Butterfly Pull-ups Progression and Technique! In this video I go over three simple progressions that I have used to help athletes develop their butterfly pull-up. Although it looks weird, the butterfly will allow you to complete more reps in a shorter amount of time compared to the traditional kipping or strict pull-up. Watch to find out how the butterfly technique differs from that of kipping; and how you can progress toward this tricky movement in 3 simple steps.
Step 1: Arms only
Step 2: Legs only
Step 3: Strict fall-through
MAKE SURE you have the requisite strength (several strict pull-ups) before trying to develop this movement! For free coaching directly from me- wodprep.com/pull-ups/

Idiots
Great tips thank you. I have ANGIE tomorrow as my Wod. Any tips to go faster on pull ups and how to mantain the grip?
I love your channel!!!
All these comments dissing crossfit. It's all laughing to you actually try Crossfit. I've done calisthenics for years, but now transition to Crossfit full time. Want to compete next year, in the beginners phase at the moment but improving each day. Crossfit is my passion, and it's the hardest way to train, its conditioning your body to the fullest. Also movements like this help with reps which is part of the sport, and it's not bad for your rotator cuffs if you are doing it right, like in the video. In my opinion a muscle up with bad form could be worse. Love the video, and is going to help me progress
Just watched this video and learned how to do a butterfly pull up 👍🏼 thank you 💯
This is literally the best video for butterfly pull ups! Watched a few but failed at trying to do it until this video. Thanks!
That's cuz they all deleted cuz its bs 😅✌️
im having hard times with butterflys, so this is so usefull for me....thanx man, and greetings from chile...
jajaja....so, who the f*** R U, anyways? who was talking to you, in first place? over and out...
I can do more strict than you and put your shirt back on fool! Oh, and we're talking about pull ups not push ups.
Genius!
+Xabier G Thank you!
Dude, you have enlightened my path.
why hate? this is a part of body coordination training.
even in calisthenics, people train kip up instead of muscle up to save energy for the next move, like 360 or other tricks.
oh btw, have anyone tried one arm butterfly pull up?
Tommy could you explain in more detail how this is part of body coordination training. Is this a progression to another move? What is it exactly you are suppose to be getting out of it? I have never done crossfit so I am generally curious for the reasoning. I have however worked out for decades and served in the USMC so I do know how to do pull ups and pull up progressions if you can't do pull ups etc. From someone like me who is a crossfit outsider but has other experiences 1. this butterfly pull up looks retarded. 2. This will have no benefit for someone trying to get their first dead hang pull up. Which maybe isn't why you guys do them. I am just looking for someone to educate me on their purpose.
@@robr7200 try to think that the pull up is a completly different exercise from the butterfly pull up
The first one is for strenght/muscle gains, with an easy technic, if someone on the street asks you to do a pull up, you do this one
The butterfly pull up requires a more complex technic, and is only usefull for crossfit, and it is a good idea to only train this exercise after feeling confortable with the strict pull up.
The use of these two movements depend only on your goals
Tommy Lau calistanic kipping muscle up not kipping like this
Actually managed2put together4 after using these techniques,onwards&upwards.
For non-CrossFitters when you read "pull-up" in a CrossFit workout, you should change the words in your head to "from a full extension hang to chin over the bar".
But why are non CrossFitters looking at CrossFit workouts???
Thank you, i'll try this. Im only able to do the kipping pull up. So this one is next step
Please do not, you'll injure yourself and this movement has literally nothing useful to offer to you. Unless you plan on winning some crossfit games someday, learning this movement pattern will be useful there.
@@are3287 i thougt it would be easier to make more of them in a row... i want to do the murph this summer... i thougt butterfly was more efficient thank kipping...
@@sstephss2722
Crossfit efficient means inefficient in getting training benefit from the exercise. You dont get stronger with kipping or butterflies.
You gotta ask yourself if you're training to be stronger and healthier or if you're training to attempt some bs crossfit challenge you get no benefit from.
Tomorrow i try
I tried to download the guide several times but I never receive any confirmation email to finish the download.
nice
Still one of the best progression videos on RUclips!
Awesome tips!
+Alessandro Pires Thank you so much!
Great tips! I keep getting messed up when just doing the leg part. I want to go back to regular kipping of some reason.
+Cat Teel Thanks! Yes is basically the OPPOSITE of a normal kip. I remember how hard it was to break the normal kipping habit! These drills should definitely help!
I KNOW IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LAUGHED!!!!!
That explains why I couldn't maintain the momentum while applying the kipping used in kipping pull up while attempting butterfly
All your tips are really helpful, keep it up!!
Butterfly in the skyyyyyyI can go twice as highhhhhhBecause real pull ups need chins above bars
What advantages does this pull up have over a traditional pull up?
How will I ever be able to do a strict pull up. I can’t get past banded pull-ups 😓
Should I do this if I have trap problems?
Top, ths
This is great! Thank you!
+Marek Cervenka Thank you so much!
Thanks for that bro 💪
This actually made me feel better about myself, what a way to ruin your elbows. Facepalm
+Francisco Lozano Glad I could boost your ego, buddy! Haha
+WODprep hahaha wasen't expecting such a burn as a comeback, respect dude
Nice tips thanks now let's try this for 16.1 😨
Why would you do this? Like, are there even any benefits you don't get from strict pullups?
Zirofol you do strict pull-ups to get stronger so in a competition when you need to go fast you can do this
Zirofol no they are literally useless. Its a way for crosshitters to say they can do 10 pullups.
Two Jokers Cards thats bullshit. You shouldn't ve allowes to kip on competition
None. I just wanted to show off my fancy new mohawk.
Mtn Dude actually there are you can do more butterfly pull ups than strict thus producing more power which makes your metcon more intense
