simulator or a video game?
The shots are from DCS. I consider it to be both a simulator and a game.

Ferry range is 10 times combat radius: with aerial refueling??
Without. A combat mission is not flown with fuel economy in mind.
@@FlywithMagnar then how is the combat radius calculated, its uncertain, it can be half the ferry range
