Gregg was later interviewed about this night. He said it was a turning point in his life. He rewatched it a few days later and was horrified to see how he spoke and looked. Said he was drinking apprx a qt of vodka daily. At this moment he decided to get off alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes. He hired a male nurse to live in his home with him while he detoxed. He had been to 16 rehabs, failing at all of them. Seeing himself barely able to stand up was his magic moment. He never again drank, took any drug and stopped smoking - all cold turkey. He said it was the hardest thing he had ever done. Such a brilliant singer/songwriter. He left a huge void in the lives of all who loved his music.

There wasn't even anyone at the door to collect our tickets! We just walked in, and down the aisle to the front row and sat in these wooden seats center stage, which were maybe 5 feet from a small stage that actually had a curtain, and were blown away for 2 hours by a Gregg, Duane, Berry, Dickie and Butch giving it their all as if they were playing for thousands! They played for 2 hours, took a break , sat down on the floor at the back of the stage and enjoyed some "refreshments" along with the rest of us, then got up and played for another hour! So up close and personal....the following year, they WERE playing to thousands! Much respect....hard earned and well deserved!!
A very dignified induction for perhaps the greatest of American bands. A beautiful introduction from Willie and some moving words and memories from the band and family. God I wish Duane would've been alive for this. The music world lost major part of Rock music the day that Duane died. His loss is immeasurable. I still shed tears for Duane to this day, over 51 years after he was tragically taken from us.
They were such a good band, that I remember even when they appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, they were one of the few bands that Doc Severinsen and his orchestra would jam with! Doc loved playing his trumpet with those guys--that was an honor for him!
I read Gregg's book and I don't blame him for being drunk one bit. It was a very emotional night for him and he never stopped missing his brother. I'd do the same fucking thing.
I was just in Macon. Visited the Big House and Duane and Berry's graves at Rose Hill Cemetery. Spoke with someone down there who knew Gregg somewhat and seemed in the loop. This was just after the bogus hospice reports. Apparently Gregg is not doing well. He's home but the whispers are not encouraging. The one person I spoke with had tears in their eye. Let's pray for Gregg. May he come to know his Savior while there is still time.
@Kitten Lyric Yeah what's this guy just ASSUMING that Gregg has no relationship with the Lord. Most recovering addicts/alcoholics have a stronger relationship with God than the average Joe. Or even the common hypocritical, condescending, gossiping, judgemental "church goer" Guess how I know that.
I’m still in AWE of this band - here, after listening to them starting in 1988 , when I was in high school. They’ve never not been one of my faves - and I always come back and listen again, more intently, and I hear new things I missed before. They have such a rich legacy and will forever be a part of the American music experience . So proud of who they were/are and what they did.
Greg said he didn't rember this at all, and it was the reason he got clean. And i thought he was clean years before , i met him at The Joint in Vegas and rember him that he was very nice to the fans after the show..
Supposedly when Gregg walked up on stage to shake Willie Nelson’s hand, Willie said “Jesus Gregg, are you alright?” Thank God he got away from that. They were the best.
They never should have kicked Dicky out of the band. The live shows never had the visual electricity once he was forced out. Big mistake Butch. 1989-2000 were powerful years for the band and they proved to be one of the greatest American bands of all time.
@@Cpayne30 say what!? I guess a month of shows every year at the Beacon in March in NYC, and two or three sold out shows in the Boston area and all across the country EVERY SINGLE SUMMER proves you wrong.

Watch the video from 1972 @ Hofstra University NY. Only Betts on guitar and Berry on bass. Dickey singing Rambin Man and playing his leads wishing he had Duane on stage with him. Berry watching Dickey with the same lonely look in his eyes. 9 days later Berry died in Macon Georgia only 3 blocks from where Duane died after hitting a truck. How does a band come back from that loss. Gregg continued on for his brother and band mates and he knew the music would eventually save him too.
On the Big interview with Dan Rather, Gregg Allman admitted feeling horrible for being drunk at the induction. RIP Gregg, Thanks for all the great music 🎶
It was a a damn sad day for him.....he can't go a day without thinking about his brother. My heart goes out to Gregg and all of his accomplishments. He forged ON when many would have quit.
Barry Oakley Jr. was actually raised by Chuck Negron, one of the singers in Three Dog Night (the one with the great mustache). Negron married Julia Densmore who was married to the Doors Drummer who she divorced then briefly dated Oakley before he died. Whew.
