Mexicans have a right to their land and their nation. They can run it how they see fit. If killing you and/or scaring you by pointing guns at your face is how they do it, and you have a problem with that... Then don't go there. That simple. even if you have a family member I wouldn't recommend it, and I'm Mexican. This guy is the nephew of a friend, (I say guy but he was like 15). He's from Chicago and went to visit family near the city my mom is from. He stayed with some family members, but I guess some family were too excited and it became known that the dude was gonna arrive there from the US. Well, he got there and was fine for a few days, but then he got kidnapped when he was with his family shopping and got shoved into a car to who knows where. Then the kidnappers called his family from Mexico and demanded his family in the US give them a few thousand dollars in a few days or they would kill him. Thankfully the dude's family was able to get the money rly fast and they were able to get him back. The same thing happened but to this other lady in my mom's town except her kid was 4.
Tbh it could've been someone that knew the dude's family and planned to kidnap him.

Cartels don't want to kill or kidnap tourists but if they find out where the main cartel attraction is, they would have to kill the tourist. Lots of tourist attractions and food; it's all I care to venture into Mexico for. My best advise for tourists in these situations is to keep your cool, state that you’re a foreign tourist (make sure you include your country of origin), be honest and answer every question they ask you… most of the time these criminals just want to know that you’re not a threat to their territory and will either let you go through or make you go back. Try to stay off of back unpaved roads unless you know where you going. Unfortunately this is also true for most city dweller Mexicans as well.
