October 14th 1997, the 50th anniversary of breaking the sound barrier, my kids and I were at the Airshow at Edwards AFB to hear Brigadier General Chuck Yeager do it again. I can't remember at what altitude he was flying, but when the PA announcer said that "Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager is over head and making Mach 2," the place went dead quiet. Then maybe 30 seconds later...a muffled boom, The place went crazy. Years later I found out that the F-15 he was flying that day was HIS...it was a retirement gift from the Air force.

He's a legend is Chuck Yeager. All the X-plane test pilots were absolutely fearless, putting their lives at risk flying these experimental aircrafts to the limits, just so US military/agencies could pursue research into high-speed aircraft.
Chuck Yeager was the first pilot to break the sound barrier at Mach 1 (660 mph) in 1947 with the X-1.
And the X-15 aircraft flown by test pilot William Knight in 1967, reached a top speed of Mach 6.72 (4,520 mph). The X-15 aircraft holds the official world record for the fastest manned aircraft in history.
The fact that the record hasn't been beaten in over 50 years, shows how incredible the test pilots and X-planes were.

It's such a treat to see these guests and interviews.
What a shame that RUclips wasn't around so that Johnny could do something like this, I don't know if he would've but it'd have been great.

“Who’s the greatest pilot I ever saw? Well, there’s a lot of them. But there was one…who’s the best pilot I ever saw? Well, you’re looking at him!” Chuck Yeager 👈

Additionally, when Chuck broke the sound barrier in the X-1, the whole thing was top secret, so his great accomplishment was not publicized at the time.😢