Recently I listened to Gregg's fantastic audio book and he talked about this period in his life and this induction ceremony and brother, he wasn't kidding about being a mess and on death's door step and ashamed of himself.
Agreed...with most commenters... The ABB was part of the wonderful culture of the 60's and 70's, now not only a sad dark time in music but also it seems in our politics and culture.....May Gregg spirit begin anew on another new journey and will miss his unique voice in this one.
I am so happy to see this. Warren Haynes & Allen Woody! Warren sang very well. He was as good as Gregg. That is saying a lot, because Gregg Allman had one of the best voices in music generally.
Greg said he could barely stand up. He seen this tape a couple days later & said he cried like a baby. Alcohol is such a horrible drug. It does horrible things to people.. He said coming off of it was just diabolical. I'm sure missing Greg Allman. One of my favorites. I hope he is at peace & with his baybra...( That's what Duane would say. Its a southern thing )
Lamar Williams, who played bass after the death of Berry Oakley, wasn't mentioned either, nor were the Toler brothers. But at that moment on stage I guess it is difficult to try to remember and mention everyone.
Chuck Leavell along with Jaimoe and Lamar Williams were in the band Sea Level back the 70's after the Allman Brother first split up....Chuck later on played with the Rolling Stones after Ian Stewart died.
OMG, GALADRIEL ALLMAN LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HER DAD DUANE. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE RESEMBLANCE AND HOW MUCH SHE IS HER FATHER!!!! OH HONEY, I LOVED YOUR FATHER BOTH AS A MUSICIAN AND PERSON. HE IS DEFINATLEY ONE OF MY HERO'S OF LIFE, MUSICAL HERO'S AND WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A SHINING STAR OF A SOUTHERN ROCKER. DUANE IS IMMORTAL IN MANY WAYS ESPECIALLY FOR HIS SLIDE PLAYING. HIS GREATEST GIFT WAS PUTTING THE ABB TOGETHER & ONLY 2 YEARS LATER, THEY WERE THE BEST GROUP IN THE COUNTRY & THE WORLD.
Berry Oakley was peerless in the world of bass players, as peerless as the others were in their field of fame. I have found a lot of praise for for all the others ABB members, but not a lot about Berry's innovative style and the benchmark he set for future bass players.
Amen to that. Listen to the live version of "Blue Sky" at SUNY recorded the month before Duane died. Berry is monster on that track, soloing underneath the guitars but still keeping the rhythm going.
Just finished reading, "My Cross to Bear" by Gregg and he says he hit his bottom at that time, the alcohol was killing him. He was pretty wasted when he got to the awards ceremony.

The fact that you can't see how drunk he was is scary and sad. True alcoholics have drank for so long and so much that they can seem almost as normal as a sober person. My mom was like that until she got old and couldn't handle it.
These are sad times in music in my opinion. There was nothing like Rock & Roll and R&B of the 60's & 70's yet the 80's were fun too. His son Micheal Sean lives in the same town as I do, plays locally and is very talented in his music with that AWESOME DEEP RASPY VOICE I JUST LOVE!! And brings back many great memories of Gregg and his musical talent. My favorite concert ever was seeing him at Ruth Eckerd Hall! RIP Gregg!! Thanks for all the great music and memories!!
THIS BAND IS SO LUVED BY COUNTRY, BLUES AND ROCK ARTISTS EVERYWHERE!! 🤘
Allman brothers are my #1 favorite group!
Freshman in college in '77, we listened to them endlessly!
🇺🇲♥️
Great band..
I've been playing alot of their music lately.
Out in the yard in my truck always playing.
You`re right.Although he was drunk, he did`nt sound to bad, he got all the words out, and from what I`ve read he wanted to say alot more. But what he did say was short and sweet and touching. To me, his short speech seemed to have worked well. Thanks.
Duane this is for you man, we'll never forget you
"I've never stood before such an amazing audience in all my life" ...
