      @@TORY-BLUE She wasn't the one who organised this energy allowance. It was done by Sunak when he was chancellor - all she is doing is following througfh on a promise made by BJ/Sunak. She has no choice - it's definitely not something she can backtrack on. Although Sunak was also prepared to levy a windfall tax on energy companies too - which she ignored. Now look at the mess we're in.

    As Andrew marr said, as far as the mini budget is concerned Kwarteng and Truss were joined at the hip. He merely enacted the policy that both she and him agreed upon. That being the case I really don't understand how when it all goes wrong she gets to sack him and then immediately say that she is sorry to see him go. This was her policy as much as his and if he needs to be fired for it then so does she.

    She'll end up blaming everyone other than taking the blame herself, not forgetting she was responsible for the appointment of cabinet members and there is NO question she'll end up throwing them all under the bus sooner or later.
    The ex chancellor carried out her instructions regarding the mini budget, which at the time she was only to willing to take the kudos and look what happened when it all fell apart, "a chancellor sent to the gallows" for her f**k-ups. I'm a 13 year old student who wouldn't trust her regardless of how many times she states "I WANT TO BE HONEST" the truth is she doesn't know what honesty is, her recent actions prove this.

    The whole situation can be summed up like this; if my seven year old daughter understands that she needs to show how she arrived at the answers she gives to her teachers in maths at school, but Liz Truss didn’t think the markets would expect the same of her budget in government, then she needs to go, because she hasn’t even got the brains of a child.

      But most of us could see that at those hustings. It was the wealthy (politicians and donors) who got her in because of her promise of tax cuts. Those tax cuts would never benefit low earners, it was purposely to make the wealthy, wealthier.
      This should have been down to the public to vote on, she would never have got in in the first place if it had.

They had no Russian blood money to turn to, so they tried to roll the dice with these tax cuts to the top earners and corporations to secure *their* future, not the country’s.       With a nice pension
      - Former Prime Ministers are entitled to a pension based on half of their annual salary at the time of leaving office
      - They can also obtain a Public Duties Cost Allowance, which allows them to 'meet the continuing additional costs because of their special position in public life'. This is not obtainable if they are the Leader of the Opposition. The limit is currently set at a maximum of £115,000.

They are not bound to follow the decisions made by the Chancellor at Westminster. The Scottish Government recently and quite publicly refused to follow Kwarteng's disastrous 'mini-budget'.

    I knew he was going to be sacked...once i heard "I will be chancellor, 100%" --- I knew his time was done. Liz Truss won't last long too, it's only a matter of when now because as someone once said : “As we've seen at Westminster, the herd instinct is powerful. When the herd moves, it moves,”

      At least now Labour should be happy that everything they were wanting is now happening , the raising of corporation tax to 25p , keeping the 45p tax rate, scrapping of the 1.5% national insurance rise, and with the prospect of capping excess oil and gas profits ( and possible windfall tax coming along ) Labour should now have no criticism and be a little happier.

    Interesting is Truss has one thing in common with the recently dumped disaster of a PM in Australia. Scott Morrison would harp on growth, growth, tax cuts, tax cuts ad naseum and never answer the question just regurgitate the growth tax cut mantra. Morrison increased Australia's debt to a record level and big tax cuts for wealthy. In the recent election they were out in a landslide. The whole thing smells of Linton Crosby who is close to both the Tories and the Australian LNP.

    What I do know is, salaries haven't risen for 20 years, whilst the cost of living, food, petrol, congestion charging, houses, holidays etc has sky-rocketed. At some point it comes to a stage where ordinary people can't function. Noone else in any party seems to get this, or be willing to take any action to address it. What is your alternative solution?

    As an American, I have found the Parliamentary system interesting and thought it had some advantages. However, if Liz Truss goes, there will be a fifth Prime Minister in seven years. A government cannot effectively govern a country with such turnover.

      well, how much better it is in a country that is constantly paralysed by extreme bipartisanship and midterms effectively turning every president's administration into a minority government? parliamentary system has it's cons but on the whole, usually allows to actually deliver on policy goals as the government actually comes from and is in control of the legislature. of course it's best form is actually proportionate representation which is not the case in UK but that has it's own set of disadvantages again

    I would certainly not agree that George Osborne is one of the Tories' talented people. With Cameron, he devised the austerity culture, the flawed race-to-the-bottom ideology which this country has never recovered from and underpins the cost of living crisis. Austerity also enabled Brexit which has proven similarly disastrous.

Another round of cuts in an economy as structurally weak as the UK is the wrong strategy. Labour lost the last austerity wars by not arguing strongly against the cuts. The opposition must not make the same mistake this time.

      They tap into a chunk of Englands electorate that has certain views about foreigners. That plus the monied classes vote generally gets them enough to win a first past the post election. Plus vast majority of uk print media is owned by small group of media owners who push the Tory line so rampant propaganda.       I think it's because like America and MOST western democracies, England has no "compulsory voting" ... therefore only the "interested" vote. Which means minority voting rules the day. They only have themselves to blame, which they (the silent majority = sheep) don't of course. If you don't vote physically then you have actually voted - you've voted for whatever the others have chosen for you.
