Liz Truss: Will the Prime Minister survive the week?

  • As one Tory MP wrote this afternoon in what seemed a very thinly veiled metaphor: putting a dumpster fire out may be messy, but it's better to put it out quickly.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The trouble is there are a few fires burning now. The one grabbing the attention today is the Chancellor's quest to balance the books after the mini-budget's maxi-implosion.
Benefits uprating, the pensions triple lock, defence spending and even NHS funding have all been put on the block. Whatever finally gets announced on halloween could be very gruesome indeed.

What she did can't be fixed by a 'sorry it was a mistake'. Ordinary people will now face higher mortgage costs on top of higher inflation because of her mistake. A mistake she was warned about by treasury officials. If a manager of a building ignores the advice of the fire inspector and the building burns down it's to be expected that as well as being sacked they would face charges of criminal negligence and if found guilty of knowingly ignoring advice would probably end up in prison. She was criminally negligent and if she had one iota of decency she'd resign. People are going to lose their homes because of her and her chancellors 'mistake'.

The British electorate have the type of government it deserves.
The British people have been too lazy to change a parliamentary system in which authoritarianism and corruption are legislated and enshrined.
It is ridiculous for any country claiming to be a democracy to restrict basic voting rights. Yet restricting voting rights is enshrined in British law and Conservative Party policy. The British law and Conservative Party policy to restrict voting rights is reminiscent of the US south past and present.
Both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss were each chosen as Conservative Party leaders by around 15,000 Conservative Party members. This is in direct contrast with millions and millions of eligible voters had general elections been held.
Johnson and Truss had party mandates, not general election mandates, and became Prime Ministers through an authoritarian, bribery-laden, corrupt process.
The British people have gotten the governments and Prime Ministers they deserve. As long as the British people are willing to put up with an enshrined, legal, and corrupt political system, they will not have democracy and they will have Prime Ministers like Johnson and Truss.

After twelve years of austerity which have butchered our public services, there should be no talk of cuts. Close the tax loopholes, stop tax avoidance schemes and make foreign billionaires pay their way. This government's mini-budget forced the BoE to step in with £65 billion, which is almost the same amount the un-costed budget created as a black hole, and every time it's the rest of us who must pick up the tab, having our services destroyed. No more, we need public investment to boost the economy; we cannot have growth austerity.