Followed by the WEAKEST applause in history. 0:11
These guys were hardcore rockers and I loved them!!!! I only wish I could go back to the late 60's thru the 70/s and hear some real rock n roll...you don't hear it these days -- the bands that followed based their music on the bands of this era..you can hear it...and where are the real rock bands today...there aren't any like this!!!!!!!
bands sure can't play 11 minutes and upward either...they give us their 3 little minutes of shit.....The Allman Brothers were Legend
RIP Gregg Allman. Deepest Condolences to the family & friends. He was a great talent. The 70's wouldn't had been the same without him and the band. It was a damn shame that Duane died so young and then Berry Oakley was also killed in a motorcycle accident very close to the location of Duane's wreck the following year in 1972. RIP Gregg. Cause of deathComplications from liver cancer.
ALLMAN BROTHER BAND GENIUSZ GENIUSZ GENIUSZ nad GENIUSZAMI KOSMOS KOCHANI na zawsze dziękuję BOGU za wszystko dziękuję BARDZO
Blue Sky is their best song, one of the greatest of alltime in fact.
What a beautiful family and band!!!
Wow, very moving...thanks for posting.
Good job Gregg you did big bro proud. And galadriel looks just like her daddy. God bless you all.
Bless him. What a hard life a celebrity must lead.
Thanks for posting this hard to find piece of rock n roll history.
When Dickey honors Bill Graham, he gets some nice support from Neil Young!
God bless Duane's daughter. Long live the ABB.
I read Gregg's book and I don't blame him for being drunk one bit. It was a very emotional night for him and he never stopped missing his brother. I'd do the same fucking thing.
Well Deserved & Long Overdue!
@Kitten Lyric
Yeah what's this guy just ASSUMING that Gregg has no relationship with the Lord. Most recovering addicts/alcoholics have a stronger relationship with God than the average Joe. Or even the common hypocritical, condescending, gossiping, judgemental "church goer" Guess how I know that.
My Condolences to The Allman Family members and friends of Gregg Allman...😢😢🕇🕇🕇🌷🌷🌷🌷
Gregg Allman greatest Southern Blues Rocker ever graced the state or picked up the guitar!!! STELLAR!
Uuhhhhhmm.....guitar?
Wow! Powerful stuff! Thank you Allman Brothers Band!
One of the greatest bands of all time!
I love it that you posted this so I could see it. I Love The Allman Brothers Band
RIP Greg
Greg said he didn't rember this at all, and it was the reason he got clean.
And i thought he was clean years before , i met him at The Joint in Vegas
and rember him that he was very nice to the fans after the show..
Can't get enough of the Almond Brothers although I've always been a Mounds man myself. Sometimes you're feeling your nuts, but best you don't.
Allman
@@debbiemeek3741 The meek shall inherit the earth, but only after the comedians have made fun of its inhabitants. I suggest you get a sense of humor.
LUV YA GREGG ..... NO MATTER WHAT..... THIS IS THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND........ALLMAN IS THE NAME...
Supposedly when Gregg walked up on stage to shake Willie Nelson’s hand, Willie said “Jesus Gregg, are you alright?”
Thank God he got away from that. They were the best.
Warren is carrying on with class
I don't see where Gregg was so drunk he claps for the guy thanking his mother at 3:20 I thought he was pretty respectful imo
Agree. He didn't appear to be stumbling or slurring.
They never should have kicked Dicky out of the band. The live shows never had the visual electricity once he was forced out. Big mistake Butch. 1989-2000 were powerful years for the band and they proved to be one of the greatest American bands of all time.
2000 was not very powerful. The late 90s era really wasn't either, but the music was still good.
@@Cpayne30 say what!? I guess a month of shows every year at the Beacon in March in NYC, and two or three sold out shows in the Boston area and all across the country EVERY SINGLE SUMMER proves you wrong.
@@PatriotSteve 2000 with Dickey was just not powerful; it was extremely poor by the band's standards. Dickey was playing great up through 95-96, but after that he was very inconsistent.
Dickey was a cool dude, with a dry sense of humor,he held it together for this speach
I heard gregg attribute seeing the replay made him get clean.
He did yes. It inspired him to turn it all around. It takes balls to do something like that. 100% respect for the man and may he rest in peace
Thank you.
On the Big interview with Dan Rather, Gregg Allman admitted feeling horrible for being drunk at the induction. RIP Gregg, Thanks for all the great music 🎶
R.I.P. Gregg Allman :(
Greg did OK. Being drunk ain't pretty but he didn't say anything stupid. No Mike Love action here.
Yep, I believe that was another sad day for him. I know he wanted his brother there.
