  • Are you familiar with the quilting term leaders and enders? Maybe you’ve heard it before, but just weren’t sure what it meant. These terms refer to the use of a scrap piece of fabric that is placed under the foot of your machine to start (prior to chain piecing, sewing blocks or rows together, etc.) and end your sewing.
There are many benefits to the using leaders and enders, including: (1) Save thread by eliminating a long tail of thread that needs to be cut off, (2) Prevent the thread from bunching up into a bird’s nest under the fabric as you start sewing (3) Maintain a consistent stitching environment, especially at the beginning of a piece which in turn helps to avoid fabric being drawn down into the needle hole of the thread plate (4) Prevent your needle from unthreading and (5) They are an efficient use of your sewing time!
However what I think is the best benefit to leaders and enders is when you use pre-cut fabrics instead of scraps that you will throw away to create a new quilt! That is how I made the Confetti quilt :).
For each Confetti quilt block you will need:
    (1) background (white) 2 1/2" square
    (1) print or solid color 2 1/2" square
    (1) background (white) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangle
Your blocks will measure 4 1/2" when pieced. I pieced a total of 154 blocks and finished the quilt off with a border that was cut at 2 1/2". My finished quilt measures 48" x 60". Some other suggested quilt sizes are below.
    154 blocks = 48” x 60” lap quilt
    238 blocks = 60” x 72” throw quilt
    357 blocks = 72” x 88” twin quilt
    400 blocks = 84” x 84” queen quilt

Great bonus quilt. Not having a dedicated sewing space I use leaders and enders to keep one particular step of a pattern together. They are cut together, chain pieced, pressed, then sorted into the next step. This saves my sanity because one tiny distraction usually ends with many extra hours attempting to figure out where things went wrong.

This is adorable! I don't usually use leaders, but have several solid strips from a jelly roll that would be so perfect.

Love your Sewciopath T Shirt! While many use leaders and enders, I don't. I try to engineer my block construction in a way that I'm optimizing my time at the sewing machine. Leaders and enders are a disruption in my process. HOWEVER, that said, your quilt stands beautifully as a project on its own worth tackling v. being a leader/ender project.

Brenda at Conquering Mount Scrapmore sent me over! Good explanation of leader-enders. I sometimes am rotating as many as 5 projects through the machine. Who knows which one is a leader-ender now. LOL It helps me get more done and save fabric that might not have been used. I paid for every inch, so I like to use it all. Congratulations on your channel.

I’ve just started to do this today! Trying to restrict it to just leaders and enders, but I love the finished quilt so much that I’ll probably just end up making it much sooner! 😂 Deb x 🤗

I’ve always sewn together 2.5” squares as leaders and enders. Scraps from leftover fabric from my quilts and then made 8 patches. Never happy with the resulting quilts. No order.. LOL. But now I can choose a background and the results will soothe my brain.. lol. Thanks Amanda!

I loved this idea when I first heard it. Thank you. I am currently half way through a project. I actually had the idea of using left over blocks from all the quilts I had completed while using this technique. Because of so many interruptions in my life, the blocks on the back may make another quilt completely. I tried to rush the leader and ender quilt a little to just get it finished. But I stopped myself and remembered why I chose this project. I needed another challenge: Patience. It has been good for me because I will remember. EVERY QUILT TELLS A STORY.

    • @MaterialGirlQuilts
      @MaterialGirlQuilts  Год назад

Yes - it is difficult sometimes to leave the leaders/enders alone and not just sew them all together and get it finished! But in the end you will be happy you did :)

Thanks for sharing your beautiful confetti quilt idea with us! Another good thing about this quilt is it doesn’t matter which way you press your blocks because there are not any seams to match. What is the 6 pointed star block hanging on your wall? I would love to make it out of Halloween fabrics 🎃

What an awesome idea. Not sure that I’d remember to use up my stash of 2.5 “ squares for my enders but good idea. What about thread colour though. You can probably do this IF the fabric is similar and you’re using an okay thread for both projects?? Is that a valid concern? Thank you.

I typically always piece my quilts using a light gray, white or cream thread so it's not an issue when my fabric colors change between projects.