It was a a damn sad day for him.....he can't go a day without thinking about his brother. My heart goes out to Gregg and all of his accomplishments. He forged ON when many would have quit.
True, but please never mention Mike Love and Gregg in the same sentence ever again. That guy is a complete turd!
Mike Love be 100 times as embarrassing, and stone cold sober when he said it!
love that-he did not blow it-unlike some people do on this stream@@jacksampsonforever
Barry Oakley Jr. was actually raised by Chuck Negron, one of the singers in Three Dog Night (the one with the great mustache). Negron married Julia Densmore who was married to the Doors Drummer who she divorced then briefly dated Oakley before he died. Whew.
Whew is right, kind of a cool story
Recently I listened to Gregg's fantastic audio book and he talked about this period in his life and this induction ceremony and brother, he wasn't kidding about being a mess and on death's door step and ashamed of himself.
Very classy. Great group.
Poor Gregg. But it was a Crossroads in his life. He got better as a result of this.
God bless one of the greatest bands ever
Agreed...with most commenters... The ABB was part of the wonderful culture of the 60's and 70's, now not only a sad dark time in music but also it seems in our politics and culture.....May Gregg spirit begin anew on another new journey and will miss his unique voice in this one.
R.I.P. Gregg
Betts was always phenomenal
I am so happy to see this. Warren Haynes & Allen Woody!
Warren sang very well. He was as good as Gregg. That is saying a lot, because Gregg Allman had one of the best voices in music generally.
Greg said he could barely stand up. He seen this tape a couple days later & said he cried like a baby. Alcohol is such a horrible drug. It does horrible things to people.. He said coming off of it was just diabolical. I'm sure missing Greg Allman. One of my favorites. I hope he is at peace & with his baybra...( That's what Duane would say. Its a southern thing )
Gregg Allman said seeing himself on this made him get sober
It's a shame nobody mentioned Chuck Leavell who was a big part of the band for years.
Indeed. Why the heck wasn't he there?
Lamar Williams, who played bass after the death of Berry Oakley, wasn't mentioned either, nor were the Toler brothers. But at that moment on stage I guess it is difficult to try to remember and mention everyone.
Chuck Leavell along with Jaimoe and Lamar Williams were in the band Sea Level back the 70's after the Allman Brother first split up....Chuck later on played with the Rolling Stones after Ian Stewart died.
Dickey Betts is a hoot in this.
Richard Cosmillo why are you yelling?
Gregg's 1973 solo album "laid back" is very good but unheralded.
It is a superb album and did receive quite a bit of critical acclaim and commercial success.
Berry is monster on that track, soloing underneath the guitars but still keeping the rhythm going.
not afraid to say, Duane's daughter speech broke me up
Just finished reading, "My Cross to Bear" by Gregg and he says he hit his bottom at that time, the alcohol was killing him. He was pretty wasted when he got to the awards ceremony.
Wish dickey would of been with the band on their 50th anniversary
LET THE WORLD 🌎 MUSIC🎶 PLAY Allman Brothers Band Forever🎤🎸🎤🎹🎤🎸🎤🎸🎤🥁🎤🥁🎤 Brother Frankie Romero Thank you so much God bless🖥💻📱🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️👍👍👍👍👍👍👊👊👊👊👊👊🙂🕶🕶🕶🕶😎
Rest in Peace Gregg
Gregg talked about his speech to Dan Rather ,,, Right after that night he quite all the vices …
If you want the real truth, ask a drunk. Gregg was right and truthful, Duane was always there and damn well FIRST to face the fire. You would go through him if there was any trouble. RIP.
Greg doesn't seem that drunk as he stated he was. He said this was the moment that made him FINALLY quit drinking.
Just different times with what ever reflects the cultures that surround them. Even the 90's had their styles. Sad to no longer see long gigs played or even kids just hang out without a damn Iphone these days.

+Josh that's BULL SHIT. Their is also no such thing as "true" alcoholic. Either one is an alcoholic or they're not. And it's NOT a "fact" that if someone can't "see" how drunk Greg was that it's scary or sad. He wasn't slurring his words either. He sadly died today 05/27/17 of Complications from liver cancer. Probably from drinking. These are sad times in music in my opinion. There was nothing like Rock & Roll and R&B of the 60's & 70's yet the 80's were fun too.
